This takes some talent. To talk this fast and yet be eloquent and straightforward in the explanations is really an amazing trait. Thanks for this video!
Congratulations for the notes about the mistakes, it must have taken a lot of work that alone! The flow of the game was great, you're really good at this!
Seems to me that the contradictions are a good portrayal of how the game's going to actually go. Definitely not contradicting my initial impression that it'd be a better computer game than board game, the busiwork is out of hand.
I am very brand new to Gloomhaven (just got it yesterday) and this helped a lot to understand the game. The size of the box is very overwhelming, and showing what these characters can do has shown me what combos are possible. Amazing job!
Wow, this is amazing! Nothing else came even remotely close to getting me as comfortable with the rules of the game as this vid. The corrections you added in post were also super helpful, not only because they clarified the rules, but also because I now know to pay extra attention to the situations that required those rules when I'm playing. Basically, I know what kinds of rules can be easily forgotten (eg Using equipment at appropriate times), so I can take extra care around them. Seriously, thank you so much for this vid!
Really great playthrough. I usually can't watch Gloomhaven vids because of all the stuff people usually get wrong and although you did make some mistakes, they were all annotated. I even learned a couple of new things.
Super late so I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this... At 1:40:00 you are actually right while recording. The Elite Ooze does the same amount of damage as the regular ones. It has one additional range.
Omg, thank you so much for all the effort you put into making this playthrough. I have watched several others, and as much as I appreciate anyone who takes the time to record one, seeing an over abundance of mistakes made can make them unenjoyable as a viewer (at least for me). Again, I appreciate everyone recording content for us to watch, but this is the best I've seen so far. *thumbs up*
Star Eater It is as good as the reviews say. The game is incredibly well designed, has a wealth of content, and a cool twist on typical fantasy tropes. Each character you can play as is so different because of their abilities, figuring them out is great fun. Saying this is bad because one other game he likes better makes no sense. He likes Pandemic Legacy better, so what, every other game is bad? Makes no sense.
1:02:17 "invisible' wears off at the END of the NEXT turn, so when activating at the beginning of your turn, it will be on for 2 turns. But your video is extremely well made, and seeing the amount of mistakes we made last night during our first game, this is peanuts... And super nice that you added the comments at the mistakes. I learned so much from your video, for sure a big thumps up! Thanks!
I didn't catch it at Apsalar, but Icarium made my ears perk up, then Tattersail confirmed it. It helps that literally last night I was thinking about the books and all that I had forgotten, so I was on the Malazan wiki to refresh my memory. Anyway, looking forward to watching the full playthrough so I know if I should keep my pledge or not.
I've been contemplating rereading the series as well, I finished it back when book 10 came out. It's my favorite piece of fiction, but it took me 2 years to read my way through it the first time and back then I didn't have a massive time hog hobby like making videos to distract me. Maybe one day, it added a surprising amount of joy to the video making process getting to play with these names. In my campaign that I'm doing with friends I have a craigheart named Karsa, once I thought of it I was amazed at how well that name fit :)
I was just about to comment basically what Eric said (right down to the fact that Apsalar sounded familiar, but I didn't think hard enough to run down the memory until I heard Tattersail). Except, I don't think I'll be doing a full re-read any time soon, since I did one last (academic) year. I got to book 8 then gave up while doing my PhD, so once I finished I re-read books 1-8 and then finished strong. Amazing what not doing a PhD can do for one's hobbies!
I too came to compliment the Malazan inspired names. Working my way through Dust of Dreams now. I too didn't catch it until Icarium, when I remembered that the players name the characters.
Excellent! This is the first ever 2 hour video I’ve ever watched all the way through on RUclips and it was well worth it. This is the single best video to explain the game anywhere. The auto corrections you made throughout were helpful. Great job and thank you for all the obvious detailed work that went into this.
Thanks for creating this excellent play-through. You not only were thoughtful about spoilers but also with annotating your mistakes. This was my first time watching one of your videos, but the quality was so good I’ve liked, subscribed, and become a patron.
Thank you for this! I didn't know Gloomhaven had Random Dungeon Generator so this was a really nice surprise plus we got to see a full map playthrough without spoilers. Sure you made few mistakes but annotated them nicely and spotting mistakes as a viewer is only a good thing because it shows I've understood the rules correctly.
My copy of GloomHaven just came in today. This video was honestly so helpful in just being able to visualize what the rules actually mean. And the annotations for the mess-ups. Which to be fair, I believe it adds to authenticity of showing what a game is really like. Now that I'm a lot more comfortable in the rules I know I can bring this to my gaming group and get a campaign started with them. Thank you for your awesome playthrough!
Thank you for taking the time to record this. I appreciated the fact that you went above and beyond and added annotations that corrected minor mistakes. I just ordered Gloomhaven last night after reading a lot about it and hearing about it for the past several months, so I decided to start learning the rules ahead of time to allow me to play immediately when I receive it in the mail.
1:09:40 You forgot to "infuse" the room with night magic from when your character went invisible with the smoke bomb earlier! 1:16:40 I'd bet the damage modifier on that wind demon's attack card was not a typo. My guess would be that it's a big area of effect with a low chance to hit, relying on a modifier of +1 or +2 in order for it to actually do any damage. Thanks for this video, though, the format is fantastic and made it super easy to get a taste of the game's combat. I definitely want to pick this up, but first I'll be passing this link around (along with your review) to see if any of my friends would actually play!
Great video, and thanks for the corrections! I am playing for first time tomorrow and this really helped me get started. I especially appreciated you used a random dungeon so it didn't reveal what I am about to encounter in the first scenario :)
i've been wanting to play this game for awhile on tabletop simulator, but was intimidated by the 50 page rulebook. Even my sleep deprived brain can understand this. Thank you.
Thanks! Just now getting into Gloomhaven, and this was amazingly helpful! The mistake notes helped probably as much as anything, as they showed me things to watch out for! Very much appreciated.
Hi Jon. You made this look so much fun. I can't imagine the time you spent learning this, recording it and editing it. Thank you. I think I'm going to buy this.
at 1:40:38 the correction mentions "the elite ooze has base damage of 3, not 2!", however the stat card shows damage of 2 for both regular and elite oozes. Elites have a RANGE of 3, not 2.
The correction stated "base" of 3, the +1 makes the total 4 in that example, however that is wrong as the base is 2, then +1 from modifier, then -1 from shield block, so 2 total. Jon had it right the first time, the correction is incorrect. It should also be stated, each ooze are ranged attackers, they would have been constantly moving away from melee at any opportunity (my understanding), otherwise in adjacent hexes they are at a disadvantage.
Hey Jon, One error at the 10:30ish mark. You mention the hound will go to the closest person with the lowest (fastest) initiative. That IS true, except when the monster can do a multi-targeted attack/effect. In this case, the hound is going to Muddle all adjacent enemies. Since the hound CAN position itself to be next to both the Brute and the Scoundrel, it will position itself to maximize it's effect. Therefore, it would have moved to be next to both the Brute and the Scoundrel.
@Eric Concannon According to the "Official FAQ": boardgamegeek.com/thread/1897763/official-faq-game-no-rules-questions-please [Errata] Note that the wording on Page 31 of the rule book regarding monster multiple attacks should read "If the monster can target multiple figures with a single ability..." instead of the "If the monster has multiple attacks..."
Excellent video, it will really help me in my Gloomhaven sessions! Explained many questions I had (I'm also running Brute and Spellweaver in my game) And yes, thank you so much for adding captions to explain the mistakes. So many videos don't even acknowledge mistakes made, and it always make me wonder what else they missed that I didn't catch while watching.
Just discovered your channel. Excellent job! You speak clearly, the camera angles are awesome and you explain everything very concisely and easy to understand. I don't have the board game, but I did just buy the PC version, and this really helped me understand the rules better. I'm going to subscribe to your channel and check out what else you have. You have a new fan... Keep up the great work!
You're fantastic at this my friend. Great shots, camera work, great game flow, great narration, good energy, good notes as follow ups. This is really really good. This has helped lower my anxiety and nervousness to try and tackle this game. It's really quite similar to lots of games I've played with basic mechanics and now you've helped me understand the little nuances and awesome new mechanics this game has. I'm excited to try this out finally!!!
Great vid! One thing you missed that isn't notated: @ 29:18 you move the bandit guard one space to attack the brute when he should have actually moved to attack your character instead. The guard is one space away from BOTH the brute and your character so when determining the monsters 'focus' for its attack the tie breaker causes it to ATTACK THE CHARACTER WITH THE LOWEST INITIATIVE VALUE (which in this case is you). Again great video! I don't want to nitpick just want to put the tie-breaker rule out there for people
The card "Single Out" has 4 charges, but since you put the marker on the first charge when you played the card, without using it, you basically skipped it and used only 3 of those 4 charges. Beside that, it was such a good playthrough! Really loved the clear explanations, the camera work that showed all the cards and the text overlays which correct minor mistakes or explain something complicated. I wish all board game channels would do it like that!
Regarding charge cards, the way I generally use them is I start with the token on and move it down each time I use it including the time I pull it off the card. This way I do still get all of the charges, but I agree it can seem a little confusion. I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
at 1:41:50 you do an attack with ooze 6 then at 1:42:00 you attack with it again which may explain how the miss card ended up back in the attack deck :)
no, the trap is in front of the spellweaver, not in front of the scoundrel. So Vandersteen is right, the guard #4 should have attacked the scoundrel (on the upper right site).
I enjoyed watcking the full playthrough and it was great you edited in the mistakes you did. Your mistakes helped me understand how difficult it will be to remember everything in this game. Got the game yesterday, opened the box and tried to start the first scenario alone just to get an idea, but I didn't understand much. With your video, hopefully it will be a lot easier. I just have to read the rulebook a few more times :)
Really great video! I’ve ordered this for solo play and waiting for it to arrive and honestly I’ve nearly cancelled my order a few times due to complexity worries... but then I watch this and remind myself why I ordered it in the first place- the gameplay!!! 😄
Great video. Played two games of Mage Knight over the last two days and have been looking for another game where you can level a character and combo several abilities to do great things. I play Mage Knight almost exclusively solo, but this looks great for multiplayer. I am checking out the KS for the 2nd reprint. Thanks for all of the hard work that this must have taken to film.
I'm more into war-games not really having participated in D&D for quite sometime but this caught my interest when I was at the local game store about a year ago. Way to pricey for me back then but after noticing it was available on Amazon for about half the price I decided to check out some videos. I wasn't sure how long I could watch a video over 2 hrs long but you did a great job and despite the errors, I quickly found myself getting a better understanding of how to play. The corrections certainly helped. Anyway, I watched the whole thing except for a 1/2 hr break to drop my wife off. I decided to order it and hopefully I'll get enough time to experience the whole campaign. Both my daughters are into this type of game so shouldn't be too hard to recruit them. Keep up the great work. Subscribed.
Good luck with the game and the campaign! My group took a 6 month break on it accidentally and are just getting back into playing it again and we are 32 scenarios into it. It really is an amazing experience and I hope it goes well for you and your family :)
Thanks a lot for this playthrough! My copy is coming some time this week.. im hoping to actually find it at my doorstep when i get home today! Haha this video got me even more excited for it
What an incredible video! Between playing 3 different characters and handling all of the monsters yourself, mistakes are bound to happen. The fact that you took the time to acknowledge these errors in post in order to clarify the proper way to play speaks volumes about your dedication to teaching this amazing game to others. On top of that, using multiple, smart, and clear camera shots to keep the viewer engaged throughout, as well as all the massive amount of editing that must have gone into turning all of those isolated shots into a true story arch... my god dude, by the end of this project you must have been (dare I say) exhausted. Probably the only 'game breaking' error in the whole thing was the use of Impaling Eruption, but it was clearly unintentional (honestly the way the card reads is pretty vague if you don't already know how it works) so I'm not mad about it at all. Seriously dude, this is some incredible work and you kept this positive, helpful tone throughout the whole thing. You definitely earned my subscription with this one. It almost feels selfish to say due to how much work must have gone into making this... but I would absolutely watch more randomly generated Gloomhaven dungeons Being able to see the gameplay without spoiling any of the story is the best of all worlds and made for a fantastic and very educational watch. I will absolutely encourage anyone I know who is thinking of playing Gloomhaven to watch this video. I just can't say enough how much this impressed me. SIMPLY ASTOUNDING!!
Thanks Dan, it's always great to here when a video really helps someone out :) This one was a beast for sure, I made it before I started logging all my hours so I'm not sure exactly how much time it took but I can confidently say it was over 20 hours once it was all said and done.
Another small mistake probably worth a notation, just since people are going to be using this for learning: at 48m you forgot to have the brute take his short rest at the end of the turn. You did it later at the beginning of the next turn. But officially, if you'd waited like that, you would have been forced to take a long rest, since you had no cards left in your hand. Not a big deal in a friendly co-op game :)
So far at an hour into the playthrough I've noticed 2 mistakes: first, when the elite archer is surrounded in the first room they would have actually moved back one space and attacked the first person that went that turn that wouldn't cause the archer to have disadvantage. Second, the Impaling Eruption doesn't do 4 attacks, it does one attack and you gain experience of up to 4 based on how many targets the attack goes through...
Daniel Layton i feel you are incorrect on both. the elite archer didn’t draw a ‘move’ action, so it wouldn’t move. it would have to stay put and face the disadvantage. impaling eruption does do 4 attacks as that what ‘target’ means. reread the card.
Impaling Eruption does do up to 4 attacks but they have to be "on the path" to the primary target not any enemy that is 4 hexes away. You can only go through a total of 4 hexes so would not have been able to target all the oozes and the living corpse. 2 of the hexes on the path were empty so only 2 of the enemies could be hit.
So close. I'm just going to squint and read the 'i' in Tattersail as another 'l'. :) I haven't played Gloomhaven yet but I will be soon. It was good to see how it works without spoiling the campaign. thanks for putting in the effort.
I was really confused by your comment until I took a closer look at your name :P Tattersail is a significant character in a fantsy novel series called "Malazan Book of the Fallen" which I quite enjoyed, so I named all these players off people from those books. I've actually named all my actual campaign Gloomhaven characters after Malazan characters as well, it helps that that series has hundreds of names to choose from.
I've named every Gloomhaven character in my campaign after Malazan characters too :) It's such an amazing world, and it's fun to bring that into the game. I'm meaning to do a full re-read of it soon, it's been many years and I know I'll pick up way more detail on a second full read of them.
Awesome video! Thinking of pulling the trigger on this game if I can find somewhere in stock. Also, love the Malazan references you’ve added to the names!
Just punched out my second edition copy that I got through Kickstarter. Great video to get an idea how to play. And the Malazan references! It figures that you like Steven Eriksons writings.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, and yeah when I can I try to hide easter egg names into these vids. No one seemed to notice the ones I did in the First Martians playthrough, but fortunately several noticed the malazan connections here :) Icarium is one of my favorite fictional characters ever, so it was easy trying to work him in.
Nice Video and really nice effort with all the captions. I think it isn't reallly important after 5 years but i caught a little error at 1:22:35 - the summon is an ally of yours and you could have get 2 more damage :) Edit: and at 1:32:55 the second step of the ooze wouldnt have happened because it would Not get closer to you
Unfortunately that's not going to happen, this channel is about covering a wide variety of games instead of showing a deeper into specific ones with multiple playthroughs.
At 1:41:00, wouldn't those oozes adjacent to the Brute turn the their focus to the Summon and the Scoundrel, respective to their line of sight, firing their ranged attacks passed the Brute to avoid disadvantage? I didn't see any note on this in the video.
I'd have to look back at the rules, but I do think you are correct. Unfortunately youtube has recently removed all of the annotations that I put into the video to show mistakes and this was filmed long before I started adding in Klingon subtitles so there is no prompt for people to know to turn them on if I did add them :-\
I too am in the middle of a reread. Well near the start I suppose, only halfway through Deadhouse Gates at the moment. I've named all my Gloomhaven figures after Malazan characters, my first one was "Karsa" the cragheart. The shattered chest seemed close enough to work, as well as the whole "super strong, beats people up with heavy objects" thing.
Your annotated corrections were a great addition to the video
This takes some talent. To talk this fast and yet be eloquent and straightforward in the explanations is really an amazing trait. Thanks for this video!
This is by far the best play through for gloomhaven i have seen...excellent!
The others must really suck. This guy makes so many HUGE game-breaking errors!
Graham Martin Sure, post a link to your videos, I will let you know if there better.
Agreed. While the rules errors are legion, they are well documented with the text overlay and the presentation quality is excellent.
Congratulations for the notes about the mistakes, it must have taken a lot of work that alone! The flow of the game was great, you're really good at this!
totally agree #MVP
Although he keeps forgetting to move the night magic counter each time he should have done so :P
Seems to me that the contradictions are a good portrayal of how the game's going to actually go.
Definitely not contradicting my initial impression that it'd be a better computer game than board game, the busiwork is out of hand.
It seems like a hard game to remember all the rules. I think that sometimes you forgot to move the energy token also.
@@Eunostos You have your wish! Just got the video game and came here to gain a little more understanding.

jon snow can you explain why it's not as good as the reviews say?

Yeah I agree 100% with literally everything you said.
this is the quickest and most understandable tutorial I've seen so far, well done
This playthrough was so needed. Really helped to get my head round the game and the flow of it. Many thanks dude!
Nicely done! You've officially made the best Gloomhaven 'let's play' - IMO.
1:02:17 "invisible' wears off at the END of the NEXT turn, so when activating at the beginning of your turn, it will be on for 2 turns.

one of the best gloomhaven gameplays on youtube!!
Nicely done, love the way you use the camera to get right in the action and not move it around too much. Perfect shots IMO.

Additionally, a minute or so later, you activate ooze 6 twice, I believe.
Amazing job on this playthrough. This was beyond helpful for assisting me to teach my first session of Gloomhaven.
That's great to hear, I hope you enjoyed the game :)
Love the names, been looking for the fourth Malazan book recently.

I was really considering this game and seeing it described in detail really sold me. Thanks for putting in the time about this.
Fantastic video. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.
that s the best capture of the game l have seen so far. awesome work. ty and kutgw.
Love the Malazan names! One of my favorite book series.
Yeah, that series really stuck with me.
I highly recommend sleeving the cards, for some reason the card stock will start to gather gunk on them over time. At least ours did.
really appreciate you making corrections through the video
Fantastic video. Best illustration of how this game is played, and really enjoyable to watch. You explained it all really well. Well done!
I don't want to nitpick just want to put the tie-breaker rule out there for people
Yeah that's a good catch. I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great video bro. You have a calm voice and your scenario was entertaining and helpful to watch
Very well done Jon! You sold the fun in the game very well .
A malazan fan! Great video!
Hey Jon, props for the video. 9 hrs of work much appreciated!
That combo was insane. I was cackling as soon as the cards lined up.
Fantastic playthrough to learn from as a complete newcomer. Thank you!
at 1:41:50 you do an attack with ooze 6 then at 1:42:00 you attack with it again which may explain how the miss card ended up back in the attack deck :)
At 29:17, shouldn't guard #4 have attacked the scoundrel because of initiative?
no, the trap is in front of the spellweaver, not in front of the scoundrel. So Vandersteen is right, the guard #4 should have attacked the scoundrel (on the upper right site).
Great job here, Jon! Thanks a lot of this video, now I'm not as much scared of the game with all its pieces, rules and physical weight :D
Great video. cheers for taking the time to make it buddy. subscribed.
Damn, playa! You managed to seduce not one, but TWO women with down's syndrome? How you do that?
I enjoyed watcking the full playthrough and it was great you edited in the mistakes you did. Your mistakes helped me understand how difficult it will be to remember everything in this game.
Got the game yesterday, opened the box and tried to start the first scenario alone just to get an idea, but I didn't understand much. With your video, hopefully it will be a lot easier.
I just have to read the rulebook a few more times :)
Good luck Geir, I hope you enjoy the game :)
Great Vid. I just got Gloomhaven and am starting a couple of campaigns. I appreciate the non-spoiler play! Good job on this one. Thanks.
Respect for such a great quality content!
Really great video! I’ve ordered this for solo play and waiting for it to arrive and honestly I’ve nearly cancelled my order a few times due to complexity worries... but then I watch this and remind myself why I ordered it in the first place- the gameplay!!! 😄
Very well made video. Just bought Gloomhaven and I learned a lot just from this play through! Can't wait to play it myself!
LOVE Mage Knight too!!!
Wonderful walkthrough. Hope I can snag a copy for myself for Christmas. I'd hate to miss the second printing!
Just found this play through, extremely well done and helpful to better learning the game. You should do more Gloomhaven dungeons!!
Great job. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Incredibly well made play through!
You had me sold on continuing to watch as soon as you used malazan names.
I am glad a few people picked up on those :)
Awesome video, learned a lot and appreciate the added corrections
Thanks a lot for this playthrough! My copy is coming some time this week.. im hoping to actually find it at my doorstep when i get home today! Haha this video got me even more excited for it
This is exactly what I needed! Thank you!
A lot of depth in the explanation, very nice.
Not a big deal in a friendly co-op game :)
this game is crazily daunting at first, sooooooo many stuffs to keep track of
So far at an hour into the playthrough I've noticed 2 mistakes: first, when the elite archer is surrounded in the first room they would have actually moved back one space and attacked the first person that went that turn that wouldn't cause the archer to have disadvantage.
At 1:40:37 you put a note up that the elite ooze's base damage is 3, not 2, but that doesn't seem right. It's range is 3.
When you attacked through the door at around 1:31:00, you could have moved onto one of the chests and still taken the shot.
So close. I'm just going to squint and read the 'i' in Tattersail as another 'l'. :)
I haven't played Gloomhaven yet but I will be soon.
I've actually named all my actual campaign Gloomhaven characters after Malazan characters as well, it helps that that series has hundreds of names to choose from.
great play through, very easy to follow along. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Long live Steven Erikson and his Malazan world. Respect for the naming of your characters.
I've named every Gloomhaven character in my campaign after Malazan characters too :) It's such an amazing world, and it's fun to bring that into the game. I'm meaning to do a full re-read of it soon, it's been many years and I know I'll pick up way more detail on a second full read of them.
this great. i feel like i understand how to play now
Awesome video!
I actually enjoyed this playthrough. Nice video!
Awesome playthrough, thanks!
Nice Video and really nice effort with all the captions. I think it isn't reallly important after 5 years but i caught a little error at 1:22:35 - the summon is an ally of yours and you could have get 2 more damage :)
Edit: and at 1:32:55 the second step of the ooze wouldnt have happened because it would Not get closer to you
I've really enjoyed seeing your gloomhaven videos. I encourage you to bring more awesome gloomhaven gameplay
Unfortunately that's not going to happen, this channel is about covering a wide variety of games instead of showing a deeper into specific ones with multiple playthroughs.
@@GettingGames well, you did a good job covering this game.well done
At 1:41:00, wouldn't those oozes adjacent to the Brute turn the their focus to the Summon and the Scoundrel, respective to their line of sight, firing their ranged attacks passed the Brute to avoid disadvantage? I didn't see any note on this in the video.
I'd have to look back at the rules, but I do think you are correct. Unfortunately youtube has recently removed all of the annotations that I put into the video to show mistakes and this was filmed long before I started adding in Klingon subtitles so there is no prompt for people to know to turn them on if I did add them :-\
Great Playthrough! Thanks for doing this!
Thanks for this great video of the playtrough .
Im Gonna watch iT again tomorrow , after Then i think im ready to play the game for the frist time :)
Thank you! I’m buying Gloomhaven based on your play through.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy it :)
Nice job. Very informative, waiting on the reprint.
Some buddies of mine on discord was talking about board games and this was one of them so I decided to look at it
Currently playing through the game for the first time and also rereading the malazan series. WITNESS
