you sir saved me 27 minutes of my life..
Basically the opposite of my channel's take on Gloomhaven. I suppose I could do with a bit of Brevity , this lad nailed it.
@@RageBadgerGaming What most people are looking for in this type of videos is a concise description of what it is an has to offer, not opinions (which are the cause that some videos are longer (and boring)).
@@animanoir if you don't have the attention span to watch actual reviews you probably don't have the attention span to play most board games so idk why you're bothering
@@Smithsonian45 Actually, I just want to learn the basics so I can read the manual by myself with a bit more of clue of what I should expect. So idk why you're bothering me.
for me it was 27¾ minutes
Totally bonkers trying to cover this in under 4 minutes. But here you go. I think i covered a lot of ground in the time code.
Sometimes you must really question your sanity! Great video, as always.
You sold me more on this game in 4 minutes than reading thousand of words or watching 40+ minute videos elsewhere
Damn. That's a humbling comment. Really chuffed you think that.
I started this because i got sick of 40 min videos that left a lot out. So thank you for reminding me why I do this.
This is a great channel format; I used to look for >10 min board game videos but 4 minutes is even better! Looking forward to more videos.
It's not quite 4 minutes..... (who am i kidding, this one is pretty much 4 minutes)
This was really well done. I don't see how else this many essential elements of the game could be covered in so little time. There is truly a niche for these ultra-brief videos in trying to sway really busy people into giving a game a go!
This is exactly what i needed! I am searching for a way to hook my semi casual group onto gloomhaven but i could have never explained the basics of the game so quickly. Will watch this with them when gamenight comes and i have a feeling that they should be mostly ready to play.
I love this review format. Easy to watch and understand and your brief descriptions are on point and well done even for more complex games.
Cheers Reid, appreciated.
Amazing review! 3 minutes and I feel like I have a good idea of how this plays. Well done!
Thanks for making this content. Really appreciate an overview in a short time.
This sort of board game related content is needed, great job, keep it up.
YES SIR!
Also "needed" got me right in the feels.
I love the format of those videos keep it going
I thought this was impossible and that this video was going to be a joke. Count me impressed Sir.
Ha, is that why its got so many views, people are like "this must be BS" and watch it?
That's why I watched it lol
what the heck. How have I never found this channel before? This is awesome.
The channels been around for less than a year. And cheers Gooblat (awesome name)
I really enjoy this channel. I'm super into board games but I'm mostly uniformed so this is a huge help to me and it's done in such an easily digestible way.
What an amazing channel. It’s almost like planning out your video and editing it allows you to teach more in less time.
That's exactly our goal. Take the time, so you don't have to
Just a quick heads up, when you "create" an element, you imbue the board with that element and it immediately goes to the "strong" category. This way, you can create an element and use it in the following turn. Every element wanes once space at the end of each round when unused.
Yep, an error of mine. Corrected in the Jaws of the Lion video.
Also, you don't "immediately" infuse that element, but at the end of your turn :)
The description reminded me a lot of Mage Knight. Then you recommended Mage Knight in the end. So couldn't agree more. Good job as always!
Cheers. I think there's a fair bit of cross over in the mindset you have to have to play both games. Managing cards and resources, knowing when to push and when not to. Scratches a lot of the same itches. I prefer Gloomhaven personally, because I find the setting and characters more engaging and like the campaign mode.
Just found your channel and it is exactly what I was looking for. Great format. I wouldn't mind seeing some longer vids of those games you deem worthy. Also a top # list of games based on category ( resource management, deck building, etc). Anyway, subbed and notifications on. Keep up the good work.
Planning on some more longer form content. But the core will always be short summaries. 80/20 rule. Got the keep the channel focused on its core business or I could end up like every other channel.
I agree, what sold me to the channel was the 3 minute format. So far I'm only subbed to two board games channels, SU&SD and yours. Different styles but equally entertaining.
Really and truly, thank you for this succinct guided tour of Gloomhaven. I just picked up a new copy off someone on Kijiji for 160 CAD... really pumped about that seeing as I can’t seem to find it anywhere for less than 240/250 new
Cheers Apoch86. I tried to cover as mucha s possible, but I did end up leaving a lot out. Theres so much in the box
(I'm assuming your an Aliens fan? If so, thanks Sarge)
Thanks, another great explanation in about 3 minutes!
Really enjoyed the video! I was considering picking this up on Steam and this just convinced me to pick it up! :)
Appreciate it. :D
An elevator pitch (+2min 30sec) for the gameplay of Gloomhaven. Nice.
This is a fantastic game! This is coming from someone who never played video games, never really cared about long, strategic games (like Spartacus or Game of Thrones), and never thought that they could enjoy something like this. I do!!!
What's your name again?
-Bret.
-Brit?
-Bret.
-Brit like Britney?
-B-R-E-T.
-Oh, Bret. I like your english accent.
-New Zealand.
New Zealand, I love the lord of the rings! Well here I am boring you with my extensive knowledge of New Zealand.
- there are Vikings there right?
-uhhhh.... yeah
My god, hes only gone and done it!
Thanks for the video, but I think there's a little mistake. When a character infuses the battlefield with an element, it's token should be moved into a "strong" position, not one space to the right.
Yep, we have totally been playing that wrong, which is my fault. I've added pop up cards to correct.
You've done a great job with this vid.
At least he did not think items bought at the shop were only used once then you had to rebuy them. LOL. I had a blast writing up an official Gloomhaven message to all travelers about the specific merchant that was selling damaged goods and refunded some of the coins to my crew of 6. Did not give us all the coin because we were unknowingly bending other rules in our favor like creating and using magic on one turn and controlling our summons every move. Absolutely amazing game. I cant get enough of it.
Thanks for this! I might give it a go
Nicely done, thanks.
super helpful, thank you so much
Gloomhaven in 3 minutes? Very well done.
Cheers. Got a few bits a little wrong though (how elements work)
Dicks
Good job. I was waiting for this one.
I had the same thought.
There are just so many d*cks to handle in this game!
0:56 Your d*ck size limit is static.
Man, who’d want to play that?
What's funny is i've left this comment here because it made me laugh. But I haven't approved the other 50 people who made the same joke. Props Still closed for getting in first when it was funny :)
@@markpapenfuss1111 that's what I heard as well!!!
Thank you I don’t have to listen to a 48 minute video ten times since I get distracted soooo easily
Me too :)
Playing it solo in Tabletop Simulator -- 150% worth the learning curve. I had my doubts, because I grew up on games like Runecraft and Talisman that tried to be D&D ultra-light, and they always fall way, way short.
Gloomhaven NAILS IT. It's incredible. This is 100% the best RPG board game ever made, no doubt at all in my mind. I play exclusively on TTS (it's spoiled me), but I plan to purchase a copy, wrap it tight in heavy plastic, and let my grandkids sell it or play it. It will be worth thousands one day -- solid long-term investment.
It will never be worth thousands
By the year 2100 I could see board games being holograms or something. By then your copy will be ancient relic and perhaps drive up price? Idk
@@ivanb4681 no one expected beanie babies to be worth thousands (they were literally being used as chew toys for dogs), or pokemon cards but here we are. Cant predict value decades from now.
This is a great video. 👍
Thanks for the video...
Pro tip, increase playback speed and it's much less than 3 minutes. Book, extra time saved for gaming.
Very informative!
Thanks :)
Thank you
I think you got the elements table wrong. The elements get added after the turn to STRONG. Either at the end of the round or the beginning, they go to waining.
If you are not viewing the vid on a mobile, there are pop up corrections saying that. Unfortunately, they don't show up on mobile devices.
Thank you, Mr. Clausewitz
Hey, someone who recognizes Carl! So very very very many folks do not, lol
nice summary
So could you elaborate more on that "deck"? (He did say deck, right?) Love the accent mate!!!! Awesome 3 min. Summary btw!! Great job!
I am obviously from the US! LOL 🤣🤣🤣
God this game is phenomenal
So glad I watched this. Our house refuse to learn any game where you need to input the same effort as for a college diploma. Am sure others will find it fun.
Lol.
I love how you say "card"
The element moves two right, the one left each round thereafter (I thought?)
You are correct good sir. I done goofed on that :)
The world needs a 3min review of starcraft the board game
Sadly, as that has been out of print for over a decade, its not going to happen.
Basically the opposite of me when it comes to verbosity with Gloomhaven! Very efficient.
Cheers
This is a great review. I don't want to play this game but you've done a great job explaining it. It reminds me of when Roger Ebert would totally trash a movie but his review left me thinking that it's actually a movie I would personally like.
I'm going to to keep your reviews in mind for purchases.
Great Job!

Been thinking of getting this, just wondering if anyone knows if you're able to have people drop in and out of a campaign? For example I have 2 people who can probably play this regularly and another two people who can only play it occasionally. Is it possible to play a campaign regularly with a friend then have someone else join in when they can? Or do you basically need the same people in attendance each session? Cheers for any answers!
You don't need to play every game together, as the campaign difficulty goes up and down based on player level and player numbers.
However, even with our regular group, the story veers all over the place as you chase down different side missions. So if someones popping in and out, you might need to update them on whats happened.
We have a pool of five players, as one of us is usually away with the family or travelling for work. We're about 12 scenarios in and it seems to be working out OK.
That's pretty much how we work. I use the monster attack deck for my character and we use an app for the monsters. That way all 5 of us have a deck sorted.
@craigo1981 We have a pool of 8 that play. Currently ranging from levels 2-5. People pop in and out quite easily. We usually give a quick recap over anything major that happened. The number and level of enemies scale dynamically based on the number and level of players. One thing though: we have to be very careful with lower level squishy characters (e.g. Spellweaver or Mindthief) as they have low HP anyway but due to also being relatively low level they have very low HP and if they get hit in a team with higher level characters then it could easily be an early KO. But we just factor that into our tactical decisions and it's been mostly fine.
Great game , love it
Your reviews are absolutely the best. The best thing about this game... However... It might not be for you if... Also consider...
And now I really want Gloomhaven. And Near and Far. THANKS!
Cheers Mike. I really appreciate that.
When I was planning out the channel I thought "what do I want to know about a game?", which is why I added in those sections. So many times I describe a game in person as "Its like X, but with Y and Z", so it seemed natural to do that. And I know a lot of people talk about other games like that, so its helped them as well.
Also, any review that doesn't mention any potential problems with a game is an ad. Not a review. That's why the "however" is in every vid.
is it just me that is impressed
At first I thought this video was a misnomer being nearly 4 minutes long, but then I discovered that the rundown of the game is about 3 minutes, with the introduction/conclusion using the rest of the time.
The videos are titled "*game* in about 3 minutes", not in exactly 3 minutes or 3 minutes or less, the goal is a run time of 3.00-3.59. In the same way someone says "your coffee will be ready in about 3 minutes"
Cheeky tip, you can get Gloomhaven for £9.99.
Go onto steam and look for tabletop simulator, look at the workshop at all the additional games people have added - you will find Gloomhaven.
All you need is tabletop simulator, it has literally everything you need, rule book, minis, cards, maps and stickers.. and best of all you can play online instead of getting the boys round.
no mess!
Don’t believe me, RUclips it or do ya homework I don’t care I’m just helping out 🤷♂️
The full app will be not too different in price and easier to run.
I bought it!! So here’s a question... can I play solo some of the missions then have people to join me for some others, then be back at playing solo? Or the same people starting have to play all missions? 😳 It’s just I have friends who want to play but I know they won’t be consistent and eventually quit 🤷🏻♀️
You can swap characters in and out pretty freely, so don't worry. What i'd suggest though is never play it with only 1 character. If you are playing solo, play 2
Under 3 minutes and voice speeded up 2x :D good job
Ha, im going as fast as i can. 2x would be silly :)
More like 2 hours for set up, 1 hour for prep before the mission, 2 hours per mission, 1 hour of admin work after the mission is over, and 2 hours to put everything back.
Protip. Take off your oversized woolen mittens BEFORE you start playing. Should shave a lot of that time off.
I've got the English version of the box, it's still in the wrap and I've got to run a game on Wednesday with 4 Spaniards. I'm bricking it hence why this is the first stop.
That's a challenge. I've been running a game and I've gotten stuff wrong, and that's without having to translate.
The fact the game relies heavily on iconography will be a big help. I'd consider quickly doing up a translation sheet of the icons into Spanish.
What organizers did you use for the game?
Not sure what you mean. I have an old tackle box from a hardware store i store the monsters in, but that's about it. Everything else is in labelled plastic bags.
so.... DnD with extra steps?
No DM for starters. And D&D is rarely as "tight" as gloomhaven is in terms of scenario design as the DM is there to give balance to things.
No dice, no dungeon master, and unique pre-created character classes with completely different battle rules, but other wise yeah pretty much.
Impressive. If someone asked me to explain this game in 3 mins I would spend half that time saying “Umm”. Well played.
Just retired my Spellweaver. Still undecided who to play next, need to know by Monday lol.
Spellweaver was my first class. Hence why shes used in the examples. BOOM BOOM BOOM FALLOVER EXHAUSTED....... DID WE WIN?
3 Minute Board Games 3 Minute Board Games Haha exactly. Each round “Should I use Reviving Ether..... nah, one more hand” lol. Thanks for the vid!
I just tell them it's cardboard Skyrim lol.
@@tzera_rhuon That works, lol
Commenting for algorithm. Thank you.
1:28 Using monster modifier card for a character ?
Yeah, we were playing 5 player with the optional rules and using the monster deck for a player. Forget to correct it for the vid. (we used an app to do the monster cards)
I personally didn't like near and far because there wasn't much to do and there was basically no combat so this may be the game for me
2:57 is that the logo of ubisoft?
I've had a few folks try to pull me into a regular session of Gloomhaven -- but too much to commit to when I already have Scythe and a few other big games that don't get the love I'd like to give them. Great that you point that out -- don't get this game unless you can just outright afford it and/or you can get your money's worth over the massive length of time it'd take to play through.
Completely. Its stunning value for money IF you end up playing through at least half the campaign.
A huge waste if it sits on the shelf being untouched.
Thank God for this quick run down. One of my friends suggested this game but explained it in such an asinine way I was like no way this game sucks this bad and every video is 20 + min.
Oh dear. There are some folks who have a real bug up their butt about this game. Glad to have helped
I have no friends, I've read this can be played solo, is it any good in that context?
Try the game on steam first to see if you like it.
I've had this game for months and still haven't found a chance to play it haha.
I've heard that a bunch. People are all "LETS GET IT", then it stays unplayed for ages. It's an intimidating bastard for sure.
Did you at least punch it?
3 Minute Board Games I've seen too many people with elaborate storage boxes for it that I'm also too scared to punch any of it lol. Aw well there's a digital version coming out now anyway haha.
Dude, playing the digital edition of an expensive game with the unopened game on the shelf behind you. There should be a law against it :)
I mean... I don't disagree.
You should hop on Tabletop Simulator - the "fantasy" setup is incredible. The automation scripts are great. I can't play it physical anymore. Nothing like adding and subtracting HP right from the enemies by clicking + and -. The entire experience will spoil you.
Someone told me you get a ton of cool minis with it, is that true?
About 17 i think. One for each hero class in the game. It's not a big mini game like descent or kingdom death
Sounds cool.
D&D was too confusing for me and my kids, but I liked the coop aspect. I bought Talisman, and we're enjoying that, but it would be cool if we could all team up.
This seems like it could bridge the gap.
Depending on the kids, you might have to do a fair bit of the setup and managing the monsters to make it easier on them.
@@3MBG Yeah I just discovered Stuffed Fables, so I might go with that for now. Definitely going to have to try Gloomhaven at some point though.
That whole series is really good, there's the post apocalypse one with the guinea pig as well.
I'm actually the elements move imediatly to strong and gradually move to inert? Idk just reading the instructions for the first time.
Yeah, did you watch this on a phone? Theres a pop up that corrects the error, but it doesn't show on phones.
@@3MBG Ah yeah I was watching on a phone. I learned the game quickly thanks to you. It's really fun.
@@dotails We played liked, 20 games before this review. All doing the rule wrong. Its a busy busy game :)
Had to go to 3:59 lol, awesome!
Normally, my scripts land around the 320-345 mark. Even cut down, Gloomhaven was 4:10. I had to cut one segment I thought should have stayed it to squeak it under 4mins
Will there be a frost haven review
Yes
Cool
This seems very good, but I try to avoid massive campaign games. Our group is too random for such a big commitment.
Yeah, thats a huge issue unless you are a solo gamer. You could easily fill 12-18 months of one map a week with this game.
One thing to keep in mind is that Gloomhaven is unlike other campaign games. It doesn't have a single story that you follow through a beginning, middle, and end. Instead, it's simply set in an evolving world. It's designed to allow you to add new players or drop old ones if necessary, so you don't absolutely need a single group of people to commit to playing through all of the Scenarios -- although I think that would be a great way to do it, if you can.
Absolutely. Although it can be a bit tricky to figure out where you are up to with each thread. I need to start "recapping" our campaign to keep all the threads together
wait you did do gloomhaven!
Yep. That was a tricky one, and i got a few bits wrong. But I still think it works pretty well.
@@3MBG yeah i just picked up the game. im finding the setup of the game a little much and just understanding "what comes next" in terms of doing it correctly.
Check out Pauls vid here, it's the one i recommend for people who are stuck on the game. ruclips.net/video/pSWMvXT6jCw/видео.html
Damn. I’m sure this is a pleasure to play, but even this simplified tutorial is laughably complicated. I’m new to modern board games.
This video isn't really a tutorial as such, more of a trailer. But yeah, if you are new to modern board games, this is like diving in the deep end of the pool on day 1 of swim class.
Recognized a NZer by the "deck of cards"
What’s the replayability of games like this?
Define replayability. The campaign has around 100 scenarios. If you manage to finish it you could certainly play it again, but honestly, that's 200+ hours of gameplay so im not sure you would want to.
I wish all reviews for all games will be less than 4 minutes.
I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on this game. I wonder why it's the most rated board game.
You rounded down from 3:58?!
ty for video (:
ABOUT 3 minutes. The vids are always between 3 mins and 3 minutes 59 seconds. Gloomhaven had a lot to cover.
I now do not heed any game that 3MBG doesn't cover.
I'm sure there are mighty fine games we haven't covered
What Happened to the sound quality here? Is it just me or does it sound like you stole a headset from an old drive thru and are using that in this one?
For the longest time, and most of my videos. I had a cheap awful mic. I got a new one recently.
Deck size?
Which deck?
@@3MBG The one that represents your powers and your energy. I heard the part about having the deck and the part about shuffling the cards you discard to damage back in at the cost of losing one card, but I didn't catch the size of the deck. Also, it's absolutely brilliant that you replied. I never expected it in a million years.
Ah, that one varies by character, which is why I didn't mention it. I played a character with 9 and another with 12 i believe.
The one with the smaller deck had the ability to reclaim some lost cards though
Also, i tend to reply to most civil comments, especially if a question is asked :)
Dark Souls DnD is gloom haven!
Is this available on Xbox one? The internet refuses to give me Straight answer!
Don't think so, its still in early access on PC, and the physical game of course
@@3MBG Thank you! Literally no record of this answer anywhere on the internet!
Except every time I want to play I need an 1 hour to dig out and setup all the game card, shop item, map piece, and extra 3 hour on every scenario lol.
Buy (or make) a Token Insert for Gloomhaven. It will greatly speed up the set-up and break-down time.
You misunderstand how element get powered. Read the rules again on that part.
If you rewatch the video, a correction appears on screen, top right. (unless you're on mobile, not sure if it shows up on them)
@@3MBG Great. I was on mobile.
I have no idea how you can pack this info in 3 mins. Lol
I edit out all the breathing required, lol
I think I'll stick to dead of winter for now.
Is this guy a kiwi?
me? Yes
Duuude SPOILERS! ^^
Question - does Gloomhaven have *too much* content? Is it too big?
I have a theory that the majority of Gloomhavens bought will never ever get finished
I think it might be the case. We played a lot, like 20+ sessions, and I think we are only a 3rd of the way through it.
I don't know if that's a bad thing though. And I dont know if a "core set + expansions" model would have worked as well.
And, you know, as a reviewer doing a game a week. Locking down over 20 sessions on one game is a big slice of my game time in a year. So i'm not sure when we will get back to doing it, especially as that group is now doing an RPG game instead.
@@3MBG there is an expansion coming too. The mind boggles
That's for the hardcore crowd for sure. I'll be passing on it.
Wish I could afford this game.... Someone buy it for me 🥺
The digital version was free a few months back. And there's tabletop sim
The sweetheart and her gaming group have been playing this every Wednesday for ages. From the outside the game looks to be full of fiddly game mechanics with too man vague, poorly explained rules. But hey, they are still having fun.. ..some how.
I'm not sure how this gets it's BBG rating. Cult of the new I guess?
I dunno. This vids got 100k+ views. LOTS of people are playing and loving this game. It has huge crossover appeal with D&D peeps who just want a dungeon crawl in a box as well.
Its very much a game that has an audience that might not be playing games like Agricola or Terra Mystica as well.
