This is excellent. Been edging beds since I was 12 and work for a landscaping company. I've never seen this great side step technique. I just started edging my beds this weekend and from now on, this is how I am going to do it from now on. Thank you for the great info and video.
I like how simple and straight forward this video is. My Grandpa used to explain things this way. Simple steps with practical explanation and can do attitude! Thanks!
My mom and I were recently doing yard work and she was showing me how that's one of the few good memories of her dad. Him showing her how to do an edge with only a shovel.
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB Video. Thank you SO much. I used your method all around my lawn. The job was finished in LESS than HALF the usual time. I thank you......so does my back, as it’s not aching for days after!!
Dear sir, thank you for addressing the issue of lack of balance issues!!! I have a terrible issue with balance and now have the right tool to buy and the right tool to be successful in completing my edging jobs!!!!! ❤
I just planted my first flower bed this past weekend. I've been watching this guy's videos for 2 weeks. My flower garden looks absolutely fantastic. My next task is my grass. I will follow this guy's videos on treating my grass as well.
Thank you for this video. I am a senior who is trying to redo front yard. Having the ground wet is the way I have always work the dirt, BUT using the corner of the spade will be of great help. So easy, not sure why I didn't think of it, LOL!
Stepping sideways on the shovel was the very best tip in this video! I edged around 3 trees in my yard and using this tip definitely saved me some time and effort! Thank you!
Great concept. Been landscaping for 15 years and haven't seen it done quite like that yet. Next edge cut will be done this way. Workin smarter not harder brotha Thanks!!
I had been using the half moon and what a labor intensive job. Glad I stumbled onto ur video. Ur Technic on using the back edge entering the grass with stepping onto the shovel makes use less energy! Great video Silver!
Thanks for posting. This reminds me of a few videos I watched years ago, an old english guy. I have never used edging and my beds are always decent because you dig a nice deep edge, allowing the air to dry out any migratory roots when they hit that cliff.
Tip: use the strips of sod to fill in bare areas. We edged our yard and the neighbors and had enough to fill in where swing set had been removed. Free!
Yes......I keep the cut off edges and use the “best bits” to fill in any bare spaces in my lawn, loosening the soil and making a deep enough indentation for the “strip” to fit in nicely. Sort of like a hair transplant technique....using grass - lol. It soon grows in beautifully.
U got a new subscriber, I live in New England as well and my lawn is a disaster 80%weeds, I plan to do a lawn renovation in a few weeks by overseeding, I just applied tenacity following your recommendations Thank you
As a landscaper of many years, I've been telling people this since day one. These little shovels are the best to use. You can also fine tune that look with a weedeater but it isn't necessary most times. It's the little simple things that can make a yard stand out. Once you plant more and mulch, this bed will be completely different.
Exactly. This is how I do it. shovel me edge around the bed and instead of going back around with the shovel a quick hit with the trimmer to really make it even and pop & I'm done, until mulch or stone.
I'm so Thankful I found this video. I was edging a hard way. I bought me a fiskar edging spade can't wait to use it. I always wondered how people's yards have a crisp clean look. Now I know. I'm going to pull up all my flowers next month just to start this edging technique. And plant All perninnals. Thanks very much
Thanks for another great video! I love your channel. You do a great job of making each project look simple, easy, and low cost. You are great at filming, editing, and your voice narration it’s easy to listen to and follow. Thank you so much! Keep the videos coming!
For digging a trench or edging…this is the way I discovered too. i have doing it and wondered if it was relatively more efficient …. I have the power tools but for quick clean lines without all the gear, this method makes sense.
Nice video. I like your technique. As for the half moon edger, it's a great tool that's been around forever, you just have to understand how to use it. You can cut fresh edges with it but that's not its main purpose. A spade is better for that. Before the days of string trimmers every landscaper used them to clean up the edges of beds by shaving back the grass and the dirt a little bit. The original edge re-definer but much neater. With a sharp edge you lean the edger back at a slight angle and use a fast back and forth motion like you would to chop ice from a sidewalk. It takes practice and a steady hand but produces beautiful results.
Great video!! I do the exact same thing with the same kind of shovel. It's so easy and quick. If you're expecting to have an exact straight line, then I will use two cement nails placed at each beginning and end of the run, and tie a string low to the ground, and cut right along that string. If I want exact curves (don't use a garden hose), I will use a can of marking paint and determine the exact curves I want to see, then cut out right on the line. And it looks so fluid, and picture perfect.
Ha! I just used this technique with a flat edge square shove that i put a sharp edge on for my front sidewalk today before i saw this. I used a string edger (kept breaking), then pulled out my electric Black & Decker blade edger...worthless. So i thought about what is did as a kid when my dad wanted me to edge. Took a sharp blade and knifed out an edge along the grass. So, now I'll be using a square shovel. Thanks.
I always keep the BEST cut off edges and use these “best bits” to fill in any bare spaces in my lawn, loosening the soil and making a deep enough indentation for the “strip” to fit and press in nice and level - then water in well. Sort of like a hair transplant technique....using grass - lol. You can even use just small wedges of the cut offs for small bare areas. It soon grows in beautifully - and is the same grass type, in preference to the hassle of seeding patches - and waiting for them to grow. The grass seed may be a different type - and may show up as such when it grows, giving an un-uniform look.
I want to do that. We had new gas lines put down and they found large tree stumps so we have a ton of gaps in our yard. Do I just lay it down on the soil?
So smart to use the corner of the shovel to dig in. I’m going to try this. My muscle weakness means I can’t use a shovel like I used to but I think I could do this.
I did mine yesterday but didn't have the corner of the shovel technique that you show here although I have the shovel. I live in an HOA setting and the landscapers definitely do not do "detail" work and the ground while moist is also filled with stones. I see yours is quite defined as far as the growth of the lawn against the soil. I would bet that these lawns have never been rolled and each time they add bark they just continue to pile it on top plus I don't get much sun on the landscaping to allow for it to ever dry out much. I am going back out there today to do some more cleaning and will probably rake away the old bark and let them figure it out. LOL. The constant moisture makes it get a moldy residue underneath. Thanks for sharing your tips and advice. I am going to see if I can move out just a bit more to cut the edge like you did.
I bought that Fiskars shovel for a huge retaining wall project around my pool. It is built like a tank & extremely effective. Excellent at trenching & very comfortable to use. It's only weakness is that is doesn't hold much when used as a transfer shovel. But, you know, just use a transfer shovel...
This is what i use a flat or rounded shovel. I have 12 beds to edge out. It is labor intensive but works best. Circle beds i use the rounded one. He is right best after a rain.
I gotta say, I still prefer the half moon for this type of edging. Particularly when adding mulch and creating channels and creating height for the soil, and consistent angle as I see you doing on 3:42. With the half moon, this can be achieved all in one shot, and you can create a deeper edge if you were to add a thick layer of mulch and organic material. To me, it doesn't look like your edge will be deep enough, if you were to add a thick layer of mulch as it is likely to spill over on the grass, where stolons will grow over. I've done it using a spade, but find the half moon does a much superior job in the end.
We bought a house last year and the yard and lawn is huge, but it's an awful mess. Your videos gave me hope we can turn things around and your voice reminds me of videos I used for studying for school so it's strangely comforting. Thank you for your videos, I hope to have a beautiful lawn next year.
Such a very nice compliment. I really appreciate that. You can turn anything around just focus on the big things and don’t worry about small issues here and there. Step back and when it is looking good to you is what matters the most. Thanks again for the kind words.
I bought a house three years ago with extensive beds that were once amazing but had been neglected for a long time. I was freaking out about how much work there was to do, didn't know where to start, but a friend said, "this will take you five years to get straightened out." It was instantly relaxing. So just pick one job at a time, keep at it, and in a couple of years stand back and enjoy your progress!
If someone told you to "take a shovel and go edge that bed," you would figure out this is the best way to do it within a couple hours. There really isn't a better technique. Great explanation of it here
I love this video. It is simple, and yet using the tilt of the spade and the one foot walk is gonna be great! Now is the time for this, I am working hard at improving my flower beds, and have access to some nice clean mulch from the city that is a finer mulch than they used to have. It will be a great way to dress my beds. Oh, I love my grizzly spade. It is a bit heavier than typical spades at garden centers, but the weight helps me to not have to work as hard! Tilting it is gonna make the job a breeze! GREAT VIDEO The nice edge with the little set back will let me use my mower and not have to do as much trimming!
This was an excellent video and very timely has I need to edge my lawn but have been afraid of cutting into my irrigation system. I am a single older woman who can't pay someone to do everything for me. So this walking shovel method will be very, very helpful. Thank you so much.
Thank u sooo much!!! This makes this process easier! I have to say, I am cracking up bc I mentioned to husband to do this process on a wet ground....well...I got the water anyway and watered...not too much but this video proves it correct!!!! 🙌
If you're doing a long edge line or really trying to create a new edge the half moon will be more of a detriment. A good sharp full steel spade is all you need especially if the ground is a bit hard.
Thanks so much, I live in an apartment but want to clean up the little grassy area that "is mine". I've used one of those moon shaped things, but wasted my money. Thanks for the link, I'll order one asap. Nice presentation.
Brilliant. First time I used a half moon tool. Done an avg job. Using the shovel corner like you suggested and showed, worked a treat. Very happy with my results. Great demo
I do the same thing for beds. Walkways get done with the power edger though. I always save the cuttings to patch bare spots in the lawn. Here in Central Florida there are always bare spots to tend to. Any sod grown at home will grow better than what you get from the garden center as it is from sod farms in South Florida which is a different soil type. I do the same with any stray grass clumps I pull up from beds or between paving cracks.
I wouldn't call that shovel a spade shovel. That style was called a coal shovel or a straight shovel. A spade it shaped just like the card suite spades, it comes to a point. A tool like you showed with the crescent blade but a little more fancy, I believe called a bed edger or a whales tail works really well for this. It's not always the tool, but knowing what to do with it that makes the biggest difference.
I am a large scale commercial Landscaper that also does yearly maintenance of hundreds of thousands of ft of mulch and tree bed edges each year in Feb, and March. We use mostly a commercial disk blade turf edger. But for smaller jobs, we will occasionally use a tree spade (heavy steel/aluminum tree spade $65 - 110 each). First I have a crew member use a string trimmer to mark and clean up any edges that are still good using a ninety degree angle. The goal is to not expand the bed. If you are right handed you work left to right only using your arms to dig. 4 to 6 inches into the ground with a motion of 3 to 4 times into the ground. You then use your boot toe with the spade to flip the sod and dirt out of the slot. Final four steps is use a flat shovel and very quickly drag it along the edge; this will plow throw the dirt out of the edge. You use a flat shovel to drag out sidewalk edges also. You then use a metal leaf rake or hard rake to drag debris up away from the edge into piles. We then use a 5,6 or manure stall tine fork to clean up the piles "the goal is to leave dirt in the bed". We then string trim the edge at a ninety degree angle and we lastly we blow out the edge and any small clumps of dirt in the turf. Commercially we can average 150 ft per minute with a gas power machine with a crew of 4 persons. I don't need to use a string trimmer when I do it with a machine like a Turf Tech. We also don't need to remove any debris with a power edger. We don't expand the bed more than a 1/4 of a inch. As a home owner you could rent a Browning bed shaper from your local rental group, it is small grade for smaller jobs. All power bed shapers should be used in dry ground; best when ground is slightly cold. $60 to 100 dollars a day from home depot to rent a box bed shaper. Commercial bed shapers cost $4000 to 7000 new depending upon its features. Most landscape groups will charge you $110 to 160 per cubic yard to edge and mulch your bed plus additional fee for spring leaf removal and cleanup. Most likely hourly for spring cleanup depending upon the degree of work to be done and cost to remove debris. An average home using 6 to 12 cubic yards of mulch. Or if the home is in the southern usa, pine bales for beds or tree rings. Beware of dyed mulches made out of pallets or junk wood. It is prone to stain walks and driveways, and washes away with hard rains.
You’re right this method is best! I don’t have that shovel. I used a metal spatula to make my cut. I just hit it down with a Mallet. lol hey I used what I had. But now I’m going to purchase that shovel. No more MacGyver yard work! 🤣
Jim White I was thinking the same thing. I battle Bermuda grass most of the year here in Arizona. The Bermuda roots go too far down for this to be effective. During pool excavations they can find viable Bermuda grass roots as far down as eight feet from ground level.
@@newheaven5146 Florida is mostly sand. The northern grasses like rye or bluegrass just can't stand the heat down here. I'm from Virginia and I know how soft his grass is.
Some great tips here. Thanks for the video. But if I may, I noticed that your edge was a little crooked in one or two places. I suggest that you use string between two small stakes for straight sections or a garden hose for curved sections to mark out where you want to cut your edge.
I have used this technique for years - in Virginia, and also here in Florida. Absolutely THE easiest way to edge a landscape bed (IMO) and it is very important to have the ground well watered ahead of time, for best results.
That's my specialty when I edge up the beds 💪🏾 worked for a company called maxalea for some time and I've learned alot.. thanks for sharing your technique.
After doing my yard this year I really ended up back loving he shovel. You can go as slow or as fast you want when you adge and it gives a great edge without spending much money. Just get one of these fiskars shovels if you don't already have a good one. A sharp edge really helps.
Looks nice. We use a rounded edger and tilt it to an angle to make the cut. It helps support the mower tire , keeps grass from rolling over into bed , and stops the edge from getting crushed so often
You’re definitely correct about the Fiskar’s shovels being affordable and heavy duty tools. Going in with one edge and coming down to start the next step of shoveling also works very well. My only problem is that I can’t do this physically anymore. Great advice and channel though.
Thanks for the video it is helpful. My only feedback is that when you came back the second time to cut the grass, you should have tossed the grass pieces onto the grass, thus avoiding potential grass growing in the bed soil. You make extra work for yourself by doing it this way. It was also directly in front of you to throw the grass forward, instead of doing the final cut and then scooping it and turning backwards to toss it onto the bed. Great video, I will use this method in the spring. Cheers.

Thank you. I cannot afford to buy a 1/2 moon edger. I need to use what I have! I appreciate this. I’m going to try it after a rain.
That's beautiful. I don't have any bed edges like that but now I want some.
This was an excellent video and very timely has I need to edge my lawn but have been afraid of cutting into my irrigation system. I am a single older woman who can't pay someone to do everything for me. So this walking shovel method will be very, very helpful. Thank you so much.
Great tips, especially about pushing the spade at an angle and walking it along the edge. Thank you
Thank u sooo much!!! This makes this process easier! I have to say, I am cracking up bc I mentioned to husband to do this process on a wet ground....well...I got the water anyway and watered...not too much but this video proves it correct!!!! 🙌
Great tips...I use the left over chunks of grass to fill in dead spots especially along fence lines.
Thank you, and your tip is a great one too. Thanks
Thank you for this video. I'm 62 and not so spry anymore, so I really needed this. I'll let you know if I'm still standing when I'm done😂😅
The half moon works fantastic followed by a string trimmer weekly to keep it sharp. I do like your technique tho, looks effective
Great demo
So glad that it helped, thank you for watching and please feel free to share my video with others you think might benefit from. it. Best wishes.
I really enjoy your videos. Not only are they informative, but very relaxing, and enjoyable to watch!
The half moon shovel is good for the finishing touches. It makes it look smoother and it looks evened out perfectly with no shovel marks.
Im a gardener at a horticultural College and this is and awful technique with a dreadful finish.
@@danno633 what would you do differently ?
You are a clown
I do the same thing for beds. Walkways get done with the power edger though. I always save the cuttings to patch bare spots in the lawn. Here in Central Florida there are always bare spots to tend to. Any sod grown at home will grow better than what you get from the garden center as it is from sod farms in South Florida which is a different soil type. I do the same with any stray grass clumps I pull up from beds or between paving cracks.
Thank you so much I like your video, very effective even for an old lady like me I would wanted to trying.
Glad it was helpful and thank you for watching.
Excellent video. Concise, clear and to the point. I can’t wait to go home tonight and try this technique. I was going to rent a trencher… Thank you!!!
Wow. Great clear voice, video footage, and tips! Nice job!
Such a nice comment, I really appreciate it.
Your edges look great! Your technique made so much sense!
Hmm a straight edge shovel like he's using I've heard called a spade shovel, who knew?
Huh......who would have thought...Excellent Video....clear and right to the point....
Excellent post ! You made it look easy.. I'm gonna go edge my border now. Thanks !🙌🏼
Omg thank you! We just bought a house and I am going nuts spending money trying to make the yard look nice this really helps
Glad it was helpful. Check out my channel for many other DIY and Landscaping projects.
You’re right this method is best! I don’t have that shovel. I used a metal spatula to make my cut. I just hit it down with a Mallet. lol hey I used what I had. But now I’m going to purchase that shovel. No more MacGyver yard work! 🤣
Cool technique. Still prefer the controlled depth of the 1/2 moon edger--also an acquired technique but both work. Thanks for uploading!
Congrats on your Hall of Fame career! Go Raiders!
@@spookysog Lol. I get that a lot.
You’re the best on RUclips! Thanks man for sharing your tips.
I appreciate that! Very nice of you to say
Great video, sugestion, should of used a line to make a nice straight edge. Thanks!
Thank you, you’ve just saved me from going out and buying one of those half moon spades which I believed was my only option. 👌💕
Edgeing a bed like this makes me jealous of northern gardeners. My zone 7 bermuda us chuckling out there, saying yeah good luck with that.
Jim White I was thinking the same thing. I battle Bermuda grass most of the year here in Arizona. The Bermuda roots go too far down for this to be effective. During pool excavations they can find viable Bermuda grass roots as far down as eight feet from ground level.
Florida's St. Augustine grass laughs at this technique. Jealous of that northern "soft" grass.
Exactly
@@cathyblasco4497 Yep... it's not as simple as he portrays if you have bad grass and clay based soil. No shovel will work period.
@@newheaven5146 Florida is mostly sand. The northern grasses like rye or bluegrass just can't stand the heat down here. I'm from Virginia and I know how soft his grass is.
Thank you, I’m going to buy one of those shovels and get this job done 😊
Some great tips here. Thanks for the video. But if I may, I noticed that your edge was a little crooked in one or two places. I suggest that you use string between two small stakes for straight sections or a garden hose for curved sections to mark out where you want to cut your edge.
I use the straight edge of a flattened cardboard box, just moving it along as I go.
I have used this technique for years - in Virginia, and also here in Florida. Absolutely THE easiest way to edge a landscape bed (IMO) and it is very important to have the ground well watered ahead of time, for best results.
Hey great video. thanks for getting to the point quick and not waffling .. very helpful.
Thank you I really appreciate that
That's my specialty when I edge up the beds 💪🏾 worked for a company called maxalea for some time and I've learned alot.. thanks for sharing your technique.
Thank you for this video. It will be really helpful, just waiting on the rain. : )
😁🔥🔥🔥🔥❣️🔥🔥🔥 Thank you 🙏🏽 I’m doing this tomorrow!! It just rained.
Thank you! This makes edging look so much easier. I'm anxious to work in my garden and tidy it up.
After doing my yard this year I really ended up back loving he shovel. You can go as slow or as fast you want when you adge and it gives a great edge without spending much money. Just get one of these fiskars shovels if you don't already have a good one. A sharp edge really helps.
Thank you very much for this! It’s great to see a video where I don’t need to go out and buy expensive equipment. Now I’m excited to edge!!
You did a great job man. Very useful tips there.
Thank you for the kind moment and for watching. Best wishes to you.
Looks nice. We use a rounded edger and tilt it to an angle to make the cut. It helps support the mower tire , keeps grass from rolling over into bed , and stops the edge from getting crushed so often
Would you please share a link or pic of the rounded edger you're speaking of? Thank you!
Cheers.
Thank you
