25.06 is my go to rifle for medium size game. 1000 yards is asking a lot out of it. She will do it, but you better have a dead still day. Good presentation of a great cartridge.

The 25-06 Is one of the most underrated rounds currently out there. To me this round deserves more attention than it gets. Which is why I plan on buying me a Mossberg Patriot chambered in the 25-06 and I'm also going to get my Ruger American rifle out of layaway which is chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and do a comparison between the two and see which one does the best. I might even get me a Winchester xpr chambered in 6.8 western
and do a 3 way comparison with all 3 to see which one is the best. The best one will be my Elk gun the second best will be my deer gun and the 3rd one will be my Range gun. Let the test begin.

I grew up hunting Western Pennsylvania with military surplus rifles. My first new rifle was a Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06. We hunted gas line right of ways and shots could be 400 yards, hence the 25-06. When I was drafted in 1969, I sold that rifle to a friend. Last year, a friend of mine won a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) in 25-06, that he did not want! Well now, that 25-06 resides in my gun safe on the farm. I'm a happy camper.

Great Video . Growing up, an Old-Timer Mentor Guy, instructed me on the value / accuracy of the 25-06…. I finally purchased one last week, a M77 Ruger MK II in Boat Paddle stock, 24” barrel…. I spent some money scoping that beauty, with a 3 X 18, Leopold VX-6HD. Anyway, that rifle is a shooter, shooting a Barnes 100-grain, polymer bullet. I have not shot a 1000-yards yet, you have motivated me…. I’ll report back with the results…. Look forward to your realistic, Hands-On Channel, Great Stuff…. Thank You…

It does okay on coyotes and woodchucks. Other than that, it really isn't worth buying...Just kidding! It really is a great choice for antelope and mule deer at extended ranges. In fact, I think it's one of the ideal antelope cartridges!

I've had a special place in my heart for the 25-06 ever since I was 16 and went on an out of state deer hunt to Colorado with my brother, cousin and a friend from AZ who met up with us there. I missed a couple of deer with my 300 Win Magnum that hunt and promptly traded it in for a 243 after that trip. My friend from AZ drilled a little buck with one long shot at about 150 to 200 yards with his 25-06. I didn't see it but I still remember him dragging his buck up to us through the snow with that rifle slung over his shoulder. Never owned a 25-06 but sure would like to.

By far the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. 1/2 MOA gun all day long with a sporter barrel that's nowhere near free floating.

@kalmlykeabomb they are good firearms and really underrated or just not well known! People talk about the Tikka T3 but these m55 and 65s are awesome rifles. The 55 is a short action 2 front lugs like mauser or remington 700 and the 65 has the same front lugs as well as a rear lug like the rear lug on a mauser 98 but on both sides instead of just the right side! Dove tail on reciever like a sako! The standard and deluxe are both beautiful rifles and the deluxe has beautiful walnut with rosewood fore end cap and pistol cap! Great Finnish rifles that in my opinion are just as nice and strong as their sako Finnish competition at the time till sako bought them out! Tikka has always made great firearms why both Finnish sako and Tikka are both some of the most sought after mosins!

I used to do that. As a battalion anti-sniper many years ago I had a 7mm/.300 Weatherby Remington action with a McMillan barrel I used to regularly practice with at 1,000 yards. My Parker-Hale 1200V Super in .25-06 with handloaded Sierra 117 gr boattail spitzers in front of 53 grs of 4350 powder could hang right there with it if the wind wasn't too bad and the mirage didn't kick my butt. Loved that rifle. A coyote smoking machine.

25-06 is an excellent caliber for short or long range I hunt in Alabama on all types of Terrain and I went from 30-06 to the 25 cal 14 yrs ago due to a extremely well performed cartridge verses any of the 30 cals deadly results with a clean kill no tracking needed in 14 years of service so far . I own two a ruger no 1 and a Hawkeye left hand bolt action in mountain laminated stock tumbled stainless discontinued in 2008 . I’ve taken multiple deer , coyote , all types of larger game with no tracking dropped in there tracks best of all it kills clean no suffering and no messing up the meat .

My longest deer kill ever was with a Ruger 25-06 with a Nosler Partition reload I'd worked up. 880 yards. Threw the heart. My first thought was as he humped up, ( Never took a step ) and fell over was I'm finally going to get to recover a bullet. I was wrong. Went right threw him and it was a big buck, and kept on going. I had a plain old hunting scope, nothing fancy at all but I had a spotter and he was laying down my first shot. At the shot, ( At his antlers ) they instantly said five feet low. He then stood up, presented a perfect side shot, I held some Kentucky windage and dropped him in his tracks. I've never shot a thousand yards, at target or beast, but have taken many deer with my old Model 88 Winchester in .308 at half that distance or a little over. It's all in learning your rifle and doing a LOT of shooting. I'm 66 now and I've never lost a deer.

The whitetails (which I shoot severla yearly) I use 100 grain handload or off the shelf PSP generics. For my caribou hunt in 07 I used my own hand-loaded Nosler Partitions in 120 grain bullets and the same for the 2 elk hunts. Sadly I can’t afford those hunts anymore, the caribou hunt back then was 3500 or even 3000 I can’t recall the caribou hunts now are $7500 plus and $9000 for a real nice guaranteed hunt.

That looks like some fun. I've had some great times shooting long range steel with my heavy barrel Rem 700 BDL in 25-06. With the relatively small .257 bullets, dry dirt makes a better splash and is easier to call misses. Personal best with that rifle are hits on steel at 7/8 mile. 3/4 mile on a 3 x 3 ft plate are pretty repeatable if the wind cooperates. Before the recently released heavy 257 bullets, the Speer 120 gr SPBT had the best BC (G1 .480) and was the best performing bullet out of my rifle. Loaded to 3120 fps with RL 25. I am very strongly considering re-barreling with a 1:7.5 twist to start shooting the 135 gr target hybrid bullets from Berger. Finding brass the past few years has been a challenge, so forming out of Starline 270 win brass has been working great. Quick tip for your spotter, make concise and specific calls to the CENTER of the target, e.g. "come left 3 MOA and up a 1/2 MOA". It isn't super helpful to say things like where the general area where the miss was.

I bought one of the first Ruger “Varminter”with a 3/4 “heavy barrel “M77. For half a century it has maintained 1/2 Moa accuracy . It served as Tulsa Oklahoma‘a Police Department’s first “sniper rifle “. I’m convinced that it is one of the most accurate rifles ever made. It shoots one inch groups at 250 yards. It sports a Redfeild 4x12 power four plex with a with a range finder.

I have heard that the 2506 does not like heavy lead as most of them have to slow a twist rate ! One guy said he hoped some rifle company would produce rifles with twist of 1 in 7.5 -or -8 - & ammo co would start loading heavier , up to say 130g , with long bullet &high BC . Which they say could not be beat ! What do you say ??

I found the 150 grain fusion to be extremely accurate. 7mm mag at 660yads in Montana hit 5 out of 5 on a 14×11 inch steel target.
Great mule deer bullet. Not to mention the price.

Still trying to find the article. I think it was in American riflemen years ago. There was an article about a prolific groundhog hunter whose preferred rifle was a 25-06. According the article he killed a groundhog around 1500 yards away.

  • @johnstack4316

Great rifle for 600 yards and less. Out west if your going to shoot big game like mule deer and elk you need alot heavier bullet and powder to shoot beyond 600 yards. 300 Weatherby mag has tremendous knockdown power out to 1000 yards. 6.5 Creedmoor's are great at putting holes in paper at 1000 yards but have lousy ft pounds of energy at that distance. 7mm mag and bigger for hunting long distance. It's the ethical way to shoot. My cousin shoots 25-06 awsome deer rifle.

One of the best all around use calibers ever. You gotta be cutting bullet holes at a 100 to be on at 1000 for sure. 1000 isn't crap for this caliber. With that scope no problem.
