Lovely reaction as always! "Englishman in New York" (written by Sting) is based on a flamboyant writer/actor called Quentin Crisp who spent part of his life in New York. The cultural differences between New York and Quentin Crisp's quintessentially English lifestyle probably couldn't have been more opposite and is the basis of the song. A film, taking the same name, was later made about his life in New York (played by John Hurt).
This is a cover of a song by Sting (Gordon Sumner), who was born in England in 1951 and raised and educated in England. He worked as a teacher for a couple years before becoming the lead singer of The Police (1977-1986). "Englishman in New York" was released as a single in February 1988, from his second solo album "... Nothing Like the Sun", which was released in October 1987. It's a fusion of jazz, reggae, and rock. It didn't get much radio airplay in the US at the time. It spent 6 weeks on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in March and April 1988, peaking at #32. The album did well over time, however. In the US, it was certified double platinum (two million copies sold) in October 1991, about 4 years after its release. Gorran Kendall (bass guitarist) is the only person in this video who was actually born and raised in England. Ren is from Wales, which is on the island of Great Britain and part of the United Kingdom, but in some ways it's a different culture from England (e.g. Ren grew up speaking Welsh in addition to English). He'd been living in England for about a decade when this cover was recorded in 2018. Roman Axisa (rhythm guitarist) is French. I think he'd been living in England for about 4 years back then.
The English and Welsh are descended from two completely different tribes. The English are descended from the Germanic tribes, the Welsh from the Celts. That's why their culture is different. Welsh also has nothing to do with English, as you can hear at the beginning of "Seven Sins". By the way: the Welsh call their country Cymru.
@Dr.Brummel Maybe a few hundred years ago. Everyone pretty much has similar DNA today. I have family in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, and I was born English. I think even Rens parents are English and the only cultural difference is our accents. And even Ren has an English accent.
