That's because the tempo is faster and the key is higher by a half step. I also love the way the bass player is interpreting it live better than the recorded version. All those together make the difference.
Better arrangement than the record, no wonder that guy was freaking out in the audience - it would have been aewome to hear and see this live. RIP Soul Lady.
I was in Cincinnati for Jazz Festival weekend. Aretha headlined Friday night and Natalie Cole Saturday night. The announcer billed Ms. Cole as the new Queen of Soul. Aretha refused to take the stage. Most of the audience new why! After undetermined about of time the dark stadium lit up flashing Aretha Queen of Soul. "Touch Me Up" was one of the songs Aretha sung. The high notes were present. And Aretha hit notes never heard before. Never mentioned the problem, but talked to us!
I was there that night in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the Jubilee Auditorium when sister 'Re brought down the house on Valentine's Day. She asked for somebody to come up and dance with her. Me and another fellow didn't need a second invite and we "bumped" with the Queen of Soul for about a minute for so. I am disappointed that our moment is cut from this this clip, but any least I can relive Aretha's magic preforming this Lamont Dozier song from her "Sweet Passion" album!
@5:30 the party begins . . .Queen begins a belting performance, then she sends it off after her "look out look out" anybody else catch that, almost as if she was out souling herself ....and her control ovrr the background singers. Their continuous "touch me up" then the call and response! too. . . much to study! that's why she's Reigning Queen
It's amazing how Aretha can take a nondescript disco song and still make it come alive. She took that one to church! Aretha usually did not do those moves outside of church. She was feeling it!
Aretha stated in an interview that she had always dreamed of being a ballerina 🩰. Interestingly enough, you can almost see her go back to her childhood at 6:15 as she dances gracefully as a ballerina… check out those dance moves 🔥 Honorable mentions: Background singers! 🔥🔥🔥
I really feel that this live version deserved a 12” single release to be distributed to the discos/clubs of the day. And a shorter version for individuals who wanted it for personal use. It was too good to only be for this one time concert shown on Canadian TV.
Aretha's legacy includes R&B, jazz, easy listening, rock, rock-n-roll, opera and gospel! She was also a gifted songwriter and brilliant pianist. Not to mention a voice so unique that it was declared a National Treasure! No one could clearly define what her voice had that made her stand out from all of the others. Some said soul. Others said life experience! All I know is that Aretha's voice carried a truth that went way beyond the lyrics of a song, i.e. (her moaning on Going Down Slow). She didn't have to use words/ lyrics in a song she was singing to be felt, understood and make me say and feel and even shout out loud, "That's right Aretha"! Just like she was sitting right there next too me even though it was just the CD or album/45 that I was playing. Aretha's voice is a "once in a lifetime blessing/experience! God Bless her for sharing her voice with us.
Just coming back in here again because I LOVE this version so much. Everything about it is praise worthy. Aretha, the background vocals, the orchestra, and H.B. Barnum directing and dancing back there while directing. Also, the audience was pumped and that just encouraged her to really give it to them.
It was the 70's what did you expect her to wear, and plus her popularity wasn't going down at the time its was her albums, she was still packing crowds and stadiums with that outragously awesome voice of hers.
The album that this song is from was so highly underrated....it in option was one of her best, it is certainly in the top 3 of my favorites from her .the album is entitled "sweet passion" from 1978.
This was an era of great female singers, all powerhouses in their own right: Aretha Franklin; Chaka Khan; Diana Ross; Gladys Knight; Barbra Streisand; Nina Simone; Roberta Flack; Stevie Nicks; Donna Summer; Linda Ronstadt; Tina Turner; Natalie Cole; Candi Staton; Dusty Springfield; Etta James; Dionne Warwick; Patti LaBelle; Dolly Parton; Nancy Wilson; Joni Mitchell; Shirley Bassey; Carly Simon; Tammy Wynette; Stephanie Mills; Jane Olivor; Janis Joplin; Ann Wilson of Heart; etc., etc., etc...
THE 49ERS tribute "Touch Me" brought me here - this QUEEN rules in all genres of music - thank you for posting but one of many, many Aretha original dance classics - props to Lamont Dozier - DAVEDJ
The applause she got during this exstravaganza from the crowd was well deserve do to her vesatile god givin talent that she employees to the appeal of her fans.
I never seen live Aretha Franklin concert, top notch musicians as kid I heard her music then as a teenagers and now, grown , just discovered Meadows of Springtime, a true gem in the first order
@1joker88 She said, "Give me 1 more Eight", meaning 8 more bars of music. The song has an 8 measure introduction, but she wasn't quite ready to start yet, so she wanted them to cycle around to the introduction again. If you notice, the oiano player caught her cue and started playing what the horns played by at the beginning of the song, to give her more time to get ready.
+SoulSerenade Possibly, but it is common for musicians, and Aretha speaks in musical terms, for expediency, she would say "One more time around" because musical phrases are counted in eights, but she used shorthand to say, "Give me one more 8".
she called Tina because Tina owns the stage with her voice and moves.Aretha owns it with her voice. There are many queens and Tina is the Queen of Rock and Rock while Aretha is the Queen of Soul

Stop trying to apologize. It is not just about singing which Aretha is the best of course. Aretha's persona is as a Queen of it all. The others are just part of her back up.
Another end of the era Atlantic Records cut that sounds hellafied better live than on the record. If all of Sweet Passion had this type of energy, the album would have been a stone smash. I think Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin were so busy following behind Roberta Flack being so self contained they forgot bout Ree. This is also after the first of two throat surgeries to remove the damage from Aretha's smoking, and you can tell her vocal range changed tremendously.
I wonder why Aretha and her sister stopped collaberating together. Carolyn contributed greatly to Aretha 's success through out her early career . They must have had a fall out . DOes any one know more info?
