Diet soda has helped me lose 70 pounds this year. During quarantine one of my goals was to lose 30 pounds but I ruptured my hamstring May of 2020. During my recovery time I discovered Greg Doucette and did as much research as I could and Greg said diet soda is fine so I gave it a shot. Diet soda is what got me from a chubby teen into a lean adult. I almost never eat sweets because I just don't want them, but if I only drank water I'd probably crave things like fruit juice a lot more
I think it’s pretty clear that when you actually do more than 5 minutes of research you can conclude that diet soda is so much better than regular soda. But this leaves the question of why did so many big organizations and figures run a smear campaign against diet soda? What were they trying to achieve?
Literally 2 months ago I was 6'5" tall and 415 pounds. I was an over the road driver with high cholesterol/high blood pressure. And a heavy smoker. In 2 months, I changed to diet soda, regular portions of food, no seconds. I have lost over 50 lbs. It is not just about changing your drinks, it's changing your diet. Truth is, reducing your intake of sugar, and salt and eating normal portions instead of over eating will shed the pounds. Being active also helps. Reducing how much I eat, caused my stomach to shrink. So it no longer takes as much food to get full. 🙃 I'm happy with my diet but I'm not there yet. My goal is 285 lbs. I'm still 360.
I never thought diet soda made me fat. I quit drinking it after about 35-40 years of Tab, Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Mtn Dew, Diet Coke because I was concerned about the possible effects on gut health and overall health. It was also about cutting out carbonation and caffeine. I would consume around a gallon of diet pop a day, so I realize I'm probably an outlier on the consumption curve...which is also part of why I figured it was better to eliminate it. Yes, I theoretically could have cut back, but that doesn't really work for me. I still think diet pop is better for you than drinking sugar pop (calories). ymmv

Most diet sodas are sweetened with aspartame, which gives me headaches and stomach troubles if I consume more than 2 or 3 servings of it. However, I found carbonated "fruit juices" that claim 0 calories per bottle and are sweetened with sucralose, and they work great

A doctor told me this once when I asked him about diet soda. he said they are great but he saw many patients who ate huge portions except with a diet soda thinking they were doing good.

it would be interesting to see the difference in caffeine intake between the groups, since there is caffeine in many diet drinks. caffeine can be an appetite suppressant.
Even though I did incorporates my favorite foods, and stayed within the calorie deficit. And ofc still having high fiber, protein fruits and veggies ad overall healthy meals. I will never forget the times where I just really wanted to stay disciplined, and didn't want to binge. And what stopped me from binging? An ice, crisp, cold, diet coke. It literally saved me. Those nights, when I was stressed from classes. My cholesterol was high. Blood pressure was high. I was 250lbs at 5'10'' (21 male). With the help of diet soda, I lost 60lbs and am now sitting at 190. Diet soda has helped me sm. I still got more to go. But nothing ever beats it. Not a low calorie dessert, not a anabolic pancake. Diet Soda. Give it a try. It won't hurt you
Hi.. isn't there an option that is less sweet in your country? Like here we have sugar free coke, then we have sugar free coke with a "light taste". And you could try xylitol gum too. Cinnamon flavour is amazing
The group that drank the diet soda was getting caffeine compared to none with water. Could that have had an effect on their energy, thermogenesis, and weight loss?
It’s not a lot of caffeine, 35-50 ml per can, two cans a day, but that’s possible. To lose (or not regain) 5 kg in a year you just need a 100 kcal daily deficit. A little more energy, a little less snacking, and you’re there.
There's less caffeine in 24oz of diet soda than a regular coffee. You don't get a huge energy out difference. And we don't know the coffee consumption of all participants, the other group could even have consumed more.
@@jamie5mauser I know they compared it to water, that is not what I am saying . I mean that you don't really consider the equivalent of one cup of coffe "energy out". That amout of caffeine will not make a significant difference on a weight loss.
I switched from diet soda to only water. I not only lost weight without even trying but all my cravings stopped as well. So I have no idea what you're talking about.
At the start of 2021 i found out I was 285 pounds, that is very heavy especially for being 5'4. Diet soda was one of the first things i switched to after about a month of water + lemon straight (just couldn't do it anymore) and a year later I'm down 105 pounds 🤙🏼 of course diet soda wasn't the only change i made but it has kept me consistent and i haven't missed non diet soda at all
Nice video, and great explanations of the studies, Layne. Will point to this video of someone claims artificial sweeteners are unhealthy, or cause weight gain
Very informative. I don’t drink diet soda but I drink carbonated drinks like Perrier and club soda. It helps me feel full and I believe it is helps keep me at a steady healthy weight.
Of all the diet colas, for 24oz you get at most 110mg of caffeine (Mountain Dew), while diet Pepsi has 72mg and diet Coke 92mg. That's less than a 12oz coffee. That wouldn't make a huge impact on appetite.
@@Pharm-DH It looks like 24oz was the minimum amount they had to consume, so I guess it's possible that they consumed significantly more, and perhaps then the caffeine could become a factor in appetite suppression. Cool study regardless.
If I remember from back in the day when I was an energy drink junkie high school student trying to stay away 2 litres of coke for one coffee's worth of caffeine (so it's unlikely the caffeine has such an effect when drinking diet sodas as 2 litres equal one coffee).
I drink around 150-200 ml coke zero or Pepsi max every day, also take sweeteners with my tea, no weight gained. I am on a calorie deficit and losing weight.
I'm certain that if you drink a huge amount like 6+ cans per day it gives you some gut issues (this is true of any carbonated drink) but nothing that would cause weight gain.
My understanding is that saccharine does increase cravings in a compensatory manner but none of the other non nutritive sweeteners have been shown to. I don't think that saccharine is used in any diet drinks, though.
"Researchers at Tufts University, studying several thousand men and women, found that women who regularly drank cola-based sodas -- three or more a day -- had almost 4% lower bone mineral density in the hip, even though researchers controlled for calcium and vitamin D intake. But women who drank non-cola soft drinks, like Sprite or Mountain Dew, didn't appear to have lower bone density."
I only drink diet soda, 6-8 liters every day for the last 20 years. I’ve always been around 150lbs at 6ft tall. I’m also a ultra endurance runner, up to 100 mile races. And you’re right the fake sugar (I use in everything) makes me not want things with real sugar. The whole diet thing is bad for you in BS 🤷♂️
If you can have diet soda as part of a sensible diet, I am pretty sure that's harmless. If you have to have at least one everyday 'cause you're hooked on the taste but feel like you need a bag of chips or a pizza along with it to fully enjoy, that's where it could go sideways for weight management. But that's not the soda's fault, it's the brain wiring poor choices into habit.
I could bet these same people that think diet soda makes you fat, tell you that to lose weight it doesn't matter if you have all of the "good fats" you want and that calories doesn't even exist!
Diet soda help me suppress me craving for sweets on last year and half since i started the fat lose diet and it helped me from my personal experience this video proves that this man is saying some great shit respect
I used to drink 4- 5 cans of regular soda daily (terrible, I know), but I dropped to 1- 2 cans daily and did intermittent fasting. My weight dropped from 240 lbs to 190 lbs in about 6- 8 months, but I've been stuck at 190 ever since. I mostly drink water and tea now, but I still crave soda. I'm going to switch to Dr. Pepper Zero and see if that helps me lose my last 50 lbs (along with my daily walks of 10,000 steps and some lifting).
Calories in vs calories out. Eat what works for you to keep to the goals you want. As long as getting an artificial sweet taste does not make you UberEats a whole cheesecake it’s fine. People look at studies like “Overweight people tend to drink diet soda”. Does not take a PHD in philosophy to figure that one out. I see overweight people on treadmills. Does that mean treadmills make you gain weight?
thank you for a very good video anda good channel regarding nutrition. i jumped on the scare train of sweeteners, now i jump off it. still not consuming a lot, barely a can a week.
People don't understand that correlation and causation are not the same thing and people are afraid from the word "artificial" because they think that "natural" is somewhat better. This is why stevia succeeded a lot even tho it cost much more and taste worse than almost any other artificial sweetener, but it's from nature so people think it's better.
Diet soda are having caffeine also help as a preworkout. I always have coffee as preworkout prior to my cardio. Yes, I agree that artificial sweeteners fix my sugar cravings. I get it from my protein shake.

it would be interesting to see the difference in caffeine intake between the groups, since there is caffeine in many diet drinks. caffeine can be an appetite suppressant.
It won't hurt you
My only problem with diet soda is I get addicted to them to the point where I’ll drink 10 plus a day and I don’t want to drink that many.
Hi.. isn't there an option that is less sweet in your country?
Like here we have sugar free coke, then we have sugar free coke with a "light taste".
And you could try xylitol gum too. Cinnamon flavour is amazing
Yeh it’s really not that hard to control yourself
The drinking break made me put a like your video 😅
The group that drank the diet soda was getting caffeine compared to none with water. Could that have had an effect on their energy, thermogenesis, and weight loss?
Definitely suppressed their appetite as caffeine tends to do.
It’s not a lot of caffeine, 35-50 ml per can, two cans a day, but that’s possible. To lose (or not regain) 5 kg in a year you just need a 100 kcal daily deficit. A little more energy, a little less snacking, and you’re there.
Diet soda has more caffeine than water too. More energy out?
There's less caffeine in 24oz of diet soda than a regular coffee. You don't get a huge energy out difference. And we don't know the coffee consumption of all participants, the other group could even have consumed more.
@@Pharm-DH the study isn't comparing diet soda to coffee...it's comparing diet soda to water. Diet soda has more caffeine than water
@@jamie5mauser I know they compared it to water, that is not what I am saying . I mean that you don't really consider the equivalent of one cup of coffe "energy out". That amout of caffeine will not make a significant difference on a weight loss.
This makes me happy because I'm quitting drinking regular soda and instead supplementing in sparkling water and diet dr pepper
I switched from diet soda to only water. I not only lost weight without even trying but all my cravings stopped as well. So I have no idea what you're talking about.
The swag of Layne’s sip😂👌🏼
2:12 reminds me of a comic (I think xkcd) "remember, even a gun could kill everything on a Petri dish"
Thanks for the great info and description of the study. Hopefully it gets shared around, and educates everybody.
At the start of 2021 i found out I was 285 pounds, that is very heavy especially for being 5'4. Diet soda was one of the first things i switched to after about a month of water + lemon straight (just couldn't do it anymore) and a year later I'm down 105 pounds 🤙🏼 of course diet soda wasn't the only change i made but it has kept me consistent and i haven't missed non diet soda at all
OMG huge graaaaaaats!! Diet soda is amazing 💜
Awesome content as always! Great channel!
Lost 115 pounds drinking diet soda and sweetener based drinks. So yeah quick no from me being proof. I do 2000 calories. Maintenance is 3300 or so
I'm curious what the caffeine content in the diet soda used by the control group was, and if that could be part of the appetite suppressant factor.
This is what I was thinking
This is really good info. Thank you for the video
I drink around 150-200 ml coke zero or Pepsi max every day, also take sweeteners with my tea, no weight gained. I am on a calorie deficit and losing weight.
At first I thought it was, "Does Diet Soda Make You Fart?!"
and it does!
I think it comes down to portion sizes if you drink 2 diet sodas that’s better then drinking a 12 pack in 1 sitting.
Were they drinking caffeinated or noncaffeinated diet drinks?
I'm certain that if you drink a huge amount like 6+ cans per day it gives you some gut issues (this is true of any carbonated drink) but nothing that would cause weight gain.
Why 24oz of water? Hydration a factor on the effect? What if its the carbonation? Sparkling water vs diet soda?
My understanding is that saccharine does increase cravings in a compensatory manner but none of the other non nutritive sweeteners have been shown to. I don't think that saccharine is used in any diet drinks, though.
"Researchers at Tufts University, studying several thousand men and women, found that women who regularly drank cola-based sodas -- three or more a day -- had almost 4% lower bone mineral density in the hip, even though researchers controlled for calcium and vitamin D intake. But women who drank non-cola soft drinks, like Sprite or Mountain Dew, didn't appear to have lower bone density."
You are such an A-hole LOL!!!!! How dare you drink soda in the middle of the video?!! I'm in tears! Excellent as always man! Keep bringing the facts!🤣
Jesus 6-8 liters
You didn't get diabetes?
Great vid layne
If you can have diet soda as part of a sensible diet, I am pretty sure that's harmless. If you have to have at least one everyday 'cause you're hooked on the taste but feel like you need a bag of chips or a pizza along with it to fully enjoy, that's where it could go sideways for weight management. But that's not the soda's fault, it's the brain wiring poor choices into habit.
The topic of artificial sweetener's effect on micro bioms that interest me most. I sure hope you're right. I love diet soda.
If i am really craving for some sugar or soda, i just take one sip of diet soda and the craving is gone. It helps me to not start binge eating.
Great content! Thank you Layne
Artificial sweeteners help me so much. I use them in coffee, homemade drinks, and sugar free gum.
Just wondering, what’s a normal intake of diet soda as mentioned in the video?
1 can per day
Layne, can you do a response on 'negative' calorie foods.
Is beer better than diet soda?
Someone please reply...if I drink 2 liters of Coca Cola Zero a day, will that make me gain weight
Diet soda makes me hungry. I also have IR, so don’t know if that is a factor.
Do you think it’s the soda itself is the appetite suppressant. I find sparkling water gives that same effect or is the sweetness?
what is normal amounts ?. define normal amounts 1 can/day . 500ml/day ?
what about consuming large amount of phosphoric acid which is main ingredient of diet coke?
We need to know how the drink is metabolized. We need to know the pathways, The natural sugar has an advantage that it's "natural"
I am underweight and want to gain weight, should I have Diet soda or Normal soda?
Normal soda.
I use to drink a coke zero everyday and I developed a pain in my side. Once I stopped the coke the pain went away
thank you for a very good video anda good channel regarding nutrition. i jumped on the scare train of sweeteners, now i jump off it. still not consuming a lot, barely a can a week.
They're 0 calories I will never understand how they got demonized lmao
Sugar cane and corn syrup industry?
@@GrilledCheeseDanny True....how did anyone fall for that though lol
People don't understand that correlation and causation are not the same thing and people are afraid from the word "artificial" because they think that "natural" is somewhat better. This is why stevia succeeded a lot even tho it cost much more and taste worse than almost any other artificial sweetener, but it's from nature so people think it's better.
People didn't think they could have their cake and eat it too.
Are the linings on tins and cans for can foods still bad for you?
Diet soda are having caffeine also help as a preworkout. I always have coffee as preworkout prior to my cardio. Yes, I agree that artificial sweeteners fix my sugar cravings. I get it from my protein shake.
