- Regardless of your locs maintenance technique, you should see your loctician every 4- 6 weeks.
For a palm rolling maintenance and a good loc wash. Spoil yourself.
Even if you are interlocking or crocheting, get your loctician to evaluate your hair monthly so you don't come up with, "My locs are breaking, and I don't know why."
If you stick to a consistent loc maintenance routine, you will have no problems.
You do it with your car, your nails, your waxing routine if you do that, your dental care, etc.
Add your locs maintenance routine into your routines. You wouldn't skip a car oil change, would you?

Every 3 months. 4x a year. This is my 2nd set. First set was 8 years and my hair was thick & healthy af. I’m a year into my new set. 💯
100% agree. Every 3 months allows your hair to thicken out thoroughly.
Why did you cut them
Im not at my 1yr mark yet and I prefer not to retwist too often. I started out going every 6 weeks but went from October-January with zero retwists and I was perfectly ok with my choice. Currently I'm washing and retwisting in my own only because I'm working in person more often😭

Paying for loc maintenance in New York City is crazy. That's why I'm going to loc detox, wash, condition and crochet retwist it myself. I think people should learn to retwist their loc so they can minimize and eliminate going to a loctician
I do it myself comes out just as good as if I went to a loctician. Me personally I refuse to pay for something I can do myself. Takes me 3 hours but saves me $100

I retwist every six months to prevent my thick locs from thinning i never go or have been to a loctician because for one they over price you and two over twist your locs causing alopecia

This is my biggest fear. I do not want bald spots or thinning locs. 9 months in and I'm still not completed loc'd but I am finally ok with the journey. I want healthy locs over pretty locs.

For me, its not about being stingy. Every loctician ive visited always make my hair too tight to the extent that id have ro take pain relief medication. I had to stop going. And the gel they use always leave buildup in my locs.

Yea if you want your end goal to be a Michael Jordan. Retwisting your hair should be something done every 2-3 months. Yes you ritually wash it but don’t retwist it that often

Wash weekly? I’m so glad to hear you say that. I’ve been told that was too much and once a month is best. I exercise and sweat way to often much to not shampoo my hair. Thank you for sharing this.
Wash as often as you want to. Pat down n squeeze to dry instead of wrangling like we do clothes.
My son got his first locs done and they said we can't wash his hair until April. We're in December.
@@db6881 He should be washing his hair every 3weeks for starters. That is how the hair will lock up. It needs water. If it unravels...retwist it. I hope this helps.
@ohsnapitsvon Thank you he had an appointment in December and they said his hair has locked and they washed it for him.. He hasn't complained about itching or anything and he's due a re-twist I'm hoping to take him in the next 2 to 3 weeks (just waiting to get paid) so he'll have another wash then. Every loctician I’ve been to (only 3) have failed me 😭
And one of them I helped along (I had about 200-225 locks at that time) asked me “How do you do that?” 💀 I say ah ah that’s my secret! But I’ve been doing my own head for about 17 years now, still a baby 😌

Yes... I was going every 6 weeks and my hair went to thinning cause it was too tight. I think it varies in your hair texture as well, so 4 to 5 time out the year is enough for me.
Yeah I think your hair texture makes a difference and your method of retightening and the size of your locs. I have multi textured hair that's fine and small mini locs which I realized after getting loc'd that it could be a problem down the road with thinning, so interlocking ever 4 weeks would be a bad thing for me, I can go 6 and possibly up to 8 weeks but I try not to push it past that depending on how much new growth I have. In between when I wash after I take out the barrel rolls and wear out for a few days I'll wash my own hair and retwist lightly here and there to make sure the locs aren't being strained or to thin until it's time to see my stylist again.

They told me I was washing mine too much, every two weeks. My hair is so curly that it's hard to loc. I was told to at least wait a month in between my washes.

I do semi free form. I get my loc retwised after three months or so. My hair loctician only charges $65 for loc and style. She has over 10 years of experience .
I don't have to see a professional. I like retwisting my own hair it's relaxing to me 🤷🏾. I don't want others touching my head. I also do an awesome job considering that I started my own locs

Oh so the nappest it is the better. So I just started I spray Rose glycerin every day. Cause my hair absorbeds so much & Jamaican black castor oil for scalp I thank you for letting me know 4-6wks
i got my first retwist after starting 3 wks cuz of prom, den my 2nd 2 wks after cuz i was receiving a scholarship award frm my school district (both were ass cuz both not locticians) but my 3rd retwist was 3 wks after cuz of graduation n i acc went to a loctician cuz my stylist cancelled on me n my hair had looked sm more mature den i expected. the loctician said majority of em was locced i was so happy cuz if i went to my stylist she wouldn’t had done em well frl

How often a person hets a retwist actually deipn how old the loca are amd yhe texture of a person's hair. If they're in the beginning stages, then yeah, 4-6 weeks becaus of unraveling. But once them atrands are locd you can retwist twice a year and just keep the haor washed and your hair should be healthier unless theres some health issues going on

I just started my loc journey like a couple of weeks ago and my hair is starting to un Ravel, and I am trying to learn how to leave it alone.
I’m boutta be 4 months may 10th and I got a retwist since March 13th
I was thinking, why would I pay for a retwist that keeps unraveling every time I wash my hair. Then I discovered that it's not only the twisting of the locs that helps them form but the parting as well. I lightly wash my hair every other day, even after a retwist, because the parting remains even when the palm rolling unravels a bit. It works!

My hair is thin and I have small Locs that grows slowly. If I wait 2 months without a retwist I'll have a lil new growth not much and it seems like the longer I wait for a retwist my hair get thinner in the back. Thinking about cutting them off and getting bigger Locs my Locs parts and size are too small.
