      @@yobhsiFehT It's not even a rumor. I heard one RUclipsr talk about a DAW, but another thought that SSL is positioned to make a modular interface/console since they have the controllers, the 360 software, summing mixers, and interfaces. I was hoping for a little more out of this interface, but their target appears to Audient rather than integrating with their existing products.

    What it really needed most was an ADAT input for expandability. Glade they added it to the new one. I think this is a gamechanger and will lead to many more pros using this interface.

    • @RideTheLightning93
      @RideTheLightning93 Год назад +1

      The major downside is that they added four ports to the front when the 2+ had a perfect rear-only layout :/ It's a desktop interface and I don't need cables in the front, so the 2+ it is. What a bummer.
      Also, do the two Hi-Z inputs in the front disable the first two microphone preamps on the back? I know Audient's EVO 8 does this, for instance.

    • @TheDilligan
      @TheDilligan Год назад +1

      @@RideTheLightning93 I imagine the front ports are just a convenience option if you are sitting at the desk and want to plug a guitar directly in. I bet you can just as easily only use the back ports.

      @@SMEL night and day between UAD and SSL. In terms of how I use it. In sounds, it’s really hard to describe because most of interfaces will sound similar but not as clean as a high end preamp like on a UAD. I’ve had latency problems with my SSL, for Idk why, I was using the same computer. But now as I’ve upgraded my system, it doesn’t really matter since UAD has almost zero latency monitoring since it has it’s own processing. That itself is the “experience” that is incomparable. I am speaking as a guitarist who practices a lot in the box. And also a producer/engineer who does this on the side.

    very nice, concise explainer Mitch,. I have an SSL 2+ (bought from Sweetwater of course). I bought it after all my existing interfaces showed either quirks or complete failures on my first M1 Mac (a MacBook Air A1). Then I got a MBP 14" M1pro. I tried the MOTU product and it was worse than the old USB A/Intel CPU generation AIs. After talking with Richie, my SE, and my own research, I decided the SSL 2+ would get the job done with lots of desirable, modern, compatible features. Boy were the two Rich's right that this was the right system for me. I love it and it works on all my M1/M? Macs perfectly.
    The problem is I need 4 inputs for my current work. The older interfaces I have that support that would require me to configure and use older Intel Macs. Once you go M1 you don't look back. My first question was does SSL have an upgraded product to the SSL 2+. YES. Is it reasonably affordable: YES and no. In Jan the cash should flow. Also need new guitar (excellent value such as Fender Mexican Tele or Strat or maybe even classic vibe and small tube amp head (low wattage). But all that other quipment doesn't come into scope until the audio interface and audio signals are all properly cared for. Figuring $1-2k to get things to where I want them for 2024. Thanks for turning us on to this SSL 12. I will be buying one.

    Alright sweetwater, was a loyal customer I need an answer to this: Why is Mitch wearing both a lab mic & a headset thing? You guys trying to pull off some sort of dual mic feedback prevention thing? Because that would be pretty cool...

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Год назад

      Thanks for watching - the two mics weren’t for feedback prevention or for redundancy as some have suggested (those are good guesses though!). I was using one mic to feed into the SSL12 so there was signal for the demo. But we needed a separate voice feed that wasn’t affected when I moved faders, changed settings, etc., during the demo. We did cut to the mic feeding the SSL12 when I switched Legacy 4K on and off.
      Hope this helps,
      Mitch

      @@sweetwater Ahhh, I see, that makes a lot of sense. Of course you'd need a separate feed that isn't affected by what you're currently demoing, I was just too focused on the product itself since it's one that I'm pretty interested in (I've been on an SSL kick lately, basically emulating every part of an SSL 4000 that I can without actually buying one, and this would be an awesome addition to that, maybe to add it through ADAT to my current rig.) My guess about the feedback thing, was based off seeing how the Grateful Dead used their monstrous sound system, the Wall of Sound, and hearing about how they used a 2-mic system to kill feedback since there was just no possible way to not have a mic facing a speaker. It was pretty wild & interesting system they had going. And I also assumed you weren't doing some sort of "lets record 2 mics at a time and choose which we like better" thing either haha I'm sure you're past that stage, and probably know what you like by now.
      So thanks for the response! It's just one more reason why I LOVE you guys and will continue to shop there even when I can get better discounts other places. Service is more important than anything for musicians, I believe, and Sweetwater is killing the game in every way possible. I just wish I was over there teaching music instead of here in South Bend, I really think you guys are the best company in the world, especially when it comes to your employees. You're an industry role model, in every way. So thanks!

      It's got 4 dedicated outputs on the rear but the cool thing is you can also re-purpose the HP A and HP B as additional Line Outputs if you like (giving you 6 total), although granted 2 will be used for monitors at least.

    SSL and other Interface manufacturers should take a look at the Steinberg UR28M, it's a phenomenal interface with a perfect selection of front panel controls AND SPDIF!!! it needs to be copied IMO. I don't like front facing input jacks. it just creates desk mess.

    • @MarlonKingShow
      @MarlonKingShow Год назад

      Hey, I have the ur28m also, its a tough cookie to beat. I'm just not a fan of the mic pres. I also would disagree on the headphones and di not being on the front. That is my one frustration with the ur28m as I think for quick plug and play makes more sense for front agree for something always plugged in, back is preferable.
      Have you been tempted to upgrade yet?

    • @Harrysound
      @Harrysound Год назад +1

      @@MarlonKingShow yes I have been. The UR28m is 10 years old, thankfully it’s not discontinued. Nothing beats it. Certainly not in desktop form. The design of most interfaces are clearly about construction costs rather than real world work flow. I use an AXe FX via SPDIF, that gets rid of the issues of balancing analogue stereo inputs and needless AD conversions. Most high end interfaces have SPDIF but I don’t want a rank unit and I don’t need 8 analogue ins or whatever. The dim switch and mono, mute switches are super useful on the UR28m. I haven’t made use of the mix button until recently where I would put a track in Cubase the entire length of my project set to mix 2 then use the mix button to switch between my signal and what is a reference track. The UR28m is so close to perfect for 90% of home studios, it just needs that update of modern features like bus power.

    I saw "12" and hoped for a moment that they actually made an interface that would output 12 channels for summing with the SSL Six. Guess I was hoping too much. ADAT in only? Really? At least with an ADAT out and a convertor, it would be a cheaper way of getting 12 output channels. You'd think they would make an interface that would go along with one of their best selling products.

    As far as I can see, SSL is slowly going the way of UAD ANTELOPE, the next step will be dsp cards with their own plugins, so it will be a serious blow to competitors in my opinion.

    Can you use the preamps in standalone mode to another interface?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  6 месяцев назад

      Hello - great question. There is not a standalone mode for this - it would have to be used as the audio interface. On Mac you might be able to configure an aggregate device with your other interface, but in general the easiest solution would be to find an analog preamp. You can browse our selection here:
