The price for the amount of stuff you get is excellent. thinking about picking one up as I get more into multi tracking jazz improv with some friends of mine! Thanks for the review!
Great video! The SSL interfaces have been a great add to a crowded market. I was recently looking for a new interface and ended up getting the Audient ID44 but i was looking at the SSL interfaces as well. The 4k switch is interesting. I think more recording people need to start commiting to sounds and just going with them and not getting option paralysis. But thats just my thoughts
I agree, it's an art form that people have drifted away from and there's something helpful about making choices in the process, instead of after the fact.
great review! very detailed and helpful. thank you for the effort :) would you recommend switching to SSL12 from Focusrite Scarlett 2i4? I've had the latter for 10 years now for my home studio but I got some issues with it: 1. usb input is glitching 2. not possible to listen with 2 headphones 3. modern active humbucker basses are too hot when recording. I don't plan to record the full band with the interface, but I record guitars, piano and synth with it for my tracks, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. again, thank you very much for your effort!
Thanks so much! There are so few reviews of the SSL 12, this was very useful and well presented! (no Sweetwater where I live unfortunatlety ;-) but we have Thomann). Was torn between this and the Motu M4 - but the SSL is more versatile and seems equally easy to use and portable. You haven't mentioned the 32 bit float, I'm guessing you just keep recording at 16/24 bit!
Mounting the XLR connector from the front in the right orientation without turning around the interface will make it a right connection. Hence the design, I believe.
@@malonedrum not bad for the price right !! i sort of wish it had adat in and out so you could easily send line outs from daw to outboard gear and then back in. I have one but am thinking about maybe switching to the audient id44. has 20 ins and 22 outs i believe. an old focusrite saffire pro40 that’s now obsolete with new machines can be used through adat with newer interfaces. really quick cheap way to get a bunch more ins, also those old saffire preamps are not bad at all
I saw you playing bass in another video. As a longtime drummer who is learning bass, I’d be interested in your path to learning bass and guitar. Which did you learn first, what’s been challenging, how it’s helped your drumming, etc. Maybe you could make a video on that!
I don’t really play guitar besides just knowing a few campfire chords, but I love being behind the bass and it’s certainly helped me grow as a drummer and at the same time be easier to learn due to my experience behind the drums. I started mostly just to jam along with my students, and then to hop during the house gig I played where a lot of drummers would come sit in. I’m not great, but enough to be on the sub list for a few churches and other very low things.
Hello Mike! Thank you so much for the review, excellent! I'm looking for similar interface and have pretty much the same requirements as you stated in the video, lol. I have two questions. 1. I heard that the preamps in this interface are quite hot which meant some people found recording drums with very low gain and almost clipping anyways. What is your experience with this please? 2. My second choice would be Steinberg UR44C. It has pretty much all of the things the SSL 12 does but also has DSP inside to have latency-free fx monitoring (EQ, comp, reverb, and some guitar sims). The only drawback of this interface is according to Julian Krause it has noisier preamps (which on SSL 12 are super quiet). Do you have any chance to review this interface? I would highly appreciate that since it would help me choose between the two. Love you videos, keep them coming!
I haven’t had an issue gain staging any instrument to get a nice level without clipping, and no I haven’t had a chance to try any Strindberg interfaces.
awesome review. can you use it as direct monitoring ("stand alone")? I mean it's plugged to mac but mac is power off and you are able to listen what's coming from the inputs? like a analog mixer.
Hey Mike, great video and review. I was wondering if you’re using Ventura or Sonoma. I bought the 2+ and on Sonoma , I get audio output on one channel. Everything worked fine until I updated to 14.5😢
I've never heard it called a crotch mic! 😮 You can't go wrong with ssl. It sounds great. Maybe the xlrs are that way because that's how they're mounted to the board?
@@malonedrum Well, its all about your skills! There are so many reviews out there with crappy sound.. But your review is fun to listen on my studio monitors 🙂

I'm using it - it is second to none! The on-off button is priceless 🙂
Ha, I'm still not very big on needing the on/off button, but I can see where some people may appreciate it.

I love the look of this and the Universal Audio Volt 76 interfaces.

I LOVE my SSL12. As this is coming from Discrete 4 Synergy core. Great video.
Good choice!
Is it that good?
@@Icko_VOT actually yes I was quite surprised. Simple and straight to the point with BIG sound being pushed. Great package and price point.

Best justification I’ve heard, although I still wish it was flipped
the 4K button is an analog circuit in the preamp believe, button just engages and disengages it
That’s impressive

I'm thinking of getting another one. Keep in mind art has a built in talk back mic you can use for an input as a room mic.
I haven’t actually tried to see if I can route the talkback channel on logic, but would love that for the Phil Collins room mic approach.
Can you use those two hi-z inputs for extra mics?
Those hi-z inputs are for channels 1 and 2, which also have their XLR inputs on the back of you choose to use a mic for either of those channels.
@@malonedrum gotcha. Thanks!
I've read the preamps run pretty hot, did you have any issue with clipping when recording very loud sources? Thanks for the review.
No, but I think I may have flipped the -20db pad on my KSM32 so I could crank the gain a little more on the interface.
Hi Mike, your drum mixing sounds amazing!
Do you mind sharing what mics you used for your setup?

Shure SM57 (Snare)
