Brian, I just finished painting my corvette hood and front bumper. I watched so many of your videos about B/C Clearcoat prep. and how to achieve a great result, well it payed off, it came out fantastic. I followed everything you said to do and bought the right spray gun you recommenced off your store. Oh, I did this in my garage and I'm so glad I took the time to leran from you. Thank you so much you're a great teacher in both your professions.
Brian, this is an excellent example of not only how to do auto body/painting work, but more importantly, how to teach others enough to get us jump-started. In your debt - thank you!
Found your channel a couple of years ago when I was researching on how to paint my truck, for my first time painting HVLP I was very pleased with my results thanks to your tips! I still come back to your channel because I enjoy your content and it gives me more information to put in my toolbox whenever I find the next project I can use them on.
Great video! I'm a terrible welder but I can make two pieces of metal stick together. The old saying I abide by is "a grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't!".
A lot of useful information as always Brian, great Job 👍🏽 Love how your son is around you watching you work, I hope he likes what you do and hopefully see him learn from a great teacher.
The best of the bests 👍 You helped me a lot to improve im following you from a country of North Africa and the things that you giving here for free no one will tell them to you here thank you so so so much for helping me to improve just from watching your videos
I have an older mini van that has rust everywhere. Using it as a training vehicle to learn body work on. I like these tips. There’s just so many different kinds of paint filler sanders sand paper etc it’s hard to know where to start. I like that Yukon XL looks like a nice truck that a person like myself could get cheap and eventually have a nice vehicle out of.
Great video! Nice helper you have there! Word of caution on grinding welds. You may get a nice weld with little or no warping and ruin it by leaning too hard on your sanding disc and building too much heat. Go slowly and keep checking how hot the panel is getting. Ask me how I know!!!!
Bump what they say in the comments, this is an older- well loved truck and your body and paint work on it is as good as it gets at home. This is only a street driver no need for show quality! Besides, if you made that panel perfect the rest of it would stand out to much. Looks great from here! Thanks for the tips Brian!
Incredible result but I definitely don’t have the patience to go thru all these steps nor have the wallet to splurge on all these required supplies. But….. my hats off to this guys for having the patience and thorough explanation for each phase of this operation. I couldn’t do it.
The tip about using the Fast Etch is an excellent idea. I've always gone over any weld seams with polyester resin and some cabosil mixture to seal them before epoxy primer. pretty much the same idea as putting the short strand filler. Might be overkill but it was something I learned eons ago and have always done. Nice job, your repair turned out spectacular as always. You're a very knowledgeable and skilled body and paint man
I was one of the "spray can repair" people, then got a used 26 gallon compressor, an Areopro R500 gun and never looked back. Now I get consistent, much better results. Thanks Brian for another cool video 👍
Hi Brian. Great tutorial as always. Folks might not realize what is involved in getting a quality repair. Nice to see your little apprentice. Hope your summer is going well. Enjoy your weekend with your beautiful family.
Great video! I had to replace the hood and a fender on my old Jag due to a deer. The car is beige tan color and my used replacement panels were black, severely burned 30 years old black paint and clear coat. I finally got the panels nice with high build primer, but I had difficulty with the coverage of Dupli-Color paint. In fact, it took me 11 spray cans to get good coverage on the hood and fender. But, I got it and the covered it with 2K Spray-Max clear coat and it looks very good for a DIY job!
@@mikep509 Oh yes, for sure! But, I wanted to try to do it by myself. At 22$ Canadian per Dupli-Color can and 45$ Canadian per 2K clear coat cans, it was expensive. Lots of square foots in this hood!
@@alexandrecouture2462 ... yeah it's pricey with rattle cans.. I'm in canada too, I have borrowed a 16 gallon compressor and picked up a $130 paint sprayer on sale at Canadian tire for $50... Question, would you or did you treat the backside of the panel? It seems if you do nothing to the back all your work will be for nothing when it starts to rust.
Brian, I was doing a PDR glue pull on the roof of my 07 "Kona blue" Mustang, and it pulled the very small dent AND the paint n primer clear down to the metal, in one pull. Its about a 1.5" diameter circle. Ive been following your videos and learning step by step. Can i try and blend the paint, or do i need to redo the whole roof. This will be my 1st time painting, so im still trying to learn by watching your videos, which are extremely educational. Thanks for teaching us.
Another great masterclass in painting and body filler etc. So much fab teaching. I applaud the use of the cut panel from the full piece but yeah the welding could be better. Still, it's not the metalwork than brought me here and the finish looks really great. Many thanks. There's loads for me to implement when I get the steel work of my project vehicle ready for these stages. Thanks!
Brian, one good trick I learned and that works with the 2K clear coat is that after using it, if you freeze the can you can preserve what’s left way longer. My last can lasted over a month and I was able to use the whole can instead of throwing it away, you just gotta let it get back to room temperature before it starts to spray correctly again. Maybe it might with the epoxy primer as well. Try it and see!

I was curious if you would ever access the backside through a drain hole that you could create and then plug and spray corrosion protection on the panel's backside. Excellent DYI.

I've never had any problems taking a finish off metal on any car/truck and applying lacquer primer surfacer to the bare metal. Primer is the adhesion prep (it's not classified as paint) to accept your finish coats. It sands well, exposes warps and issues of metal patches and won't rust at all depending on the length of time and prep work for the final coats of paint.

Great instructional video for professional results. My only concern is the cost of this repair, if I am just a week end warrior and trying to fix my daily driver the cost of all this repair is crazy expensive. Patch panel, welder, PPE for that, and supplies, short strand body filler, Bondo, glaze putty, primers, sand paper, hardener, etc. etc. how many types of primers? etch, high build, epoxy, guide coat .... holy Toledo I might as well pay a body shop to do it IMHO.
2k clear $40 a spray can same with the primer going to a bodyshop jobbers store or site can of oem exact match colour between $20 for a small can and $50 for a large can has for the clear i asked the owner of the paint store i go to what he recommended and he said use the laquer clear for small repairs its a waste of money to spray a small repair with a $40 can of clear . if your doing anything like a door panel then yes use the 2k stuff because its a large panel and youll use the entire can . brian when do you use blender on small repairs before or after clearing .
Well I am also repairing some metal on my truck. You have holes in the welding. You have to fill all those holes to prevent moisture from getting through and making the paint fail. The bondo is not good enough to stop the moisture from getting through.
Off topic question: I love the paint side of the industry but don’t particularly have an interest in the actual body/repair side. Is it possible/reasonable to become successful in paint without knowing body?

Hi brian ive been watching all your videos on painting at home, and was wondering if you recommend single stage paint or base and clear coat for a car thats going to be parked outside? Looking to repaint my 08’ civic si with peeling clear coat.
The picture you have of the paint can I thought was one of those foam cans which made me think of this car story I read anyway this guy had a Suburban Minnesota it was a rust bucket and he kept together by using the spray foam in the doors and other parts he just used it in hunting season and some other things so whenever you had a small job that required him to use a can of expanding foam he just used the last of it to Hold the truck together

Bro, that finish is TIGHT! I wanted to do some work to my Cateye chevy, Rocker panels...Are all those two part sprays; One and dones? once it's mixed use it or lose it?... I use pre-cat epoxy paint in residential trim etc, but; you can reuse it once it's open...
Love how your Son wanted to help.
The best part!
Great video for this beginner old man. LOL Thanks for the in-depth tutorial.
What was your total time for this small space? Thanks.
On working on those lower panels jacking up the vehicle helps
I love this video. Great outcome. I have one question, what do you do with the back of the welds? Isn't it exposed to the elements? Would it rust again from the back? Thanks in advance.
Watch the end of the video please
Great job! Thanks for the video.
Damn came out nice. I do some drive way body repairs my self but im not as good as this video was
Hi brian ive been watching all your videos on painting at home, and was wondering if you recommend single stage paint or base and clear coat for a car thats going to be parked outside? Looking to repaint my 08’ civic si with peeling clear coat.
Only thing I can say is you should be using a longer block. But as long as it looks straight in the end I guess it doesn't matter
New sub here hello from Australia, Great advice and work indeed.
Hi Brian great work on all this 🤩😮
Great video, I wish you could work on my wife's minivan.
I have 2014 F150 with steel body color painted bumper. The bumper has some surface rustvabout the size of your palm near the front wheel well. The paint is white platinum pearl paint. Can i use this method (other than welding patch panel) to repair the bumper and make it look good?
Good video Brian!
I want to see more videos of you just painting cars explaining what color it is or variant (like a darker or greener tint) with steps than seeing more tutorials for beginners
Not a criticism…. Your work looks very good…. Your choices of materials is a real eye opener…
Any replacement panels for the lip above the rear wheel thanks
