Good lord that dance is SO EPIC!!! I could watch it on repeat for HOURS! I remember they did it in a GAP commercial I nearly DIED! It's so genius!!!
One of my favorite of all musicals
I love that she had a vocal stop at the end... it showed it was live. Love live theater.
This is really a great version of this scene! It's one of my favorite parts of the musical...
i still love the dance from the movie version. the music sounds so much better. i haven't heard any orchestra perform it like it was done in the movie. it just sounds so good. the dancing looks so good, too. tony looks so much cuter in this version, though! ;)
They did that!
love love love this show!!!!! love karen olivo...totally deserved this tony!!
Muy bueno, ritmo, velocidad y perfección,, simplemente extraordinario.
one of the best moments in all of theatre
Agreed. Actors are humans. Human voices occasionally crack. PLUS, that is part of the magic of live theater. Anything can happen -- and often does. She was terrific in the show. LOVED the whole thing. Thrilling theater.
My favorite scene (Besides Somewhere) has to be the "Dance at the Gym."
I just... love this.
I saw the show in 2009. The DATG was one of the best numbers in a great production.
LOVE THISSSSS!
Jets win but I'm a true Shark at heart. ♥ West Side Story
That's amazing
I loved the original and all the copies, once a fan, always a fan!
Copies 🙄
wish I could have seen this production. long time fan of the film. have never had the chance to see a professional stage production of WSS.
she was great.
......WHO IS THAT WOMEN IN THE RED....SHE'S A MENTAL DANCER!!!
I knew it was going to be amazing when Lin came on my computer screen :P
Nothing like a 1950's dance off to show who really owns the floor :)
Seriously though, it's a fantastic effort from everyone.
@shoSHNAZZYdood My school is putting it on in June and i am so honored to be playing the role of Anita!!
Good luck with your performance!
Mambo, Cha Cha, Meeting Scene - Tony Awards
This is the original Jerome Robbins choreography. Joey McKneely went through and painstakingly examined the '61 movie, '80 b-way revival, "Jerome Robbin's Broadway," The New York City Ballet version and the choreographic manual from the OBC to recreated the most accurate version of the original choreography. Your opinion is wrong.
Me: meh, I could do that with practice (looks at their feet)
IN HEELS OH HELL NO
Lin looks so young holy shit
GEORGE AKRAM IS FAR THE BEST DANCER, HE IS A GOOD FRIEND, MACTOR AND DANCER, I'VE KNOWN HIM SINCE 13 YEARS AGO! I'M VERY PROUD TO BE HIS FRIEND
@iamsteelee24 I agree. I have not seen the actual production, but maybe they were speeding up the tempo in the interest of time for the Tony Awards. It certainly was a lot faster than in the movie.
Meeting scene p
Cha Cha
@chicagoman58 you may be right, but if you look at the speed of the dancing, you can tell they have rehearsed it in the faster tempo. Yeah, I definitely think the impact of certain parts of the mambo is lessened by the upped tempo. However, I give props to the performers for their speed and accuracy! They did well!!!
It was even faster in the 80s revival
The dancers are gorgeous, but everything is so energetic and punchy that certain movements featured in the original film that are so subtle and powerful are virtually gone. Energy should be played with.
One thing I do not like is the tempo. There are certain parts in the mambo where the tempo is too fast. In the movie, there is a greater effect when the Puerto Ricans present themselves in a line and shout "Mambo" when the tempo is a bit slower. It just sounds like screeching horns and a mess when the tempo is up like it is here. . .just my thoughts. . .anyone else understand what I'm sayin' ? ? ?
I love the mambo even though i play maria in my school production of. Maria's pure shite like that
I like my schools version of the dance at the gym better but this is good too
@lemaxmas
I saw this one, but with the understudy for Anita, and the replacement for Tony and Riff. I could not believe that they were not the originals.
And Jerome Robbins created the choreography based on the way that teenagers moved naturally (slouch) and dance moves that were done by actual inner-city teenagers that he observed while at a school dance to research. (I wrote a massive term paper on this)
He didn’t choreograph the Sharks though :p
what's the name of the presenter tho
holy fuck that was a high C..
Was this videod in 1961 ?
@westsidestory97
Yes. But Lin Manuel Miranda didn't just write it, he was also the original Usnavi...
back then when Lin Manuel Miranda ain't that popular lol
He was still popular...
Gail Noel yep ik but not everyone (including non theatre peeps) knew him haha
We love him nonetheless
This is really good but the thing that is Rita Moreno was so perfect in her Dance moves every time I see a remake it's abit disappointing.
I feel the same about George everytime someone else plays Bernardo.
Mambo p
@AOG93 lol they don't know true broadway haha
Josefina Scaglione never convinced as María. It was kinda sad.
That's the problem when you hire a singer when you should hire an actress.
Gorgeous dancers, though subtelty of original movements is gone. Energy should be played with.
Che soy argentino, pero como rompen las bolas diciendo por todos lados etsa es argentina , sino es esta es elena roger ... dejen de romper las bolass...
but ours wasnt this choreography... my dance teacher choreographed.....and im not saying that i dont like this
