As a new resident of the SE (Atlanta), I'm hoping to get out to explore/hike/photograph/video some of the Parks, Waterfalls, Wildlife, Mountains, Canyons, Beaches ... and all things along the way to said destinations. Okay - now that I read this - it is more like a Spring-Summer-Fall plan, right? Any day in the great outdoors with photography/videography gear and some inspiration is a great day. Looking forward to viewing the results of your Great Smoky Mountains National Park trip! Cheers and safe travels.
Went up to the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota to photograph waterfalls. We had rain, fog and snow and even some waves on Lake Superior. More than 2 feet of snow in the woods near the Canadian Border.
Those that criticize your appearance need only to look in the mirror. This is a photography channel not a fashion channel right? Keep up the good work!
I love how you said a 6 hour drive is 'short'. I live in the UK and that would take you from one side of the country to the other 😅. Love your van btw!
For me landscape photography is so much more than the image. I truly wish I had found it earlier but the gratitude I feel for being out in nature is priceless. Every season has its magic. Heading to the highlands of Scotland, hopefully before midge season!!

I live about 15 minutes from where you guys are staying. Sadly I did not have the extra funds to attend. I frequent the park alot and some of the more rocky trails may have you wishing for boots. Have fun!
I enjoyed you video as always. I have the exact same model low boots as you. They are the best low model I have owned. All others I have gotten wet feet from walking in dew just after a few uses, regardless of a “waterproof liner.” Mine are now totally shot, sole is loose, fabric worn through where it flexes, shrank about a full size as well. While they are the best ones I have owned, I am not sure if they and all low boots are junk or, perhaps I have used them much longer than I realized. I have mid-sized Solomons which do not weigh all that much more and they are holding up better.
I only shoot wildlife. I could care less about the medium format gear and honestly, almost nothing in this video pertains to me specifically. But, your videos are just so well done. Thanks for the content, Mark!

Enjoy the trip. Something that never seems to get mentioned is Insurance cover. I wonder how many photographers have cover or is it considered an unnecessary expense. Do you only insure the new gear & maybe take a hit on older stuff. Might even be worth a video guide when you have time.
Currently working on macro shots of my lilac bush, waiting for it to get a smidge warmer to begin my walks at our local conservation area that has a ton of wildlife to photograph, and have an ongoing project of different locations in the Kansas City area that I’m trying to get a shot of all 4 seasons to put together on one photograph.

Mark, Thank you for another informative video. You didn’t mention tripods or ball heads. My question is when you need to fly to your destination do you bring 4-Series tripod or just limit it to the 2-Series? If you bring the 4-Series, do you detach the ball head and put the tripod in your checked bag or just strap the tripod to the side of your Tilopia backpack and carry it on the flight?
What abot your tripod and tripod head? I would love to know about that without having to go through ALL of your videos to find the discussion. What brand is it? Looks like the only intuitive one I've ever seen.
Great video Mark! I'm curious as to why you'd choose the xt4 setup over the gfx100 setup for telephoto shots. With the xt4 you've got a ~300mm FF equivalent on a 26mp sensor instead of the gfx100 which gives you a ~150mm FF equivalent on a 100mp sensor. If you cropped in the gfx100 image x2 you'd have an equivalent focal length and still have a ~50mp image. Is the sharpness on the Fuji GF 100-200 that bad that it doesn't hold up when cropping?
Spring plans? I'm going to start getting into bird photography. Practicing in my back yard and will soon visit a local bird sanctuary, although I'm a bit late on the migratory season, but it should still be fun. Didn't hear you mention a tripod, just wondering why. Also, caught a quick glimpse of the Aspen ball head (Colorado Tripod Co). I've been waiting on mine for 6 months and there's no word of when it will ship (sigh). Anyway, have a great time !!
Had the Aspen pre-ordered over a year ago and after 3 months with a trip coming up and they could not even give an approximate ship date I got a refund and went with a really right stuff ball head. Really wanted to give the Aspen a go but just could wait indefinitely without even a hint of a ship date.

You get a license if you will as a rec flyer thru FAA- simple and straight forward takes perhaps 20-25 minutes to complete it online. For commercial purposes it is more involved.
Any drone use that becomes “in furtherance of a business” requires a Part 107 certificate from the FAA. Even if you were to take photos and give them to a friend who is a realtor (for example)!and then that person uses it to sell a house, that becomes “in furtherance of a business” and you need a Part 107 certificate. Mark would definitely require a “license” under Title 14, Part 107. Just trying to keep him out of trouble with the FAA. He is, after all, a visible public figure.
With your hiking shoes, do they loosen up as you hike? I had a pair of shoes with that "draw string" style instead of laces and they were always loose. Maybe user error...
You seriously got flack about your look? How out of place do you have to be to only think about appearance over the content of a video? It’s not like you had BBQ and filmed without washing up 😂 I didn’t notice anything. Last week was a great video and I absolutely appreciate videos like this one.

Backpacking through east fork of virgin river outside zion, and a couple trips out into the escalante area of southern Utah.
I plan to shot as much as I can in my area and the Smokies. I'm ready for the flowers to be on top at Clingmans Dome. Great video as always!

I have the same headlamp, best I've owned for sure. The red lamp is very useful for night photography, especially when there's bugs out.
