Wonderful images! I prefer sunrise to sunset for these reason: 1-the rest of the human world is in bed, less noise. 2-birds are more active, singing during morning. Even when fully involved in photography, my listening for bird song never stops. 3- usually less wind during morning. 4-I am not sure if I can accurately pinpoint this. Color seems better during morning…less pollution, but I may be imaging that. 5-blue hour light is more colorful during morning, at least to my eyes. Going from dark to light may make seeing the colors better than reverse. But again, am I imaging this?

I tend to be defeatist in the morning. It isn't that I don't want to get up and go find outstanding morning light and potentially fog. It is that I have often been disappointed that I haven't found "the shot" and ruined what would have been a good walk/hike trying to make it happen. Afternoon and going toward evening, I feel as if I have more hope. I can see what is happening with the clouds and the potential for great light. Then I get to decide what time I want to invest in photographing a landscape, or if I want to concentrate on shooting other things. You talked about scouting. There are times that is not possible if "the shot" needs to be at sunrise and you can only be there for one morning. I think of a trip a few years back to Maroon Bells. I could only be there for the morning. It was the only chance I had at mild conditions during the winter. What I had hoped for didn't happen. The trip wasn't a total waste. Some of my favorite black and white photos came from that trip. There was just no way to appropriately scout it myself to plan what I wanted to shoot in morning conditions.

Those headless chicken moments are stressful Michael, and not always suitable for landscape photography.
The foggy conditions can add a calming effect to the image, however this does not automatically apply to the photographer. Thanks again for sharing this amazing location Michael.

I spent a 40 year career getting up early so I could sleep in sometimes in retirement. But no, I had to take up photography and get serious about it. It's a struggle, to be honest, to get up as early as I need to for morning images. When I do, it's totally worth it. Plus I don't end up guilt-tripping over getting up late, or not at all. Doesn't mean I like it, though.

I really liked the way you worked your compositions. Excellent advice. My favorite 2 photos were the the tree with the branch on the right that grabs the viewer as well as frames a distant tree, and the one that has a u-shaped branch that frames a distant tree at 10:00 into video. Great video! Thanks.

8:24 in a way, i prefer it without fog, but in a way, I prefer it with the fog because it makes the trees stand away from each other, and it looks like that the tree does not look like that they are next to each other

Nice to revisit Madeira through your photos. Funny how your images are completely different from mine, although I recognized several trees I also photographed there. Unfortunately on my first visit (for scouting purposes) to Fenal forest I had the best conditions (fog), but when I returned everything was just harsh blue sky. With hundreds of people walking around. Looking back, I should have taken more time to get familiar with the surroundings.

No way. That isn't Sneezy is it? The shot of the leaning trees got my attention. Someting about the foreground leaning tree got my attention(I know, I said that). But the other leaning trees just mad it all come together. If I didn't know better, I'd say you had those trees positioned there. Or, you did some good research composition wise. OK, Not going over board that you might not have ever been here before. But getting out does improve your chances of getting nice or great shots. Get out all you can.
