What it is James. I don't get too many Isle of Mann updates here in Texas (just London and Dr Campbell in the north country) but I here things are going to break out over there soon. Looking forward to enjoying your eye without the the psychological drain we've all had.
Great James, so nice to see you back vlogging. Myself like you are saving up for the Nikkor Z 100-400mm and yes wow what a price it is. I was going to plump for the Kase magnetic system but spotted an article on the Nisi V7 filter system in outdoor photography magazine. It has a clever mechanism for rotating the cpl
Great as always. I do use the Kase in just 82mm, I can see no vignetting with the Z14-30, only if I do use two stacked filters. I love my geared head as well, but I prefer the Leofoto, The benro is cheaper and also has a geared panorma -axis, but benro doesnt have the camera centered over the middle, so no real use for panos.
Anxious to hear about the 24-120 lens. I have it on order and want to see how it compares optics wise to the 24-70 f4. Obviously the focal length is much better but not sure about the IQ. Let us know, thanks.
There is no real noticeable difference in image performance between the lenses. The mtf charts suggest the 24-70 is better but honestly in real world use I can’t see it. For me the 24-120 is the better lens (and this is coming from a fan of the 24-70)
I think our kits are about 95% the same! For the 100-400 I have been using my F-mount Sigma with FTZ. Would love to replace it with the Z mount but man that lens is expensive, and I don't use the 100-400 that often. The new 24-120 covers most situations for me. Cheers!
Great video! As a Z shooter I unfortunately find myself with the same dilemma regarding the telephoto options. We need sigma to release their 100-400 or Nikon to release at least 70-300. The 14-30, 24-70 and 24-120 are all great options for landscape. Btw did you consider getting the 24-200 instead of the 24-120? Optically not as good but gives you more reach.
Thanks! I did consider the 24-200 but for me it’s too much of an optical compromise on the high resolution Z7. Superzooms have their place but I think the 24-120 looks like a better option for my photography style 👍
I'm waiting for one of these lenses too. I can't justify the Nikon 100-400 but a Nikon copy of the Sigma 100-400 for Sony would be nice. The 70-300 AF-P Nikon lens looks good but with the adaptor it sticks out a fair way so I'd be worried about vibrations with that one. If Nikon do make a native Z mount 70-300 it would be nice if they included a mount for a tripod collar even as an optional extra.
I did own it but I’ve sold it. I would have liked to keep it but money is tight for me. So I’m just going to use the 14-30 and 24-120 as my two lens solution. Long term I’ll get the 100-400 👍
Credible take on the theme, James! Segments showing items in use, a plus - even the squeeky bag. Am tempted to say this was a “grass roots” episode - you look so comfortable in that venue, like you were in the nest of some prehistoric bird😁. Rollei name sounds like the old Rolleiflex line of twin lens reflex cameras - guess someone bought the name rights. Don’t see lens warmers in many “my bag” posts. Don’t recall you mentioning asthma issues before. Do the cats make things worse (aside from nipping at leather cases)? Was it Monty or Misty that was drawn to the cases? Hope all is well in IOM. Cheers!
It’s only 300g heavier than the 70-200 f4 with ftz that I used to use. I’ll be prepared to carry that for awesome range it provides. It really looks like a wonderful bit of kit 👌
I want that 14-30mm so bad. But even used they are about $1000. As an enthusiast that's just a hard pill to take. I'm eyeing a used Tamron 17-35 for $450! Might be wide lens!
When you compare the image quality from your Z mounts to your old f-mounts (the D750 & D850), do you notice any significant differences? In other words, if your D850 hadn’t drowned, would you have still upgraded to the Z system?
The D850 is still king, remember James gave it a smack on the head the first time out, drowning was a second thought. The Z series worries me, sensor exposed, dust bunnies.
I’d probably still be using the d850 to be honest. It’s an awesome camera! That being said the z Mount lenses are way better than the f Mount equivalents in pretty much every case I’ve encountered and I think that is now the most compelling argument for moving to the z Mount. For example the 14-30 f4 s is a sharper lens than the 14-24 2.8 f Mount!
Thanks for a great vid! Out of the Z6ii or Z7 mk1 which do you feel is best suited for a (very!) amateur landscape photographer? (Max occasional print size 24” x 16”)
Worth remembering the greatest landscape photographer after Ansell Adams. Galen Rowell had two lenses on an Nikon FM2. A 24mm f1.4 and a 75-150 f3.5. Thats it.
If you want a better grip for your nikon z6-7 get the official nikon z-gr1 its only for sale i japan but what a deference it makes , plus the Official NIKON "Z" Vertical Bracket Z-VP1
You mention that on your 14-30mm f4 lens the 95mm Kase filters don't vignette "beyond 16mm". I'm not sure if this means that 14mm to 16mm will or won't vignette. Can you clarify please.
The z 20 prime is supposed to be a very good landscape lens. The 14-30 f4 gives you some focus movement but against a good prime? Camera bags are way too overpriced and the only extra they have is some cheap padding between the camera and lens. That's my penny's worth.
I've more or less moved over to mf3 from Nikon ff and apsc. I had AS diagnosed since my mid 20's, I'm now 63 and my Lumix GX9 and GX7 is much lighter and less awkward for what I do. I bought the GX7 when I retired for travel but it got damaged and repaired. I was then tempted by the GX9 and the former is now used as backup I'm tempted by the new OM1 (yes GAS) but not the extra cost for the Video Bells and Whistles, I don't do Video. I will have make a decision about selling my D800 and D7200 which is a brilliant camera even still but awkward enough Finally I'm not inclined to go for the Z cameras. The lenses are too expensive and I don't see the point of using heavier F lenses with an adapter on small bodies
James that location to me looks like the dunes at Dunstanburgh and if it is and you parked your van at Dunstan steads on Sat 5th feb, you parked next to me. My day was ruined by the dog walkers trampling all over a perfectly footprint free beach just before the light came good
Keep your giotto blower in a freezer bag, your blower ball is breathing every time you move your bag, sucking in crap. Keep it clean, put it in a plastic bag.
Yeah! Shimoda! Fantastic bag. I'm impressed with how much I can fit in mine.

Great stuff James. Always find your videos to be informative and enjoyable to watch, although you have confirmed I have too much gear!
Thanks James. Very useful.
Maybe consider a Rokinon or other 2nd party manual lens when it comes to wide angle primes as you rarely use the autofocus anyways.

Love the benro geared head I got that after seeing your video with it a year or so back cheers 🍻
Love my Z7, absolutely gorgeous for landscapes etc. a keeper for sure, ditto 14-30mm
Another very put video!

Fantastic gear review. Sounds like a good set up for me if and when I go Z.
Im gonna have to try those filters i still use my gobe screw in filters, pain in the arse they are at times 😆

There is also an 800mm Fresnel lens due in the pipeline for under a grand. Should be quite something that as it's promised to be lightweight.

James I kept my 70-200 f4 F lens from my DSLR days, it is a great lens and works well with the FTZ - I thought you also had this lens?
Can see it in his bag with a ftz attached at 10.02.
I also have this lens and it works great adapted to the z5..
I did own it but I’ve sold it. I would have liked to keep it but money is tight for me. So I’m just going to use the 14-30 and 24-120 as my two lens solution. Long term I’ll get the 100-400 👍
There is a third option if one were to purchase the 70-200mm 2.8 Z then get a 1.4x converter that gives a lot of options

welcome back hehe
I just got the Z 100-400 lens and it is a monster at over 3 lbs. Not sure if you will want to carry it in that small pack!

@@JamesBrewphoto so far it is a wonderful lens!
Have you been chasing the AB? I have but not seen it recently. I love my 410 junior geared head. great video. 2x👍
Thanks! I’ve not shot it since November. It has been very active lately which is promising as solar cycle isn’t even close to its max yet
@@JamesBrewphoto Yes its going to get hotter, I hope
nice gear man! i'm nikon shooter to and i use 14-24 z, 24-70 f4 and 70-300, but i want change 24-70 and 70-300 to 24-200.
I’d recommend the 24-120

Thanks John. Riser, I am not sure I know what you mean?

Its all about GAS. Gear Aquisition Syndrome. Much like everyone wants the newest iphone.

Not too much really. I’d estimate around 6-7kg ish on average 👍

It means vignetting happens beyond 16mm particularly if stacking filters 👍
