  • From self-isolation in my back garden I bring you a complete run through of all my landscape photography gear - a 'What's in my bag 2020' video! I last did one of these videos over two years ago in my RUclips infancy, so my setup has changed quite significantly over that time plus I have had a major Ebay clearout of underused gear lately. Hopefully this video should be interesting and give some insights into my equipment. Thanks for watching and if you have not yet subscribed please smash that button for future videos from me. Save Lives - Stay at Home! Take care everyone - more relevant than ever before! 🙏

    James I shoot an 850 backed up by a 750 and if truth be told, for "knocking around" photography (grandkids, kids, grandkids sports, odd street work) I prefer the 750. Light, fast operating, quality image (sensor/processor),it's just a nice experience. I love the 850 and what it does, but if I need to replace it, it would be with a 780.

    • @JamesBrewphoto
      @JamesBrewphoto  4 года назад

      Interesting insights. I've shot with both extensively - the D850 is hands down the better camera technically but I totally get where you're coming from. The d750 is one of the best cameras ever made IMO for when it was made and what it offers

    • @jamesoliver6625
      @jamesoliver6625 4 года назад

      @@JamesBrewphoto I agree. When I'm shooting (or trying to shoot) "portfolio" images, from my experience in the printing trades I go for maximum resolution, therefore the 850. But I'm not a big guy and I tend to shoot older AF-d lenses. I have my 80-200 f2.8 on my 850 right now and it's like a small howitzer and about as heavy. It also does a beautiful job. But when I go t a family function with kids and grandkids, it's 750 with the 35-105 AF-d all the way. There's an asian guy who put up a video comparing directly in a way that gives good data the 750 to the 780. I wouldn't trade "up" just to trade, but when the time comes, it would be the smart move.

    Buy a backpack (not a camera bag).And stick in a small camera insert to protect your gear..Companies like "F-Stop" or Tenba make them. There are loads. Much more comfortable. And you then have room for food, drinks, waterproofs etc. Get a bag like a Mammut Trion.Has openings front and back. Brilliant solution and extremely comfortable.

I have very very expensive laptops ,ranging from 3 and up, and Samsonite will be the only,only,and only bag brand I will ever trust. Excellent and balanced post, James! Interspersed footage and images a real plus, a cut above the typical “my bag” YT vid. Brewism “sinky” too😁. You clearly put as much thought and care into your kit as you do in your compositions. Good that your lens choice takes in non-Nikon stuff. If weight continues to be an issue, perhaps now is a good time to switch to lighter format/mirrorless camera system.
    Expected landscape kit something like “In this comparment: leading lines. Over here, foreground/background. In bottle there’s neutral density slow moving water. And in pouch a bit of lichen to add interest... “😂.
    Do you have “adopt a road” program in Isle of Man? I USA if you litter patrol a road segment, you can get your name posted on a sign as the road “adopter.” (no kidding.)
    Cabin fever plus scarcity of new gear to review appears to be stressing out photo YT channels - they start posting “bag” stuff, “do at home tips”, “my workflow/edits” and countless Q&A livestreams; scrounging for new content. “Artsy/fartsy” not so bad after all. Hang in there, James.

    • @JamesBrewphoto
      @JamesBrewphoto  4 года назад +1

      Cheers Paul. Yes I will be switching to a mirrorless system for sure. Going to wait for the virus situation to improve first before doing this as the switch is likely to be costly and finances are a little stretched currently. I'm a lifelong Nikon shooter but for the first time I am potentially looking at other systems. If I am going to change I will also switch lenses to native mirrorless lenses - so this presents a unique opportunity in many ways. I want to stay full frame and want camera systems with new improved wider mounts - so for me its Nikon V Canon. Currently Nikon have the better mirrorless bodies whilst Canon have the better mirrorless lenses although with the upcoming Canon R5 & R6 Canon may soon be better in both aspects. Interesting times! Watch this space 👍

    I agree with the Lowepro flip side. Have the aw 500 and aw 400. I don't see anything short term abut a d750 for landscapes man! Keep the L bracket. Look up the wooden handle you can get for the Pentax 6x7 film camera. That L bracket looks like it would do the same thing. Good for hand holding?

    Hi James. Thanks for this video. To keep our (spouse) sanity we do daily some walking around the block keeping at least 6 feet apart from each others. I feel a bit bad about myself, having such a great camera that is like new after 5 years and jumping lately to a new X-T2+XF18-55 OIS; XF 14 F2.8; XF 50-140 F2.8 OIS, thinking they would be the perfect kit for walking around and doing landscape. I bought a new bag and after walking less than an hour, started to feel the weight on my shoulders and my back. When I returned home I weighted the Fuji kit with all three lenses and found it was over 8.3 pounds, without carrying a tripod & ball head. For the D750 I bought years ago a Tamron 15-30 F2.8 VC, (heavy lens) fantastic lens with exceptional resistance to flare, that I use last summer for a wedding D800 + Nikon SB900 + Joe Mcnally Lastolite speed-lite 2 with great results, but I came back exhausted after being shooting there only a few hours. Last year I bought a second hand D800 with only 31K shots, and I like it a lot particularly for cropping. I think I will stop buying camera bodies and buy only great lenses. The Fuji APS-C lenses are great but quite expensives. The best Nikon value is the 50 F1.8 G lens, it is cheap lighyweight and absolutely great in resolution and contrast at almost any apertures.
    Its seems difficult to have a lightweight travelling kit that is also of high resolution. Maybe the solution is to shoot with another photographer and share lenses distributing the total weight of the lenses.
    James I love your work... to all keep hope we should survive to this pandemia... I survive in in december and january.1998 in canada at 27 days without electricity

    Has the insurance company still not paid out yet, James?. I find that circular filters will stick because of too much squeezing pressure. Try pushing down and turning at the same time.

    • @JamesBrewphoto
      @JamesBrewphoto  4 года назад +1

      Yes they have paid out now thankfully. I am holding back from making any gear changes though given the current virus situation etc. I've tried every trick in the book with the filters, the lee circular polariser (the old type) is just poorly designed with its tiny gripping surface. I'll be switching to something different at some point in the future no doubt 👍

    Hope you’re managing to stay sane James, in these difficult times. Like you, I was surprised at the amount of traffic going past. Have you considered the Nikon 24-120mm lens? Weighs in at 710g, so not heavy and a very versatile range. Not considered particularly sharp by many, but I’m quite happy with mine on the D850, even Adam Gibbs, who I admire, uses one.
