If you want to watch a good, old school, adventure movie that you’d probably enjoy, check out “Romancing the Stone”. The movie won a golden globe for best picture, staring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito. You’ll probably love it!! 😁

Romancing the Stone was basically a rip-off of Indiana Jones but for a rip-off it was really good and had a great cast. IMHO it doesn't reach the benchmark that Raiders of the Lost Ark set 3 years before it (I don't think I've seen a single action-adventure movie that has).

The big warehouse at the end is a matte painting by Michael Pangrazio. It's massive, painted on glass with the small area clear where the guy pushing the crated-up Ark was composted in. It remains on screen for a long time, which is unusual for a matte painting since the longer you look the more they seem fake. Pangrazio is that good. I had a large poster of it as a kid. It's a little sloppy up close, but it gains in quality if you step back. Too much detail would look fake he said. It took him three months to paint. His matte paintings for Return of the Jedi are insane.

When Indy says, "what truck?" I was like, "Jesus, this guy is determined" and then when he comes charging out on that horse I was like, "Well this shit just kicked into 5th gear" and during the entire chase scene I was like, "This is unbelievable!"
    What a ride!

Listen out for the "Wilhelm Scream". You can hear it in your video at 19:12 as that German fella gets thrown out of the back of the truck and onto the bonnet of that car behind. Aaaaargh he goes.
That same scream has featured in dozens of movies... at least five of them starring Harrison Ford. The first movie it was in was made in 1951. In some of those 50s movies the same scream was played multiple times. It is a good scream, to be fair. It was played in 'Die Hard - with a vengeance', 'The Fifth Element', 'Planet of the Apes (2001)', 'The Lord of the Rings (Two Towers)', 'The Pirates of the Caribbean', and many many more.

There was a TV show called Warehouse 13 that was in part inspired by the ending scene where the Ark was boxed up and stored in a vast warehouse. The show aired from 2009 to 2014 and was part Sci Fi and part paranormal, and followed a group of archivists who had to recover all these ancient powerful artifacts and securely store them in the warehouse. There's been a lot of people "explaining" over the years how Indy survived hanging onto the sub for that distance, but the honest truth is probably the fact that most diesel subs of the era spent very little time entirely underwater, usually they had at least the tower above the surface for exhaust and air intake. Usually they were at surface level unless they spotted something to shoot at.

This is some real trivia: Spielberg wanted to make a Bond film, out of curiosity, but Cubby R. Broccoli (famous for producing the spy franchise) turned him down. Whereas George Lucas, without an inch of sarcasm, said "Ive got something better than Bond". And thus came this 1981 film and it spawned 4 sequels through the years. But the 5th instalment, well, that remains to be judged individually.

The third Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, remains my favorite.
This film is one that still sounds weird to me with the "Indiana Jones" prefix. When I watched it, it was still just called Raiders of the Lost Ark. But then, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was still being marketed only as Star Wars, so there is that. I think both got their extra bits to their marketing titles around the same time (though Star Wars had long before appended both Episode IV and A New Hope in the title crawl). It makes sense they'd do it, but it just doesn't seem right when people say it as such, to my mind. At least they didn't edit the title as it appears on screen, though, which is nice.

If Back to the Future is the funnest movie ever, this is a very, very close second. It's yet another one I like to watch at least once a year. One of my favourite movie scenes of all time is the map room, Williams's music is SO iconic in that scene, and only adds to its incredible sense of wonder. The sequels are a mixed bag. I personally absolutely love it, but Temple of Doom is simultaneously extremely dark and extremely cheesy. Definitely worth a look. Last Crusade I find quite pedestrian compared to the first two, and that latest one is just trash. Oh, and by the way, since you love Harrison F, and for something COMPLETELY different, do both Blade Runners, if you haven't already....

(something I never did with any of the other ones). And I too am hoping that #5 will blow our socks off. Harrison Ford will be nearly 80 when it comes out!
      * You can probably guess some of these scenes...

Indy 2 (Temple of Doom) was okay but is, for me, the weakest of the first three Indy movies. Crystal skull shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the original trilogy... IMHO. It was silly, implausible and Shia LeBouf didn't do the movie any favors. :/

A couple of improvised scenes in this:
    - When Indy is up against the all-black sword fighter and pulls out his gun and shoots the guy, that was devised because Harrison had dysentery and couldn't do the full rehearsed sword vs whip fight. Someone came up with the gun killing the guy as a quick-to-shoot alternative which audiences LOVED.
    - When the snake falls on Marion's neck in the well of the souls, that was Steven Spielberg's idea (he didn't tell her ahead of time and her glare back at him is real)
    - When Indy says to Marion on the ship, "It's not the age, it's the mileage", that was Harrison's idea.
Also, when Indy and Sullah are getting the Ark, if you look at one of the pillars with the hieroglyphics (I think it's the one on the left in the scene) you can see R2-D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars. Difficult to see unless you have a really good copy (damn near impossible on the original VHS).

Characters like The Phantom, Flash Gordon, The Shadow, John Carter and Tarzan were foundational in creating the pulp action/adventure genre.

Jen!!! I was thinking about you today because I was watching a movie and had the same reaction you had to Harrison Ford. I love your unfiltered honesty in sighing and commenting on how handsome he is. Some PC people just will NOT admit any attraction to anyone because, well, they're PC. I was watching a Hallmark movie with an actress I think is drop-dead beautiful, so much so that I found myself doing what you did, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe how gorgeous she is," sighing and everything. Funny thing is she's one of the second-bananas who always gets cast as the best friend of the protagonist. Her name is Amy Groening. I pretty much have trouble following the story when she's on the screen. So when I was teasing you about running some of the movie on "loop," I was actually relating to myself. Can't wait for your next one. Later, Gator!!! :)

    1. While filming in Tunisia most of the cast got food poisoning and Ford actually got diarrhea from it. and was very ill. The scene where he shoots the guy
was supposed to be another long fight scene but Ford was feeling so bad and it was terribly hot so he basically said, "The hell with this" and just shot the guy.🤣
    2. Karen Allen played Boone's squeeze in "Animal House" HINT HINT
    3. If you don't like spiders you're going to love the next one. It's not the best of the bunch but it's adventurous. Billy is a pain in the ass though.
    4. Two overlooked Harrison Ford movies worth a first time/share are: "Witness" and "Force 10 From Navarone"
    5. The sand in the ark is the stone tablets turned to sand over time.
    6. The ride at Disneyland is pretty cool. Make sure it's one of your first to get it out of the way before the line gets too long. Adventureland.

Hey now, spiders are my people, don't hate... all of them (except the ones that bite you in your sleep, screw those guys)
As for the other Indy movies, my two cents:
Temple of Doom is kind of fun but nowhere near as good. And somewhat...problematic, in terms of bad cultural stereotypes (or at least resembling old movies with bad stereotypes....)
The Last Crusade is a nicely composed character-defining screenplay, mixed with a similar feel of the first one.
The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is like if someone wrote a script for an animated Indiana Jones movie but decided to shoot it in live action instead. It's so cartoony at times it's almost a parody of itself. It has some fun references to earlier episodes though.

I saw this film when it first came out and it knocked my socks off. Action films pre Indiana Jones were slow compared to this film whereas this film was non stop action. Also, the women weren't as physically tough as Marion. Mostly woman in older action films were expected to stand around and look pretty as the hero did all of the fighting. Watch the original King Kong. Fay Ray does nothing but screem as Bruce Cabot and Kong does all of the work of rescuing her. Or watch Alfred Hitchcock's the Bird. In that movie the birds attack the house and poor Rod Taylor alone defends three screeming, passive women. But,not Marion. She isn't helpless. Not her. I understand that the original choice for the role of Indiana Jones was Tom Selleck. He couldn't do the role because the shooting of the film conflicted with the schedule of his t.v. show, Magnum. Even though Selleck would have been good as Indiana Jones(He has played characters like Indy since) it is still hard seeing anyone else in the role other than Harrison Ford.
