Reason for the set-up of the video, with the snowman, is that it was a filmed segment to be included in the tv special "Snowtime Special: Abba In Switzerland" filmed in Lausanne, Switzerland & shown on tv December 1979

Derek, you are so much fun to watch. Only stumbled upon you recently reacting to ABBA songs and love how excited you get with each video. Hope you've found their recently released VOYAGE album, their first in 40 years. They still have it!. I googled you and learned you're right here in San Diego. Not sure when you last posted but hope you're still at it.
The title Chiquitita references to how the song persona must rise from her depression and personal struggles and once again channels the repressed 'little girl' within her so she can once again face and experience love and life with the exciting possibility of wonder and expectations of greater and better things to come, instead of being jaded.
Hey Dereck, I have to say, I really enjoy your reviews off ABBA and how you clearly seem to enjoy their music. Just because of this, I am a fan of your channel. It seems almost rare to see a guy like you ( the next generation..) appreciate the music that layed the grounds for modern day music. So a HUGE thumbs up for you and your open mind and appreciating music that still does feel fresh, but needs to be re-discovered and dug by people today that missed out on that great 70's wirl that gave so much grand music, we nowadays wished we had on radio today. Really, this feels great! Thank you!
If there is a god then I'd say she hand picked these 4 extremely gifted people to form the Ultimate pop group. Their sound is heavenly and immaculate. It never diminishes however old the songs are. I still get goose bumps now when I listen to their music. Quite incredible.
When it was released as a single the proceeds were donated to UNICEF. It was also added to a UNICEF album with songs from other artists. They used this video from a BBC TV special.
The setting came from a TV special they did from Switzerland. It was just a convenient location rather than some elaborate artistic brain storm on how to convey the song. Original starting title of the song I think was 'In The Arms Of Rosalita. The Name Of The Game is a complex composition that will interest you,

🧡 ABBA ! This was one of ABBA's biggest hits. They donated 50% of the earnings to UNICEF. In 2014 all proceeds from this song went to UNICEF. You're were pretty spot on with the meaning of the song - when you're down, you always have a shoulder to lean on, and things will get better. Another thank you, Derek, for the look back.
the single was composed, produced and released in merely one month time. Agnetha and Björn separated in between at Christmas and single was released already in January 1979. No time for a video, so just they took the chance while doing an extended special in Leysin Switzerland in February to shoot a quick video in the snow setting. So more or less by accident. The used the TV special to present a couple of songs off their still to be released album Voulez Vous (23rd of April 1979). One of those songs was the later to be released Does Your Mother Know that interstingly enough ended up to have a different arrangement (intro) on the record than in that special. So in a way a demo version :-) worth having a look at that special with rare performances of songs never being released as a single like The King Has Lost His Crown, Kisses Of Fire and Lovers (Live A Little Longer) .
ABBA performed at the TV broadcast gala Music for Unicef Concert in New York on January 9, 1979 and performed the song Chiquitita. ABBA donated all future royalties from the song to the United Nations Children's Fund Unicef, which has generated many millions to the Children's Fund,
This song was ABBA's selection to a benefit album called "Songs for UNICEF." There were a lot of big stars from the time that contributed songs (Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Olivia Newton-John, Earth Wind and Fire, Donna Summer, to name a few). It was also made into a tv special, and this video was the performance submitted to be shown for "Chiquitita" on that tv special. I've always been a bigger fan of Agnetha, but Frida looked incredible, almost glowing in this video. I've always thought it was interesting how the long keyboard solo wasn't used as a bridge to another verse or the chorus again, but just kind of carried the song off.
This clip was taped by the BBC during recording of the show ABBA in Switzerland, broadcast across Europe at Easter 1979, although this clip did not feature in the broadcast, being intended for a Christmas programme. ABBA are seen performing the song on a mountainside, with a snowman in the background.

It's ABBA! Of course it's going to be up-beat at some point in the song! LOL They've got a knack of making sad songs quite jolly, especially during the choruses. Although, this is an overall happy song, if you think about it. Telling this small child that things aren't as bad as they seem. The location isn't entirely dissimilar to Fernando, with the, 'singing around a campfire', type setting going on. I guess it gives a warm, cosy feel, if nothing else, which is counterpointed by the fact they're all sat in a snow covered area. The snowman looks happy, though. Another interesting song would be, 'Name of the Game.' Another relationship themed song, but one you might appreciate.
This song to me showcases their unique vocals to the max from the soft, gentle verse to really belting out the chorus. Beautiful song, one of their best. Pure ABBA Gold. Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" just stopped this from being another UK No 1
It's a fantastic song with an optimistic message. The singer tries to comfort 'Chiquitita' whose 'love is a blown-out candle'. "A good fourth maybe mid-track for an album" you said. The public disagreed and it was a number 1 hit in many countries and top 10 in many more. "Chiquitita, you and I know How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end You will have no time for grieving Chiquitita, you and I cry But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you." What a lovely message. I'm not sure that you got this one.
Dereck spotted the voices getting together. This is a very freak thing. However, both Agnetha (blond) and Frida, are professional singers and are able to change tones in their voices to match each other. But when they first sang (on holiday, with the men from the band) they all turned shocked to look at each other - as they could not believe their ears.

There’s a video on TikTok that’s going viral, with 10 seconds of the upbeat piano part at 7:34 - It popped up on some videos from animal accounts I follow on Instagram, but unfortunately I can’t remember which ones😕
I for one really enjoyed your analysis of this song and subsequent ABBA songs you have covered. Ignore the negative criticism. Those who aren’t happy can go elsewhere.👍
ABBA...if there's one constant, expect to be surprised!!! Bennie & Bjorn wrote all their music w/ guitar and piano...then exploded into the incredible instrumentation and arrangements!!!! Wonder hiow much time spent cruising the cosmos?? Chiquitita was ABBA's song gifted to UNICEF, 1979...
Try The name of the game, eagle, gimme Gimme Gimme, summer night city, head over heels, does your mother know, lay all your love on me, the day before you came. As good as new, All great and unique songs. I think there are 115 in total.. There is no pop group that has that much diversity in styles and so recognizable. And you can listen to it 100 times and still discover new details. It never bores
Chiquitita was finalized and then presented to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. the purpose was to raise money for UNICEF and to kick off the International Year Of The Child in January, 1979. ABBA agreed to donate half of the proceeds from Chiquitita to UNICEF from 1979 to 2019. In 2014 all ABBA members decided to give 100% of the proceeds. One can view the UNICEF concert video of Chiquitita on RUclips. But, ABBA has always had a heart for children. Frida organized, built, and financed orphanages in Europe for children and continues to finance them today. ABBA has ssold almost 1/2 billion records and they are a mega band; yet if you watch videos of songs like I Have A Dream you can see behind the scenes video of practice for the song at Wembly Stadium in London with children that were selected to sing the song with them on stage during the ABBA concert in front of 30,000 people +. They coached and treated the children like they were their common next door neighbors and one would never think they were mega stars if one didn't know better.
Lovely interpretation. It's the first song after Agnetha and Bjorn separated so that puts another layer on too. Is Chiquitita actually Agnetha or is it her daughter? ?? Clever stuff. Actually my favourite ever song. Yes the setting is really in Switzerland from a special they did. Chiquitita has earned millions for UNICEF and now Cher is doing the same with the Spanish version.
You are so cute yet very manly but soft spoken as well. Keep up your videos! Love from Sweden and a Swedish guy who lived in the US for 22 years but back home enjoying life and family. Take care! Kram
Maybe you asked yourself what the snowy scene has to do with the spanish sounding recording. The Story behind it is that Abba did not record an official Video for the Song, this Version was shot when Abba flew to Switzerland in Winter to produce a X Mas Special in the Swiss Alps
The song is not meant to be sad. I always took it as a song of inspiration. "The sun still in the sky and shining above you." You will get over your bad times.
Dereck, you need to get yourself cd copies of ABBA Gold & More ABBA Gold. This track was kept off the No.1 position in early 1979 UK chart by Blondie Heart Of Glass.
If you want to research this song further, there is a great (!) live version from Wembley 1979. And if you want to react to ABBA live, check out Hole in Your Soul or The Way Old Friends Do from the same concert. None of ABBAs greatest hits but amazing live versions.
Dude, I love watching your reacts as your taste in music is really interesting and vast, BUT ..... you're constantly pausing and playing and then pausing really annoys the f*** out of me, you're ruining the entire experience, at least save your comments until the end of the video....plz!!!!
P.S. Derek welcome to RUclips. Now with that being said, STOP stopping the videos so much!!! I have found that if you listen to the song in its entirety your questions will be answered. also how can you possibly enjoy the song when you are picking at it every 5 seconds??? sit back, listen to the song, enjoy it and save your stuff for AFTER the song. Also, sometime whom the song is about may be left to your imagination instead of them spelling it out.
I seem to recall that this "video" was actually part of a UNICEF television special - that they may have been coming live from that location during the show - and so this also became their official video
I'll disagree on one point. It is quite easy to differentiate between Agnetha and Anni-Frid's voices. Anni-frid is Mezzo soprano and Agnetha is soprano
This is awesome! I’m an ABBA fan before i admired other great talented artists in the music industry. You know why I like them than the rest? They’re Swedish, but holy cow their diction when they sing are so perfect, no accent at all. But Derek, I hope you can read this post and i would like you to react another artist with an exceptional talent, a 23 year old female singer from the Philippines, her name is Morissette Amon and react to her cover song of “ never enough! “ and a lot more. Believe me, you will love her. Just be truthful with your comment(s) and believe me, 30K subscribers in a month is easy. Pls, bro, do it. There’s nothing to lose, but a lot to gain. Have a great day man!
Hola Derek!! Muchas gracias 😊
About a girl by the name of Chiquitita in the news who tragically died of famine in front of the whole world and how she will enjoy joy in afterlife and dance and sing again, heartbreaking aswell as heartwarming. All proceedings went to UNICEF and still does to help children in need in the world, long before World Aid. They even recorded it in different languages like in Spanish to boost proceeds: ruclips.net/video/y7t-pnfnsG8/видео.html Search ABBA, Chiquitita and you might find a version in your languages, they did it to boost proceeds❤ Remarkably enough still played and broadcasted at midnight on New Year's Eve every year here in Sweden, probably to encourage to people to help less fortunate children in the world.
One of my very first reactions and also a favorite of mine, shall I revisit this and do a redo?
Absolutely!

I was never an ABBA fan but being a keyboard player myself the piano in this song is absolutely brilliant
This song still raises money for UNICEF as ABBA signed the royalties for this song over to them
Raised about 4 million dollars so far. Björn held speech about it at the UN in 2014, 40 years after winning the ESC with Waterloo.

No choice if he wants to comment,
If he doesn't pause then you just watch him listening... 😅
Info only. The snowy backdrop was due to the band doing a TV special set in Switzerland.
I love this song!
Love from Sweden and a Swedish guy who lived in the US for 22
years but back home enjoying life and family. Take care! Kram
You gotta remember , we didn't really know video back in those days. Oh to be young again. Anyway, glad you're the older stuff.
It was the anthem for the UN year of the child 1979
Maybe you asked yourself what the snowy scene has to do with the spanish sounding recording. The Story behind it is that Abba did not record an official Video for the Song, this Version was shot when Abba flew to Switzerland in Winter to produce a X Mas Special in the Swiss Alps
I'm a metal fan but love abba . Love chicken tikka
Only one year!!! You look soooo young ❤️❤️❤️
The song is not meant to be sad. I always took it as a song of inspiration. "The sun still in the sky and shining above you." You will get over your bad times.
React to the Spanish version by ABBA. You are going to love it. This is until this day the highest selling single in the history of Latin America
Xoxoxo harmonies.....
Just read facts that Agneta & Björn,broke up ,during the time of "doing" this song,no wonder she´s looking a bit sad.
If you want to listen to the song, listen to it. He's reacting the way he's comfortable with.
Diana Probst absolutely correct! If people don’t like the style of his presentation they can go elsewhere instead of posting negative comments.
As a huge ABBA fan I (as many other fans) already know the song and enjoy very much looking at someone else's reaction of listening for 1st time,
Frida was having a bad hair day ..lol :)
And never looked more beautiful.
you need to do The Winner Takes it all and The Day Before You Came
You need to rewind the song back 5 secs when you stop it to speak so as to get back in the groove of the song.
Great job man. Straight from the heart. Please react to Queen.
7:14 when someone walks towards the snowman behind Bjorn
My nickname is Tita, have you seen it? That was my child song lol
I seem to recall that this "video" was actually part of a UNICEF television special - that they may have been coming live from that location during the show - and so this also became their official video
Hi Dereck! There's a Spanish version of that song.
Just be truthful
with your comment(s) and believe me, 30K subscribers in a month is easy. Pls, bro, do it. There’s nothing to lose, but a lot to gain. Have a great day man!
Yeas you can..Annefrid is holding the lower range
Hola Derek!!
This didn't have a proper film/video, they just re-used a later performance for a TV show to promote it.
They even recorded it in different languages like in Spanish to boost proceeds:

Search ABBA, Chiquitita and you might find a version in your languages, they did it to boost proceeds❤
Remarkably enough still played and broadcasted at midnight on New Year's Eve every year here in Sweden, probably to encourage to people to help less fortunate children in the world.
