    Citizen watches are so underrated. Their QC blows Seiko away

    Nice thorough review. I've been a GMT/travel watch collector for many years (mechanical mostly) and to be quite honest, I'm tiring of dealing with fluctuating accuracy and power reserve issues with mechanicals. Another thing is having to worry about getting mugged/robbed/killed for nice watches in so many places these days. It's taking a risk wearing a nice watch, sadly!
    This Citizen has my #1 prerequisite for a GMT watch...that independent adjustable hour hand (making it a true "travel GMT"). I can't stand GMT watches that don't do that and only have the adjustable 24hr hand.
    I'm going to have to seriously consider adding this watch to my stable.
    Again, great review. Thanks!!
    p.s. there IS NO SUCH THING as a "one watch collection"!! 😂😂
    (and I'll always need to know the time in Honolulu . It's where I live!! 😉😎)

      Delighted to hear you enjoyed it! And no (intentional) shade on Honolulu! I'd heartily recommend this watch, it is still one of my all time favourites, it just looks so put together and so clean.

    I posted this elsewhere but I think it is worth Sharing. Here's how to correctly use the GMT function of this watch. You are going to set your local time and the time in a secondary city which I will call the "reference" time. This may be a city you frequently travel to, or have family, whatever. For this example my local time is NYC and my reference city is Paris.
    1. Set the GMT hand to the time of the "reference city" using the 24 hour scale (a quick google will bring up world time web sites). Right now it is 10:00pm in Paris so I am setting the GMT hand to 22. (10+12). Note that the hour, minute and GMT hand are all coupled.
    2. Move the minute hand into position, the GMT hand will adjust too. If hacking set the minute hand to the next minute and push the crown at 0:00 time.
    3. Set the crown to position 1 and set the hour hand for the local time. You must do this step last. Adjust the date as needed.
    So now you see your local time and the time of your reference city. Only the local time uses the hour hand, Your reference city uses the GMT hand in 24:00 scale. You can see these two times at a glance, any time of the day. Now comes the good part. Rotate the bezel so that your reference city (Paris) aligns with the GMT hand. Do you see what just happened? All the cities on the bezel are now showing the correct GMT time in their time zone!! In this example it's 22:00 hours in Paris, 02:00 in Karachi and 14:00 in Denver. The GMT hand is always correct for Paris but if I want to know the GMT time for anywhere else, you must realign the bezel so that GMT hand is pointing to Paris. Turn the bezel in either direction, it doesn't matter. Your local time needs no further adjustment. Of course if you are traveling, you need only adjust the local hour hand in position 1, but always leave the GMT hand referenced to Paris. Now I see the local time, the reference time, and after bezel realignment still read NYC time on the 24 hour scale. And that's how it's done! Remember, you need to rotate and realign the bezel anytime you want to know GMT time anywhere in the world.

      Probably the best explanation/tutorial on how to utilize these remarkable functions….I just ordered mine today. It’s very difficult to get a true GMT for under $5000USD and this Citizen ECO Drive checks all the boxes for it (and for under $300USD). I cannot understand for the life of me why Citizen would discontinue this model, I had to order mine from the UK. Thanks again for the tutorial and for the video!! Cheers!!

      Since I am a radio operator who communicates across time zones, I set the GMT hand on the actual GMT (UTC) time. Now you always know what UTC time is at a glance. If you want to know other cities, just rotate the bezel to line up with London and the GMT hand and you will have all the times of the cities in the world correctly displayed.

    Nice review. I love this watch but I wish they had not done this crown exceed so much from the case. I have a bit bigger wrist than yours but many times I find the crown annoyingly stuck in my skin. It's a pity because it's an awesome watch, comfortable bracelet and really nice finishing, that full brush.

    E o Citizen tem ainda uma tecnologia de autorrecarga chamada "ECO DRIVE". A pulseira metálica também tem a facilidade de botões laterais no fecho dela. Ela abre fácil pelos botões. E o botão principal do relógio, ele tem essa textura áspera que também agrada muito na estética esportiva.
    Acho que o relógio é bonito por vários detalhes. A tampa traseira também tem um desenho típico da Citizen que parece ser uma "cartografia". E o relógio é 200 m! E também não custa tanto assim.

    Since the hour hand is only able to jump forward on this movement, if you have to go back an hour or two, do you just advance it all the way to the needed position? But wouldn't that advance the date as well, since it is linked to the hour hand (rather than to the GMT hand), requiring you to advance the date wheel by 30 positions? And that's every time you need to jump the hour hand backward. To me that's a major flaw and the one reason why I passed on this Citizen, which is really unfortunate. Or am I missing something here?

    • @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews
      @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews  3 года назад +1

      So, the way it works is normally you set the orange hand as your home time zone, and the white hour hand is used to tell the time in the time zone of the country you're in, as this hand jumps when you set it.

      The manual is in Japanese I'm afraid! So I can't tell because I don't speak or read Japanese. However, I believe what you're supposed to do is use the orange hand to track your home time zone, and use the white hour hand as your "local" time zone when abroad.

      There's a comment from Cal Lefty he left on this video that explains in incredible detail how to set it. Basically, the idea is when you are travelling, the orange GMT hand tracks your home time zone, and the white hour hand is set to local time in the country you are in.

    The seconds hand appears to miss the indices on the other side of twelve, though.

    • @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews
      @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews  2 года назад +1

      I reckon it misses a few, but hits a lot more than it misses. I reckon it's a 70:30 split, maybe even 80:20. Not bad.

    • @nerdbot37
      @nerdbot37 2 года назад

      @@TheWatchtowerWatchReviews No, not bad at all. I have a couple of Citizens in the same boat (a Blue Angels Nighthawk and basic field or flieger style -- I think it's called a Garrison? Or maybe Chandler?). Missing a few indices is far from a deal-breaker on such otherwise nice (and affordable) watches! But just as we have to be honest about Seiko's problem with misaligned chapter rings and bezels, we have to be honest about Citizen Eco-Drives not hitting all the indices.

    • @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews
      @TheWatchtowerWatchReviews  2 года назад

      Agreed, but here's the thing. Seiko can easily sort those issues, as there's a lot less moving parts to sort. Getting a quartz/solar quartz to hit every indice is much more difficult, as the movement would have to tick EXACTLY the same amount with zero stutter/bounceback. That, or each dial would have to be made in such a way to match each individual movement.
      I'm not disagreeing, but people give Seiko s##t because their issues are sloppier. Citizen's not hitting all indices but hitting most is more time consuming and costly to resolve, and likely adds more to the price than the value
