    We have three kids and having the option to put one in the 3rd is key for everyone’s happiness. Looking to buy basically your exact spec here, SR5 Premium, white with the 3rd row. Wasn’t planning to buy a vehicle this year but I feel that I need to get one of these now before they go go forced induction and/or hybrid on the last one. We always ran Land Cruisers till recently and the rices in used Cruisers right now I have a hard time justifying. I think this represents the last of the old school Toyota SUV’s and that’s why I value it so much. As a vehicle to buy and hold onto for 20 years, like my last LC, I just don’t see that being possible with something that has battery banks or a turbo on it with more upkeep needed. I think there are folks thinking the same thing because 22 4Runners are mostly ore sold coming into the dealership where I am. Ugh, we live in strange times.

    This is why we bought the SR5 instead of the TRD models -- the third row. Glad Toyota does that - because there'd be no capable offroader in this segment that can haul our family of six when we want to go offroading! We have a van for day-to-day trips as a family, but the 4Runner is great to explore backroads or haul our Opus trailer to go camping. Glad you reviewed it!

    Very thorough review on the 3rd row. We love ours! Biggest disadvantage, like you mentioned is the limited cargo space when the 3rd row is being used. We have found that a Tailgate Net from Raingler is a necessity with a 3rd row package if you don't want groceries or luggage falling out. It also increased the use-able cargo capacity.

    Hello, I have a 2015 SR5 with 3rd row seats, I have 3 kids aged 8, 5 and 2 years. In 2020 they are 13 / 10 and 7 and they fight to sit in the 3rd row. They have grown a ton but for some reason love to sit back there. My wife and I love the 4Runner so much we keep the 4Runner and upgreaded her Honda Accord to a 2017 Sequoia SR5 4x4, That 5.7 is thirsty but is so POWERFUL and has so much more room. We have driven 3 time from California to Colorado 17 hours in the car, kids like the 3rd row just fine.

    I use it all the time. It’s just a cool option to have. Most of the time when you don’t use it you obviously just fold it down. I always keep both the second and third row folded down throughout the week since I’m always lugging gear and equipment around. When you need it then bam it’s there if you need to haul a bunch of people. There’s no negative to having it. It’s there if you need it. I love just having that option compared to only having a 5 seater like in the trd pro and other trims.

    • @ranran2806
      @ranran2806 2 года назад +4

      The negative to having the third row is that none of the trims that offer it have crawl control, multi terrain select, or even a rear locker. For people off-roading, that is a huge disadvantage.

  • @patricklawrence2755
    @patricklawrence2755 4 года назад +16

    I have that exact configuration...that 3rd row is more spacious than you would think. No, its not Benz S-class-backseat comfortable, but i have ridden back there with my 6yr old just for kicks, and it aint that bad, i am only 5'8". My son has also been back there for a full road trip from Wash DC to Connecticut on a couple of occasions, and was just fine having his 'own row' as he phrased it. I have also fit 3 kids, all under 11, back there in a pinch. It is just what it is labeled as - a jump-seat. I might use it once a month, not daily or weekly. If you need a dedicated 3rd row, then buy something bigger. But if you find yourself with an extra kid or two on any given weekend, or you need to run more than 3/4 ppl somewhere, it works just fine for that.
    The second row, moved all the way forward, can feel a bit cramped, depending on passenger size. However, at any other adjustment, the second row is very comfortable and can be compared to almost any vehicle short of a full-size stretched SUV (Navigator/Escalade/Soquioa/etc)
    To answer Yas's question, with the rear window rolled down, you do NOT get exhaust smell into the cabin. actually, one of my fav things to do in the warm months is to roll down all of the windows, and you get a wonderful flow of air front-to-back...with no buffeting.

    I have a 2018 sr5 because I prefer a third row. I feel they’re a l more flexible and you kinda get the best of both worlds. You can fold the seats down if you need to haul things and you can haul more people of need be. Third row is recommended for kids and short adults but have made it work with taller people by having folks in middle row slide forward a tad bit and the front row as well for middle row passenger comfort.

    I bought my SR5 Premium specifically for the 3rd row seat and I've been really happy with it. I have 2 car seats in the middle row, so when I need to use the 3rd row, it can be a little hard to get people in and out, but it's manageable. I've taken 5+ hr trips with 1 adult in the 3rd row and multiple trips around town for a few hours with 2 adults in the back and have heard no complaints from anyone. The biggest problem is the car seats, not the vehicle itself.

    Only concern for me about the third row is the risk of a rear-end collision/pile-up. Seeing how close to the third row headrests sit to the trunk door worries me about letting the young ones sit there. The 3rd row is definitely helpful and reliable, but alas we can't control the behavior of other motorists.

    Does the 3rd row seat get good air ventilation/Are there any air vents? Thanks!

    • @DrivenCompanion
      @DrivenCompanion  3 года назад +1

      Unfortunately no. There is a single vent for the middle row passengers that isn't particularly effective either.

    • @lilzacheus
      @lilzacheus Год назад

      Here’s a trick to have some of the air go to the third row…. Aim all the front row vents upwards and have the air circulation button turned on and that will help the third row passengers feel some of that air as it circulates through the cabin of the 4Runner.

  • @labjujube
    @labjujube 3 года назад

    Main concern is safety, the 3rd row is basically at the very rear end of car.

    So rear seats are pretty much only for occasions. So far I think the Honda Pilot is my best choice. The highlander is smaller. The 4runner also seems smaller and the third row seat does no seem to be meant for every day use. And the sequoia is more expensive and worst gas mileage.

    • @DrivenCompanion
      @DrivenCompanion  3 года назад

      4Runner is going to better if you need an off-roader... if not then definitely go with the Pilot or Highlander.

    Can you put a car seat on the 3rd row?

    • @JPJamster
      @JPJamster 4 года назад

      I wouldn't recommend putting any of my family in the third row, especially a child in a car seat. I'd hate to see what would happen during a rear end collision.

    • @jeffmeisterr
      @jeffmeisterr 4 года назад

      Jaims Pedrosa good point, will it be the same for side impact collisions? Thanks for the response.

    • @JPJamster
      @JPJamster 4 года назад

      @@jeffmeisterr I've seen people put a child seat in the middle area of the second row, I understand that they are avoiding side impacts in doing so but my concern here is that if the seat belts fail, the child seat and child may be catapulted out of the windshield. I've always had my child on the right side and my wife sits on the front right too so both of their safety is ingrained. When I go thru intersections I scan both left and right to make sure no one is beating a light or what have you. When I was younger I suffered to rear end collisions. One I saw coming but could not get out of the way, but the other I didn't. I guess it all boils down to what suits your driving style and sense of security as accidents are not always avoidable. I would probably get the 7 seater and would only out someone, other than my family, in the third row for short trips. If it was a suburban, given the longer distance from bumper to third row, it I might be ok with it

    • @jeffmeisterr
      @jeffmeisterr 4 года назад

      Jaims Pedrosa I feel yeah, my nephew and his friends got t-boned by a drunk driver, 2 of them passed away (including my nephew) and 3rd one severely injured.

    • @JPJamster
      @JPJamster 4 года назад

      @@jeffmeisterr I am so sorry to hear this (prayers for all), absolutely devastating. one of the reasons I want a 4runner is the height, which if t-boned by a regular car (different story if it was by a similar vehicle), would impact below the seating positions on all three rows. I'd also check for curtain airbags and the like. I watch a lot of accident videos and there is no way to safeguard against all scenarios but we can always try our best which is why we ask and learn form each other. stay safe my friend.

    • @DrivenCompanion

      No, the 3rd row seats don't effect the position of the 2nd row. You can adjust forward and back whenever.

    This is a massive car how is there no storage? Terrible use of space. My 08 Rav4 has more cargo room with the 3rd row up

    • @romeshprakashpalan8895
      @romeshprakashpalan8895 4 года назад +2

      Since it is a Body on Frame SUV with a 4WD system (and old style solid axle for strength/articulation) it is a lot tougher than the Rav4, but the downside is that it suffers for lack of space. That's why most new vehicles today are Crossovers and not like this or the Jeep Wrangler.
      But if you like to do a lot of offroading, the 4Runner or Wrangler cannot be beat!

      My wife and I looked at the all new Highlander and that was nice with some decent to good rear storage with the 3rd row up. We have a 4runner built for Dirt and camping but wanted something similar in overall size and brand but much more street and fuel friendly for our soon to be family.
