@@AAutoBuyersGuidePlease note that Model X has different leg rooms for 6-seater vs 7-seater (113.1 vs 109.6). The one you listed in the video is for 7-seater.
Do yourselves a favor and give the atlas a chance I've had it for two and a half years and out of the three large SUV's I've had it's our favorite I have no idea why it didn't make this list
Yeah this was a ton of work I’m sure, and greatly appreciated! Most of us don’t have the time or even available cars or dealerships to work through this ourselves. Even if we did it would take months to do. Thanks!
It is great that Alex was so honest about the lack of legroom in some cars. I want a car with usable third row legroom for long road trips. It drives me crazy when some reviewers said they can fit comfortably in a model Y third row, when the leg room is non existent!I love my minivans, I recently got rid of mine, and how I’m looking for another vehicle with a usable third row but it is so hard to find anything that’s comparable to a minivan
Hello there, my kindred spirit (although I do have three grandkids, they're 1400 miles away, and the oldest one is about to get a driver's license) 😲😲🤣🤣
Alex is without a doubt the most comprehensive auto reviewer. Outstanding video. The only noticeable snub that didn’t make the list was the Subaru Ascent. Land Rover Discovery.
Ascent is just OK, not great not as good as telluride or better but a little more than CX-9. Seats 3 but I'd assumed only 3 kids or 2 adults. Cargoe is just meh too. I wanted it to be better than it is.
This is S tier content and the GOAT of 3rd row seating guides! 2 suggestions: 1) Include the vehicle length (this is very important if you have a small garage) 2) Land Rover has several models which fit the bill as well (such as the Discovery Sport)
Just purchased the 2023 Wagoneer L not long ago. We have 5 teenagers and we sat in about every 3rd row option out there. We retired a 2017 Suburban that the kids outgrew, as the third row was slowly becoming too cramped for long distance road trips. Wagoneer L all the way. So much more comfortable, especially if driving 3 adults in the 3rd row. I do have to say, the moon roof is a must for an option. It adds more headroom and feels a lot better in the 3 row for visibility over a Wagoneer without it.
As a fellow 3rd row climber at the Chicago auto show (been doing it since having kids): kudos to you. This was a full a exhaustive list of all quirks and details and your graphics were spot on to convey all relevant info. And personally I've come to similar conclusions. Great stuff!
VW Atlas is good and would be great with 300+ horsepower (or possibly turbo WR6). Too bad this isn’t at least an option for SEL. *Had 2018 SEL Premium 4motion for 3 years.
This video looked so hard to make. Graphics, information, walking around the auto show, making sure you cover every car, etc. I’m so glad it paid off (the comments are overwhelmingly positive).
Impressive review, Alex! Loved the attention to detail in your comparisons and the surprise result was intriguing. Looking forward to more unbiased reviews like this. Great job!
Just did comparison shopping on three row midsize (I am 5'11" 190lbs, weightlifter) and many of these third rows are a joke, especially with three across in the third row. Unless you have very small children forget about putting adults in many of these third rows unless it is an emergency and maybe 10-15 minute drive. Alex, you did an amazing job as always but I do wish you would have touched on the useable cargo space with 2 and 3 rows up because some of these vehicles really sacrifice cargo space with three rows. We ended up with a 7 seater Atlas due to the sheer size of the three rows and available cargo space with all three rows up. We just did a 1K mile trip with 4 adults, an infant, and two teenagers and everyone was comfortable and we had room in the back for 6 carry ons and some other bags. I went into this really wanting to get the new CX-90, a Pilot, or a Highlander, but none of them stacked up well against the Atlas in terms of space, comfort, cargo, and overall package and price. It's crazy how expensive these vehicles are! CX-90, and Pilots were all well into the $50K and all of the local Toyota dealers wanted a markup on the Highlander. Telluride and Pallisade were hard to find also with only $55-60K+ equipped models available on dealer lots (most of them had markup). Crazy. Not sure how people are buying these with 6-8% interest rates.
Great video, I hate to make a suggestion since I know how much work this was, though possibly a better way would be to sit in the second row seat, adjust to a standard amount of legroom and seat incline (that you use across all vehicles), then slide into the seat behind that... Since I feel the third row leg room might be quite variable depending on how the second seat is positioned and whether they allow you to put the second seat in an uncomfortable configuration.
Great review. I would be nice if you could include a final summary list of all the dimensions. Could you do a similar list for towing capacity? Your reviews are outstanding. Thanks for all the time you put in these videos.
Common 3rd row resident here; stretch out room for arms and legs is pivotal. That space in between the second row captain chairs is super nice to have. Also, bring a pillow so you can lean sideways.
I think this is the best video you've done, for my purposes! We're at the stage in life where we will shortly need a 5th full size seat for road trips (not around town, there we're fine with 4 full size seats), so the 3rd row utility is now an actual important metric instead of just how much cargo space there is with the 3rd row flipped down. Looks like the Grand Highlander, upcoming TX, Yukon, Expedition, Wagoneer, Telluride, and Palisade make the short list.
BOF isn't an issue for me. All of the vehicles on the short list are at least satisfactory in terms of passenger and cargo space, so it's the more qualitative things that'll be deciding factors.
@@habu987 hopefully the TX will still have an option for an 8 seater and the passenger specs won't differ too much from the corporate cousin grand highlander since it is considered a "midsize" SUV on the outside with full size space in the inside. Meanwhile the LX is a full size SUV on the outside with midsize space in the inside. So I am guessing that u do not need a full Size XL SUV that has minivan space inside (Wagoneer L, Yukon XL, Suburban, Expedition Max)?
Just one clarification with the Carnival: you CAN access the 3rd row without tilting the 2nd row seat forward. The sliding door opening is wide enough for an adult to pass behind the second row when the seat is slid forward. That way, you can access the 3rd row with a car seat in place.
Also with the captains chairs you can pass in front with the seat all the way back! Too bad we can't find Carnivals and there's a $10,000.00 minimum mark-up when you inevitably have to order one.
Oh boy ! The stupendous Alex comes exactly with the stuff we love him for : load of infos and comparisons (except for the Atlas and the Ascent, I agree with Gus Morales and A C, thumbs up guys)... Like so many others, I have to vote for the minivan advantages : more than 32 mgp (exactly 2 years since I own a AWD Sienna, in Quebec City winter conditions, studded Nokian tires 5 months a year)... But for those who can't stand a minivan, outstanding job , Alex !
if you don't want a minivan but want similar space, the grand highlander really is the deal. heck it even has more passenger volume in all three rows than the full-size sequoia (new one, not 2nd generation)
Even without the vehicles I'm guessing you're hoping to see at the Detroit or LA auto show, you've really outdone yourself! This is, bar none, the single most informative video for 3-row shoppers! THANK YOU!
Would be nice if you included or linked to a table with your overall rankings. For those who are curious, he rated the Wagoneer L as the best 3rd row in America (excluding full size vans).
This is one of the best videos of the car reviews that I have watched yet. Great job! One of the very best 3rd row SUV is VW Atlas which is surprisingly not mentioned in this video.
Hey Alex, I love this comparison video. If you can attach an excel sheet in the description would even be more helpful. But this is already a very informative video. As a family guy, this will help us a lot when choosing the right 3 row vehicle.
I have a family of 6 and just purchased a 2023 Wagoneer L, that 3rd row space plus 44 cubic feet of cargo room are two of the many reasons we decided to go with this vehicle over the Suburban or Yukon XL...just a dream to drive and own!
Superb video, really helpful, I wish this video existed about a year back when I was searching for a 3 row 8 passenger vehicle. I ended up getting the Grand Wagoneer 8 passenger, as I determined had the most comfortable 3rd row, this video validated my judgment 😊.
Best comparison review for this type of vehicle. No other car reviewer has done this. Please update this comparison from time to time. Excellent work Alex !
Sacrificed going to bed timely tonight for this video! Totally worth it. See if you can add a summary at the end about roomiest and highest 3rd rice SUVs
Scrolled through quickly to see if what I was looking for was discussed. Looks like ya missed the Landrover Defender 130. Given that model is all about the 3rd row space and its arguably a perfect slot between something like an X7 and a Yukon Denali, it definitely deserves to be on this list.
Would love to also know towing capacities with these 3 rows perhaps in the future. My primary reason for a 3-row suv aside from the 3rd row is for towing.
I prefer minivans over SUVs. They’re usually smaller in footprint than a large suv so parking is easier, Ingress egress are easier in a van and the sliding doors really help in tight spots
Talk is cheap, people often say that the minivan is the answer, but few actually make good on that if they’re the ones in the position to need a three tow vehicle to drive themselves around in. At the end of the day, people who buy three row SUVs are making due with it so the recipe seems to work in making a vehicle that is attractive enough and just usable enough that it works for most families.
Thanks for the comparison Alex. I wish that more reviewers did comparisons like this. I’m bummed though that you left out the VW atlas. I believe its the best of the midsize crossovers and would’ve done fairly well in this comparison.
Firstly an excellent review (and details for each model) haven’t seen anything like this from any UK car reviewers. I was however wondering about the Landrover Discovery? Have you had the opportunity to review it and how does it compare?
@@Johnny_Socko I have a Discovery Sport I would describe it as a 5+2 as there is not much space in the third row - children no problem, I have carried adults in the third row, a bit cramped OK for small-ish adults and fairly short journeys 😊
This was an amazing video! Thank you so mcuh for taking your time out to do this! Now I can see which car I need to get becuase 3rd row is so important! GOD BLESS ALL!!! 🙏🏾💓
I'm a detailer for a rental car company, and as someone who is hopping in and out of cars all day, I just wanna throw it out there that if you don't think you'll ever need to keep child seats anchored in while moving the second row, the one's that aren't "child seat friendly" are so much easier to get in and out of. The Highlander and the Sorento for instance, I can get into the rearmost row with one hand in one movement and the space is much wider because the seats fold flatter. The child seat friendly mini vans take two hands AND a shoulder shove sometimes, and then it's a very narrow entry into the 3rd row.
Awesome content. Given my empty nest the mission for the third row needs to be for adults. Given my EV aspirations, I opted for the most comfortable second row in the IONIQ 5. The spacious reclining seats are a plus as this is the slowest charging vehicle and shortest range I’ll accept. Looking forward to the third row possibilities of the EV9 right here. Thanks‼️ 23:26
I loved my prior Ioniq 5. For the external size, the second row logroom is surprisingly vast. My kids much prefer sitting in the backseat of the Ioniq versus my Rivian.
That was my thought. No doubt very comfortable, and the best choice if you need storage for sports, trips, or groceries, with all the family onboard, but there aren't many households with 5-6 kids that can afford a six figure vehicle. A very nice vehicle though if you can.
We have triplets and went with the Pacifica just before they were born. We did not get the hybrid or AWD versions because you lose the middle jump seat for the 2nd row. This is a MUST! What can you do with this? Well, you can sit three across in both the 2nd and 3rd row IF you have the correct seats. For click in buckets almost any brand will work in both rows and for hybrid you can do it with the Diono series in BOTH rows (I can prove it with photos), and the Chicco Quick Zip. This has worked from premie age to +5 so far. Drop into the floor seats for both 2nd and 3rd (tho you do need to stash the 2nd row middle jump seat someplace - we use the largest Yakima box we could get and it works on it's side) means you can store a TON in here and have room on the floor to change diapers or provide a portable potty for younger roadside breaks. Everything about the Pacifica is perfect for hauling multiples - the only downside is the tragically horrible middle console - just an awful design or maybe it's better now ours is a 2018 model.
@@DBLG65 just got a 2023 Traverse. Had the biggest 3rd Row and cargo space of the 3rd rows that weren't truck based (Wagoneer, Expedition, Tahoe). Like you, we wanted a change from minivan life. The trunk is definitely smaller than in the minivan, though.
I just bought a Kia Carnival because of this video. The 2 1/2 row you shown it’s what I was looking for. Plus the number of space for car seats in the third row
It would appear the quadruplets have good competition! Stellantis is showing up in good ol’ dodge family first fashion. Wait, how many imports have the children seat friendly spot available?
The best part is sharing how to get back to the third row with the child seats in the second row and sharing the space in the third row. Seat bottom cushion is very important, thanks for sharing its placement.
Because SUV and trucks have become a status symbol. Trucks are now more luxury than work trucks. I used to hate on minivans until I was given one as a rental while my car was in the shop after an accident. I was reluctant to drive it home, but after a few weeks I was reluctant to give it back. The more I used it the more I realized how useful it is.
Excellent video comparison. Would be nice to see the newer 3 rows like the Land Rover Discovery 130, Kia EV9, VW ID Buzz US Spec. ALSO, noting how the 2nd row folds to allow child seat in place is a great detail. Would also like to see how the 2nd and 3rd rows fold. ALSO, note whether the 2nd row is a 60/40 split vs 40/20/40 split that allows 2 people to sit with a pass through in the middle to allow longer cargo item such as skis, poles, etc.
I expected Mercedes Metris to win. It’s seating is very comfortable for passengers. I guess it’s disqualified because Alex would categorize it as a “full size van.”
This is one of the most needed comparisons! Every time I get excited about a 3-row SUV, I get deflated by the third row made for squarting on. I can't bring myself to buy a vehicle with a seat that can't comfortably accommodate a majority of possible passengers. Please keep updating it. Next time, include Buzz ID. Thank you.
Like this video, it can be a tool book. VW atlas has a much better 3rd row than many others, that's the reason I bought it. Looking forward to the 2nd part of this video!
You do fanatics work sir. With the help of your video. I decided to buy the Jeep Cherokee L. The child seat friendly second row seats basically sold me besides the awesome interior
What about the Subaru Ascent? My tape measure says its third row is wider than the Pilot, and it has one more inch for cargo behind the third row to the tailgate. The Pilot does have more third row headroom. If it was in your video, I totally missed it.
Note that the Outlander non-PHEV has a roomier 3rd row and if you pull the seat tab after it's up you can recline even further than the default, which adds extra headroom.
great video and a big effort to put it together. I love it. Can you please make another video to show the cargo space with/without 3rd in those SUVs. Some of them I noticed doesn't leave much space after the 3rd row.
Your video is very informative of all the three row SUVs. There’s one thing you forgot to mention. Any reliability concerns on any of these vehicles that people should keep in mind for long-term ownership after the warranty has expired.
My apologies, we'll have an updated video in the fall that will include the Atlas, EV9 when we have more detail, Aviator and Q7. Hey Alex, I love this comparison video. If you can attach an excel sheet in the description would even be more helpful. But this is already a very informative video. As a family guy, this will help us a lot when choosing the right 3 row vehicle.
Yes, if there is a spreadsheet with the dimensions all in one location would be awesome!!!
@@gstoner8432 Funny -I just sat down and did my own excel for this lol
@@ve2166 yeah, I thought about that too
@@ve2166Please share it with us!!! Google Drive, Microsoft Onedrive, however you want to do it. Thanks!
Practically the only video needed on the internet on the subject matter. Thanks Alex.
Seriously one of the best car review channels on youtube.
...THE...
yes, for dimensions and measurements I always look at Alex
Alex is my man for doing all these useful reviews and outing things to the real world test. Thank you for all your good service to us.
As a father that’s in the market for a 3 row SUV or minivan, this was an amazing video. Thank you for thinking of the car seat set ups.
The most professional reviewer in the market. A must review source when buying a new car.
I have a family of 6 and just purchased a 2023 Wagoneer L, that 3rd row space plus 44 cubic feet of cargo room are two of the many reasons we decided to go with this vehicle over the Suburban or Yukon XL...just a dream to drive and own!
Thanks for this Alex! So helpful that I have it saved as a video I revisit and send to folks who ask me about 3 row suvs
Superb video, really helpful, I wish this video existed about a year back when I was searching for a 3 row 8 passenger vehicle. I ended up getting the Grand Wagoneer 8 passenger, as I determined had the most comfortable 3rd row, this video validated my judgment 😊.
I was just thinking this on my way to work today and when i get home, this exact thing pops up on my feed. Wild.
Alex, you are the real MVP. Thank you!
This is the best informational video about 3-row SUVs I’ve come across.
Thank you!
Is there a spreadsheet on this Sir Alex?
Best comparison review for this type of vehicle. No other car reviewer has done this. Please update this comparison from time to time. Excellent work Alex !
Love this video. Great comparison for people like me always wonder about the 3rd row comfort.
Sacrificed going to bed timely tonight for this video! Totally worth it. See if you can add a summary at the end about roomiest and highest 3rd rice SUVs
Could you make a spreadsheet and make it available online? it would be easier to compare all the sizes side by side
Tbh, This video is most informative and professional review I have seen so far.
Scrolled through quickly to see if what I was looking for was discussed. Looks like ya missed the Landrover Defender 130. Given that model is all about the 3rd row space and its arguably a perfect slot between something like an X7 and a Yukon Denali, it definitely deserves to be on this list.
This is why this is the best vehicle review channel in all of RUclips period!
Would love to also know towing capacities with these 3 rows perhaps in the future. My primary reason for a 3-row suv aside from the 3rd row is for towing.
I’ve been measuring third row for years as to whether I could fit behind myself, behind myself this is your most valuable video to parents!
Just buy a minivan
I prefer minivans over SUVs. They’re usually smaller in footprint than a large suv so parking is easier, Ingress egress are easier in a van and the sliding doors really help in tight spots
Exactly...
For real, sienna awd get 32mpg(real world) none of those other 3 rows get that real world
The answer is minivan.
You made our job simple. Thanks for putting this video. Its covers all cars woth 7 and 8 seater segments
Thanks for the comparison Alex. I wish that more reviewers did comparisons like this. I’m bummed though that you left out the VW atlas. I believe its the best of the midsize crossovers and would’ve done fairly well in this comparison.
Left off the Ford Escape Active too. :-/
You’re saving hours of web searching for people looking for the best SUV With third row.
Specific, but great !
Thank you
Firstly an excellent review (and details for each model) haven’t seen anything like this from any UK car reviewers.
I was however wondering about the Landrover Discovery? Have you had the opportunity to review it and how does it compare?
Good point, and I believe the Discovery Sport offers a 3rd row as well (although it may be in Outlander/Tiguan territory in terms of size).
'Merica!
@@Johnny_Socko I have a Discovery Sport I would describe it as a 5+2 as there is not much space in the third row - children no problem, I have carried adults in the third row, a bit cramped OK for small-ish adults and fairly short journeys 😊
This is such a great video for families, best video
I've seen about 3rd rows. Thanks
This the BEST automobile video on RUclips so far, in term of 3rd row review 👍
If you want a 3 row SUV, this is the video for you, if you want a 3 row family hauler, buy a minivan
Thank you, Alex! This video is gold for a father of 3. Looking forward to more videos like that.
EV costs more to produce and to power. It also produces more emissions to produce and power.
Why EV?
I loved my prior Ioniq 5. For the external size, the second row logroom is surprisingly vast. My kids much prefer sitting in the backseat of the Ioniq versus my Rivian.
Thanks for taking one for the team and saving us a ton of time!
Jeep nailed it with its wagoneer variants. Under thigh support is great.
Very comprehensive content and just what my wife and I were looking for! Excellent job
Jeep wagoneer is an ultra luxury which common man couldn’t afford. Only option is mini van 😀
So basically get a minivan 😂, also you forgot the Subaru Ascent!
This was the MOST well researched video with some stellar visual graphics/information to boot! Very well done
Now do a comparison on the cargo space.
Minivans are superior unless you get the behemoth suburban wagoneer (inc. grand) L
@@naveenthemachine I agree. I've owned several since 99. Just want to try something different.
Amazing video, especially with the diagrams for car seats because that is exactly why I'm here!!! Thank you
Disappointed in the sequoia
I just bought a Kia Carnival because of this video. The 2 1/2 row you shown it’s what I was looking for. Plus the number of space for car seats in the third row
It would appear the quadruplets have good competition! Stellantis is showing up in good ol’ dodge family first fashion. Wait, how many imports have the children seat friendly spot available?
The best part is sharing how to get back to the third row with the child seats in the second row and sharing the space in the third row. Seat bottom cushion is very important, thanks for sharing its placement.
why did we kill the minivan
Because SUV and trucks have become a status symbol. Trucks are now more luxury than work trucks. I used to hate on minivans until I was given one as a rental while my car was in the shop after an accident. I was reluctant to drive it home, but after a few weeks I was reluctant to give it back. The more I used it the more I realized how useful it is.
Where I live there are still a lot of minivans on the road, it's the sedan that's been replaced by SUVs.
This is one of the best videos out there on car reviews.
Thank you. Thank you.
Please do it again for 2024.
Alex, I want to know how many CUVs (as opposed to body-on-frame SUVs) can hold a full sheet of plywood with the center and rear rows folded down. 🤔
The new Nissan Pathfinder can, I believe.
Thank you.
5:35 LOL!
I have a VW Atlas 2023 and the 3-row is absolutely amazing!
We Have a '23 Ascent and have found it to be very comfortable.
Cargo space behind the 3rd row is not huge, but manageable
@@akc5247 definitely no as roomy as this GL.
you make some of the best videos slammed packed with information, thank you so much for the hard work sir
Thank you for your effort. I hyper ventilated while watching you in some of vehicles ; those seats must stay as "mother in law seat" 😁
Note that the Outlander non-PHEV has a roomier 3rd row and if you pull the seat tab after it's up you can recline even further than the default, which adds extra headroom.
best comparison on youtube about 3 row SUV and their space. subbed
One of the best auto reviewers out there. Thank you for this review.
this was exactly missing on youtube. great efforts and thanks a ton!
great video and a big effort to put it together.
