What’s the Best 3-Row SUV of 2024?

- If you need a family vehicle to shuttle around your kids - or maybe your elderly parents - but won’t be caught dead in a minivan, what’s your best option? The answer, increasingly, is something like one of the seven vehicles tested here: a three-row SUV, which has replaced the minivan as the family vehicle of choice.
The three-row SUV class is huge, so we couldn’t bring all of them to this test - but we did gather some of the most popular 2024 models: the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Grand Highlander and the Volkswagen Atlas. And we got the nice versions, with all of them loaded to the roof with amenities and family-friendly features.
To test these family haulers we brought them to Palm Springs, Calif., and drove them around town, on twisty mountain roads and through some brutal Southern California traffic. We measured their cargo areas, assessed their features, tested child-safety seat fitment, scored their value for the money and took them on a 250-mile loop to see what kind of gas mileage they get in real-world driving. It was all to determine which one of these family trucksters is the best. Here’s how they finished:
1. 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Night Edition
2. 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium R-Line
3. 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited
4. 2024 Kia Telluride SX-Prestige X-Line
5. 2024 Honda Pilot Elite
6. 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum
7. 2024 Subaru Ascent Touring

For this comparison test, we invited popular three-row crossover SUVs from mainstream brands. The refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer and redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Traverse were not available to consider at the time of our testing.
Then the question should be, what's the best 3 row SUV of the first half of 2024, since 2 of the main contenders will be available in the second half.
I wish the Mazda CX-90 was part of the test
I work at Enterprise, and I absolutely love the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, and I don't seem to be the only one. I truly believe that the Palisade and Telluride are the best three row SUVs you can get on the market.
Forgot CX90
We focus on the most popular models by sales so our comparison tests are relevant to the most number of shoppers. The Mazda CX-90 didn't make the cut based on this.
@@CarsDotComThis makes no sense for a car review channel: reviewing the cars is your job. Besides, if you found it to be a leading choice, you might even have the effect of boosting the sales numbers.
@@CarsDotCom it’s a comparison based on category, not sales. You dropped the ball on this. 🤡
We just bought a 2025 Honda Pilot Touring AWD 2 weeks ago...and it's currently in the shop for issues
Really what happened? They older Pilots were bullet proof.
The 2016 honda pilot was not bulletproof.
I have a 2024 with 13k miles. Not issue just an oil change? No complaints..
If you had tested the Palisade Calligraphy sans the black edition., the pricing would have been about the same as the rest of the cars. Also, If you had tested the Pilot Elite, the pricing would have been higher. Palisade wins every time. That is why we own one.
all over priced $53k what family of 6 can afford that ? should of tested the entry price Model that most can afford
This is a result of people wanting 20 inch screens, panoramic sunroofs, 20 usb charging outlets, heating and cooling seats in every row, and on and on.
Average new vehicle price is $48K. It's the new norm
Most of the 'dislike" area of the Palisade was fixed in the Santa FE such as wireless apple carplay, Turbo V4, New infotainment system (CCNC)...etc. The new Palisade will destroy the competition.
💯
Mazda cx90 ?

Man the interior of pilot can give you depression !! Looks super dudd

Disrespectful.
@@CarsDotCom Your company's focus is pretty lame. Punish a great but lesser known vehicle by not letting the general public know just how good the CX-90 is.
The Grand Highlander has $8K+ minimum mark ups here in Southern California. Ended up getting the Palisade AWD. Love the V6 smooth engine and overall comfort. Plenty of space for my toddlers and my husband's 6"5 height.
You’ll regret getting the palisade over the grand Highlander
@@wjoseph-rx9mj I regret not getting the Palisade sooner, if you never driven one I suggest not to opine either. If you have, not sure where your logic lies overpaying a toyota by more than $10K+ mark up for a 4 cylinder 3row toyota? For the record, I used to own Tundra truck and a Sienna, toyota makes great cars, but overhyped, overpriced, not worth shelling out $10k+ for a similar car.
@@ASD-DAD you’ll regret it just like my neighbour

You should adjust the comparison with the Traverse - size v price (and with deals you can find), it seems like a great new addition.
Absolute nonsense, MISLEADING
VW is the LEAST reliable, with the WORST owners ratings! Also it only gets a "MARGINAL" rating in IIHS front crash backseat safety test. The 2.0 engine is undersized (wear&tear), it is the 2nd most expensive vehicle in this test, high deepreciation, worst user interface, loudest, etc...
Also there are dozens of other reviews of Atlas and I never saw anyone else praise its handling the way you did...
You gave it 18 points less for the huge difference in fuel economy and then give it the same 18 points more for child-safety seats, makes no sense...
2 kinds of cars in the world Volkswagen….and the rest 😁💥💯
I think that the top 2 have been riddled with issues that I just can’t trust them
I’m driving the Pathfinder. I don’t care about the screen looking dated. The map works, apple car play works fine. Also, can get the bench for the second row, hard to find on top trims. PS the Palisade mirrors are really wide, they don’t power fold either. I couldn’t get it into my garage.
I still don’t get why the Kia has power folding mirrors and the Hyundai dosen’t…
HONDA 🗣 PUT THE 12.3 INFOTAINMENT IN THE PILOT, AND GIVE IT A HYBRID OPTION!!
Any recommendations on SUV with air suspension.
I really like that Honda gives you the ability to get three passengers in the second row in top trims. Captains chairs are a giant no-go for my family of five for the times when we need to maximize cargo while everyone coming along. That removable middle seat set up is so much more useful. That more than makes up for things like a smaller screen.
Thank you for the review. Blessings to you.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
WOW they got it wrong!!! Clearly number one is the Highlander and clearly the Honda pilot comes way in front of Hyundai and Kia last on the list should be the atlas not the Subaru … according to reliability.. NOTE. Their order had Nothing to do with RELIABILITY.. I guess CARS only rates on the # of cup holders and storage bins
Did you really just make this video without the new Traverse? That is a super hot 3rd row right now
2025 isn't available yet in all markets
For this comparison test, we invited popular three-row crossover SUVs from mainstream brands. The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was not available to consider at the time of our testing.
Thanks for doing this. It would be cool to do a base/mid range model comparison at some point. It seems like most comparisoins are with the loaded expensive versions.
The Toyota Grand Highlander is available as a hybrid.
Saving gas in this day and age should be of major value. I didn't hear if the Palisade has an available hybrid engine. I will search to see.
Excellent review. Thank you for taking car seats into consideration.
The Pilot is one Accord-infotainment screen away from greatness 😅 Would honestly pick the Honda over the Kia/Hyundai and most especially the VW. Prefer the Nissan over the VW too.
I am in the market for a 3 row as well and that is the only factor holding me back.
Garbage outdated interior needs to go too along with the infotainment
Pilot is the most ugly in this comparo. Hahahah. 😂
The Telluride is the best one hands down. I like the interior and exterior design much better plus the ride in the Telluride is superior to the Palisade according to reviewers (quieter interior). The GH looks very cheap and bland interior wise and the only power train which I’m more interested in is the Hybrid Max and that is more than $60k which puts it at close to $10k grand more than the Telluride. One thing I really like about the GH that I would like the Telluride to implement on their redesign is a panoroof.
Telluride is junk
Telluride is a masterpiece.
@@JohnLee-tb3nh nah junk is the name
Mazda CX-90 Turbo Premium Plus should have been in this review despite what you said about it not having enough sales. It definitely has the gas mileage and driving engagement that the Ascent lacks plus it also has a luxurious interior.
When u guys do these comparisons, u guys should take into account the reliability of these vehicles. That's something that gets overlooked in a lot of these comparisons. VW would've been in last place if that was the case lol. Or the Korean cars 😂
Korean ones are twice as reliable as the competition. They come with legendary 10-year 100,000-mile warranty. Twice the competition's.
@@JohnLee-tb3nhWarranty length does not equal reliability.
Reliability = how seldom / frequently things go wrong i.e. can one rely on the car to do what it’s supposed to whenever you need it to?
Warranty length = until when the dealer will repair the stuff that goes wrong, for free.
If Toyota dropped their warranty down to 6 months, the car would still be the most reliable one to own. Conversely, just because a Hyundai has 10-year warranty it says nothing about how often things go wrong with it and needs to visit the dealer over those 10 years. There have been horrific stories about Genesis (luxury Hyundai) owners not being able to get warranty repair appointments from the dealer.
Well you said that you couldn’t have them all of them there but it’s not like you haven’t driven them before so it would seem that you could mention where you think they would sit in your line up if you had them.
Not a good enough excuse. So, the Ford Explorer is not one of the most popular? You should have included the Grand Cherokee L and Mazda CX-90 and Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango. Also sure you knew the new GMC triplets were coming out. Should have waited.
Atlas for me love the updated interior
Forgot to mention the car seat friendly tilt in the Atlas and also the fact that you could get seconnd row bench in the top trim.
What I did not like about the Palisade is that even it top trim it does not come with auto folding rear view mirrors and also the top trims do not come with a bench seat option.
The VW atlas has always been a solid choice it was its interior in the past that held it back some but they’ve fixed that aside from the tech it’s a bit complicated but works fine once you understand it so as long as you keep proper maintenance and use oem replacement parts only you should be ok after the warranty don’t believe the hype online 💯
If you have to say it's a bit complicated, it's a serious problem for the average buyer. Last thing they want is to feel like it's an old VCR that they have to take a class on using. A simpler UI would make it a much more attractive option
It's all about looks and features . Reliability comes last.
I would like to save money and not keep buying something new and unload later. Keep for as long as i can. It's over 50k each!
Ascent and CRV have same front fake vents 😂
Grand Cherokee ? CX90 ?
Just brought vw atlas exceline loved every bit of it from handling, interior, mileage. Ppl who are bashing vw are the ones who have owned or driven vw atlas before.
Where is the 2024 Acura MDX? My wife and I use it to take our kids to school and other events. After dropping them off, we enjoy driving on the twisty mountain roads here in Southern California. Our 3 row SUV, the MDX A Spec with SH-AWD and a front double wishbone suspension, is perfect for this. It handles like a sport sedan, offering both fun and safety. The handling is comparable to German cars, and it has a reliable V6 engine. The only downside is its fuel efficiency. I know it's a family hauler but it does not have to drive like a yacht. The new Mazda CX 90 is missing as well.
Any comments about 2 liter turbo inline 4 engine in VW atlas. Several other models from VW group have complains regarding engine oil consumption.
VW also mentions about it in their owners manual, they expect owners to check engine oil when you fill gas.
I would disagree with this ranking, Atlas should be the #1 winner, the fact that you guys gave it a second place below the Plisade because of the cabin noise actually surprises me, I test-drove both, the Atlas is far more premium, far more comfortable, and fun/easy to drive, with it's more powerful engine and low speed torque delivery it's very nimble, and guess what, Palisade was far more noisy on both wind noise and road noise, so either you are biased, or you got a faulty Atlas.
Bottom line is, I'm waiting for my Atlas in 3 weeks time 😍 .
In the world of voice controls, the Atlas does a good job offering an alternative to the touchscreen for climate and radio. "Hey Volkswagen" turn on ventilated seats....
These guys seemed to downplay reliability and focus on interior and technology. I would not agree with most of these rankings. I would want to know where the mazda cx90 ranks.
Where does the Chevy Traverse stack up now in this list?
right on the top of the list. That thing is fire, specially the Z71 or the RS depending on your tastes.
The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was not available to consider at the time of our testing, but we did recently publish a review that you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/bf7eOYYDVBY/видео.html
Spot on review. Two weeks in with my new Palisade calligraphy. Couldn’t be happier with the car. Coming from a Pilot 2019… it’s miles better than the Honda.
Thank you for the review. I disagree with Atlas and Hyundai being on the top, but I also understand that this is just perspective from the three of you as you saw fit. We understand that no review would have 100% compliance with the viewers, so that's not an issue for me. We agree to disagree. But one thing we all can agree on is the multitude of choices available in this specific segment of vehicles.
Does Aaron know how to connect phones to cars? He struggled connecting to MULTIPLE cars and dinged them for what appears to be user error.
We'll ask him
I would buy a hybrid Highlander but you can't find it at my local dealers.
I find it very strange that many of the points you called out on the Hyundai the Kia actually has as well. Also, the SX Prestige costs significantly less than the Caligraphy so it is odd to see those two separated by two vehicles.
the mitsubishi outlander should be on here...
Big miss not having the MAZDA CX90! Arguably the best one on the market. Title of the video is The best 3-row Suv of 2024 not the most popular….
What about Mazda cx90?
No traverse is a huge bummer
I wish the Ford Explorer got reviewed too
The biggest issue with palisade, and I wish I they call out is the reliability and security issue total deal breaker
It comes with legendary 10-year 100,000-mile warranty. Twice the competition's. So Twice as reliable as competition. Remember, tell the dealership, if you can't guarantee the longevity of your product for 10 years like Hyundai, forget it junk dealer, I am going to Hyundai-Kia.
@@JohnLee-tb3nh , having a long warranty does not mean the car is reliable. Can't drive a car if it is in the shop all the time. A quick google search about Hyndai/Kia engine failure and easy to steal can confirm what i am saying.
Palisade doesn’t have security issue, nor reliability problems.
Read the owner reviews… the 10 yr warranty is a joke. They refuse to honor it in many cases. One had been waiting for months on the Kia to get it back fixed. Lemon law? Nope they refused it. Now the person had to get a lawyer. Buy a Toyota … Honda.

What is this obsession with “small screens?” How big do people want these screens to be, especially when you’re supposed to be looking at the road? Also, most people are probably just gonna pick up kids and go to Target in these vehicles anyway. How often are they actually gonna be looking at the screen, especially if there’s a head up display? 🤨
I’ll take the Atlas!!!!!!
Grand Highlander is by far the best 👑
Mazda has some beautiful interiors.
The CX-90 has a better interior, better driving feel and less space for larger families. My choice.

They don’t have to be too big too
Mazda CX-90! A much better car...its 3rd Row sucks though
In fact, VW Atlas and Traverse are the only two choices if you wanna a car with an actual 3rd row (for adults) and not an "emergency/kids row".
This comparison might be the most faulty comparison on RUclips. Just throwing random things in air. For example, handling of Pilot for low score (lol), almost ALL auto reviewers including auto engineers gave Pilot one of best rating on handling and ride quality. And then Grand highlander hybrid in comparison with gas vehicles (?) 😂 What you guys were thinking
where is Mazda 😢 way bettwr than Palisades most comfortable ride 🤔 not in list? 😮
Toyota all the way❤❤
Trashing the atlas infotainment and it’s super loud but made 2nd? No way
There were many things we liked about the Atlas, including comfort, powertrain, handling and cargo volume. You can see how it stacks up against the competition in table-form here: www.cars.com/articles/whats-the-best-3-row-suv-for-2024-481470/
Best 3rd row convo without the including the traverse is an absolute joke.

This is absolutely ridiculous. You have obviously been paid by VW and Hyundai. There is no way you would ever pay your own money for either of those vehicles.
Reliability must not have been one of your considerations based on your picks.
Very sad, but I know not to waste any time watching any of your other videos.

Palisade and Telluride is a waste of money. What happen to Chevy, Ford and others. Still I prefer american brand SUV rather than all this foreign brand.
GARBAGE. Atlas 2 ? If it is actually 2 how much Atlas have been sold? Just pure GARBAGE
i would say hyundai pallisade shouldnt be in top 2 because of the amount of problems all hyundai's and general have like doors flying open etc. I belive the grand highlander should be first because hyundai has too many issues to make your year go without going to the dealership at least 10 times for just recalls. Real family car is Reliable and Comfort and the grand highlander has that
VW is the worst out of 7 vehicle, depreciate the most, less reliable and yet is second highest. I doubt it is as good as you guys claims. Is 2024, we will see who is better in 2029 out of all those 7 SUV
