  • This is a Motormouth couple car video listing our Top-5 Mid-size, 3-Row SUVs.
The 2024 Honda Pilot has a3 .5L V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. In Canada, standard AWD. In the US FWD and AWD options are available.
JD Power gives the 2024 Honda Pilot an overall score of 84/100 and Consumer Reports 77/100.
The 2024 Hyundai Palisade has a 3.8L V6 engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada. In the US, FWD and AWD options are available.
JD Power gives the 2024 Hyundai Palisade an overall score of 81/100 and Consumer Reports 83/100.
The 2024 Kia Telluride has a 3.8L V6 engine with an 8 speed automatic transmission, 291 horsepower and 262 lb-feet of torque, standard AWD in Canada. FWD and AWD options in the US.
JD Power gives the 2024 Kia Telluride an overall score of 83/100 and Consumer Reports 84/100.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has two gas powertrain options both with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The high output 3.3L inline 6 turbo has 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. You can put regular fuel in this model but you’ll get a little less horsepower, torque number stays the same.
There is also the standard engine in the 2024 Mazda CX-90, it is the same 3.3L inline 6 turbo but with less power, 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Standard rear-biased AWD.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-in hybrid has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. You can use regular fuel but the horsepower drops a little to 319 horsepower, the torque number stays the same.
JD Power has not yet rated the 2024 Mazda CX-90 but Consumer Reports gives it an overall score of 82/100.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and 2024 Toyota Highlander have a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 264 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada. In the US, FWD and AWD options are available. The second powertrain option on the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and 2024 Toyota Highlander s a 2.5L 4-cylinder Hybrid matched to an eCVT with a combined 243 horsepower, standard AWD.
The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander also has a more powerful Hybrid Max model with a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 362 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD. You can put regular fuel in the Grand Highlander and Highlander.
JD Power gives the 2024 Toyota Highlander an overall score of 80/100 and Consumer Reports 79/100. The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander hasn’t been rated yet.
The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse is all new with excellent cargo capacity, it seats up to 8-passengers, it’s one of the biggest in this class. The interior is all up to date with a standard 17.7” diagonal infotainment display and a new 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, we look forward to driving it soon.
The 2024 Dodge Durango is a comfortable handling vehicle, it’s spacious, the seats are supportive for long drive, there’s plenty of cargo space and the Uconnect touchscreen is intuitive to use. It has excellent towing capacity but the fuel economy isn’t great.
The 2024 Subaru Ascent offers great value, it has a lot of trim options where they offer captain’s chairs or a bench seat. It’s comfortable and offers an open cabin with a comfortable seating position. Fuel economy isn’t great on this model and some complain about the drowny sound of the CVT.
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is an excellent vehicle for space, one of the biggest in this class along with the Traverse and Grand Highlander. There is just one powertrain option now, gone is the V6, but we found the turbocharged 4-cylinder to be good. The updated interior is much improved with less hard plastic compared to the previous model.

I took delivery of a Mazda CX90 PHEV GT at the end of August and it suits me. I wasn't looking for a big carry-all vehicle but more of something with a little more room than a 2 row and I liked the plug-in feature for putzing around town, which is most of what I do. I know you have talked about the CX90 transmission not shifting the best but I haven't noticed anything. Then again I don't drive it like a sports car, because, you know, it isn't, but I do find the CX90 does handle well for a vehicle of this size. I am happy with my purchase but for sure if you are looking for the roomiest vehicle (or close to it) in this class there are others to look at.

I just purchased the new Honda Pilot Elite, and truly the only critique I can give is the infotainment screen could be larger to keep up with the other competitors in it's class and a redesign on it's graphics/layout within the infotainment. Ditch the primary colours on the apps, but that is just a little nitpick. I personally am a fan that they kept the V6. All in all, this three row SUV feels well rounded, functional, and luxurious!

The 3rd row in most of these is quite tight, but the big trend in the last decade has been for families ditching the more utilitarian minivan for the more "sexy" SUV look... In my opinion, the Grand Highlander is the way to go if you want space, efficiency and overall reliability. I still think that the minivan is the best choice for large families. Cheers!

This is what I thought until I’ve done my own research. I don’t care about exterior at all. I bought a Pilot, not an Odyssey, because I watched FMVSS301 of minivans and saw the third is generally not safe enough as the seat would crumble and collapse to the second row.

When covering vehicles this size, and most with automatic transmission, there is a high probability the buyer pkans to tow something. Perhaps you could throw in tow rating right after torque rating. I tow a 21 ft boat. I would go for the Honda or Mazda myself, but primarily on looks. I might change my mind after test driving them all. Nice review.

Although I think 6-cylinder is an absolute necessary in this kind of heavy vehicle, I am intrigued by Toyota's Hybrid Max system. I test drove all a month ago. I owned a mazda and that was my trade in. CX90 offers the best engines overall but space wise lacking big time. Toyota GH felt very cheap but that Hybrid Max was fun. I was ended up getting a 24 calligraphy Palisade with beige interior. I couldn’t justify paying $6000 more for the Toyota and Mazda. Especially Mazda would be a tough choice if you have two kids and a dog.

I have a CPO '23 pathfinder Platinum with only 10k miles. Roomy, powerful and rides well. I personally think it's got more than 284. I has been in the shop for three issues.
    1. Memory seat module went bad
    2. Front collision system needed a new sensor and camera
    3. Fuel pump went out
    4. The actual mirror on the driver's side had to be re-mounted
    5. The clock seems to have a mind of it's own
    6. Replaced the tires since there were a couple of tears in the Bridgestone's sidewall
This is Certified. I would liked to have been a fly on the wall when it went through inspection. I'm going to see where I am at and try to pick up a '24 Acadia. Glad it's still under warranty.

If I were in the market for a 6 or 7-seater with a 3rd row that can at least seat a shorter adult comfortably and still have practical boot space behind the third row, I would go for a minivan, rather than an SUV as my vehicle of choice. Something like Honda Odessey, Hyundai iMax, Kia Carnival, Volkswagen Caddy, Toyota Tarago would be in the mix, maybe even LDV MIFA if I'm feeling lucky or the Merc V class if I won the lottery.

The only thing that holds me back on Toyota is the mediocre awd systems. The grand Highlander I hear is better on at least some trim(s) but that’s bigger than I want. I’m leaning more compact-ish and probably looking at an RDX or Outlander previous. Or possibly give in to temptation and get a 23 gx460 to enjoy the last of a breed for a while before moving to EVs.

Thanks again for that informative yet engaging review. I came away with a new direction. After careful review it appears that the Grand Highlander Limited is the best value. For a few thousand more than the Highlander, and the same price for others, you get a big bang for the buck plus the Toyota longevity and reliability. I will think more in that direction. Again, thanks.

I like the way Hyundai/Kia/Genesis implement their interior/infotainment controls...IMHO better than any other manufacturer. I wish the Santa Fe had a better engine than the 2.5 Turbo Ice..but I think it's likely adequate. The tech top to bottom in the Caligraphy is awesome. I know these are not out in NA yet but have you guys been able to check this vehicle out yet? I would love your feedback.

I just drove the new Telluride, Santa Fe and Palisade. The driving features, screen design and ease of drive is amazing in all of them, unfortunately I wasn’t a fan of the outside looks of these cars. I found them too “boxy”. I was looking for more sophisticated. curves and trims. In that area, the Palisade is probably the best.

I've been looking at these models lately, and it seems all the 3rd rows just lay down flat. Not removable. I think if one un-bolted the 3rd row, you would have a large cavity inn the back as the seats lay down flush.

Can the average growing family actually afford an over $50,000 vehicle? Personally, by the time I could actually afford an over $50,000 SUV … my children had ‘finally’ gone to Uni (university)… and that was (finally…) this past September. As a growing family can have ridiculous expenses (trips, sports, cottaging, amusement parks, etc… Food!), I could only really afford ‘used’ Estate cars (station wagons) and a minivan (to which I loved!). But then again, maybe it was because owned my vehicles outright (no lease/finance). To each their own l suppose… Thanks for the video.

A vehicle should never be more than 10% of your monthly income. And with the average car payment of $729 (in Americaland as of today) that’d work out to $87,000 USD… BEFORE insurance, maintenance and fuel! Which families (even dual income!) can afford those amounts?!? After all… we cannot forget about taxes (including property), heat (A/C), food, entertainment, kid’s sports, property maintenance/improvements, clothing, appliances or even food!! Money doesn’t exactly grow on trees… at least not in my neighbourhood.!

Bench seat is fine, we had one with our 2016 Pilot. Traded in for a 24 Palisade Night Calligraphy for the 2nd row captain's chairs for the usability of the 3rd row. Wife didn't want a minivan and didn't want a full size SUV so our choice was simple. Test drove the new Pilot, wanted to like it, sadly, I found the driving experience boring and the acceleration was somehow slower than our 2016. Strange because they switched from SOHC to DOHC specifically for the power but offset by significant increase in weight. We had problems with our Pilot anyway. Will see how the Hyundai goes, it's our first.

I expected to love the Grand Highlander, and the Hybrid Max drove great, but once I actually felt the finishes I started looking elsewhere. We ended up with a Telluride. The classy look of the brown leather interior really tipped the scale. Way to sneak 10 vehicles into a top 5 list!
