I think the more old-school aspect of this truck will attract certain truck buyers that still enjoy that. Interesting that it's using a similar styled front door "cut-in" similar to the F150 for better visibility.
FYI: the "new" frontier actually sits on a modified version of the old frontier's frame. I guess if it isn't broken, don't fix it. The engine and transmission are carry overs from the 2020 frontier on which they debuted. The steering wheel is from the Titan, not the pathfinder.
@@Fir-jp3jt sometimes that’s a good idea though. Look what happened when they tried “fixing” hard buttons and knobs by replacing them with touch screens.
"a lot"? Which "new trucks" have you driven that seem like a mini van? All the trucks are body on frame except the Ridgeline. Can you give us some examples?
@@drn13355 He's right. A lot of new trucks feel like driving a minivan. Take the F-150 Platinum. It even has a V6 like a minivan. Granted its twin turbo but it still feels and sounds like a minivan engine. It even rides and handles like a minivan. The upper trims of the Ram are a similar story. They feel really isolated from the road, boring to drive and loaded full of leather and screens. The new Tundra might as well be a Highlander. Even the Silverado has gotten really cushy, dull, and GMC Acadia-feeling.
@@sunshinelolipops1 "Take the F-150 Platinum. It even has a V6 like a minivan." Isn't this Nissan a V6? It's a naturally aspirated V6, no less. Just like a minivan? Are you complaining that new trucks don't shake and rattle with enough driveline shudder and suspension bounce? I'm confused what the problem is with new trucks.
As someone who owned a 2007 Nissan Frontier se 4x4, I have used and abused this truck with almost 200,000 miles. It’s such a great truck and I’m honestly considering a brand new one soon because of this! Truly great trucks compared to the competitors
They should just stop and use buttons on the dash or something. All these electric razor shifters do is take up space, look silly and are fundamentally unnecessary.
For how terribly outdated the dashboard looks, I like the fact they incorporated a hard button to dim the main screen. So helpful when driving late at night rather than having to find it somewhere within the settings
I like it. Looks like a truck. But still is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay less chunky looking then the Tacoma interior. It’s the perfect balance of square truck that’s still rounded enough.
The old school feel is exactly what I love about these. I worked at Nissan during the development of these and I instantly fell in love the first time I drove one. Its not the most technolgically advanced or sophisticated but in a world of high tech appliance cars, I find this so refreshing.
I agree. I’m currently on my third tacoma , but this is the first truck I’d seriously consider buying over a Toyota and that’s a big deal. I think sometimes Doug looks for racehorses in cars designed to be packmules if that makes sense. This truck is designed exactly right for the person that will buy them.
Agreed. They updated it just as much as it needed. I just want a simple truck with modern safety features. It's funny when reviewers complain about something not _looking_ or _feeling_ new just for the sake of being new.
@@ThatOneDudeNick and consumers complain it doesn't vastly outperform the current model (that they are still paying off, but fully intend on just rolling that debt along to get) by several hundred pounds of payload, towing and 50 horsepower. Then they take to online and complain "Ford your new ranger is the size of my old F-150! I just wanted better Towing and Payload!" As if the strength and weight of steel and the laws of physics just changed because a callander ticked over and a new vehicle launched.
I agree with Doug, I definitely think this is the best looking of the modern midsized trucks. There's one on a road I drive fairly regularly and I always find myself glancing at it as I drive by.
This is my dream truck, I have an older frontier and I absolutely love it. I love the rugged body on frame style. To me it’s the way a truck should feel. Reminds me of the old Toyota and Nissan trucks from the early 90s, small but sturdy and well built
I don't even have a license or a real need for a truck anytime soon (although I'd definitely try camping in one) this would be my go to, I've always liked retro trucks like the hardbody, I'd definitely do a single or extended cab retro build, like the hardbody build that Nissan showed off, the single cab on some tri-spokes and other retro stuff would be awesome! Plus this isn't too over the top like other trucks, it still looks sorta boxy and reasonable, I love the styling and simplicity.
@@martincruz3907 yep, I found that Nissans are just more reliable than the ole ranger I tell ya hwat. I can get to them propane emergencies much faster
@Dizzy Gear you DO know all these electronic shifters have a little cap you can pop off and manually move the shifter to N for exactly that reason, don’t you?
I’ve actually been seeing quite a few of these on the road. Doug once again forgetting that not everyone is 6’4 so the vast majority of people will have plenty of leg room on the back seat.
For all its outdated and new features, they did get one area right. They didn't upgrade the touch screen area into a massive glass panel with no physical buttons, proven to be both distracting for drivers and a safety hazard when pure touch screen. Props for that, it is, after all suppose to be a practical pickup.
@@mrvwbug4423 the Frontier is not Tundra sized, tho. Tundra matches the size of the F150, Silverado, Ram and Titan, so a larger screen wouldn't hurt a big cabin too much.
This is officially my new favorite smaller truck. Seems like the perfect blend of new and old school! The price is a bit much, but that’s the way the market is right now.
Will he notice the Porsche that appears at 18:06? YES…at 18:16. He doesn’t miss a beat in his conversation while micro scanning it like a terminator. True car guy!
If “It ain’t much but it’s honest work” was a truck basically. There’s a lot of old school guys who like the simplicity and old roots the new Frontier provides , I’m a Toyota guy but honestly this thing provides enough for it to do what it was built to do… just a plain ol body on frame truck.
@@H.E.PennyPackr can't speak for yourself. you might actually fit a Tacoma better on your needs. But I believe as a rule of thumb, most trucks are over specced for the majority of drivers. There is an insane number of people out there that don't need an F-150 but still decide to get one. They don't go off road, they dont tow up to 12,000 lbs (as advertised). Heck most of them don't tow period. But they are stuck with the big uncomfortable to drive truck in the city, spending a ton more on gas. I used to tow a little utility trailer with my Hyundai Elantra for years. Ridgeline covers my needs fully. It has the biggest cabin in its class and it drives the nicest on its class. I had the Tacoma when I was 23 and it was the best thing ever. But I could never imagine using now that I am 34 to transport my kids or go to work. Ridgeline fits my 2 kids with car seats perfectly. The bed is way more usable than all other trucks and the in bed trunk is gift from God. Especially if you are in construction and you have muddy equipment. Wash it off open the tap and let it drain. Best choice ever. Test drove f150s and didn't like the way they drive in town. Nice on the highway.
@@gamatoutsikos That’s an honest assessment of the truck market. Part of me wishes the Ridgeline was a little more capable (I tow 5k pounds regularly with my Grand Cherokee) but that would probably take away from what it’s best at and that’s light duty transportation with the occasional truck stuff rather than the other way around. That being said, when I do finally get a truck, I’m probably getting a 2500hd for work and trading the Grand Cherokee in for the new Honda Passport Trailsport.
I traded my 2011 Frontier for this one, and man, let me tell you, this thing is leaps and bounds better than the older model. So much quieter, and the suspension is way better. As a short guy, the 2 inches higher bed sucks. haha! I can't reach things very well, anymore. Also, the turning radius is much improved! The old one was like turning around in a WW2 battleship. I like the noise of the engine. Yes, I want that! I want to feel like I'm in a truck. The start button is in a weird place, and you have to get used to it, but mine also has remote start, which is a huge plus here in the PA winters.
Just curious how much did you trade your 11 in for? I bought a 15 a couple years ago and it currently has 35k miles. I love it so much but man do I love the new frontier a little more
Old School is this case might be a good thing. Bought my 07 Frontier new in part due to what struck me as a simple no-nonsense inside and outside design. Turned out to be a good choice and the V6 just keeps humming along. Fourteen years of normal maintenance, couple of sensors replaced, and just last week the airbag light came on. Otherwise the interior looks great as does the exterior after all this time, and start-ups are instant, and it simply does it's job.
Yep. Nissan knew what people love about it and decided to just modernize it without changing it. They made a good old truck for people who wanted a truck.
Doug mocking, hating and nagging about this TRUCK is the best ad for the new Nissan Frontier! I want a truck to feel like a truck. Love the combination of old-school, tried and true features. $80 grand for a truck with air suspension and all the bells and whistles that I’ll never use and I’d be too afraid to take off road seems like a waste to me.

Yes. But all off road worthy, luxury, or sports cars do not perform as well until manufacturers throw a ton of gloss black plastic and remove hard buttons. I am sick of this trend but no end in sight.
I blame it on bean-counters looking at stats. Over 80% of car-buying decisions are influenced by women. What do many (not all) women want in a car? Comfort, practicality, easy to drive, easy to park, capability, etc. That translates into those swoopy crossovers and family mobiles.
With the new Frontier pretty much out, I really hope they think about bringing back the Xterra, using the existing components from this truck. Just basically converting this truck into SUV form.
Doug nailed it. I traded my 19 sr 2wd 4 cylinder tacoma for a 22 pro4x. I love the added tech and the look. I also love the fact its a truck. It has the creature comforts I enjoy but I also feel like I'm driving an acrual truck because, well... I like trucks.
I've been actively researching getting a truck for years, and just recently bought the Frontier Pro-4X which is my first ever pickup truck. I really wanted a Tacoma, but the sacrifices to match the price point of the fully loaded Pro-4X for a Tacoma made no sense to me. A fully loaded TRD-Pro Tacoma, is north of $70k, for a MID-SIZED PICKUP! Nothing the Tacoma offers warrants a $28-32k price increase over the Frontier. Everything Doug says is 100% valid, and as an owner, I can confirm all of it, and are there features or certain aspects I wish were "better", absolutely. But at $43k and change, I'm 1,000% happy with my purchase.

We have one of the older Frontiers for work, it’s a 2014. I’m a contractor for the forest service so we beat the dog sh*t out of our vehicles. The Tacoma is kinda the gold standard for us. However I have to admit, that Nissan thing is *extremely* capable off road. Even with stock suspension and mediocre tires.
Those frontiers are pretty well set up for offroad in what I've felt. The clearances and angles are just good enough. The sv had some fat tires and small rims which allowed for decent traction with cheap all terrains. And the truck itself had some decent traction control, I could only imagine with a pro 4x and softer suspension and a bit more clearance. It was the first year of 2nd Gen frontier so basically the same thing with uglier rims. Those weird 4 spoke rim things. Not sure if it was the factory rims but it was some ugly Nissan rims
@@redlinearroyo847 The Tacoma and Frontier are fairly similar in every aspect. The only difference in performance is from the factory suspension options. A factory Tacoma does just a bit better off road thanks to the nicer suspension components.
I’m using my 2022 as primary transportation and carrying tools and whatever for real estate purposes. I went to look at a foreclosure and I misjudged the driveway and went into the drain hole. I thought I totaled it. I was at a 90 degree angle in the ditch. I put it in 4 wheel low and backed out of the ditch. Not even a scratch underneath had Firestone check under the truck no issues. I saw some clumps of dirt and grass. And 25 mpg mixed!
The Tacoma, and the Nissan are body on frame, which make them much “tougher” than the car based Maverick and Santa Cruz, hence the ride quality. The Rivian and Hunmer ride on battery packed underpinnings that also cause it to ride more “car like”. In the end, in choosing a truck for heavy duty workloads, I would choose on built body on frame, despite the ride quality.
Ride quality has nothing to do with wether or not a vehicle is body on frame, until 1992 Rolls Royces were body on frame. Its all about suspension. Suspension that can handle more weight (payload) doesn't compress as easily leading to a harsher ride.
The Maverick and Santa Cruz aren’t midsized trucks either, so that is a weird comparison. Granted the Santa Cruz at least costs similar but the Maverick is way cheaper.
I've owned a 2001 and a 2003 Frontier, all purchased brand new. In February I picked up my new 2022 SV 4x4. I love it. It rides really nice and has enough tech to keep me happy.
Ive owned a ‘21 Tacoma SR5 and I traded it in on the new Frontier and wasn’t disappointed at all, the Frontier rides and handles better, it also has a rear sway bar which helps with the handling. The Nissan will walk away from the Tacoma for sure and out tow it as well! As part of the Convenience package the Frontier came with remote start which isn’t even available on the Tacoma. The heated steering wheel and seats are a must in northern states. If you’re contemplating buying a Tacoma be sure to test drive the Nissan as well!
How does it compare to the Tacoma in terms of reliability and longevity? Im torn between the 2, I want the Frontier but I trust the Tacomas to get me 200k+
The “old school” mechanical controls were used because they have tested reliability for remote world use where there isn’t a dealership repair center in every town. Any shade tree mechanic can fix the shifter linkage, but won’t have to because it won’t break. The drive by wire shifter in the Pathfinder needs a more complex ECM and probably more chips that are unobtanium.
@@yungboicontigo9278 Toyota of a few years ago they were great, but since 2018 is been non stop, crank bearings(pretty much any truck running 0w20 oil spec), axle splines shearing off under high load, electric/wiring harness defects and cheap plastic clips holding most of the body work. Still has the same frame and mechanics of the old truck which I like. I also love how simple and old school they have kept it. I’m upset they ditched the roof rack. It gave it a more of a global look.
I love the steering wheel I have to say. The turn signal and windshield wiper stalks, I say if they’re not broken don’t fix em. However, I’m kind of stunned how bad the rear view camera is here. My car is a 2007 infiniti, was built about 16 years ago, and the rear view camera is perfect. It’s very clear and the guidelines for the rear wheels are spot on.
I have never understood why he complains about old wiper stalks…who cares? If they work, they work. Why make a brand new part that’s adding cost to the new vehicle? New for the sake of new is part of why our consumer society has so many problems.
@@moist_ointment I'm guessing that you don't work on cars or trucks. The more vehicles that use the same parts makes replacement parts easier to find and keeps the cost down. Why design a unique part just for the sake of having a new part?

I managed to get a door open and crawl out, but not crippled and not a ghost. I looked it up and sure enough the Frontier had excellent rollover protection rating. This is easily the best mid-sized truck on the market today. Everything you need in the modern day without any of the hyper expensive/unreliable bs. Truly the last of its kind.
Also to be fair with Nissan they were on the verge of going bankrupt so for them to pull out new cars (especially the Z) is pretty impressive. I’m not saying using old parts is okay but they were in a bad place
Gladly they've cut ties with the French so hopefully Nissan gets back on track, I don't see them going back to their Nissan/Datsun quality levels... But man, that would be the coolest thing ever
@@isaac4273 I sure hope they do I’m rooting for them! They need to cut ties with the cvt. No matter how much they improve people just simply have a bad rep of them you know? I like how it’s still kinda a old school truck , less things to break and hey if it works then why change it ? Leave it alone just like the tundra , it was a more old school truck but extremely reliable and everything works so why change it ? I like this frontier 👍🏻
No joke the emergency reverse breaking really does work. I work at a Nissan dealership and when these things first released we had them stored away until it was release day. I was backing out a forest green sv and when I was half way out a van pulled up behind us asking to take a look at them without thinking how close he pulled up, the reverse breaking saved me from having to replace the tail end of a new frontier. 10/10 greatful.
I purchased a 2023 Frontier and I love it. Have almost 5k on it, purchase end of July. Ride is nice, gas mileage is way better than my Tacoma was. I did not want a turbo, and appreciate the analog tac and speedometer. Everything just works.
Love your videos Doug, you make good points about some nice to have features like a telescoping steering, but I think Nissan has done a great job of introducing new features and technologies that are very convenient and also safety conscious while still keeping this truck relatively affordable compared to a fully loaded and cramped Tacoma or a full size truck which are running in the $60k or above now.
@@yungboicontigo9278 the R35 GTR isn’t a very profitable car they have their volume sellers to be more concerned with right now if anything we’re lucky it still exists at this point
I dig it. I don't need a bunch of fancy stuff. But there's no excuse for not having a telescoping steering wheel. My 11 year old Altima had a telescoping wheel. It'd be nice if it had better cameras but I just need to know something is there. Regarding the looks of the Pro-4X, I'm glad they didn't do anything corny like a fake hood vent or camo pattern plastic...
I was test driving frontiers a few years ago but I couldn’t get over the cramped cabin. Like Doug, my knee was IN the dash because that dumb steering wheel didn’t telescope. I ended up stepping up to a Titan and it was sooo much more comfortable to drive. Can’t believe they made the same mistake again regarding the steering wheels. They’ll definitely lose sales over it.
I love the fact that a work truck is not overcrowded with screens and touch buttons, relatively I’m not too old but I I like the fact this truck still offering analogue options.
Pro-X model is probably more for the Baja style truck people Doug. I have a 2wd Ranger Sport with a torsion suspension up front (Xl&XLT came with coils) and that's the go to for that style of truck. Some people also want the look of having 4wd but not have to pay 5k more for a transfer case they will use 2 times a year
We just went and looked at these as well as the other trucks like it. The Tacoma had the worst rear seat room, while the Frontier had the best rear seat room. Not saying much as you can see.
I can tell you it's bad, my dad has one and I often have to ride in the back, with my brothers. It is tight has hell, and we're not even past 5'10 or 11
Cool Truck... but it's $45k. Have we lost our minds! I get they wanna remove extra frills and maintain that hardened rugged feel and that's great, but it should be reflected in the price. Idk when this whole trend of the new average vehicle being $40k+ started, but it needs to end. If people think this is worth the price, we gotta talk lol!
28k for the base model yes it cost a lot when you add the top trim level and the leather seats. But that’s what the market goes for. I don’t really think they need to sell them at that price they probably look at the Tacoma and say we will give you 30 more hp for that price.
I think its cool that, the tech they did add is actually very useful for construction / truck users. Heated seat & wheel is great for the cold. All the safety equipment is a huge plus for a business owner wanting a fleet. Watching this review I was just thinking "you can use most of this truck with gloves on".. something you cant say about most modern cars.
Of course Doug would compare this to a Rivian 🙄 I love it! The design, the "Nissan-ness" about it, the hints of OG Hardbody on the exterior.. all it needs is a manual, and I think those 310 ponies would have a much more spirited trot to them. Had I not just bought a 4Runner for pretty much the same (but parallel because Toyota) reasons I'm digging on the Frontier, I would've gotten one of these. Well done, Nissan!
The fact that it looks and feels like a "proper" truck is probably going to be its best selling point. Comparing the Frontier to all the unibody "trucks", (Maverick, Santa Cruz, etc,) for interior space or ride feel isn't a fair comparison. :/
He's saying how small the Frontier interior is compared to *smaller* trucks. Meaning the Frontier is not only small for its class, but small compared to *smaller* trucks. The Ranger's interior is smaller than the Maverick's, but still larger than the Frontier.
Yup, this really bothered me. Those things are probably less capable than for purpose utes. Utes aren't trucks, regardless of body, bed. But here we are, lies sell better, so wagons play ugly dress up as SUVs, cars dressed up as trucks. A real truck being compared unfairly to car ride cush and turbos, only fit for shortening engine lifespan, because fools rush in.
"All the unibody trucks".... just two. The real competition here is the tacoma, ranger and colorado. I get it, an old school truck has its charm... but they're charging you like a new truck with new tech. The old feeling is not by design, it's because there's not much research. The body is heavy. The engine is old school so the I guess the mileage is not great. Those advancements matter. That's why the Ranger's 2.4 4cyl feels faster than this and is more fuel efficient.
So I test drove a 2022 SV with leather and upgraded stereo. It was as quiet driving as a Ridgeline at speed which most reviewers note. The Engine was a little noisy still but the ride was much better than my 2009 Frontier. Mine has 150K now and still not a single rattle which testifies to the durability as you noted. The 2022 huge hood obstructs the forward view a bit.
I think the market needs a rough and ready truck with heated seats. You get the reliability of a Nissan truck but some modern comforts that make the commute better. It's not a home run, but it's a solid truck.

Toyota did the Prerunner Tacoma that was the same as the Pro X. Guys who want to look cool, but never leave the pavement. I own a Toyota and have driven them exclusively for 35 years. I test drove a '22 Frontier, and I can admit, it's quieter, and more comfortable than my Toyota. It has hydraulic steering that I like a lot because it gives better road feel.
GM is a major culprit here. They ditched the column shifter in the 2022 Silverado and replaced it with an electronic shifter. I'm not sure if a lot of people complained about the column shifter.
@@damilolaakanni They didn't. Column shifters are almost perfect ergonomically, even in the finger-operated variant Tesla uses (amazing considering the rest of their interiors are ergonomic nightmares)
I was looking for a new mid size truck and set a budget of $40k. I went and test drove a frontier, ranger, Tacoma and Colorado all around the same price point and the frontier was by far the best option at that price. It rides and drives better than all the others and has way more features for the price. Also the interior quality is way better. Comparing the ride quality to two crossovers with beds and two trucks that are over $100k seems pointless. Of course the $40k truck was more harsh to drive.
@@Bolek989 I bought a frontier proX. The Tacoma was nice, it was the one I wanted before I drove the frontier. The Tacoma driving position is more like a crossover than a truck and the infotainment is pretty bad.
What model frontier did you end up getting with your 40k budget? My budget will be the same and I'm hoping it's enough to have a crew cab with 4wd after tt&l.
@@xfiringsquadx I got a proX in Baja storm with tech and convenience packages. I didn't need 4wd, the most off-road I'll go is dirt roads. You will definitely be able to get what you are looking for, honestly you could probably get a pro4x with no extra packages for that price or a damn near load 4x4 SV.
maaan the whole old school Nissan frontier is cool though! I think the mix of old and new features is the best way to make some money quick and also brining back some drivers who just want a simple. rugged, and cheaper truck to drive.
My 2008 pathfinder (originally came out in 2005) has the same 4WD selector, seat warmer buttons, window switches, door locks and handles as this truck. I love Nissan 😂

Now I'm just here waiting for the goddamned r36. I've started to actively hate the r35 lol. Realize now that it's not a very good looking car, at all. It's become vastly overpriced for the design, performance, and tech it offers, and it's over hyped to no end. Want an r36 so we can at least move on from the r35 a little bit.
It’s designed for functionality, does everything it needs to do. I love it . This is the only truck I’d consider buying other than a Tacoma. Which I’d have to assume is the consumer market Nissan built this for.
I’ll agree to a point. But remember, you have to pay money for this, and they aren’t $20’000 anymore. Things like the backup cam quality and resolution are just uncalled for in 2022 and no telescoping steering wheel? I don’t mind the rest, I like the old school shifter, I like physical buttons, etc, but some of this just shows they didn’t care when putting out a “new” truck.
The ranger is my pick. The new one looks beastly, and it it follows the current rangers trend of being the most reliable midsized truck, according to Consumer Reports at least, then I'll be happy.
@@watchreport you’re right , and those are good points to be sure, but no mid size truck is 20k anymore . My current Tacoma (sr5) had a 36k sticker price with arguably even LESS features than a frontier. The Ranger similarly equipped is also In the mid 30s. The tech should absolutely be better at that price range but the truth is that across the board …all options are lacking/not meeting our expectations on some level.
I really appreciate the simpler "less is more" style of the truck. Too many trucks feel like they are built for guys headed to Starbucks rather than to pick up a load of wood or going off to the job site
I drove a new Frontier. Really liked the styling, engine and the quiet cabin. But agree with you 100%. It feels old. If I'm buying something that feels old, why risk getting the first year of a new model? I went with a Tacoma.
when nissan uses an old truck graphic it's "novel" and "outdated" but slap a similar sticker on a jeep/ford and watch everyone clammer for its "heritage" and "throwback" smh
There is a difference between having your old truck outlines in the plastic molds or a tiny Jeep on the bottom of the windshield and having an old sticker you still use.
Because with other brands those types of stickers and related aspects of vehicles have been out of production for years and are brought back to match any particular models aesthetic in which are meant to be a nostalgic throwback. With Nissan that isn't the case because they're penny pinching and don't want to update it; case in point, they also used a nearly decade old steering wheel in an "all-new" vehicle. I'm not complaining though, it's a cool sticker.
Really wanted the new frontier to be good and was hopeful too with the (i think) great styling. Clearly Nissan is trying hard to make a comeback, but they certainly have a way to go if they want to get back to being a well respected brand. Heres to hoping the Z can live up to the hype!
Imo they're doing great, considering that they could've ended up as Suzuki or Mitsu. New Z, futuristic Ariya, oldschool Frontier, Nissan got smth for everyone, thats cool. Not like many other brands that go full lightbars and batteries and fuck over every other segment.
@@yungboicontigo9278 not ignored, just not prioritized. costs a ton of R & D money to make a new GTR and they sell peanuts compared to their other cars. just business
@@yungboicontigo9278 that’s literally what he said, cost too much money to research and design a car that’s not a large portion of their sales. They need to make regular cars that sell well before they dump money into a new six figure sports car. Not a priority for them when they are trying to become financially stable again.
Honestly I think Nissan nailed this one. I like an old school steering wheel and gear shift, normal gauges and climate controls, but still having the options for safety features and some of the comfort stuff
I just bought this truck for all the reasons Doug complains about lol. The old school nature was the biggest selling point for me. Also, I disagree with Doug's complaint about the engine not feeling powerful. My previous truck (traded in on the Frontier) was a 2003 Tundra w the 4.7L V8. The Frontier feels just as quick and powerful. I've owned the Frontier for 2 months now and no regrets. Chose it over the Tacoma and I'm good with that. I tow a lot and the Tacoma had a gutless engine and relentlessly shifting transmission. Vastly better drivetrain for towing with the Frontier.
But why possibly fuck up a perfectly good v6 and capable frame for a mew one. plus this keeps servicing easier for new owners and parts shouldnt shoot up bc of all the mew sensors and crap that new new vehicles demand
@@JuanGarcia-fv9ph I’m sure Nissan isn’t really in a position to make drastic changes to its assembly line so that’s most likely why they’re sticking to some older/already established designs. Maybe in the coming years after this new and impressive (for Nissan) updated fleet rollout, we’ll see bigger changes in their power trains and base platforms. Heck, they’re probably prepping for that as we speak.
I have a '15 Titan that had the same complaints about being around forever, but there's a benefit there, namely reliability. The frontiers and last gen Titans are bulletproof mostly because of the lack of whizz bang features that just become more crap to break and small tweaks to the engine and drivetrain vs huge leaps of faith every 4 yrs. I will admit 45k for that is a bit much but they will be a steal on the used market.
Yeah, the Frontier has never had the resale value of the Tacoma. I've had offers of 39k on my 2019 Tacoma from dealers despite it having 73k miles, I only paid 40k for it.
Toyotas have tons of tech in them, yet still manage to be rock solid reliable. You can have high tech and reliable if you know what you're doing and don't be cheapskates like Nissan and the US automakers.
@@mrvwbug4423 But the tundra has been blasted too for not keeping up with other trucks in terms of features, until this yr. I think Nissan waits too long but there was a time when every manufacturer went a while between major upgrades and the truck were better for it. But then again the new Titan is a turd and has all kinds of engine problems so maybe not. It's all a crap shoot at this point isn't it?
I see a great truck with plenty of room, and time for updates. I never buy the first year of a new generation anyway, gives them time to tweak it 😉. Great vid Doug!
The Pro X competes with Tacoma's PreRunner package. It makes a lot of sense to sit a bit higher to tackle lighter obstacles without having to commit to a full gas guzzling 4x4.
Is the gas consumption that much of a difference? I think you could select 4x2 in the highway and have similar gas mileage. A 4x2 offroad truck is an abomination.
so I just test drove the Sv king cab and loved the take off and just about peeled from the stop light! love power !! Love the tight steering for better control on the highway! The seats are great!
I've always liked Nissan trucks. First brand new vehicle I purchased was in Nov 1999 and it was a 2000 Nissan Frontier king cab with a 5 speed manual trans. It was a basic truck and that was exactly what I was looking for. It's too bad I don't have it anymore, it was a good, reliable truck when I owned it.

I love my frontier. My dad had one of the first frontiers for over 25 years before he sold it to a neighbor. It is still going strong. I had a 1999 model and now I own the 2022 sv.
I think the more old-school aspect of this truck will attract certain truck buyers that still enjoy that. Interesting that it's using a similar styled front door "cut-in" similar to the F150 for better visibility.

I agree. But there’s need to be a difference between old school modern analog vs cheap and lazy from Nissan.
FYI: the "new" frontier actually sits on a modified version of the old frontier's frame. I guess if it isn't broken, don't fix it. The engine and transmission are carry overs from the 2020 frontier on which they debuted. The steering wheel is from the Titan, not the pathfinder.
Lazy on Nissan's part
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is the laziest saying of all time though. We wouldn't have any newer tech in anything if nobody "fixed it".

I can’t tell you how much I like the old fashioned foot ebrake
As a person viewing this video, I approve of the design
As someone who owned a 2007 Nissan Frontier se 4x4, I have used and abused this truck with almost 200,000 miles. It’s such a great truck and I’m honestly considering a brand new one soon because of this! Truly great trucks compared to the competitors
2:45, honestly I like the old style shifter, the new ones they have on cars are just weird looking and work differently from car to car
They should just stop and use buttons on the dash or something. All these electric razor shifters do is take up space, look silly and are fundamentally unnecessary.
@@nuthinnobody3357 Maybe it's a mechanical shifter and it needs to be there.....
For how terribly outdated the dashboard looks, I like the fact they incorporated a hard button to dim the main screen. So helpful when driving late at night rather than having to find it somewhere within the settings
Yeah my 2011 Audi A5 has that. Kinda nice, be nice to turn it off altogether though at night
SAAB had it decades ago. It's a great feature. The ambient lighting on some of the new cars looks like a low budget casino
Physical buttons are better than touch screens
Physical button are the smartest comparing multiple touches for a command through touch screen.
Eh, the 2023 Ranger is going to shit on this thing.
Why don't you just keep your old truck then?
As if the strength and weight of steel and the laws of physics just changed because a callander ticked over and a new vehicle launched.
Reminds me of the old Toyota and Nissan trucks from the early 90s, small but sturdy and well built
loved my 1993 Hardbody!

For all its outdated and new features, they did get one area right. They didn't upgrade the touch screen area into a massive glass panel with no physical buttons, proven to be both distracting for drivers and a safety hazard when pure touch screen. Props for that, it is, after all suppose to be a practical pickup.

I would still take the Ridgeline over this or Tacoma.
@@gamatoutsikos Interesting. Mind explaining why? I'm actually looking at all of them as we speak. Right now I'm leaning Tacoma.

They are one of the best concerts, you can not go but just seeing them from the screen, I know it was surprising
💗❤️💌💘
Me too! I won't take my first bite on Tuesdays or Thursdays unless I've got Doug on.
@@redlinearroyo847 the frontier in Brazil is famous as a jack of all trades, its not the absolute best at anything, but its good at everything
@@joeljr570 well said, it pretty much do any. Not the best at anything but it still does it where other trucks won’t.
You're not buying a frontier for "heavy duty workloads"
Lmfaoooo nobody needing heavy duty loads is buying a Nissan
If you want a nissan for heavy duty loads, just get a nissan titan ngl
Its no second gen or 4runner unfortunately. Those vehicles are best in class and superior to the current gen taco.
@@yungboicontigo9278 he’s definitely got his own biases, however he did admit the titan and titan based mid-size suvs and trucks (xterra, Pathfinder, Frontier) we’re great reliable trucks.
@@yungboicontigo9278 depends where you’re at. Its all tacos, f150s, and v6 Colorados in UT. Idk about the titan either but its chassis for all of Nissan full and mid-size trucks/suv. All parts Literally Bolt on to any of them. Except the Y62 Patrol/Armada. Thats its own beast that holds up the land cruisers and other military and diplomat transports.
Doug is the type of guy to break into a car to steal it's owner's manual.
love how the feeling of this truck likely isn’t much different from the old one. i own a 2010 2.5 4 cylinder. has NOTHING more than base besides an auto transmission and ac. roll up windows, manual locks, rwd, no traction control, just abs. it’s rough, loud, slow, and a lot of fun. dead beat reliable tho
I went from a 2019 to a 2022 Frontier as they feel nothing alike. Both don't turn worth a dayum though.
I think original crew was best before dumb interior change. Doors much nicer without protruding plastic pieces d22 best
I think the simplicity and “oldness” of the Frontier is a feature. Not a drawback.
Still has the same frame and mechanics of the old truck which I like. I also love how simple and old school they have kept it. I’m upset they ditched the roof rack. It gave it a more of a global look.
Actually I like the fact they ditched the roof rack. I would rather install one the works better for actual use.
@@Nash_Nismo "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" = "don't improve"
@@moist_ointment I'm guessing that you don't work on cars or trucks. The more vehicles that use the same parts makes replacement parts easier to find and keeps the cost down. Why design a unique part just for the sake of having a new part?
@@backbayfred5409 parts sharing is good. Parts sharing an old, cheaply made part when Nissan has a better, new stalk in their parts bin is the bad part

Love this updated Frontier. I own a 2015 Xterra Pro-4X with 90,000 miles (SUV version of the Frontier of which 2015 was the final year). Drives like new, zero rattles, and have had only two small warranty issues since I bought it new seven years ago. It's been all over the country, through blizzards and 115 degree Las Vegas summers in the Mojave Desert.
I really wish Nissan could bring back the Xterra. I miss my truckster and it too got me everywhere around the country, including Moab.
I adored my Xterra. It was a great truck.
Never get rid of it bud especially if a new one never comes out. Final year is a gem
Dash console pretty similar to outgoing gen, which I owned in 2016. Was involved in a winter rollover accident truck write off. Got a cut on my knee right where Doug was showing the tight area. I managed to get a door open and crawl out, but not crippled and not a ghost. I looked it up and sure enough the Frontier had excellent rollover protection rating. If I had been in a Ford product this comment would be coming from the afterlife.
Modern day 9 speeds do almost better than cvts for fuel Econ so there’s no point. Keep cvts in smaller cars like the versa and Sentra. Just imagine the maxima with a real auto/manual
The new Z looks fantastic. They absolutely nailed it.
@@TheTurbineEngineer agreed.

Pauline I think you wish you had friends as a child
No telescoping steering on a model year 2022 vehicle is a deal breaker, just reeks of cheap. ALL of its competitors have it.
Bought an sv back in January. Absolutely love it. My only complaint is that all the trim levels should’ve came standard with a rear locker
You can install a Dana locker
Pro-X model is probably more for the Baja style truck people Doug. I have a 2wd Ranger Sport with a torsion suspension up front (Xl&XLT came with coils) and that's the go to for that style of truck. Some people also want the look of having 4wd but not have to pay 5k more for a transfer case they will use 2 times a year
True. It's as if he's never heard of the Toyota Tacoma Prerunner...probably one of the most popular trucks ever built.🤪
We just went and looked at these as well as the other trucks like it. The Tacoma had the worst rear seat room, while the Frontier had the best rear seat room. Not saying much as you can see.
I can tell you it's bad, my dad has one and I often have to ride in the back, with my brothers. It is tight has hell, and we're not even past 5'10 or 11
You don't buy a mid-size truck for the rear seat room, they're all snug back there.
Truth. Anyone who needs to have the cabin full of people on a regular basis really needs to get a full size truck.
My Tacoma back seat is for the dog.
Of course Doug would compare this to a Rivian 🙄
I love it!
Having driven this vehicle, it is absolutely lovely.
I’m suddenly noticing, I don’t think I’ve seen Doug in anything other than shorts, and tee shirts. Doug out here being iconic🙌 love you man!
Doug probably had suit shorts on during his wedding
I have a growing love for the frontier. It has now joined my ever expanding choices of trucks I cannot buy. 😅 Gladiator, 2023 Canyon, Maverick.
You know for having old style features, I don’t see that as a bad thing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I agree. It’s a truck, not a new iPhone. Some things don’t have to change.

Yeah because unlike most car reviewers, Doug is the most honest.
Why ever change the traditional gear selector that always worked flawlessly? It's a truck.

Tacoma was t better?
@@Bolek989 I bought a frontier proX. The Tacoma was nice, it was the one I wanted before I drove the frontier. The Tacoma driving position is more like a crossover than a truck and the infotainment is pretty bad.

Glad you like the redesign. You’ll be looking at it for the next 15 years.
@@KB-bh9hp The most reliable truck would be the Tacoma, no way Ford with their shitty history is outdoing Toyota

Doug - “The Nissan Frontier is a New Truck that feels Old”
Meanwhile in the Middle East - Old Nissan Batrols get sold as “New”…
Really wanted the new frontier to be good and was hopeful too with the (i think) great styling.
These are selling well in my East Coast state. Like the Tacoma, the truckiness and blocky styling are features, not drawbacks.
It feels old because it's actually old. This seems like more of a major mid cycle refresh than a full redesign.
Definitely not breaking any barriers with this truck but it brings Nissans mid-size presence to the current state of the industry
I don’t want a modern car based gear selector or any other fancy unreliable technology in my truck. Nissan did a great job with this truck!
I drove one of these today, and was pretty impressed.
7000 rpm Rev limiter is impressive when alfas i4 revs to 5500 rpm

I see a great truck with plenty of room, and time for updates. I never buy the first year of a new generation anyway, gives them time to tweak it 😉. Great vid Doug!
The Pro X competes with Tacoma's PreRunner package. It makes a lot of sense to sit a bit higher to tackle lighter obstacles without having to commit to a full gas guzzling 4x4.
Is the gas consumption that much of a difference? I think you could select 4x2 in the highway and have similar gas mileage. A 4x2 offroad truck is an abomination.
@@RafaelPernia yes typically around 5mpg difference. some people dont need 4x4, but do need a truck.
so I just test drove the Sv king cab and loved the take off and just about peeled from the stop light! love power !!
Love the tight steering for better control on the highway!
The seats are great!
the simplicity is what frontier owners love. its just a reliable truck and nothing more...thats why we love it
I've always liked Nissan trucks.
You are like the Quentin Tarantino of vehicle reviews! Keep up the good work!
Can't believe Doug missed his opportunity to make a pun on Nissan turning over a new Leaf.
that's cus no one remembers the Leaf, except Doug is supposed to be the kind of guy who does
edit: actually the Leaf isn't as unpopular as I thought it was
@Alex Yang Did we watch the same video? 12:20
@@sgtdan707 He didn't make the pun though, he just said the phrase. Doug usually laughs or chuckles when he makes jokes. And that's not a Leaf if that's what you're trying to say.
@@protocetid yea i do see your point. Still, is low hanging fruit, lol
@@sgtdan707 low hanging, Leaf heh
I love my frontier. My dad had one of the first frontiers for over 25 years before he sold it to a neighbor. It is still going strong. I had a 1999 model and now I own the 2022 sv.
I see the bouncy suspension as a plus been driving this exact model for almost 2 years and have had no problems with it.
Just saw a Maverick in the flesh for the first time. It's nicer than I thought.
