  • As the saying goes, if you try to please everyone, you'll please no one. Aptera is targeted at a VERY specific demographic and it's totally ok if you're not in that group.
I'm looking to start putting together a list of accessories I want to buy for the Aptera, if you have suggestions to add to the list below, let me know in the comments!
    Extra solar panels

Future generations, when they compare their future iterations of Aptera (yes that is the car of the future generations) with the conventional cars we have today, will be feeling the same way we feel today when we see cars of the 1920s.

All other cars are Ugly?? No … maybe consistently aerodynamically similar designs and esthetics ( accept Tesla’s cybertruck … but Aptera! )
Aptera Is the only one that is TOTALLY obsessed with BOTH aerodynamics and engineering EFFICIENCY... AND UNCOMPROMISING ABOUT IT

I like that opinion, it made me laugh. All cars on the road are just cliche to me, they look similar and for good reason: Same objective and the same resources. Aptera's SEV has a different objective, negating an entirely different approach.

I’m 100% in agreement and this is exactly what I’m looking for in a most efficient vehicle. I see comments from some on the web wishing for changes in Aptera. Everyone needs to realize what it is and what changes would detract from that and also greatly delay its introduction. You did a good service pointing out these factors. I hope to see Aptera meet and maybe exceed the production schedule. With the price of energy increasing for the foreseeable future, Aptera is needed today.

Types of comments from some people:
      * I want it to look boxy and normal like all the other vehicles and hold 6 passengers and hold a bike and rook rack with no drag and it should tow a solar array the size of two football fields and be able to mine Bitcoin with the solar panels and have an hydraulic suspension so that I can slowly take it low-riding down Nevada Avenue and it should be a convertible, but still meet safety ratings and ohm the convertible roof should be solar too and it should not only float but propel itself on water but why stop there as it should go under the water like in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and it Maybe change the name from Aptera to Tera so that you could put wings on it because it's already aerodynamic and and and.... if you incorporate all of my changes then it will never be built! lol

It simply looks like an airplane without wings...not sure how anyone could not see the beauty in that. (I am a pilot). Yes, because of that it is pretty efficient (unlike airplanes in general), but the best way to reduce carbon footprint is to take public transit and forgo the idea of owning a car in the first place. Cars are a very selfish high carbon machines no mater how you look at it. If they ever get to production stage, I'm in...but if you have to have one, best leave it int he driveway until you are going somewhere that public transit can't take you. 'Fortunately?' for me I can justify owning one because in the small rural town I live in there is no public transit.
Enjoy your retirement...at my advanced age I am still not there.....

I wonder how this would do in snowy conditions (with proper tires)? I would think the 3 motor option would be reasonable in this regard, but that third wheel dragging in the center of the lane where snow is typically built up would be scary... although at least the heavy drag would be at the back and center keeping it going fairly straight.

But, yeah, I just looked. 4.48 cubic feet in the Miata vs. 25 cubic feet in the Aptera. About the only thing I can think of is that the Aptera may not be very deep. So you have a lot width but not a lot of height--at least down at the ends.

Reason 8: if you live in Europe. The car width is just too wide for the narrow European roads and car park spaces. Thanks for doing this video! Many people make these arguments and claim that the Aptera is a bad vehicle because of one of your points listed. And I always jump in by saying that the Aptera EV has a specific and LIMITED appeal. And for many buyers it is simply not a good fit for their needs or expectations in a car. And that is fine because the car market is big enough to fully support niche vehicles that don't try and do everything for everyone. I believe that Aptera will sell every one of these EVs that they can build. And for those buyers (like me and you) this EV is an ideal fit. A couple additional points that people have objection to are that the Aptera has 3 wheels, and it's not a "car", and also that the outboard wheels make the Aptera too wide. So if you feel that a vehicle with 3 wheels is absurd, unsafe or impractical, or feel that because it's 88" wide up front that it will be a problem to drive in your area, then it's not a vehicle that you will want. Or at least hold off on judgement to see how the Aptera works in real life, once the Aptera is formally tested and available to personally test drive.

As to a trailer, they can be used to extend the utility of a vehicle. I agree any trailer attached to an Aptera must be light and small. While it would reduce efficiency when in use, the rest of the time you are driving the most efficient vehicle there is.

  • @charangohabsburg1
    @charangohabsburg1 2 года назад +8

I beg to disagree regarding some of these reasons:
    1. Yes, THIS Aptera is a two seater, but they are planning and already designing bigger super efficient vehicles with more seats. All you have to do is hold your breath while waiting! ;-)
    2. Yes, if you need a car right now you'll have to buy a different one, but I'd recommend to get a used one just to bridge the time until getting hold of the Aptera you can reserve for just 100 bucks right now.
    3. If you live in NY, Massachusetts or Alaska, don't have and don't want to have a motorcycle license AND don't want a driver who drives your car - oh well, bad luck! (remember The Beatles? "Baby you can drive my car, yes I'm gonna be a star... and maybe I'll love you")
    4. Towing a small trailer: I clearly remember thet (IIRC) Steve Fambro said at some point in an interview that they were definitely planning to add the towing possibility for Aptera, and even that such a trailer would offer more solar panel surface. Which would be an excellent weight to Watt ratio if you ask me. And without any doubt ist would be relatively easy to design an aerodynamic and in any way efficient trailer at comparably low costs. My bet is that Aptera motors will go for it.
    5. If you don't care about efficiency you still can and should buy an efficient car, especially when it doesn't cost more than a not efficient one. Yes, you can buy it and not care about its virtues, no problem there. Except of not being able to put very bulky stuff in (big bags and big suitcases will fit though) they made no trade-offs they only made it look different for the sake of efficiency. And other small cars will not allow transporting a sofa inside either, so what.
    6. If you hate this styling... ok then you probably would be well off wearing dark glasses in order to be able to ignore other beautiful things in this world as well. Yes I know I am not very tolerant towards people with (in my not so humble opinion) have a bad taste! LOL ;-)
    7. You don't want to get attention... I can tell you that it's just a learning process in life. I am a rather shy and modest guy and even though managed to get used to get attention when I started to commute with an aerodynamically enclosed human powered tricycle (velomobile, model "GoOne Evolution"). Yes, I had to learn answering questions as well as sometimes telling people politely that right now I had no time to answer questions. It will help having some information (stickers, flyers) ready to hand out or even put a stickes with a QR-Code on the Aptera so people can scan it and read all they might want to know.

The two strikes against it for me are the sheer width of the vehicle (which appears to be necessary for the aerodynamics) which will make it interesting on some of the rural roads round here and more importantly having such a unique vehicle by a small company is going to make getting repairs done a massive issue, especially outside of the US. I personally think that if they can implement an attachable tow hitch, the attachment point covered by a small panel for aerodynamics when not in use, then they should.
Just because it's meant to be aerodynamic doesn't mean it should be incapable of towing at any point during it's life. Does Aptera's "vision" include _"nobody should ever be towing anything, it's inefficient, it's not aero"_ ? I don't think so. At the very least I think they should plan and release a guide for how and where a tow hitch could be best attached. It doesn't matter if the towing capacity is limited, unless it's barely able to tow an empty small utility trailer. What matters is that if the owner would like to tow something too large to fit inside, and it's not too heavy for the vehicle to handle it, then they're able to do it.

The precept of this article is worse than annoying. I woke in a good mood this morning…then I unfortunately crashed into this crummy idea of rubbing everybody’s apprehensions about owning a radically futuristic mode of transportation, as if how fun it would be to think backwards for the sake of some counter-argument:
Yes. It is not a sedan. Isn’t it more like a fighter jet? (I want to argue, btw, that storage capacity in the Aptera is more comparable to a standard design than this article suggests. The motors are inside the wheels, for instance. That leaves cubic space for you.) Yes. It is not for the shy person. Yes. There is absolutely nothing comparable to an Aptera on the road today, or coming in the near future. So…,Can we talk about what makes this car so freaking valuable now?
Yes, please. PS, thanks for doing the article, even tho’ I didn’t like it; I appreciate getting updates on release dates. In fact, I’m totally starved for information.

live in the SC countryside where we get a LOAD of sun but the clearance of this great car,......, on even just the average paved road, parking lot speed bumps would easily take out all the areo-skirting. Pitty- I'd get one hands down and would if they re-thought out the clearance design- even if there was a model that was not as aerodynamic to make it drivable on REAL roads in the country. To my own thinking, they made huge trade off in losing a lot of folks that would definitely buy one with this issue.

If an owner had a teardrop trailer (aluminum body for heat sink) that you could load camping gear, bedding, atv, motorcycles, cooking gear, etc. in. wanted to tow it behind an aptera; then wouldn't it be a good idea to coat the outside with solar panels? extending the range and charging ability (when parked as well as when moving). Even better would be to sell the solar panels with instructions on how to connect them, cable and connectors, gluing instructions, etc. Then the panels could be put on any trailer. I have a 14' cargo trailer with solar power installed that would love
to be coated on all sides and the top. 245 sq. ft. of solar panels is a lot !! my mppt solar charge controller only allows 150 volts of PV input, that's about 1770 solar cells that could be on the cargo trailer, not counting the back ramp/door. the aptera has 193 solar cells. 9 times the cells = 40 miles x 6 = 240 more miles minus the towing energy it takes to tow the trailer. One trailer side
will probably not be in the sunshine.

I live in an area where I will have to plug in my Aptera. (I have no problem with getting motorcycle license so I can travel anywhere.) but, by the time I get my vehicle who knows what laws will change, I may not have to get a motorcycle vehicle license. [towing capacity is under 2000 pounds depending upon additional weight you can figure on about 1200 pounds… it is not how do you say a towing vehicle] hence, my work truck will also be my towing vehicle if I go fishing I need a boat. For pleasure, nothing that you have mentioned is annoying to me, it is part of the package. I’m also retired so I have the time.
I have chosen the Aptera… trading off my dream vehicle of a 59 bugeye sprite. Attention is not a problem because I’ve developed a habit of ignoring other people, this is a trade-off for me. I’m looking at it as I am being an ambassador for the vehicle. I do agree it’ll be impossible for me to ignore people when I’m driving my Aptera. On the other hand, one very very positive thing is, if the car is stolen it will be noticed and recovered.
My dad many years ago was at an auto show of classic vehicles. Somebody decided to steal a 1938 Pierce arrow (straight 12 engine, it is big and silver) it was spotted before the people even knew that it was stolen in the morning. Not a good vehicle to car-jack.

If it is a chair and has a steering "wheel" then a car license is all that is needed, if it has a saddle seat or handlebars, then a motorcycle license is required. It could be designed to haul a trailer and it probably should be eventually, or at least a heavy duty model that will have a tow package. But they possibly could do it without changing on the car itself, just a removable trailer hitch, and still maintain its current efficiency, but don't expect that level of efficiency when the trailer is hooked up. But this is the part of the design i was talking about, the trailer itself. The trailer will have any needed extra battery power the car might need due to hauling the trailer attached, to keep the range acceptable. Also they put the car and trailer in the wind tunnel and come up with natures shape for best efficiency, and build the trailer accordingly. Then the car itself never changed, not even a single pound of battery weight was added to it, because it is in the trailer. The only time you need the extra battery power is when you are hauling anyway, so go ahead and use that information it is free, because i love you. lol
That is assuming the motor is strong enough to haul the trailer at speeds, but i believe it probably will be because i heard them talking about how they believe Germany will notice a good efficiency at high speeds, so the motors are most likely decently sized(hefty). But if they needed to come out with a heavy duty model in order to haul trailer at speed, like i mentioned earlier, then it will have bigger motors and maybe more battery. But of course the heavy duty model will be less efficient, but will haul more stuff. But another possibility is to just install the motors on the trailer itself if you needed more HP to haul the trailer with a reasonable load, if the current motors on car are too small.
But hopefully once they get the car and trailer in the wind tunnel design right, it won't need a heavy duty model or extra motors in the trailer, and you can just use the current model car as is. Then unhook the trailer and its battery and you have the same exact car, same shape, weight, and number of wheels. But the trailer will look weird too because it will be designed in a wind tunnel, but an awesome aero look blended with aero of car. It will probably look like an extended tail, aligning and matching with the flat horizontal fin on the back of the car swooping on a curve downward and then swooping back up in a gradual curve.
But actually once you get into the wind tunnel adding trailers, then it is highly possible part of the car might need to be changed, and depending on the change might not hurt the car itself, but until i test it myself in a wind tunnel i just don't know. Just try to find the best combination for best efficiency without trailer and then with trailer, and marry those two. If the shape they already have is truly the best shape for the car itself, then they already have that done. Now they just need to find the best shape that goes with it for the trailer. But regardless, even if it can't be done, even if no matter what shape they try it still drags the same or very close to it, it still can be done, just not very efficiently. The the extra battery power will be in the trailer so it still can drag against the wind and still get some range. But remember , it is not that with this car and trailer that you would be hauling everyday, or even once a month. So, when disconnected from trailer have fun never having to recharge, but once you want to haul a load of something, or go camping you can, hook it up.
But CERTAINLY, the trailer will have those same solar cells everywhere possible, along with a battery at the bottom. Not only that, if it is a camper model, then it will open up when camped, and take up more area and those additions that open up will be solar cells on the outside too to get more energy for camping lights, cooking, hot water, fridge, etc...
They were limited by range, so in essence limited by the density of energy they could store in the car, minus the amount they could capture back using the solar cells. That is why it is a only a 2 seater, and no trailer hitch. But in the very near future there are other ways to get more energy dense materials, that weigh less. So it means in the near future they will most likely be making a 4 door, it will most likely look very similar but a little bigger and load capacity a little bigger(doubled) and still get 1000 mile range and more. But until solar cells improve they will be limited at 40-50 mile range extension from that, closer to 50 because it will be a bigger car can have more cells.

I'm wanting to find out if any winter driving was performed as I live in Alberta Canada I am concerned about driving in snow. Sometimes roads are not ploughed and I'm especially concered how the rear wheel boot will stand up to pushing all the snow that will be built up in the centre of the lane, The wheel cover clearance is very close so will there be interference for ice build up in this area?

Check your facts, I'm pretty sure Aptera has a tow hitch package. It's one of the topics I discussed before putting in my reservation.

    • @ApteraOwnersClub
      @ApteraOwnersClub  2 года назад

you are correct. they do plan on a hitch. 300lbs max towing so it's pretty limited towing and it will kill the efficiency but they do plan on it for now.

I'm wondering if jurisdictions that require a motorcyclist license to drive an Aptera will allow you to take a motorcycle driver's test in an Aptera.

My first vehicle was a Honda Express: sort of a moped without pedals, if that makes any sense. Anyway the thing didn't have a clutch and was more like riding a scooter. Technically it was road-legal (unlike a moped) so I had to get a motorcycle endorsement on my license -- even though to this day I don't know how to drive a "real" motorcycle.

It fits everything I need I would prefer mine with a stupid cool joystick instead of a steering wheel and pedals and while we are at it it needs to sound like a Jetsons car and I’m all over that shit. Love it and I’m a die hard v8 muscle car, Ferrari, Porsche and other lover. I just think the whole future of transportation needs a massive overhaul but never replace displacement at the same time. Best of both worlds. If it moves and has a throttle of any kind I want it.

My son's reasons: 1) Too inefficient (his cargo e-trike gets 40 miles/kWh). 2) Have to have insurance. 3) Can't drive it on bike trails. 4) Too expensive (his e-trike is about $5k). 5) Too heavy (his e-trike weighs under 100 pounds).

For shorter distances, nothing beats a bicycle. I will continue to use my bike on all trips less than 20 miles. But really hard to do 200 mile trips on a bicycle. Or if I want to go on hike in the mountains and the trailhead is 60 miles away from my house. By the time I road my bike there, is have to turn around and come back home.

@Aptera Owner's Club A recumbent trike is way more comfortable than a bicycle. His has a 100 mile range with 2 of 5 batteries installed and it's a tandem that can tow. So, from his point of view, it's better than any car.
I'm interested in an Aptera to replace my Prius Prime but I really need a third seat. Looks like there's plenty of room so I'll wait and see.

  • @ysesq

the 2 seats will be a dealbreaker for most. its also inefficient compared to an ebike.

I am extremely interested in the Aptera but would like to ask what may be considered a Stupid Question. I am not looking for the Aptera to be a luxury vehicle; however, I watched a video yesterday with Jay Leno test Driving I believe the Gamma prototype with the Aptera CEO. Every time they accelerated from a stop I heard a loud whirring sound and then once up to speed it quieted but was still noticeable. To me this would be annoying while driving. Will this be taken care of once it goes into production?

One fine future day, I could buy a drone with all the gas money I didn’t spend after buying my first Aptera. Program it to just follow me in the lead car, and, presto, no need (or want) for a conventional trailer. Now I could tow two more human beings, too, another thing a trailer can’t do. Agree- I used to be a Tesla fan, but Elon Musk is such a grossly immature man and incompetent leader who can't seem to enforce quality control. It's only amazing and disgusting that Tesla, with a mere 5% of the world's car market, has a market capitalization equal to all the other major car makers in the U.S., Japan, Korea, and Europe combined. When investors finely get over the spell Musk has cast on them, that stock will drop like a decabling elevator.
