Eddie is good! But no Scott. Pearl Jam good but no STP. STP was not a grunge band. STP were the LedZep of America as time goes by, people will realize they were great musicians and so talented. No other band was in their league

david fricke is one of the good ones with regard to music critics, he always has insightful and intelligent things to say! and man scott weiland is underrated by too many people, he was an incredible talent, such range and a beautiful voice!
My band opened for Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts November 15, less than a month before he passed. I can't describe in words what a dream turned reality it was for me to get to share the stage with one of my heroes. After the show my band got to hang out with him for a little while backstage. Here's the bummer, the show was all ages so I brought my two oldest kids with me to share the experience with them, I had to leave early so they could get home due to having school the next day. I didn't stay and meet him personally face to face in the flesh. I regret missing the opportunity to hang out with him now but I don't regret putting my family, my kids first. I know this sounds silly but somehow I knew I'd never get another chance to meet him. Thank you for the music Scott, RIP.

Clancy Coburn our drummer said it was like he wasn't even there, physically he was sitting there but mentally he was gone. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. And it's always about the music, the music is why I wanted to meet him.

Had the pleasure of seeing Scott perform live myself once in Oakland, Ca.once , and as you are all well aware, the man did plenty.. You will be missed my brother. A large swath of my life could be painted in pictures by the music that you and your buddies produced during those early 90's years. RIP my friend, your music that helped to define my much of my generation and will live on forever. God Bless.

Saw Scott in '97-2010-2015... two weeks before he died. Fucking killed every time. Years apart. Amazing singer and frontman. STP has ZERO bad albums. VR first album was the last great hard rock record.
First off - I love David Fricke's writing...whether it's for Rolling Stone or Mojo or wherever. Second - I admire Fricke for admitting that he was one of the many writers who piled on the band in the early days, but later came to realize the band was offering so much more.
Core sounded a lot like Ten. The Plush video was like he was doing an impression of Vedder. Now this was intentional in order to break through. The other videos show them wearing flannel shirts. Maybe all of them from core. Sort of had a Nirvana feel to.
Scott Weiland sounded like he did well before STP were a fully-fledged thing, and well before Ten was out. Refer to Mighty Joe Young, the nucleus of STP, who recorded around 14 or so demos in '89-'90. Scott sounds like Scott.
pearl jam sucks, stp is a million times better. all the 90s alternative rock bands were amazing: nirvana, alice in chains, soundgarden, stone temple pilots, etc. pearl jam was the worst of the bunch, i think they had the least originality and passion, but of course this is only my opinion!
not only scott, but stp in concert..their studio work did not tell the tale, as one had to see them live to really appreciate how amazing that they were. glad that i got to see them twice. sad, sad day. rip, scott weiland :(.

I agree with the front man comment, I saw STP live only once back in 2000, I believe counting crows opened for them, and Live was the head liner anyway, when he took the stage, BAM... all eyes on him, and he got that crowd going!! His peacocking walk,dancing, his voice was amazing, and I was a major fan after that!

I saw them live on tour for their first album. It was a fairly small all ages show in Vancouver in about 1992 or so. They were an amazing live band and he was an enigmatic and wildly charismatic frontman. It remains one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. RIP Scott.
Although I like Pearl Jam they are WAY more boring than STP. STP is very flamboyant/extroverted vibe Pearl Jam are way more somber. That's just a fact if you deny it I don't understand your logic.
I remember reading somewhere that Scott was afraid he sounded too much like Jim Morrison and that he himself didn't think he sounded like Vedder. That he never made that connection. Interestingly enough he got to perform with The Doors for their storytellers gig. Its on youtube too:)

i have seen this before, but what this cat said about scott rings so true, and truer now. not being able to see scott again (especially with STP.)...just sucks. he and they were so much more than what was on the albums. so glad to have seen them in 2008, when they were so amazingly on their game. had seen them once before, in '97, but '08 was...just amazing.

One thing that was unique about Scott was his ability to invoke a sense of "I need to protect him" type feeling in people. There was a vulnerability, a gentleness to him which is quite rare in a rock god lol Maybe it was the child-like spirit he seemed to possess , Idk. I saw STP in West Palm Beach FL and Scott was a wild man. Hearing Core was one of those WTF moments for me couldn't get enough of them. I saw Scott on Howard Stern when he was selling his book Dead And Not For Sale and he carried *a lot* of baggage that I guess he never got rid of. Being sober myself I can tell you that carrying that stuff was one of the major reasons we drank and did drugs. My heart went out to the guy. I was on my way to see my mom who was in a physical therapy rehab when I saw on my Sirus Radio feed RIP Scott Weiland. I pulled over to the side of the road to search on my phone about the news. I couldn't believe Scott was gone. RIP.
I saw STP in Birmingham , Al. at the Oak Mountain Ampitheatre in 2013 . It was chilly that night , ( during one of the winter months ) in an open arena . It was cold , folks . Very cold . Before I went in , I bought a band t-shirt and one of those light blankets . I draped the blanket over me like a poncho . Nonetheless , the band was fantastic . I enjoyed the concert EVERY BIT as much as any other concert . It is one of my most cherished memories .
Great to hear his take on Scott and glad he admitted he was wrong in pegging STP as wannabe Pearl Jam band. The fans never understood that stance because they are nothing alike. Scott doesn't get the credit he deserves for being one of the best singers and frontmen in rock n roll, but he is. He's right up there with the best. I miss him dearly. RIP.
I saw Scott Weiland and the "Wildabouts" in Lexington KY on Mother's day about a year and a half before he passed. The show was great. He was in good shape and he gave an amazing performance, last one to leave the stage. RIP Scott🤘🏼

Thank you, David Fricke, for the obviously heartfelt and honest comments. I was able to see Scott with STP in December, 1996. His live performance and dancing all over the stage made for a concert I'll not forget. And yes, that it is now cut short really, really, truly sucks. Any time now that I mention Scott Weiland, people respond with "oh that drug head?!" I am quick to ask them to read and learn about who he was and the good person underneath the drugs, as I can assume that he was. Hoping for Scott Weiland he has found peace while the rest of us are down here still wearing our STP shirts and blasting out some 'Plush'.
I really believe this. Even in that final year, in the throes of his addiction, he would talk about how he would still be making music fifteen years from now, that he would always be making music, that he would consider getting back together with STP, that he would consider getting back together with VR. He told his guitarist that they would be making a new album after the tour. He might have been depressed but he wasn't ready to call it a day. There was always optimism even in the darkness. It's just that the disease was stronger. So sad. A huge loss. RIP SW
Just discovered Scott Weiland a couple months ago. Excellent front man, and was really admitted. I cried when I found out he died. But I cried for Chester, Chris, and Layne also. The music just tears into you, your heart and soul. It's earily - not predictable - but I think strange how they knew they wouldn't be here for long.....Like Kurt Cobain. I guess they couldn't take the pain anymore. Fuckin' depression eats away at you. It's hard
FACT: The Stone Temple Pilots was an established band before Pearl Jam even formed as a group. In fact they were a band when Mother Love Bone was a group. STP was called Mighty Joe Young and were an established group in the LA/San Diego area before ANY of the Seattle bands broke big. STP was recording their first album, "Core," just at the time that PJ released "Ten." It would've been IMPOSSIBLE for them to imitate Pearl Jam. The critics basically hated STP initially because critics tend to be New York based and have always hated Los Angeles area bands going back to the 60's. They even hated Crosby, Stills and Nash for Christ sakes. By the time that 1996 rolled around and STP was recording their masterpiece "Tiny Music," they sounded more like The Beatles than the Seattle based groups with their emphasis on pop melodies and vocal harmonies. Thankfully the critics finally GOT IT before Scott died, but it still didn't stop the Metal Evolution series on Grunge to group STP with Creed and Nickelback even though "Core" was released 5 years before any of those fake bands came into existence.
I respect David Fricke's opinion, I actually welcome his opinion as well. I saw STP in Indianapolis during the NCAA tournament, Weiland appeared like he could hardly stand and announced to the crowd that he'd started drinking again. When the songs would start he would become so good vocally I swore his drunken demeanor was an act, he was so damn good. It literally changed my life and how I viewed what was possible vocally, the studio albums come close but he had figured out how to make his voice vibrato with the amplification system so well, I've still never heard anything like it. The rest of the band just kicked ass right behind him.
As a kid who was mostly influenced by pop radio and rap tunes in the late 80's... it was hard to differentiate from STP and Pearl Jam when the vibe of grunge was kickin hard over the airwaves. But only because of Plush. Interstate Love Song will always be my favorite from them, and he does not sound like Eddie in any way throughout the song. Scott was truly an incredible vocalist, and showman. RIP bro.

I agree I get tired of hearing the comparison. Eddies voice is much MUCH deeper. Scott has a rock N roll vibe while Eddie is more of an acoustic earthy guy. if you know what I mean. Scott was pure sex drugs & rock N roll and Eddie and Pearl Jam weren't that way.
Man did STP ever step out of the shadow of/comparisons with with PJ,et.all when 'Purple' came out. Proved themselves the heir apparent in the tradition of the great hard rock bands of the 1970's. All 5 STP records are great original musical statements, while the format they were supposedly imitating (grunge) slowly faded away..RIP Scott-Who just might have been the last great rock star.

Saw STP 15 times and Scott solo 3 times. Out of those, only one was disappointing (Holmdel 09), but he was otherwise the real deal and a true rock legend.

Jimmy that's exactly what it was like. He would just sit there with his head between his legs looking down. I cleared my throat and said "excuse me, sir... Yadayada" and he looked up and stood up and shook hands with me as I paid him a compliment. Now, I hung back in the corner of the room to watch the meet and greet, and he would not even look at the customers. On another night, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at The Varsity Club, it was the opposite. He came back into the club after the show and meet and greet, had a drink, ordered food to go, and talked with his fans for freeeee!
STP is far and away the most underrated band of the 90s....imo. All the other bands got their due. But STP was falsely made out to be copycats....but they really weren't. Not when you LISTEN to the music. They were a _weirder_ band than people gave them credit for. Purple showed that in spades. It had _country_ tinges, shimmering jazzy open chords, creative use of modal songwriting, weird arrangements, etc etc...AND it _rocked_ hard. "Sour Girl" I still think is one of the best songs ever written....a modern classic. I feel like only now, after Scott passed, people are finally reassessing this band and realizing they missed the boat on this one. I always heard the creative genius in what they did....but I'm happy people are coming around now, albeit a bit late....
I would only now say this because I wouldn't have wanted to hurt his feelings. He was my friend after all. I watched him perform 4 times in the last year and spoke with him. He was low energy and low strength. He collapsed on the stage in Birmingham, Alabama. If not for his handlers, he would have fallen on his ass. If you want to reference that, if there is video somewhere, it was before the song "Circles" as he goes to sit down. After the show he had a person on each side to prevent his teetering from becoming a fall down the stairs. He wouldn't let them hold onto him though. I told band mates to get him to a Dr. but was not acknowledged. I don't know if he had any "sober companions" on this tour, but there certainly did seem to be sober people in his crew and band, in May. Later on it looked like one of the others was on some shit. Before the show in Birmingham, one of the band members was slyly carrying around a $20 bill. He didn't say why and no one asked. I assume it was for pot,
Oh my God. That is heartbreaking...and disgusting. Why was he allowed to perform like that? I've seen him push away help before so I can totally believe it. Alabama was right before the infamous "Vasoline" show in Texas. They knew he was not lucid enough to perform - I'm guessing that's what the $20 might have been for. He seemed to be doing better yet someone at the Cleveland show (two weeks before his death) said he was being dragged around there and I read some other scary stories as his time came closer. So sad. And so much warning. That man should have been in a hospital, not on a stage. You're fortunate to have met him.
That’s why I’ve never once listened to a critics advice about an album/band. I’ll make that decision on my own. Core and PJ’s Ten to me back in the early 90s sounded nothing alike yet they are both in my top five albums of all time.

Love Pearl Jam and STP. I don't think it was fair to call them a Pearl Jam clone when they first came out. Pearl Jam never did a song that sounded even remotely like Sex Type Thing.
Not only did STP sound different, but they existed before Pearl Jam! Numerous songs that ended up on Core, including Plush, were written and performed before Pearl Jam's formation.
I don't know - maybe what I'm about to write here is pretty stupid, but it seems to me that people who are consumed by a kind of hunger which might lead to drug addiction, it's a kind of fire inside that ends up burning one's soul leaving the living entity in the end completely devoid of any will to live. Weiland's last interviews - man, all the signs of deep depression were there : slow, slurred speech, no light in his his eyes (no sign of any enthusiasm for being interviewed), looking like one is struggling to keep awake. Like the cold ashes of a fire that had been extinguished long ago.
He was probably loaded and was Beyond getting help at this point in his career. He stood the test of time from the late eighties to the 2015. Although he was deteriorating unfortunately at a very high speed here. Fuck he just could not hold on any longer. Rip beautiful Scott Weiland u r greatly missed .....

I had an opportunity to see STP live in 2008 and I decided not to go. I really regret that decision. It really is too bad he died because shit wasn't working out with STP and Chester. I think they would have gotten back together pretty soon.

i have seen this before, but what this cat said about scott rings so true, and truer now. not being able to see scott again (especially with STP.)...just sucks. he and they were so much more than what was on the albums.

One thing that was unique about Scott was his ability to invoke a sense of "I need to protect him" type feeling in people. There was a vulnerability, a gentleness to him which is quite rare in a rock god lol Maybe it was the child-like spirit he seemed to possess , Idk. I can only think of one other celebrity that had that same aura and that was Marilyn Monroe.

I, just don't know, but what I do know, he was an incredible song writer, frontman , whatever he sold records, I cried with some of hes songs, he touched me....at the end I was scared of what I saw on youtube...I was in rehab, and it just blew my mind, how such a incredible performer got taken advantage of ...God bless you Scott Weiland.....you made a difference..
I saw STP in West Palm Beach FL and Scott was a wild man. Hearing Core was one of those WTF moments for me couldn't get enough of them. I saw Scott on Howard Stern when he was selling his book Dead And Not For Sale and he carried *a lot* of baggage that I guess he never got rid of. Being sober myself I can tell you that carrying that stuff was one of the major reasons we drank and did drugs. My heart went out to the guy. I was on my way to see my mom who was in a physical therapy rehab when I saw on my Sirus Radio feed RIP Scott Weiland. I pulled over to the side of the road to search on my phone about the news. I couldn't believe Scott was gone.

I saw STP in Birmingham , Al. at the Oak Mountain Ampitheatre in 2013 . It was chilly that night , ( during one of the winter months ) in an open arena . It was cold , folks . Very cold . Before I went in , I bought a band t-shirt and one of those light blankets . I draped the blanket over me like a poncho . Nonetheless , the band was fantastic . I enjoyed the concert EVERY BIT as much as any other concert . It is one of my most cherished memories .

Great to hear his take on Scott and glad he admitted he was wrong in pegging STP as wannabe Pearl Jam band. The fans never understood that stance because they are nothing alike. Scott doesn't get the credit he deserves for being one of the best singers and frontmen in rock n roll, but he is. He's right up there with the best. I miss him dearly. RIP.
Finally a positive response to Scott passing. I saw STP in 2000 and 2008. They never let me down.
I saw Scott Weiland and the "Wildabouts" in Lexington KY on Mother's day about a year and a half before he passed. The show was great. He was in good shape and he gave an amazing performance, last one to leave the stage. RIP Scott🤘🏼

Thank you, David Fricke, for the obviously heartfelt and honest comments. I was able to see Scott with STP in December, 1996. His live performance and dancing all over the stage made for a concert I'll not forget. And yes, that it is now cut short really, really, truly sucks. Any time now that I mention Scott Weiland, people respond with "oh that drug head?!" I am quick to ask them to read and learn about who he was and the good person underneath the drugs, as I can assume that he was. Hoping for Scott Weiland he has found peace while the rest of us are down here still wearing our STP shirts and blasting out some 'Plush'.
David made some excellent points. the story was not done. after speaking with scott myself, he had a lot to do, a full tank. Story was cut short.
I really believe this. Even in that final year, in the throes of his addiction, he would talk about how he would still be making music fifteen years from now, that he would always be making music, that he would consider getting back together with STP, that he would consider getting back together with VR. He told his guitarist that they would be making a new album after the tour. He might have been depressed but he wasn't ready to call it a day. There was always optimism even in the darkness. It's just that the disease was stronger. So sad. A huge loss. RIP SW

Just discovered Scott Weiland a couple months ago. Excellent front man, and was really admitted. I cried when I found out he died. But I cried for Chester, Chris, and Layne also. The music just tears into you, your heart and soul. It's earily - not predictable - but I think strange how they knew they wouldn't be here for long.....Like Kurt Cobain. I guess they couldn't take the pain anymore. Fuckin' depression eats away at you. It's hard
FACT: The Stone Temple Pilots was an established band before Pearl Jam even formed as a group. In fact they were a band when Mother Love Bone was a group. STP was called Mighty Joe Young and were an established group in the LA/San Diego area before ANY of the Seattle bands broke big. STP was recording their first album, "Core," just at the time that PJ released "Ten." It would've been IMPOSSIBLE for them to imitate Pearl Jam. The critics basically hated STP initially because critics tend to be New York based and have always hated Los Angeles area bands going back to the 60's. They even hated Crosby, Stills and Nash for Christ sakes. By the time that 1996 rolled around and STP was recording their masterpiece "Tiny Music," they sounded more like The Beatles than the Seattle based groups with their emphasis on pop melodies and vocal harmonies. Thankfully the critics finally GOT IT before Scott died, but it still didn't stop the Metal Evolution series on Grunge to group STP with Creed and Nickelback even though "Core" was released 5 years before any of those fake bands came into existence.
I saw that series again recently and noticed that. It pissed me off

I respect David Fricke's opinion, I actually welcome his opinion as well. I saw STP in Indianapolis during the NCAA tournament, Weiland appeared like he could hardly stand and announced to the crowd that he'd started drinking again. When the songs would start he would become so good vocally I swore his drunken demeanor was an act, he was so damn good. It literally changed my life and how I viewed what was possible vocally, the studio albums come close but he had figured out how to make his voice vibrato with the amplification system so well, I've still never heard anything like it. The rest of the band just kicked ass right behind him.

As a kid who was mostly influenced by pop radio and rap tunes in the late 80's... it was hard to differentiate from STP and Pearl Jam when the vibe of grunge was kickin hard over the airwaves. But only because of Plush. Interstate Love Song will always be my favorite from them, and he does not sound like Eddie in any way throughout the song. Scott was truly an incredible vocalist, and showman. RIP bro.

I agree I get tired of hearing the comparison. Eddies voice is much MUCH deeper. Scott has a rock N roll vibe while Eddie is more of an acoustic earthy guy. if you know what I mean. Scott was pure sex drugs & rock N roll and Eddie and Pearl Jam weren't that way.
Man did STP ever step out of the shadow of/comparisons with with PJ,et.all when 'Purple' came out. Proved themselves the heir apparent in the tradition of the great hard rock bands of the 1970's. All 5 STP records are great original musical statements, while the format they were supposedly imitating (grunge) slowly faded away..RIP Scott-Who just might have been the last great rock star.

Saw STP 15 times and Scott solo 3 times. Out of those, only one was disappointing (Holmdel 09), but he was otherwise the real deal and a true rock legend.

Jimmy that's exactly what it was like. He would just sit there with his head between his legs looking down. I cleared my throat and said "excuse me, sir... Yadayada" and he looked up and stood up and shook hands with me as I paid him a compliment. Now, I hung back in the corner of the room to watch the meet and greet, and he would not even look at the customers. On another night, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at The Varsity Club, it was the opposite. He came back into the club after the show and meet and greet, had a drink, ordered food to go, and talked with his fans for freeeee!

STP is far and away the most underrated band of the 90s....imo. All the other bands got their due.
But STP was falsely made out to be copycats....but they really weren't. Not when you LISTEN to the music. They were a _weirder_ band than people gave them credit for. Purple showed that in spades. It had _country_ tinges, shimmering jazzy open chords, creative use of modal songwriting, weird arrangements, etc etc...AND it _rocked_ hard. "Sour Girl" I still think is one of the best songs ever written....a modern classic. I feel like only now, after Scott passed, people are finally reassessing this band and realizing they missed the boat on this one. I always heard the creative genius in what they did....but I'm happy people are coming around now, albeit a bit late....

I would only now say this because I wouldn't have wanted to hurt his feelings. He was my friend after all. I watched him perform 4 times in the last year and spoke with him. He was low energy and low strength. He collapsed on the stage in Birmingham, Alabama. If not for his handlers, he would have fallen on his ass. If you want to reference that, if there is video somewhere, it was before the song "Circles" as he goes to sit down. After the show he had a person on each side to prevent his teetering from becoming a fall down the stairs. He wouldn't let them hold onto him though. I told band mates to get him to a Dr. but was not acknowledged. I don't know if he had any "sober companions" on this tour, but there certainly did seem to be sober people in his crew and band, in May. Later on it looked like one of the others was on some shit. Before the show in Birmingham, one of the band members was slyly carrying around a $20 bill. He didn't say why and no one asked. I assume it was for pot,
Oh my God. That is heartbreaking...and disgusting. Why was he allowed to perform like that? I've seen him push away help before so I can totally believe it. Alabama was right before the infamous "Vasoline" show in Texas. They knew he was not lucid enough to perform - I'm guessing that's what the $20 might have been for. He seemed to be doing better yet someone at the Cleveland show (two weeks before his death) said he was being dragged around there and I read some other scary stories as his time came closer. So sad. And so much warning. That man should have been in a hospital, not on a stage. You're fortunate to have met him.

That’s why I’ve never once listened to a critics advice about an album/band. I’ll make that decision on my own. Core and PJ’s Ten to me back in the early 90s sounded nothing alike yet they are both in my top five albums of all time.

Love Pearl Jam and STP. I don't think it was fair to call them a Pearl Jam clone when they first came out. Pearl Jam never did a song that sounded even remotely like Sex Type Thing.
Not only did STP sound different, but they existed before Pearl Jam! Numerous songs that ended up on Core, including Plush, were written and performed before Pearl Jam's formation.

I don't know - maybe what I'm about to write here is pretty stupid, but it seems to me that people who are consumed by a kind of hunger which might lead to drug addiction, it's a kind of fire inside that ends up burning one's soul leaving the living entity in the end completely devoid of any will to live.
Weiland's last interviews - man, all the signs of deep depression were there : slow, slurred speech, no light in his his eyes (no sign of any enthusiasm for being interviewed), looking like one is struggling to keep awake.
Like the cold ashes of a fire that had been extinguished long ago.
He was probably loaded and was Beyond getting help at this point in his career. He stood the test of time from the late eighties to the 2015. Although he was deteriorating unfortunately at a very high speed here. Fuck he just could not hold on any longer. Rip beautiful Scott Weiland u r greatly missed .....
