  • Van Lear Rose is an award-winning album by Loretta Lynn, released in 2004 and produced by Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes. The album was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who wrote one track, sings a duet with Lynn, and performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time of the album's release, Lynn was 72 and White was 28.
The albums title refers to Lynn's origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and at number 24 on the Billboard 200, the most successful crossover music album of Lynn's 45-year career.
The track "Portland, Oregon" was listed as the 305th best song of the 2000s by Pitchfork Media.

One of the things I admire about Jack White is his deep knowledge of & commitment to preserving the history of American music. Any guy who can do a cover of ‘Jolene’ as amazing as his knows his shit. RIP Loretta Lynn - keep singing!

I'm amazed at the how many people are beginning to take notice of Jack White just in the last few years. He's been around a long time and doubt anyone can name a movie put out in the last 15 years that his music is not in it!! He's already a veteran of all types of music genres.

As a Portland native. Man, this song has always captured the dark, drizzly vibe of town. Loretta spent time in Oregon in the 50's. My grandfather played bills with her. Portland was also one of three cities that had TWO Country radio stations in the 50's. Portland, Nashville and Memphis. A long tradition of County in Portland and Oregon. RIP Loretta

I'm hard of hearing. Played this with my headset on, and I could hear every note beautifully. Wonderful arrangement, and obviously wonderful vocals. Someone wrote on another video, "Get a man like Jack White who looks at you the way he does at Loretta Lynn." They have a beautiful friendship that runs deep and soulful, which translates into heart-warming music that no one else can replicate.

Loretta Lynn was one beautiful woman 🤩👠👠 and what made her so beautiful was there wasn't a fake bone in her body. Loretta was a natural born beauty. When she passed away she looked like she did when she started singing only different was the way she wore her hair but other than that she was Loretta Lynn all the way. I think she instilled that in her sister Crysta Gale because she's just a virgin of Loretta Lynn. I love 😍❤️💞 the Lynn family 💕💞🎶🎸🎤🌹👃. Stick with your mama teaching because it will take you all a long way. Loretta mama and daddy brought them up with love 😍❤️💞💯 respect the right way. It's all in the song A COLD MINER'S Daughter. They were truly brought up with love 😍❤️💞💯🤟❤️🌹👃 thanks too the Webb's.

I saw the story about this collaberation on PBS American Masters. Jack tells a great story about their meeting, and his fascination with Loretta's ability to write a song. He hand picked the songs for this LP from a notebook of songs Loretta wrote but never recorded. In all I think he said the was about 199 to choose from.

I don't know why everyone kept saying, Dolly Parton, is the only female country artist to ever record a rock and roll song in country music history.
They said the same thing re: Loretta Lynn about this song. And the same went to Johnny Cash about his "One," song.
If no other female country artist ever recorded a rock and roll song before who are "One Trick Pony," Highway 101, "The Kendalls," and Gretchen Peters? What about Mary Chapin Carpenter just steals it all that little "B" Bopper.
There are way too many band and artists out there who put that whole lie to rest.
Yet, No one ever said anything. All those female artists kept a tight lid on it all this time.
You should be ashamed of yourself Dolly Parton, I think you even received awards for it and were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
    What?
We love you all to the artists listed above. ❤

Well, Portland, Oregon and sloe gin fizz
If that ain't love, then tell me what is, uh-huh uh-huh
Well I lost my heart, it didn't take no time
But that ain't all, I lost my mind in Oregon
[Verse 2-Jack White & Loretta Lynn]
In a booth in the corner with the lights down low
I was moving in fast she was taking it slow, uh-huh uh-huh
Well, I looked at him and caught him looking at me
I knew right then, we were playing free in Oregon
[Verse 3-Jack White & Loretta Lynn]
Next day, we knew last night got drunk
But we loved enough for the both of us, uh-huh uh-huh
In the morning when the night had sobered up
It was much too late for the both of us in Oregon
[Verse 4-Loretta Lynn & Jack White]
Well, sloe gin fizz works mighty fast
When you drink it by the pitcher and not by the glass, uh-huh uh-huh
    Hey bartender, before you close
Pour us one more drink and a pitcher to go
    [Outro-Loretta Lynn & Jack White]
    And a pitcher to go
    And a pitcher to go
    And a pitcher to go
    And a pitcher to go
    And a pitcher to go
