This was the only historic Late Show event in the many years Letterman was on. Wanda Jackson is a true performer and Jack White is a powerhouse talent and a stand up gentleman.
@@georgerandall5686 yeh, much better to be a self-contradictory conservatidiot. The founding fathers were trying to be the most progressive rationalists possible. Conserve wut?
See these performers while you can. Wanda was 74 here - that's how old Stevie Nicks is right now, and she's on tour. You never know when they're gonna stop.
What I really like about Jack White; is that he always focuses on making sure that the composition of a piece works well for what it’s supposed to for it’s creative execution of direction and not care about being in the spot-light; rather, being an excellent backing support member. The guy is a true artist and musician.
Yeah, Jack is a gift to the world of rock and roots music. He’s an archivist, producer, arranger and here, a supporter of older performers. He’s kind of an old soul I think.
I saw Wanda Last year, and she was awesome!! I was prepared to see her and think "isnt she a cute little old lady" and "hey I got to see a legend" She was amazing. This performance pales in comparison to what I saw her do on stage. She did her older songs, that i listened to with my grandparents while i was growing up, and new stuff that was fantastic. Thank you Jack White for bring her back for the younger generation.
I saw her a few years ago and Lemmy from Motorhead had requested a song. she said, "This next song is for Lenny, from Motor..what ?". He just laughed. I'm glad people like Lemmy , Jack White and David Letterman still remember who the real rock royalty is. Wanda is the queen.
Wanda rules! she's been rockin' since the mid-50's, went on tour and dated Elvis, and shouldve been bigger in this country than she was! and she's a total sweetheart in person. keep it up Wanda!!!
I was DELIGHTED when I found out that Wanda had recorded fresh, new 'Devil's Music' at 70! She was still really hot, too. That's what happens when you lead a decent, amazing life and don't turn your body into a Chem Lab!
Wanda attended my church quite often when I was a teen in the 70s. I didn't know her history. So sad I did not get to know her. She was very friendly. Jack White is a class act that understands, values, and honors our music history! This was a fantastic RUclips find!
not only lyrics and music, but passion and a capacity to perform in the moment without being concerned with anything other than being awesome and kicking ass. never heard of wanda jackson before, but she's a badass in my book now that i've seen this.
Is there anything that Jack White touches that doesn't "rock" I'd never heard of Wanda Jackson before this now I can't get enough. The work he did with Tim Eriksen on the Cold Mountain introduced me to two whole genres of music and guys like Riley Bagus... the guy is a true musical genius.
My favorites are the PBS specials...particularly the doo wop shows. People in their 70s, 80s, and early 90s, still singing right on the note, doing the steps...dressed in real stage clothes. Glad that Jack is celebrating this legend.
To do the Hand Drop Microphone is just PURE CLASS ........... you can she she is from the same Stock as Elvis ........... having toured with the King in the 50's
I never used to be a fan of Jack white, however the stuff he's being doing over the last couple of years/Blue/cayan/ rockabilly is great..long live Jack White !
The other backup singer is Ashley Monroe, she sang on the bluegrass version of Old Enough the Racs did with Ricky Scaggs, and that's Olivia Jean from The Black Belles on guitar next to Jack. And that pedal steel player is Rich Gilbert, who is just a beast.
The sheer number of negative comments are a sad indicator of how far we've fallen in our society and musically. This performance should be appreciated by everyone. Awesome.
Of _course_ Jack is a showman...he's fucking unbelievable at it. But he also, knows how to assert himself within music itself. He knows when to push and when to pull. And this performance exemplifies that skill Jack has obviously honed...because it's his life's passion. If only any of us could be that lucky. And yeah...this whole video is killer all around...not just for Jack, but for the entire band, and equally to Wanda alone. If you just released this song, without the video, a _lot_ of people would think it was some truly cool new artist. Her voice is cutting and haunting and sarcastic and sincere all at once. I love it.
In my opinion...Jack's collaboration with Loretta Lynn worked great but if I'm being honest about this? Watching Jack White playing a vintage Johnny Kidd & The Pirates song, really is the best part.
Maybe not Wanda's best performance, but I have so much respect for this Woman! I saw her live a number of years ago in Toronto. It was such an honour meeting this lady. She was doing Rockabilly the same time as Elvis. One of the first ladies of ROCK!! Check out her version of Fuji Yama Mama. This lady left her mark and I still think she kicks butt!
Show some respect. She is and always will be the Queen of Rockabilly! Letterman was totally classless referring to her being late. The woman had just buried her mother the day before and woke up at 4am to get to NYC for this appearance and for the show tonight in Brooklyn. Who cares if she was a few minutes late? That's an old trooper. And i heard her live last night in "Million Dollar Quartet" on Broadway and her voice is still there. Trust. Long live the Queen.
It's not in my nature to put any song on repeat, no matter how much I love it. I played this 3 full times, partly in honor of Jack and partly because I just couldn't help myself. I don't believe I've seen Dave so excited about the musicians on his show, lol. And, enough of this crap, Jack and Wanda are both legends in their own right, and they were clearly honored to be performing with each other. Let's just dig the music, because that's what it's all about, guys.
Most comments on here are just ignorant. She screamed most of her hits in style of rockabilly even back she was 20 so don't act surprised that she's not sounding like Celine Dion here. If you listen close she sounds the exact same, but with less power because of her age... that's all.
Nice assessment there. Besides, who TF wants to hear yet another female singer who over-emotes, wails and tries to pack every vocal nuance into one song? Egad, not me.
There would be no "rock" music without people like Wanda Jackson, who paved the way. From The Beatles, to Metallica, the Kinks to AC-DC, Led Zeppelin to Pearl Jam... none of it would have happened without Wanda and her peers!
For all the negative comments about Wanda Jackson...how many of you can say you are still performing at 74?? HMMMMM??? (silence, followed by the chirping of crickets)...thought so....you have no reason to slam a country legend...
Steven Norman I knew Wanda when she was in my studio back in the 60's. She was as classy then as she still is today. She still gives me shivers as much as listening to this cut as if she were still running her fingers through my hair years ago. Same shocking feeling. She still has it.
Steven Norman I am most pleased with your response. Some of us old codgers have to respect those who created our roots from the ground up. Few these days to so. I am 58 going on 60...God willing. I go way back...LOL. I had the luck of helping some wonderful talents upon their destiny. She was one so gifted, not my me, but by God above. These things are NOT created in the studio, just enhanced. The gift comes from above, and few are so chosen. She was.
Check out her early stuff, she was incredible. The arrangement is pretty massive and kind of overwhelms her. Wonder if it might have been better with a 3-piece behind her. (With Jack, of course.)
Anyone putting down Wanda should look at her videos when she was young. She's a true legend, one of the all time greats.
Wanda got her Shakin’ All Over jacket on. She’s gettin’ good back up support.
Wanda got her Shakin’ All Over jacket on. She’s gettin’ good back up support.
Why is Jack White hiding behind his hair?
being a throw away society doesn't mean throwing away our ICONS like Wanda

So cool.
Respect for Jack White because he makes a habit of including and respecting elders in his profession.

Thanks Jack for generating some attention and recognition to Ms Jackson.
Love the orchestration.
Johnny Kidd is still my favorite.

They stop when they drop.

I love how she sings a 1/4 beat behind the music. Makes the song.
Who could possibly click "dislike" on this one?!?! Impossible in my eyes. This rocks socks.

Wow, this has got some poke! Johnny Kidd and the Pirates hit 1960, wonderful.
Yeah, Johnny Kidd. You said it.
I just can't stop listening!
I love how respectfully Jack steps back and gives all the spotlight to Wanda when David comes over. Such a gentleman.
Yeah, Jack is a gift to the world of rock and roots music. He’s an archivist, producer, arranger and here, a supporter of older performers.

Wicked Wanda. Jack very cool...
Wanda was a Star in Her day and Jack knows That
he treats musicians like royalty
I was in the audience that night. Fantastic performance live!
By far the best performance on the David letterman show
Bless Jack White for returning everything where it came from while forging new paths. Quite simply he's genius.
Wanda Jackson and Jack White ARE what true rock'n'roll is about
