    Well, this weeks vlog is kinda basic. I decided to be like all the other Mavic Pro owners and try and find out how far away my quad copter would go. I failed...or succeeded, depending on your perspective.

    You would have easily made it back with 20% from that point. But better to be safe than sorry

    • @ChrisRollins
      @ChrisRollins  7 лет назад +4

      Ernest possibly, the head wind was only letting me get about 10-16mph and there was still 3600 ft of water between me and the quad, so in the moment it absolutely seemed impossible

    • @ernestabc123
      @ernestabc123 7 лет назад +10

      Im only saying this because at 3:31 you had lots of height and 34% battery and were cruising at 23mph! You would have just and just made it with 4mins flight time. That 2mins it shows you is till auto landing. But again, if I had a friends house I would have done the same. Not gonna risk £1000

      haha! I definitely see your point! My inexperience with the mavic put my brain into panic mode and my estimation skills went out the window! ah well, never again (intentionally) will i do this. thanks for watching!

    So glad to know I'm not the only person who's had to sit there waiting 39 minutes for a firmware update! (in my case, in a park surrounded by people and children coming up to me asking when I was going to start flying and leaving after 2 or 3 minutes of conversation after they got bored waiting). But I've learned my lesson the hard way: ALWAYS check for firmware updates before leaving home!

    I felt that moment of relief when you manage to land the drone safely at your friends backyard. It's a thrilling misadventure that is not life threatening but I felt the agonizing moment when you were finding a safe and recognisable spot to save your drone. I felt like I'm invoved as well in this video clip. Good one. Cheers

    GREAT Save man!!! you are not an idiot! You just learned a few things... Looks like going out you might have had a tail wind and coming home you had a headwind. On range flights always and try outbound with a head wind and then keep the tail wind as your secret weapon on the way back. I also noticed you did not fly straight out but sure did fly straight back! Good job again!

    I feel your nervous pain. I've only had mine about a week and each day I'm willing myself to fly a little farther with it and get more comfortable with it. But it's stressful and you have to really trust that it's going to perform as expected. But that pit in my stomach when it's a mile away tells me I'm not really trusting it just yet.

    Lesson Learned brother never take it out of line of sight

    • @gedgar2000
      @gedgar2000 7 лет назад +4

      With a little Mavic, it's effectively out of sight (For flying orientation) in a couple hundred yards. FPV and the GPS map give you all the info you need and then some. It's a lot easier than trying to fly via line of sight a symmetric spec in the sky. The FAA is nuts. I have TONS of time in a P3P, and have pushed it, lost signal and had it come home MANY times. I REALLY WOULD fly that thing out to 10,000', turn off the remote, and bet $2,000 it will land real close to where it took off. Anyone who wants to bet can message me. You'll lose! The Mavic has done well, but the DJI Go4 App is always dying and needing to be restarted on my Android phone. And I've read about a couple fly aways. BUT I'd Zbet $500 the Mavic comes home if you completely turn off the remote, and will land real near where it lifted off.

    Accidents happen ! It was a great flight Man !! Try to take-off into the headwind next time and have the wind at your back when RTH .... One thing to consider if you decide to fly long distance is the speed you are traveling. There is a sweet spot flying that will allow you to maximize the distance you can fly while conserving as much battery as you can. I found with my P4, 23mph to 25mph allowed me to fly the farthest.

    I think you made the safe decision of landing on a good spot.
    You only had 13% battery left when you landed.
    Perhaps if you continued returning it would have dived in the water.
    So, I think you were right to play safe and were lucky, as a bonus, to be able to land it in a place where you could retrieve it.
    I support your choice 100%.

    @bowman968 7 лет назад +14

    Just a note for next time, don't return to home in sport mode. You want your RPM to be somewhere between 4,000 to 6,000. Sport mode is just so inefficient because it's in the 8000 to 9000 RPMs to move the drone at those speeds. Your over all distance would of been much more if you stayed in gps more the mode the entire time.

      I'm not too sure about that, because it looks like he didn't return back in sport mode, but went out in sport mode... From my experience, which I could be wrong, I seem to actually get farther with sport mode than if I'm just in regular mode...

    • @sheldonandres
      @sheldonandres 7 лет назад +1

      Hmmm... I will have to do some more testing, could have been the cold that affected it or because it had the return to home to ascend quite a bit before coming back... but mine, the farthest I made it on regular mode was about 3.5 kms or 2.17 miles on regular mode before it wanted to return home because of low battery...

    All that water was making me nervous. I was more worried about you potentially going down into the water, really though going down on land can be also likely that you wouldn't be able to recover the drone. I lost a small one the other day into a tree I know right where it is but I have yet to try any recovery efforts, the fact of the matter is that its really easy to lose a drone and these mavics are too expensive to have to replace for a reasonable person. Glad you found an escape option! alternately I would have put it down into a strangers front yard and asked for forgiveness if I absolutely had to. Knowing you have to go down sucks, going down battery 0 into water would be much worse haha.

    I know this is over a year old but adding that location and Geomagnetics makes a huge difference with range.
    I have flown a P3Pro at "noisy" locations where signal gets weak at less than 2,000-3,000Ft distance but I made it to 20,070 Ft one time where location and conditions were perfect.
    I could have gone further that day (still had both RC and video signal) but I turned around at 20K because the battery was at 46%. My plan was to turn around for the downwind leg at 48% but when it passed 17K and then 18K I just had to push it to 20,000 😜
    Advertised range on P3Pro is 3.1 miles so it's still hard to believe it made it 3.8 miles with "no mods or range extenders" (even more shocking that the video worked that far out) but again the location AND conditions were obviously perfect that day.
    Battery was 6% when I landed and hit 5% before I turned it off so yes I timed it closer than I would have liked, and yes it took a lot of Up-Stick to keep it from auto-landing once it hit 10%.
    Hands were shaking during that last 5% and I have zero desire to ever try that again.

    Chris, it looked liked it was going to be close, but I think you would have made it back above the critical 10% autoland battery value. But if you were in doubt, and had a great spot picked out, better safe than sorry. One CRITICAL thing I think I noticed is that if you were at max. Sport Mode speed, going out and coming back (from the speeds shown), it looks like you flew out with light tailwind, back with a slight headwind. THE BIGGEST NO NO! On a pretty calm wind day, I made 14,000', still with OK radio signal strength, but thankfully turned home. I cut it SO close that I was at 10% and landing and JUST made the edge of my front lawn! Phew. Dumb luck! Just as an aside, I don't think full forward Sport Mode speed is the best range speed. ESPECIALLY with a tailwind. I used full speed out and back though, maybe screwing up my range a little. ANY further, and I'd have lost my cool bird, and would have been in mourning for weeks. LOL

  • @clownandponyshow
    @clownandponyshow 7 лет назад

    Chris. When flying a drone, you must think about wing speed and direction. I noticed you had a ground speed of 42 on the way out, but only 26 on the way back. This indicates that you had a tail wind going out and thus a headwind coming back. Never test for distance with a tail wind as it could take you 2x as long or more to come back which means bye bye drone.

    glad you got your bird back! I always thought it ridiculous that DJI puts these insane distance limits on the Mavic & P4P. While it's great to know these drones CAN fly that far, rarely do they have the battery life to make it back, especially when the weather can turn on a dime, often making a RTH next to impossible. I've seen far too many videos like yours to trust a long distance test. IDK, a couple miles is plenty car enough me, I can't afford to fork out another 1600 for a replacement. LOL
    Great recovery though! Happy flying!

    • @ChrisRollins
      @ChrisRollins  7 лет назад

      i absolutely agree. My theory is that it has far reaching radio range because they want the close proximity flying to have as strong a signal as possible, and the long range is just a by product of that strong signal.

    course you're not an idiot, you were so close to the home point!!!! Don't be afraid to fly far, is so exciting!! Next time try to take off slowly an Hoover just a few seconds over home point and this way the Mavic could record exactly the same spot for a precision landing. Nice video! Have a nice day

    I'm new with my mavic Pro, so I appreciate your video it's given me confidence to fly a little further away maybe not 4 miles but definitely 2 or 3. take care!

      thank you! its an impressive machine!it handles indoors extremely well too. have you tried that?

    • @Oracle_Speaks
      @Oracle_Speaks 7 лет назад

      Yes I tried flying indoors, did not go well.... something interfered with the signal and got within 6" of hitting the wall before I could get it to land. Met a guy who owns a drone company and he suggested I look into FAA part 107...check out.... learn the legal rules of the road. Also he suggested I use an app called Airmap.... check it out in your app store. Take care!

    Smart thinking on the friends house landing. I've done that before with my Inspire one, in the Bronx, on top of buildings.. lol

      Anthony Aprea oh man! I can only imagine the anxiety you had with that expensive thing! I mainly have to worry about trees, you have people to watch for! Haha stay safe!

    You probably could have made it back. If you decide to land somewhere else it is important that you tell the aircraft to land rather than just lower it down and hope that it gets the message. If it has been told to land it will land and switch off. If it just goes down it might lose signal as it drops down behind something. If it loses signal it then should try to return to home which means taking off again and ascending, which is likely to doom it to not having enough power to return, in which case it lands at the point (perhaps over a lake) when it runs out of power. If you have the presence of mind you can select the behaviour in the event of signal loss.

    wow I am waiting for my Mavic now but don't think I will ever get to that level of confidence to fly that far. LOL up till now been flying a lot of "toy" models ranging from $69 to several hundred dollar drones. And only lost one so far. great video thanks

    I'm sure you have heard this by now... I saw someone else do an emergency landing like that and forgot to completely disarm the Mavic. When he got in the car to go get it,it lost signal. What does a Mavic do when it loses signal? It returns home. lol
    While he was driving to the landing spot,it had taken off again and was going home. The battery died enroute and he lost it over a cliff.

    That was hilarious, Chris. Respect to you for a) attempting this and b) posting it on YT. Thank god you had a mate close by. Cheers.

    Always fly away into the wind, so you have that tail wind to bring you home quickly. Also when flying into the wind, drop altitude as windspeed is probably lower at lower altitudes.

    You did a great job! If you can on a range test just fly outbound with a head wind so then when you come back you'll have a tailwind to help, but you handled it like a pro. I bet you are a private Pilot??

    rule of thumb ..if max flight range is 4.3 miles ..divide that by half then subtract 10% ..that way you should make it back with a buffer

    Today I almost lost mine in a 6 mile excursion. "Aircraft disconnected" I had the CJI goggles on (which somehow were working) so I flew back to my 'woods' with literally one sec left to RTH (near the precarious trees). Live, learn, and be blessed I guess.

    That was fun to watch, but I thought you could turn off sport mode and do an auto return to home to make it travel more efficiently.
