Wow that was incredible! That really is in a different league. You went 3 miles out and came back and landed perfectly. Watching this was like I was there. Thank you.
I flew mine 1.2 miles and tried landing it at a desired spot, but when I got down so low, it lost signal and Return-to-Home kicked in and it came right back. So... it was scary that I lost signal but awesome seeing how good the RTH worked. The video is on my channel titled "DJI Mavic Pro / Range Test (1.2 Mile Flight!).
Cyrex Mavic uses Ocusync to transmit control and video via 2.8, not same as Lightbridge but similar to internet wifi, yes live video stream to tablet. For technical specs you need to go to DJI website
Not Sure if Anyone mentioned this but don't forget that there may have been a tail wind leaving and a headwind coming back and that will increase the ground speed going away but decrease the ground speed coming back. I am sure the battery and distance calculation from DJI may be in a no wind condition. Its common Aviation. It may have been a calm wind on the ground but I guarantee it was not a calm wind above the tree line. FYI. This will throw the battery calculation to get home off and you may end up running out of battery before you land.
Mine arrives tomorrow!!! That range is incredible especially at that frequency and with you on the ground. There must be all kinds of obstacles between you and the drone at 3 miles out!
I ordered my Mavic yesterday. I cannot wait!! There are old gold and garnet mines tucked into the mountains above Palm springs California. I'm going to use my mavic to find them along with ancient native american sites. Very useful tool that will save me a lot of hiking that's unneeded!! Watch for my videos of the sites I find!
Great Range Test..That is the best I have seen thus far..Good thing you used sport mode to get out there faster..I was really suprised at the signal strength because I have watched other videos that lost alot of signal at just 1 mile.
I’m a first time magic pro owner Do range extenders work ? Not to push limits but to be extra safe and not lose connection. Thank you for a great video
Yes they work. I've tried Titan on my Mavic. Look at commandcase.com But, the stock Mavic already has good range, better than an Inspire 2. Depends on where you do most of your flying and whether you're having signal problems, otherwise I'd stay with stock
Drone Videos my 1st flight was in my yard & in beginner mode went up to its max height and after about 2 minutes it flew away I ran down the street and finally go a hold of it and flew it back. Sweaty palms feet and torso WTH!!!
Hi Tony....sadly no Walmart but I get my fix every year or so when we visit the good 'ol USA. We do have Costco here but absolutely no Mavics yet. Regards my friend Noel
Wow great demo and distance. I guessed you would have 15 percent battery left when you were still mile and half out lol..Good job. Happy Flying !! GrampaKenCanada
You shouldn't run the battery under 20%, it will increase the internal resistance of a lithium polymer battery which will decrease the flight time on future charges. The sweet spot is keeping it just a tad above 20% and when you store the battery for say 1-2 months + keep it at around ~ 3.8V/Cell (or 40-50% charged) in a cold room, some people throw it in the refrigerator too.
I wonder how much additional flight time we could get by reducing speed to 35 MPH? kinda finding the most efficient speed/flight time for long range missions
Hi, very interesting test, I am seriously thinking about buying the Mavic Pro. One comment, you mentioned that the Trackimo does not interfere with the on board GPS. I work as an offshore surveyor and I use multiple DGPS (Differential GPS) systems) symultaniously, we often have up to 10 independant systems working side by side. You should never get independent GPS systems interfering with each other. The way GPS works is that the receivers passively receive signals from the satellites so the only way they would interfere would be if one of your systems was transmitting on the same frequencies used by GPS which is not allowed by law. These are 1575.42 MHz - L1; and a second at 1227.60 MHz L2. So what I am trying to say is you do not need to worry about interference. Also the Video system transmits at 2.4 GHz so that is nowhere near the frequency of GPS. I see the controller also operates at 2.4 Ghz so I would be interested to see how they stop the video and the controller interfering, but as can be plainly seen from your video, they obviously do not. Have fun :-)
4.3 miles isn't agressive when referring to its a controller range. you could've kept going, but the onboard battery wouldnt have allowed for a full return. the battery wouldve allowed for that range, but it wouldve required you to retrieve it. the battery made a safe 6.5 mile journey but it could not have made a safe 8.6 mile journey. battery range is much lower than the controller range and two independent points
For maximum range fly at about 25mph anything more is inefficient. Also the pilot in this vid flew straight up then hovered before setting off, that wasted power and reduced range.
To maximize range given a given battery capacity, I have the feeling that from a throttle position standpoint, you'd want to go against a headwind with higher power (presumably going out against the wind), which would give a higher airspeed, than coming home with a tailwind. With the tailwind, reducing power somewhat (vs the headwind leg) is probably best. This would have the result of driving the outbound and inbound ground speed closer to each other than would a constant throttle position. My reasoning is that this is how you get maximum glide range in a glider in wind: Add half the wind speed to your best glide airspeed in a headwind, subtract half the wind speed with a tailwind until you get to the glider's min sink air speed, where you don't go any slower. The reasoning becomes obvious as a headwind gets stronger and stone: To make any forward progress at all may mean max forward airspeed (full power in the quad), and in a howling tailwind, the quads max range speed (in time aloft, which will be faster than a hover) will keep it aloft longer to take advantage of the tailwind. And I bet this could be approximated by equalizing the outbound and inbound ground speeds. Just a thought that I'm sure is valid to some degree.
Dont Forget that battery life doesn't include the Reserve to bring it back home... i would say its more like 20-24% battery life. so it can make its way back if someone pushes 19,000 feet.
Ok, so going out it had to climb and then go 17,200 feet and it used 33% battery. To come home it traveled the same distance but was descending and used 54% battery. Something tells me the battery % needs some improvement, surely it can calculate what has gone out and give a better reading?
Judging from this video, the Mavic Pro definitely reaches a further distance without any sort of signal loss compared to the Phantom 4, thanks to the new OcySync technology.
Shouldn't the tracker weight be centered? Though it didn't seem to effect the drone, but seems the rear motors would have to work a little harder with the weight at the rear.
Hi Tony Thanks for the video. I have had my MAVIC for about a week now and love it. My question is, What goggles are those you are using. in the beginning of the video, you mention putting them on while you where setting up to take off. You quickly see them laying on the curb pre flight. What 3rd party goggles work with the Mavic.
Good job and you have more guts than I have. I've gone way out there but no where near that far but I fly over recently cleared water district land to the east of me when attempting distance runs so it's easier to find. My Mavic has been shipped and due in 7-10 days so my P3A will be retiring I hope along side my P2. I'm hoping Flytrex will come up with an adapter for the Mavic as it saved me once already with the P2 when it took off, throttle wide open, on me for some unknown reason. Led me right to it. It was pretty much destroyed but the GoPro 3+ Black was undamaged. Glad to see you didn't violate any altitude restrictions on you record attempted flight. I did notice the spotters you had along the route. :)
I originally ordered on Oct. 15th at Amazon through the storefront for "Koonst" or something like that. Then they sent an email that DJI had delayed the shipment to Dec. I canceled that order. So I started looking around for other vendors on Amazon on Nov. 3 and just happened to come across one that had 2 left with shipping in 2 days. In 2 days I got a notice that it had shipped and expected delivery was Nov. 5th to Nov. 15th. Both orders were for the "Combo" package. When I checked the same page an hour later there was no more available until Dec. 15th. I think I was just lucky to come across that vendor on Amazon at the right time. However, they didn't issue a tracking number even though they say it shipped. So we will see.
I've never figured out how Amazon pops up different vendors for the same product. Sometimes it says to click for other suppliers but DJI products don't seem to do that. So try searching for other vendors randomly and maybe you can find one that has them in stock. From the Mavic Owners Forum they are saying the "combo" packages are delayed till 12/15 so many are just ordering the Mavic only from different suppliers. Try Best Buy too. They seem to keep track of how many are in stock and when new shipments are coming and they are usually correct according to reviews. I was just lucky that a different vendor popped up who had 2 in stock. It could have been because someone else cancelled. A lot of that is going on and frees one or two up. I buy through Amazon because I've never had a problem returning ANYTHING. You just need to be firm and they give way. :)
Great job; looks like that pretty much answers the "How far?" question for the Mavic Pro. Did you have emergency landing sites planned or just went for it?
I know from experience with my p3p if the smart rth tells you to go back.. you should listen. If attempting a real long range flight I think the best thing to do is to always start off flying into the wind so you can return home quicker. I would ideally attempt a long range flight into a really light headwind and not to fly long distances on windy days. Nice video!
hello awesome video!, were you seeing this live the whole time? or did the live video feed cut after a certain distance trvaled? also do you use any exterior equipment such as a range extender?
joey f Totally stock, no range extender. There was no video or controller loss during flight. The entire flight was recorded on the video, via screen recorder, original speed except 2x speed during music portion
How are these things today? Are there any consumer drones that you can do 10 miles with the right battery rig? What if you have small battery/LTE wifi hotpsot attached to one :)
Will it affect battery or flight time if you record 4k vs 1080p? I also can't wait to get a Mavic.. Also last question, what's your favorite flyer.. be it quadcopter or something else? Thanks Tony
Dire wolf I didn't record with drone camera in this video, used tablet screen recorder. however I do not think there's any battery difference between recording in 4k or other modes. and, I only fly quads now, have tried rc planes but like quads, much easier
Hi Tony - great videos as usual - quick question - how did u set off in Atti Mode when If there is GPS it will set to GPS mode as default ? - can atti mode be preset initially despite a good gps signal found ?
D J no, as I noted at start, there's no atti mode selectable in Mavic as in other dji drones so I was unable to test wind direction. Only time atti occurs with Mavic is when you lose gps, it's not a user option
Good day to you Tony. Me and my friend are just about to pre order the DJI Mavic Pro. I see you used a small GPS on the drone. Is the small picture on the right bottom of the screen is that the small GPS Tracker or is that part of the DJI Tracking system. Best Regards Michael
Michael Van Alphen the tracker, Trackimo, does not interface with the dji app. You access the gps tracking map provided by the Trackimo through a separate app on your phone, tablet, computer, etc. The location signal from the Trackimo can be accessed even if the drone gps and signal fails, drone flies away…
Carry on what you are doing buddy stupid drone police people commenting on here everyone in this world breaks the law eg people speeding. Some people here sounded like they have never ever broken any laws.
So here I am doing some research for a new drone and came across this video at random. What are the chances that as soon as the drone takes off, I recognize the location. This is awesome, and thanks for the range test.
Good afternoon. My Mavik arrives on Friday and I've been using the Glyph headset with my Inspire for some time. I've had very poor results with iOS (iPhone 6+, 9.7 iPad Pro, and iPad Mini 3, all with cellular service.) Can you please recommend the tablet you use and tell how you figure it to the Mavic? I assume you use the HDMI out of the tablet. Thanks!
rustysilverwings I use both ios, an Ipad Air, and Android, my Nvidia Shield and phones. I prefer the Navidia Shield hdmi port over the Inspire hdmi port because I like the mirrored screen on my googles instead of the on screen readout of the Inspire. On the Mavic you have no choice but to use the Nvidia Shield because there is no hdmi on the controller It is configured simply by hooking up the usb from the controller to the Shield and the hdmi from the Shield to the goggles. See my video ruclips.net/video/MX5kak0q45w/видео.html
Great Test Tony, hey had a question, how did you get the Avegant Glyph to work with the Mavic Pro, ... did you use them on the test flight... what cables did you uses, I have not received my Mavic, should be here soon ( SO THEY SAY )... but I have a pair of Avegant Glyph, and i was looking at the FPV's that DJI has, but I like to use my Avegant Glyph, thanks for you help and answering my quest.. there again.. GREAT TEST FLIGHT !!!!
Thanks Tony, what is the name and model of that tablet you connect your Avegant Glyph, I didn't see that listed in the video link you sent me. thanks again for your help
Brandon Yancey no app, just plugged up to my tablets hdmi, see ruclips.net/video/MX5kak0q45w/видео.html The Glyphs support headtracking, but no use with Mavic, camera doesn't pan, only tilts. I've tried headtracking with my Inspire, didn't work reliably and not worth the aggravation
The Inspire pan & tilt headtracking works just fine on my setup..... but the app, Cloudlight FPV, always freezes after a few minutes. I need to find a stable app that doesn't freeze...
Brandon Yancey I don't think it's the app, it worked fine on the bench for me, but would crash when using it, using Litchi or Go app. Tried several different types of usb splitters, finally gave up. Like the Glyphs otherwise
If you wanted to present this without all the menu bars showing? I understand the practically and importance but in the final post it would be nice to view without the menu, If you need that. Thanks! Good Job!
Tony had you added any range extenders to the mavic pro? Or was this the stock drone and controller that came out the box. I'm just wondering how you still had a live feed on your tablet that far out?
Chris Amirkhanian This was stock out the box. But a good location. at other locations with lots of interferences the range suffers, but the Mavic is still better than my Inspire 2
Hi Tony Griffis , is the experience with the Avegant Glyph headset a good one ? I was looking at them for a while now and still trying to make a decision , great stuff with the distance test ,thanks and take care .
The Glyphs are excellent. However, I haven't used mine in a long time, been flying with the Crystal Sky monitor. I think I will get my Glyphs out and try them again.
not to be a smart ass but it looks like the mavic warnings were spot on, not conservative as well. Good thing you turned it back when you did :) Great safe flight.
Is the Mavic camera better or at least as good as the phantom 3 pro camera? Is it as good as the phantom 4 camera (as far as low light or night shooting, etc)
chetmortenson92 I think the Mavic camera is as good as the P4, only problem is sun glare when flying into the sun, which is worse on the Mavic. I've tried filters but no success with reducing glare so I think a hood might work. I'm ok with it as is.
Great flight Tony. I could never get that google map to work on my android tablet. I tried everything. I even called DJI and got oh we don't support google map no more. Thanks for the footage and test. I have a simple channel in case your interested.
why do you need a trackamo? the drone has its own gps you can follow if it goes down as long as it has power. something tells me if it hits that hard your trackamo wont work either.
Order Mavic
goo.gl/9c42Qo
Order Trackimo
store.trackimo.com/?aff=170&
Nice flight, Main thing is you made it back
So could you fly the Mavic say 2 miles land it at a friends house then take off from their return back to you?
Hello. Could you please tell me how can I fly mine that far. Break it down for me please sir
Wow that was incredible! That really is in a different league. You went 3 miles out and came back and landed perfectly. Watching this was like I was there. Thank you.
i just unboxed mine! you cant contain the excitement! nothing beats the feeling of getting your first mavic pro
Well, Congratulations Tony because you and Michael Kincaid are the only ones going that far testing the range of MP ,great job !
Fidelito in South Florida 😎👍
I flew mine 1.2 miles and tried landing it at a desired spot, but when I got down so low, it lost signal and Return-to-Home kicked in and it came right back. So... it was scary that I lost signal but awesome seeing how good the RTH worked. The video is on my channel titled "DJI Mavic Pro / Range Test (1.2 Mile Flight!).
I don't know about that, theres a guy in florida that uses a mavic to chase cruise ships, he goes out pretty far.
Do you have a RUclips link?

Outstanding video and flight. Thanks so much for posting! I've been waiting for some real life, long range Mavic tests.
Great signal at 5km away!!! Can't wait to have one!!
Michele Vagnetti wie viel km hat des insgesamt Reichweite ich versteh den nicht ganz
Michele Vagnetti 17200 feet is only 3.25 miles
17200 ft = 3.26 m = 5.24 km
Michele Vagnetti was it controlled with wi-fi and live video stream to phone???
Cyrex Mavic uses Ocusync to transmit control and video via 2.8, not same as Lightbridge but similar to internet wifi, yes live video stream to tablet. For technical specs you need to go to DJI website
Not Sure if Anyone mentioned this but don't forget that there may have been a tail wind leaving and a headwind coming back and that will increase the ground speed going away but decrease the ground speed coming back. Mine arrives tomorrow!!!

Awesome video! Towards the end, I didn't breathe until you landed. Way to press the envelope!

I'm sure you know this, but if you tap the screen, the Mavic will focus sharpening the picture
Great test of the battery and range! Very informative. I ordered the Mavic too. It's nice to see its real world capabilities.
Great Range Test..That is the best I have seen thus far..Good thing you used sport mode to get out there faster..I was really suprised at the signal strength because I have watched other videos that lost alot of signal at just 1 mile.

You can't have it now the soonest would be in January 2017
richardoky why took so long?
They are shipping now.
Should get mine today (fingers crossed)
*see price*no thank you
Keep it up buddy doing good job screw the drone police.
Como não deixar um grande like no canal do amigo belas imagens continue assim meu amigo o que depende mim estamos juntos

Great video Tony!
This s the BEST video I have seen yet! I'm looking getting a drone and this was part of my educational lesson thanks!
My son just got his. I have been flying it. Since I fly racing drones I was a little skeptical about the range so your range test is interesting.
Absolutely Amazing!!!!! I cannot wait to get my DJI Mavic Pro!!!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!
Wow this is incredible just purchased mine today looking forward to starting to learn !
Fantastic safe flight thumbs up 👍
come check out my Solo 3DR video, it flew 40,000 foot.
That was really awesome, I'm buying one soon!
Awesome flight last few seconds had me on edge. LoL well Well Done. Subbed!
Nice range on stock
With fuel we use the one third rule. A third out, a third back. And a spare third for safety.
Wow great demo and distance. I guessed you would have 15 percent battery left when you were still mile and half out lol..Good job. Happy Flying !! GrampaKenCanada

Good concept but by time Mavic pro goes 4.3 miles there won't be enough battery to RTH ie return to take off point

what's carry a tracker got 2 do with what I said

Yup! Guy in the UK did 7.1km using aroung 40kph/ 25mph.......
"Sweaty Palms" I laughed so hard - Just got mine and I'm still scared to let it get outside of my yard
So excited to get my new Mavic for Christmas!

Thank you for the video. Question for you. Why did you chose a Mavic over the Phantom?
cnbsdad size, portability. I also have a P4, M100, I1, I2, Spark. For the money, Mavic is the best all around.
thats awesome range. its good to know that my company is selling that mavic pro and we can be proud of that
It depends on where u r to know how far it will go. My phantom 4 barely exceeds the mile mark and I live in Chicago Illinois.
Thanks for the video man. What is the model of the tracking device you use? Is it cellular or just some kind of VHF beacon.
Jesse Newell Trackimo, uses cell
What an amazing drone. Very smart, very stable.
Hello, please reply, what program do you use to break the distance, or what is the way. Thanks
Or did you buy your tracking device and how does it work?
Carry on what you are doing buddy stupid drone police people commenting on here everyone in this world breaks the law eg people speeding.
Some people here sounded like they have never ever broken any laws.
that music was so damn relaxing and fucking soothing I loved it so I subscribed and your videos are very nice;);););)
Nice video... What goggle using?
So here I am doing some research for a new drone and came across this video at random. What are the chances that as soon as the drone takes off, I recognize the location. This is awesome, and thanks for the range test.
Excellent 5.2km is excellent so the battery is the limitation
I get the same with my P4
epic video. Im still waiting on mine..... tell me what are the extention arms you used to allow a tablet? are they homemade or bought?
Michael's Opinion just ballpoint pens I had laying around, wrapped with velcro, see

thank you again Tony for advice, I think mavic best choice.
Volod Kesh You will be pleased. you can order at

Insane this drone is a dream
AWESOME VIDEO TONY!!!!
GREAT TEST FLIGHT !!!!

tony griffis can't click links. Just brings up comment screen. Put in description by chance please
Chris Hubbard It's a youtube video, "Goggles With a MavicPro" by me, look under my videos, link works for me
Thanks Tony, what is the name and model of that tablet you connect your Avegant Glyph, I didn't see that listed in the video link you sent me. thanks again for your help
Great video Tony. What app do you use with your goggles? Does the app have head tracking? Thanks
Brandon Yancey no app, just plugged up to my tablets hdmi, see
ruclips.net/video/MX5kak0q45w/видео.html
The Glyphs support headtracking, but no use with Mavic, camera doesn't pan, only tilts.
That's a nice flight with good HD signal strength! Did you use the standard default 5.8 GHz or the 2.4 GHz setting for range?
Drone Devices Std Ocusync which is 2.4gh
Thanks, now taking a closer look the Mavic only uses 2.4 GHz with no other option.
Thanks Tony, have you tried your Headplays with it ? Great vids.
DrDepth89 not yet, I hate wearing glasses. I did try the Cinimizer but still like Glyphs best
wow thats very impressive. Thank you for up loading this video im going to get my own mavic pro as soon as I can thank you.
If you wanted to present this without all the menu bars showing? I understand the practically and importance but in the final post it would be nice to view without the menu, If you need that. Thanks! Good Job!
Just bought mine today and I haven't flown it yet! I can't wait to try this!!!!
Amazing. Considering getting one. Thanks!
It is realy awsome drone, Thank's for sharing
Edge of my seat on the trip back lol
Can you give some tips to maximize signal strength at that distance?....did you mess with the settings at all?....seems I lose signal at 8k ft
With range like that you wouldn't want to lose it!
@@tonygriffis , ok ,thank you .
How did you hook up the Glyph goggles while still using the Mavic in RC mode? I was only able to use it in WiFi mode.
not to be a smart ass but it looks like the mavic warnings were spot on, not conservative as well.
Hola amigo.

Great flight Tony. I could never get that google map to work on my android tablet. I tried everything. I even called DJI and got oh we don't support google map no more. Thanks for the footage and test. I have a simple channel in case your interested.
My question is about your trackimo do you need cell service to use it?
Great vid. What app do you use to mirror your screen? Looks good
Dobes&Drones I used the screen recorder that comes with the Nvidia Shield tablet
Thank you!
why do you need a trackamo? the drone has its own gps you can follow if it goes down as long as it has power. something tells me if it hits that hard your trackamo wont work either.
