      I've seen elsewhere on RUclips that the gimbal camera cover isn't designed to stay on when flying since it blocks the air intake behind the camera which is used to cool down the internal components, there are two exhaust vents at the rear of the Mavic like a car that I've noticed on mine push out a lot of hot air. Down here in Florida you definitely want to have as much cooling capability when flying, maybe not so much in colder states like Ohio :-)

    • @FliteTest
      @FliteTest  7 лет назад +3

      @tim wells - Thanks for the feedback!
      - Little update: From what I have heard DJI has confirmed that the slit in the cover allows for airflow to cool the Mavic and is no longer an issue...

    There are vents and a cooling fan behind the gimbal. Leaving the plastic dome on the Mavic will run hot which will ultimately shorten the lifespan of the Mavic.

    • @JayHelms
      @JayHelms 7 лет назад +1

      Someone told me this and then I looked at the plastic bulb more closely and discovered there is a slot in the dome to allow proper air flow. Take a look and see if you agree. You may not. But I think that's what the slot is for.

      If you go to the DJI store and look at the listing for the gimbal cover at m.dji.com/product/mavic-gimbal-cover you can see it is made for "Protects gimbal and camera from collision, dust and water during transportation and in flight."

      Duck Landes Where I'm at here is 35℃+ so overheat might be a problem, but under normal conditions it gets enough air through the slit.

    Just a quick heads up you are improperly calibrating your compass. First do not have the remote and tablet near your Mavic while calibrating. Second you rotate the aircraft like there is a post in the center not in that circular patter you are doing. Also aircraft is not calibrated on it's side second calibration is done nose down! Look at the manual. You need to give out correct information Guys!

      I've forgot the gimbal clamp twice but I finally decided to quit using it and just use the cover. I bought an aluminum case that holds 3 batteries plus other accessories and don't throw it around so the gimbal only needs the clamp if you are traveling. Especially if you put it on the seat of your car and have to stop fast the whole case is going to jolt everything as it flies off the seat so the lock would be a good idea.

    • @kuenstrc
      @kuenstrc 7 лет назад +6

      I did the same thing and saw someone comment somewhere to attach a piece of ribbon on the clamp so you will see it and be reminded to remove it. That works well for me.

    • @jerryel2
      @jerryel2 7 лет назад +7

      Good idea. I have a "Remove Before Flight" ribbon that I used for a lens cover on the GoPro when I was flying the P2. Need to find it, drill a small hole, and attach it to the clamp. Oh my, advancing senility that comes with old age is a bxtch! Flew real planes for 30 years and RC for 40, seems I should be using a pre-flight check list. :)

    Thanks for a good video.
    I was told that the protective cover for the camera should always be removed before flight, because the drone has ventilation behind the camera, which will not work properly (since it blocks the airflow). So I always remove it.
    I would suggest u guys make a test, to actually see if the drone gets warmer? (with the cover on of course).

    I'm using a modified dome from F-Stop Labs which I purchased on Amazon. Yes, there are those who have 3D printed these, but wherever you get them, they work great to offer some degree of protection to the gimbal in a crash situation, as well as act like a lens shade when the angle of incidence of the sun is forward. I've only seen it get into the frame when in sport mode and only when radically moving side-to-side, quickly braking, etc. Great way to have the advantages of the dome and a lens shade, too. Basically, it stays on all the time and I store it with the rubber boot over it to protect the lens. Only remove it to take off and put on the gimbal clamp... Great vid! Thanks!

    Another video said that he got overheating with the plastic camera shield on. You can see the vent behind the camera. The shield restricts the air-flow. Sorry but I don't remember which video that was, but he did open the Mavic up to show the insides.

    • @Loz636
      @Loz636 7 лет назад +3

      Robert Shaver it has been confirmed by DJI that it's perfectly safe to fly with the gimbal cover on, it has a slot cut into it to allow air flow through for cooling - but initially this was a worry agreed

    • @bobclarie
      @bobclarie 7 лет назад +1

      I agree Robert, flying with the plastic camera shield on, will impede airflow for cooling, especially when flying in hot climates. Drone Valley did some temp. test regarding this. Bob

      Regardless of whether or not the dome lets in enough airflow to keep it cool, this really isn't very good optical plastic, causing more issues than not with the imagery. As bobclarie mentions, environment temperatures would make a big difference on whether or not to fly with it.

    • @davidb4775

      For beginners wanting the protection while learning to fly, would it be an option to drilling some holes through the plastic to increase airflow?

      tripod mode just makes it super slow and stable. so just pick a direction and fly there (using up almost a whole battery) and then speed up the footage. the cars look fast and the drone speed seems like a normal shot.

    I didn't read through all of the comments to see if this was mentioned or not, but just FYI, your compass calibration dance was different than what DJI's tutorial video mentions. During the second part, they recommend having the gimbal facing downwards. I have performed zero calibrations on my Mavic since receiving it, and have had no issues at all.

    Thanks for making this. It's helped me for the fact that I'm a novice to cinematic efforts using a drone.
    One thing I would have liked to see here, and please just take it as face value, is that since you talk about firmware updates, updates, updates is that you would have suggested using DJI Assistant 2 for an option or linked in the description as this makes it much easier to check updates. Using the controller alone will not always show them. That is something I've learned in different forums.
    Always looking forward to your videos.

    Great video guys. I didn't know about the USB connection to a tablet. Great tip. However, I disagree about leaving the camera protector on. It does make the footage look worse and it blocks air flow. There is a vent behind the camera where air should go in. The cover blocks it and can cause the Mavic to heat up more than it should. Any thoughts on this?
    Thanks for the video!

  • @JonathanMorley

    I'm used to dealing with manual camera settings as I used them with my DSLR all the time. The issue with this on the mavic is how well you can see the screen. Often before I even start to fly I'll sit the mavic on a flat surface and point it towards something (preferably a white object) so I can really dial in the white balance. I haven't done a lot of night flying but when I was trying to get a nice city horizon shot I ended up just setting everything to auto because there wasn't enough reference on the screen to really dial in the optimal manual settings.

  • @JeremyWesleyBR
    @JeremyWesleyBR 7 лет назад

    I think the last tip is more important that the credit its given. Leaving the clear cover on when you are not shooting video for a production is a really good idea. Especially if you are playing with the active track features. When doing anything that is more high risk, you should leave the cover on. If the mavic crashes, and the gimbal is not covered, its may get caught on something ( like a tree branch) and the weight of the mavic will break the gimbal mounting plate where the gimbal is attached. ( personal experience and there other others on youtube that have posted videos of the likes) There is no way to purchase only the plate from DJI, so it will cost you a refresh. If the Gimbal is covered its less likely to get caught on anything in a crash.

    shouldn t the cap for the gimbal be off otherwise there won t be enough air intake (the air intake is right behind the gimbal). you re in a snowy place so that probably doesn t matter too much, but for people in warmer places, having the cap on will overheat the motors.

      FilmTrain The best way is to set your camera for timed burst pictures (not video), then set a slow speed while using Tapfly, Orbit, or waypoint. You can try focusing pn one particular object, or a general area. You can play around with speed and altitude, but a constant altitude will be smoother. Even more options are available with some third party apps like Autopilot or Litchi. Hope that helps!

    Re; leaving or taking the cover off the camera - the fan intake is directly behind the camera, so if the cover is left on the fan can't suck cold air to cool down the heat sync, and may overheat!

    You sound very knowledgeable so can I please ask your advise re the mavic I have just got. The mavic box arrived a bit beaten up to begin with but it seemed ok inside. I started setting it up having watched loads of RUclips videos already so was quite informed re this procedure. I noticed that it didn't want any firmware updates at any stage and some other bits on the app set up were missing too. Once the app had started and it said ready to fly I had no view from the camera, just a black screen behind all the icons. I was told by DJI to use a different device so instead of my iPhone 7 plus I used my iPad Pro 9.7". No difference, the camera still didn't show a picture but I could hear it trying to focus continuously. I phoned DJI and they said it was just a software issue. So I did as they said and downgraded and then upgraded and for the first time I had firmware prompts so I thought all was well. Started it all up, said it was connected and ready to fly etc but still a damn annoying black screen! 3 firmware updates done in all but camera still not working. I tried to fly it and all I could do was very basic, no fly to home etc as the buttons did nothing. The gimbal is ok and moves correctly however. I followed DJIs request re e mailing proof of purchase and evidential photos and I'm 6 days on and dji still won't send a label to send it back as they won't make a decision on what's happening next so I am left in limbo and not happy at all! Have you any suggestions for both i.e. Software suggestions and how to get DJI to pull their finger out and do something. Thank you so much for your time. Regards Moira (have just subscribed)

    I've actually heard that the camera cover is not at all intended to be used during flight. The reason is that it traps the internal heat trying to escape through the front vent. Temperature readings of the underside have been taken both with the camera cover on and off immediately after flight and the temperature difference was significantly higher with the cover on. Do either of you know about this?

    Tip : If the drone does not hold it´s usual stable gps position it could also be that there are not enough visible satellites, so it may not be a compass error. This happened to me once, my Phantom3 Advanced was not hovering properly, so i checked UAVforecast and visible satellites were only 6 instead of the 15-20 average and there was a thick haze with blue sky above ( very strange weather). Thanks for the tips guys, enjoying your channel especially the drone vids :)

    The plastic cap on also has another (major) disatvantage - il blocks the front air intake into the cooling system. The mavic heats significantly more when flying with it on. I would not recommend it unless, maybe, flying through clouds (which I don't think it's recommended anyway).

    To zoom in/out you can just use pinch-in/pinch-out gesture at the middle of the screen. Its much faster than using 5d button.

    Watch youtube video on cutting out plastic dome at camera perimeters to remove plastic in front of lens to stop glare and the rubber guard still fits for transport.

    What are the gloves you're using that still work on touch screens?

    caution to leaving the clear cover on the mavic camera. great protection, however it does not allow the airflow into the unit properly and it could overheat. I left my cover on and the fan kicked up to high speed and i got a warning the the drone was over heating. I landed immediately. Note i just got my mavic and i absolutely love it.

    I love the Mavic Pro, the easiest drone to fly. I got it last week, with a couple youtube videos I was up on the air, it handles very easy. impressive footage, I did my editing with Final Cut. EASY!!!!! all done in the same day. I went hiking; my bottle water was heavier then my Mavic Pro. I LOVE IT, great work DJI.

    just be careful with the camera cover on, it prevents the vents from getting cooling air flow. Great video. thanks.

    there are some who have mentioned, that leaving the dome on, may cause it to run hotter, due to the air intakes being covered... FYI

    Hi I watched I think was Drone Valley and he said leaving the front cover on can cause overheating issues ?
    Also seen another tube vid where somebody modifies the cover to stop the pro's reflection by cutting a precise hole in it ?
    I enjoyed your video. I haven't ordered my Mavic yet still trying to convince myself to spend $2500.00 NZD for the combo.

    Great tips!... Thank you.... Just got the drone and I am am a newbie on drones... and I just can't figure how do I know if the Intelligent Battery firmware is up to date... A message popped up saying that the firmware has to be updated and so I did and was successful, but I was not sure really if the battery firmware also needs an update... and if so, what about the spare batteries?

    Hi those were really some good tips. One question you talked about zoom and if someone is taping and doesn’t want to hear the prop noise you keep the drone far and zoom, but I noticed when u click to zoom you can hear the peeps. Is there a way to mute these peeps? Thanks.

    Do you guys have any tips regarding maintenance? Meaning maintenance for the motors, oiling certain parts or stuff like that?
    Regularly aircrafts have some mandatory maintenance every certain amount of hours, just wondering if that is the case for the Mavic, and Drones in General.

    When you calibrate the compass shouldn't you rotate the craft around its axis rather than around your body? The image on the app seems to imply rotating the craft on its axis.

    It's my understanding that leaving the clear bubble cap will over heat the Mavic because you are blocking the air flow cooling system that is just behind the gimbal.

  • @frankyvee1

    How is Mavic's autopilot? I would like to use mine like the Hover Camera Passport when I'm on vacation to take selfie videos/pics. Is this easily doable or do I always need the remote handy?
