I just got my Mavic Pro about 4 days ago and I was just flying around in my backyard trying to get a feel for it before taking it out in the world when the app crashed and it immediately initiated the RTH sending it straight up into a tree. Pulling down on the stick did nothing and it just started to destroy the tree and eventually went like a missile into the ground. My heart stopped and I stood there looking at what I thought was the quickest $1,000 I have ever lost. Amazingly the Mavic is built very well and other than 2 of my props exploding and some dirt that needed to be cleaned off there wasn't a scratch on it. I spent the next 5 min. going through the menu and looking for that feature to be turned off so that wouldn't happen again.
I have since found myself creating a small pre-flight checklist to have with the drone before I set off so I remember to change the settings depending on my location and surroundings. I also suggest that everyone pay the extra $100 for the DJI Care Refresh as that will certainly give you a greater peace of mind when flying.

    • @Calibrator2010
      @Calibrator2010 7 лет назад +6

Cameron, good idea about the check list. You need to always remember to adjust your return to home altitude before each flight for the surroundings you will be in. You can stop the return to home on the controller even if the app crashes. There is a stop button on the controller that will make the Mavic hover in place at anytime.

    • @readysetdrone
      @readysetdrone  7 лет назад +1

The checklist is a great idea. Also - be sure your app is updated! Hope your later flights have been better! Thanks for watching.

  • @DFDuck55

The way you had your landing pad stakes they stick up quite a ways, high enough the rear props will hit them. If you put the stakes in the ground at an angle they won't stick up so high, and is usually easier to push in the ground. I always Move files off my SD card to the computer rather than Copy them, then I never have to worry about "did I copy them or not?" (on PC drag, press Shift, then drop.)

formatting the SD card doesn't need to be done every time you erase footage. It is a good practice and it only takes couple minutes to do but it's perfectly fine doing this once a month or so. It'll also prolong the life of your SD card.

Hey thanks for the tips...I justtttt got my mavic pro and veryyyy happy.. I'm kinda scared to start up up for the first time. I'm wondering about a fee things before I start up first time. First .. should i use remote only first and then once getbthe hang ..then connect tablet for video and all the fancy stuff....second .I'm wondering about the switch in the side by the sd card. It says wifi/Rc. Wondering what thats for..and when do I mess wirh it. And where does it need to be for startup. And lastly. Is there a video that walks a person like me thru turn on all the way thru to take off and flying.....im.sure I can figure it out but I finally got a mavic and I'll be dammed if I crash it right after I getbit in the air cuz I'm not sure what's going on. Haha. ..so anymore help other than what I've seen from u would be soooooo appreciated...Chris Patterson. Disabled/retired ..p.s...mainly i want to be able to take off and fly and impress my kid ..not crash and get laughed at. Not to mention the money and time it costed me. I'll never get another chance to own one. So I got to be sure and careful!:):) Thanks again

Not sure if someone has already said this, but you can leave the camera dome on during flight. DJI even recommends leaving it on, there is very very little chance of overheating. Of course you may want to take it off to prevent lense flare.

the gimbal cover has a slit on the side to draw air into the quad. I recommend drilling holes into the bottom of the cover or a single big hole to enhance ventilation. tip: start with a small bit and tape the area to prevent cracking the plastic.

One question, I am coming to US in October (from UK) and want to bring my Mavic (as you have way better beaches, bluer sea's and palm trees), do I need to register with FAA ahead if visiting? Also anyone know if I need to get permission from US customs, etc.

Just my thoughts, this camera does have AFC it’s it automatic, I’m a photographer and many cameras video have auto focus, now if they do it well is in question. I’ll start hitting more often because I’m not really happy with the sharpness of 4K video, even on my DJI Action 2 camera. Too bad DJI most likely won’t update the software anymore for the Mavic Pro, my brother gifted his older drone to me I’m just starting to get into it. Enjoying it a lot.

Thanks for the helpful tips! However keep in mind that this quad (as most quads do) uses LiPo batteries. Keeping them charged will shorten the lifespan of the batteries, and if you keep them charged in a (possibly hot) car, they can easily puff and be useless, or even be a fire hazard (this case is remote but not impossible).

great video. I do have a question that I can not seem to find. I was going to get a iPod touch 6th gen for the controller so i do not have to take my phone in and out of the controller. I learned that the map option wont work since no GPS. So i was wondering if a old iPhone that has no active service from a cell provider would work to avoid this?

  • @brentbouler1964
    @brentbouler1964 6 лет назад

Great tips, but I have some comments about some of them.
Tip #1 There are camera covers available that are open on the front for cooling. They are called 'glare shields'. They will provide some gimbal protection, in case of a rough landing, and still allow proper cooling.
Tip #3 Don't forget that with foam inserts (or anything like that), you can cut out material as needed to better fit your equipment. It's yours, customize it to suit you.
Tip #10 If you do fly frequently, then certainly keep your batteries fully charged. But if you are going to store the drone for an extended time (like 1 month or more), it's recommended to keep them charged to only 50% for best battery life.

Yes, be careful hand catching. BTW, when catching the P4 you can be safer than you demonstrated.
    1. Never grab the P4 with your fingers on the stick. The craft should not be moving when you grab it.
    2. Hover the craft 1' above your head, about 5' away.
    3. After the hover proves stable, with your hand OFF THE STICKS, slowly walk to the drone and grab a leg.
    4. With a firm grip on a leg, hold it above your head in place and THEN touch the left stick, full down to turn off.
    5. AFTER motors turn off above your head, then lower the drone down to turn off the battery.

There is a backside of every coin. Also with DJI and its drones.
They are fabulous, absolutely. Five big stars for the product.
But if you have problem and need repair, DJI doesn’t even deserve one star.
Before you can ship your drone for repair, you have to go through the most draconian DJI procedures, which looks like they are engineered, not in order to support you, but in order to keep you at bay.
One thing weird DJI ask for before they even consider your drone for warranted service is that you download files from the drone - in my case 26 MB - and upload them to one of their sites.
The procedure is very complicated and time absorbing, and it is almost impossible to figure out how to do it.
Can you imagine what would happen if BMW asked you to bring your laptop to your carport and then connect it to the inboard computer in the cars engine room.
And then upload it to a BMW server.
And if you didn’t do that, they would’nt even consider to service your BMW.
    There would be uproar.
This is however one of DJI’s tricks to obstruct you.
It took an IT-pro and myself three hours to figure out how to send the files to DJI, just to run into the fact that the DJI site did not want to accept my password.
The site said “we will send you a new password.”
We tried several times, they never send a new password.
You can not return a drone to DJI if you haven’t kept the original box.
You can not deliver a drone yourself to their service-center.
I have bought a protection plan, they couldn't care less.
I did send all facts and a serial number one month ago.
Suddenly they ask for copy of invoice and a serial number.
Today they ask for a tracking number.
It always back to step one with DJI.
And most of the communication with them is with a robot which tell you to go to their website.
They spam you with robot answers and you get nowhere.
My crash was 9 February and I still haven't been able to fulfil all their demands to service my drone.
However I have got 16 emails from DJI where they ask me how I value their service.
Needless to say not very high.
And do not buy a protection plan where they promise you replacement two times if you crash your Mavic.
Too good to be true, but expensive.

Hello, I really appreciated your video, I'm doing a similar one in Italian for all the mavic owners who don't understand English, I hope you agree and forgive me if I steal some seconds of footage from yours (for example, the sequence where you show the Return to home setting or the landing pad), I will put a disclaimer writing on the Trail titles.... Thanks a lot, and congrats for your precious videos.....

If you made the landing pad out of antistatic foam, it might eliminate muli pathing errors from the satelite signal.

Buying landing gear I think is a must also. There's not much clearance from the ground to the camera. I prefer the three-piece landing gear.

I have drilled a 20mm hole into the flat right side of the gimbal cover to ensure enough aitflow while the cover is attached.

Gerd Staudenmaier That hole will help slow down the overheating process. If the vents are not wide open, they are restricted. This may not hurt the machine for certain, but it may.

About the manual focus ... I think dji fixed that with the DJI go4 app, it's now auto focus.

Did you use a plain printed label for your FAA number or something permanent? I'm getting mine soon, and saw where they want you to permanently affix it to the drone, either with a permanent label or engraved and im not too keen on doing that since I might sell it in the future if I upgrade to a better one.

Nice tips but just don't fly indoors. My new Mavic came crashing down within one or two second it took off. I tried to save it by catching it, but was rather too late and one of the propellers took a good chip of my fingernail. I am not sure why it drifted, probably the ambient light is too low for the sensors.

Is this a great drone to start out with? It might be on the expensive side, but would you say someone who don't have a drone and know how to fly this should get it as their first?
    I'm not quite sure.

Many thanks for posting these great tips. Especially agree with the hand catching part, wished I'd watched your video earlier, I hand caught my Mavic, it bites hard, nearly tore a fingernail off!
