    Hopefully the next one will be more of a traditional pattern.The RRR line looks good with materials and craftsmanship,put it to what people want.Barlow with spear point with those materials would be great or make a nice jack or equal end.
    Keep the niche knives to the other Rough Rider line.Thks for the video.

    Couldn’t agree more that with a couple changes that bar back could be an amazing pattern. If they just made it a single blade wharncliffe I’d be in love with it. As for the Easy Open Razor, I do like mine but would buy it again with a different blade in the same handle. Throw a wharncliffe in that one and you’ve got a salute to the Northwoods Michigan Jack. They are certainly well built so I’ll keep buying them if only to support the brand while they work out the kinks!

Oh I forgot about the monkey wrench knife. They are perfect companions for the Barback. If they made those modifications to the Barback they would have a much easier functioning knife. I thought “Edsel” would be a good moniker. It’s like cult movies. Some times they are so bad they get a life of their own.
      The Edsel has been a very popular car for a long time simply because they were a flop. But if you’re going to a car show, who doesn’t want to see a perfectly restored Edsel ? And part of the mystique is it’s utter failure as a design when released.

    What never fails watching you videos is you whip out some knife I never saw before; and the ones you have so far shown cased; exceeded all videos in the past .Now days a lot of wine used in restaurants comes from boxes and bottles with twist off lids. The trend now; is to open wine bottles with corks is using a CO2 opener that pushes out the cork with pressure from inside the bottle. It is supposed to keep the wine from being contaminated from the cork. If you use a traditional corkscrew on a $200 dollar bottle of wine you don’t want to screw it up opening it. Maybe this is not such a bad Bartenders knife after all. I don’t think it needs to go into the bad design box just yet.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 года назад +1

      Interesting thought in modern opening techniques as well as typical bar wine. I collect bartender knives and waiter tools and as a subset of my knife collection. Strangely the corkscrew in my kitchen is much more practical than any of these tools. But I still try the olds one now and then just do I can how well they work. Some absolutely suck!

      Every time I pick up that RRR I shake my head and wonder why I bought it. It really isn’t worth $50. Truly just a novelty. I feel like I was ripped off! I will be very wary of anything else in the RRR line up. As I’ve said a couple times. Others try to compare these to GECs. I see them as what they are. A limited Run Rough Ryder with what should’ve better QC and better materials. D2is a step up. Micarta not so much. What’s more I want to see brass liners.

    As an automotive guy, I'd say yes, this was the '59 Edsel (not the '58...the '58 had WAY more problems). But for different reasons. The '59 Edsel compared to the hideous '58 was the "blah" Edsel. It was just odd enough that it got some interest, but was otherwise in all but one case competing internally with high-end Fords and low-end Mercurys. It was neither hideous like the '58, but nor was it the beautiful and tragic 1960 Edsel (GM admitted they ripped off the Pontiac grille for that coming decade from the '60 Edsel, and c'mon, most of us love sixties Pontiacs). Why get a low-end Edsel when you could buy a Ford Sunliner? Why get a high-end Edsel when you could get a low-end Mercury? DeSoto had the same problem with internal competition in 1959 and 1960 with Dodge and Chrysler, and that was tragic, because the DeSoto Sportsman from those years was one of the most beautiful cars of its era; it was just that DeSoto rebranded into the "sport and luxury" brand that GM had with Oldsmobile at the worst possible time. Anyone with an appreciation for late fifties cars and functional eyes knows the DeSoto from that era was a beautiful expression of Virgil Exner's design language. But the '59 Edsel was the ultimate "blah" car of its era that tried doing something a little different, but not a lot different. And that was fatal to the brand; when the '60 Edsel Ranger and Villager station wagon came along and people thought it was a truly gorgeous car...nobody was willing to try it because the '58 was a disaster and the '59 was blah.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the lessons on late 50s automobiles. I think the 59 Edsel Grill has a certain charm but it was no 1959 Chevrolet Impala. The 60 Edsel was a major improvement. And yeah, I can see the Pontiac Rip-off. I guess the Edsel was full of misplaced potential and that does describe this knife.

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias Happy to share my automotive knowledge! I was very good friends with Dick Browne, a gentleman who was basically the mover and shaker in Chrysler's Overseas Division beginning around 1959. Dick in turn introduced me to some of his old competition and they all said it: GM realized the potential for the grille, which they initially stayed away from in 1961 and 1962 because they figured "okay, they're still releasing a nominal Edsel" (the Comet...it wasn't formally the Mercury Comet until I think '64; it was supposed to be released as an Edsel). As the Comet moved away from split grilles immediately--and it was a looker, just not one styled the way GM thought it would be--they realized MOPAR was committed to Virgil Exner's Forward Look and continuously evolving that, so they figured "pfft, they just designed our grille for us!" And that shows up in the less exaggerated, more tastefully done 1963 Pontiac grilles ('62 looked pretty good too, but they just put it in as a stopgap, particularly with the Catalina, which was what their original "answer" to the Edsel looked like).
      The Edsel WAS full of potential, and that includes the Comet, which was basically an up-engined Ford Falcon with nice trim scheduled to be released as an Edsel (if you ever see the factory keyring, it's literally the Edsel keyring with the center bar on the "E" removed! You can even see an uneven area on the casting where it was supposed to be!). By 1960, they simultaneously had figured the brand out, had it no longer internally competing...and realized they had to kill it, all in the same motion. The Bar Back is likewise internally competing with both the Common Stock and the Bartender's Knife, and unlike the DeSoto where people were still buying them and it was more on MOPAR for a badly-timed rebrand (which is to say, competing with Oldsmobile all of a sudden rather than Buick) that was frankly a systemic issue*, the Bar Back, like Edsel, also has issues with the design itself, not just its marketing.
      *MOPAR had literal five-year plans for their car brands. Dick used to joke that he wondered if that's why Joseph McCarthy always drove GMs and Fords.

    The whittler.... Is it only named the whittler for the pattern, or can you really whittle with it? It seems way to big and to thick for actual whittling, to me.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 года назад +1

      Whittler does refer to a pattern. Typically the larger frame whittlers, especially those with a coping blade are some times called a "Carpenter's Whittler" as they were popular among cabinet makers. Essentially the blades on a whittler are normally more useful for wood work than other chores such as skinning animals. This is alos why the blade at the top often is hel in place with two springs; as it is designed for heavy cuts into wood.

    Looks like this Edsel is followed by yet another Edsel in the form of the RRR Rhino Toe. For me the other RRR Edsel is the Kayak, for a canoe design, there is a large gap between the ends of the blades and the bolster, such that there is a pocket shredder on both ends of the canoe. Which to me means whoever designed the Kayak literally missed the entire point of the canoe design, which is to have a completely smooth knife when the blades are all closed. Sigh, I will no longer buy Rough Ryder Reserve knives before seeing reviews.

    Frankly, that Bar Back just looks like a half baked design. I would say they completely missed the mark. Just looking at it I can see it would be extremely uncomfortable to work with the spear blade having that much blade sticking out of the handle. The wasted space just shows the failure to really hash out the design. I would call a Swisschamp more practical as a bar or fishing tool than any of those.

    I'm unconvinced by this RRR range. The easy-open razor is okay, but the multi-bladed knives are a failure to my eye. Too much trying to be different just for the hell of it, and MUCH TOO FAT - you could fit four blades into the well of the Kayak, which I returned the day I received it. Thank you for highlighting the excessive girth, I was getting laughed at for pointing it out when these monsters first appeared. There is no elegance here, and not much practicality either.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  3 года назад +1

      Hopefully they will get their act straight. I think many folks are looking for a more refinement, tighter quality control, and classic traditional patterns you don't see every day. I missed the brass liners, and would like to see top quality woods and natural materials but apparently they wood will shrink coming across the ocean! And my feeling is as much as they want us to compare the RR-Reserves to Great Eastern they are ultimately going to be compared to other Rough Ryders. D2 blades and Micarta handles coming out of China are not going to be enough to sustain the Reserve line up, especially when you can D2 blades on knives at half the price and Micarta has becomes as common as dirt.
