Star Trek: Police Ship overview

- This is an overview of a small ship we used in our first FASA Star Trek TTRPG campaign. This is a complete rebuild of the model i posted several years ago, and more accurately represents the original design.
I send a sincere "Thank you!" to the following creators for access to their models:
TOS Bridge Set, TOS Transporter Set by PTrope
Constitution Class, K-7 Space Station, SNW Shuttle by metlesitsfleetyards Кино
Okay, this really makes me think of Mister McHale and his PT 73.
LOL! thank you very much!
It's kinda like a federation pontoon boat looking like a fed/klingon ship mashed configuration it's interesting
Thank you!
I like the idea of the patrol ship. Bigger and more powerful then a runabout
thank you!
I like it, like Starfleet’s coastguard
very much like that! thanks!
This definitely looks like a pre-Runabout TOS era type of scout/light patrol ship.
What game did you say this was based on?
This was for the FASA Star Trek RPG back in the early 1980s
There's a version of this type in Star Fleet Battles tabletop game🤓
SFB is an inspiration, as i explain in the video,
Very nice.
thank you!
Does Mr. Peabody’s planet have a moon named Sherman?
LOL! Sherman's Planet is near Station K-7
Nice Design
Thank you very much!
Nifty.
Thank you!
Is Mr. Peabody's planet near Sherman's Planet? Thinking about it takes me back...Way back.
you are the first to get that joke! :) Thank you very much! :D
You Just Had to go There!!! 🙄😒🤨
OH, I get it now. 🤣😂🤣😂
Pretty cool design and interesting theory of having policing ship. I agree with the other comment that it would be more like coast guard as policing is more for civilian purposes, whereas coast guard is more immediate close proximity defence, search, and rescue. Also, why would these ships occupy valuable space inside the space station pod? It's space, they can simply remain in orbit of the station and patrol the immediate vicinity.
Great job well done!
Thank you!
They need something to make sure Cyrano Jones carries out his sentence as ordered.
Indeed Cyrano Jones made a guest appearance in our campaign and we arrested him on the spot. Thanks! :)
Would this be similar to a Runabout?
it's size is between DS9-USS Defiant and a runabout
Runabouts are about 23 meters long, while this Police Ship is 52 meters. The Defiant is approx. 120m & the Klingon Bird-of-Prey/B'rel-class is 110 meters.
For a ship that small, it would make more sense for it to operate in pairs of a wing of 3 or 4 ships. Two ships on patrol, one held in reserve.
Each K class station (7,8 &9) had three police ships .
Similar (but extended) function to the old 22nd century Archers and Currans. Nice design, too.
thank you!
When do we see an antiprotion cannon reverse engineered from the (hopefully) extra galactic doomsday drone mounted to a starship?
We did reverse engineer a weapon from alien tech to foil a nefarious plot
Epic!
thank you very much!
@@Zoxesyr Aye! I love that hull shape :D
Seems "coast guard" is a more accurate discription than "police".
we considered that, but went with the name from Star Fleet Battles instead.
Wouldn’t the Oberth Class Science ships would be retrofitted with decent shields and ablative hull armor as rechristened as First Responder ⛑️ Ships..?
This is about 20 years before the Oberth, so it's possible.
@@Zoxesyr Oh ok, thanks for clarifying
It's a good ship class, and an excellent example of Starfleet engineers working within and to the technological limitations of the mid-2200's. I am a little surprised that the ship wasn't retrofit with some kind of tethered berth for a shuttlepod. She's obviously too small to carry full-sized shuttles, but short-range shuttlepods like those used in Federation drydocks are only a little larger than a car, AFAICR.
I would say "cut a hatch in her keel plates and hang the pod off the bottom," but 23rd-century warp tech was supposed to require clear lines between nacelles. Putting a pod there would cripple the ship. Either way, even without a tender craft that can move independently of the first response ship this is a good design for (relatively) short-range adventures.
What was her cruising warp speed, and how many crew did she require to function at full capacity?
It has two class F shuttles, customized for space rescue. They are in a small bay in the underside of the ship. I forgot to include them in this video. They do not block the LOS of the nacelles.
Cruising Warp Factor 5, Emergency Warp Factor 7
Minimum crew 5, standard crew 10
@@Zoxesyr Oh, that is all just perfect. I totally want one of these craft for sector patrols and rescue missions. The shuttles even have enough capacity to fully evacuate the crew in an emergency.
Well done!
Why only 2 tactical, 8 minimum especially for a police ship.
It's main job is rescue, not combat. Also we only had two players who had tactical training :D
These ships might be good against civilian small craft, but they will fall quickly against a warship that approaches them in a threatening manner, unless they are packing massive firepower in a small package, like the USS Defiant from DS9, and even that was a difficult feat for Starfleet to pull off.
you are correct that these are not meant to confront capital ships. That's kind of the point of having them
These are in my headcanon now!
I'm adding them to my Bartman Republic setting, where there's A LOT of TOS/TAS-era ships & Phase II/TMP variants unique to the setting.
I've begun making new classes derived from the Daedalus class, the 111 meter Boimler-class Light Scout & the 150-meter Bartman-class Cruiser. Ships built or retrofitted by BartmanTech have Yellow Phasers, while ships bought from other shipyards have Blue or Orange.
Do you have the full writeup posted somewhere?
this is the only published explanation, so far
Would The Police Ships predate the Runabouts?
yes, by about 50-60 years, if i have the timeline correct
@@Zoxesyr Thanks. I was curious about the history of the Oberth and Danube Class ships… I would feel the need to make a Nova Class for First Responder duties.
Nice job! How large is this design compared to the Vulcan Surak shuttle / transport?
saucer is only one deck thick at the rim, so the shuttle could dock with the airlock doors shown. the warp sled is probably a little shorter than the ships warp nacelles.
Good work! This looks like it would be a fun game to play.
Your designs and model are cohesive in appearance and also evocative of the era of Spock and Kirk.
My favourite is Star Trek : The Original Series. I am learning to build 3D models and have shared a model for a TOS-inspired 4-deck science vessel I call the “Sparrow Class” U.S.S. Vortex NCC-973. It’s sort of a “mini-Enterprise “ or “Mini-‘prise”.

I could envision my model existing in your game environment.
Thanks for the fun share.
See you “Out There”!
Thank you very much! I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your great work.
This was a fun ship to play in a TTRPG. We were almost like DS9 but in the very early 80's.
