- In season 4, episode 19, ATP World Tour Uncovered presented by Rio catches up with 14-time major champion Pete Sampras, who reveals to Justin Gimelstob the advice he gave Novak Djokovic when the Serbian became World No. 1 last July.
I always liked Pete because he wasn't a bullshitter, he just did what he was supposed to do.
Pete and Nole both great, on and off the court.
Pete at 4:17 (in 2012): “Next 4-5 yrs is Djoko’s prime”
Djoko in 2020: “You meant next 14-15yrs right?”
🤣🤣🤣
That's what is so incredibly going strong even in 2022 going into Roland Garros 🤔 But the question is can he delay Carlos Alcaraz coming out Party 🎉🎉🎉🎉
@@MrBjorn6 Currently, prime Novak vs prime (future) Carlos = Novak will always win, not saying that Carlos is not an excellent tennis player at his current age, just saying that..to be a legend first you need to beat yourselves, there was many talents in tennis history, but just a few of them were able to beat themselves first, and that`s the difference between legends and really good talents, time will tell
WAY better nutrition and training and treatment available to him than any past player had, so Pete could never have predicted that big 3 would play this long.
Who would have known that by 2021, Novak would be the player with the most weeks at no1 in history, have six year end no 1 finishes and 18 grand slams. But hats off to Sampras, without his contributions to the sport none of the big three would be this great. What a legend both Sampras and Djokovic are.
make it 20GS.
@@shikhargovil9579 and still counting as well.
@@Ultimate.Tennis very true, here we are in the begining of 2023 with 22 GS and 375 Weeks as No.1, and still counting

Sampras doesn't get enough respect because of his personality but he certainly is the best or one of top 3 best players of all time. No doubt about it.
Seeing Sampras happy in those quick cuts from his glory days makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Wish he still had that light in his eyes.
FEDERER THEN NADAL THEN DJOKOVIC
rog nad come on man ?
1 Sampras 2 Borg 3 Djokovic (Will move up in the next few years)
Farid Damasio And what about his personality?Great player and athlete, serious and respectful, also entertaining to watch because of his attacking style, running forehand and smash are of the greatest shouts in history, most of today players idolized him,Rog and Nole included.
Sampras play boring pusyy serve voley teniss, thats whay most people dont like him,in this era he will have 2,3 gs
wow, this is Nole's idol , his inspiration saying all this great things about him ! the first tennis match Nole watched was Pete Sampras Wimbledon grand final and it's so inspiring seeing Nole's inspiration talking about him in a great way !
Believe it or not, it is because of watching Pete Sampras back in the summer of 1995 that motivated me to continue playing tennis up til this point. Guys like Pete Sampras, Patrick Rafter, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Goran Ivanisevic, and Richard Krajicek were some of the best players back in the 90's era and I will never forget them.
Present legend on future legend
Two Goats
Pete Sampras, the most talented player of all time:
- No one else won so much (without having a losing record against key rivals!)
- No one else has ever dominated while playing with the most difficult equipment (the famous 14 oz, 85 sq inch Wilson which is brutal to play with).
Pete was always my fav.....now this era it's Novak. 2 great champions.
2020 ...and 17 Grand slams , , Novak for GOAT ❤️👍
Make that 19

That was some valuable input from Pete.
"you're 24, this is your prime real estate for the next 4-5 years". insane that he's still doing it 12 years after this interview
"I don't think of myself as anything impressive, just a guy that put up some numbers.... 14 majors"
The big 3 humbled him for sure. Probably thought 'No way anyone is going to catch up with 14 in this lifetime- in this hyper competitive young man's sport...' (At least back then)
@@Dman9fp i didn't think anyone would he close. When he won there was a streak of eight slams with eight different winners
Now: 20🏆‼️😘❤️🍀💪🏼
20 Grand Slams….just wow 🤩
You were right about 4-5 years. His spot in the #1 is clearly starting to get challenged.
Funny what a year can do. The Goat is back.
Oh wow, didn't know that thanks for the information!
Sampras GOAT, and looking hot here!
that was me quoting nadal, not my actual opinion (in case there was any confusion). There are still some guys to watch these days that have a lot of variety: Kohlscrieber, Dolgopolov, Paire, Dimitrov, Federer, LLodra, Gasquet, Tsonga, Haas... etc.
Would have been so badass if PETE stayed fit and trained regularly in his 30s so he could play a serious exho against Fed, Rafa and Nole. I know he had a series of exhos against Rog, but would have been cool to see how his game would match up against the other two - and if his advice about charging the net against Nole would be effective. *sigh*
Can anyone comment on the name of the song at the intro of this interview?
Thank You/Хвала
He's going to surpass you as one of the greatest
he already has.
He jsut did ;)
He did a while ago
Anyone noticed that Sampras never in the interview mentioned Nadal by name =p haha!!!
A little bit maybe yes
wow he said that? Interesting. Where did ya see that>
720p PLEASE!
...i don't Sampras is being serious...the way he played wasn't boring by all means! take his matches against Agassi! can you call those boring? ...i think with what he said he just wanted to pay respect to today's tennis and its champions, but its not his real opinion it cannot be!...player, who dominated the whole 90's era cannot seriously think that tennis of that era he played in was boring!...end of story!...
Nas Nole.
Ah ok, I didnt realise that you were quoting Nadal. That would explain the quotation marks I didnt realise were there the first time :P
I cant say I agree about the variation aspect. I mean, yes, some players do more than others, but it just pales in comparison in my opinion.
Intro song PLS, i cant find the name anywhere.
I'm sure he doesn't like Nadal after what Nadal said about Pete's era not really being tennis because the points were so short.
sampras and federer are the greattest players for me
Srbi, ajmo palac gore za brata NOVAKA!!!!!
Sampras never talks about Nadal, I wonder why :D
fast forward to 2023. Novak has 22 gs
google "nadal on sampras"
who is nadal?
what did he say?
hello Novak Goodbye Nadal
Nadal should learn one thing - long rally, doesn't equals GREAT rally...you can put just as much creativity into short rally as into long rally! it all depends on performance!...Nadal is simply stupid for saying it (if thats true and thats what he said!...)...
Calling yourself humble. Yep, very humble.
and now he beats sampras all time greatest
dude get over it. He just kept it simple..haha
I for one cannot watch modern tennis. What you call enjoyable, I call monotonous. The variety in the game is gone and that makes it boring for me.
Granted, I think tennis was most exciting in the 80s, but I would still take 90s tennis ahead of today without a moment's hesitation.
“Personally, to watch a Pete Sampras versus Goran Ivanisevic match, or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable. It's not really tennis, it is a few swings of the racquet. It was less eye-catching than what we do now. Everyone enjoys the tennis we play much more. I am not saying we are playing better tennis, just more enjoyable tennis. For me, in the past it was just serve, serve, serve."
Sampras is the most boring champ ever!
