I am curious what anti-audiobook people would think of braille books and whether they count because technically they are read via by touch and not sight.
I think maybe the difference would be that in a Braille book you're still perceiving the text directly, words to your brain without anything in between. In an audiobook you have a stage in between which is the voice of the person that reads it on the recording. That makes for a different perception of the book because you already get it with certain voices and inflections and a fixed pace. So I'd say that an Audio book is more of a different medium than a Braille book. I don't actually think it matters whether one actually calls listening to audiobooks reading or not, it becomes ableist once you attach a judgement to the term, when you insinuate that one is lesser than the other. But tbh saying "I read the audiobook" just sounds like incorrect grammar 😅 There's a stigma attached to it that's basically "audiobooks are just for lazy people" and that is the ableist part that needs to die.
@@Phelie315 This was so well said! I think part of the difference is that reading has two parts to it, the decoding part where you "read" the letters and figure out how the sounds work to make words, and the comprehension part where you use the words to make meaning. The whole controversy with audiobooks is that it's missing that first part. Especially when younger, I feel the decoding aspect is necessary for most people, as learning how to read is essential in our world (as our world is structured around the majority). Which is why I feel sometimes an audiobook isn't as respected. However, once you know how to read, it doesn't really matter, and even if your still learning, the comprehension part is just as necessary to practice. And if you're reading for fun, who really cares.
I don't object to ppl counting audiobooks as read books, but for me personally they're more like radio drama. I'm very visually orientated & listening is completely different to reading with eyes, I have trouble remembering things I've only heard, fact or fiction, I can't concentrate as well etc. Again, this is just me, so I'm not saying audio books aren't reading.
I listen to audio books when I'm traveling since reading while on a moving vehicle could damage your eyes. I don't know about other people but when I listen to audio books, I see the words flashing in my mind alongside the imagery it creates. Say, a marshmallow was mentioned, I'd depict the full word marshmallow and somewhere mixed with that is the actual image of a marshmallow.

I don't think it's wrong to say you've listened to an audiobook. It kind of annoys me when people say they're reading an audiobook... you just can't 🤦🏻♀️ you can still enjoy books however you want but you can't read sound and that's okay there's no shame in listening to a book. @@Bear_the_shepherd Oh, that makes perfect sense! It has less to do with the action and more to do with the point that you have "read the story". As a severely dyslexic person who has had more breakdowns over reading physical books than I can count, thank you for including audio books as reading. Ever since I discovered them I have turned into a book worm and love reading! I went from reading 4 books a year to over 20. It took me way too long to learn that audio books are valid and I shouldn't be having a break down every time I had to physically read a book and there was a way I could enjoy reading. I literally thought I was cheating for years because it wasn't taking me an hour to read 15-20 pages and wasn't crying. So thank you :)
The thing with the percy jackson movies is that if you saw the movies and havent read the books then the movie seems really good but once you read the book you start to see the flaws in the movie so I would have stayed neutral even though I really love the books

Lol I’ve been thinking of a definition for reading books. the visual or audio consumption of either 1) a fictional narrative that consists of characters and a plot or 2) a non-fiction, organized narrative that aims to inform its audience on a real-life subject. Needs some work though because it does put things like theater plays and scripts in an awkward spot.
Hi, I'm a reader who really enjoys classics, and it kind of makes me sad to see that so many people think they're worthless. Personally, I feel like although they are definitely not for everyone, they all have a reason for being so important over time. To me, although I find genres like sci-fi and YA entertaining, and many are very well-written, most of them don't resonate with me as much or hold as much intellectual and cultural depth as many classics do. I think objectively speaking, lots of classics are some of the best books of all time, simply because they could withstand the test of it and still invoke important discussions and interesting ideas to this day, as well as personally touch many readers through sheer gorgeous writing. They have an amazing power that while they don't always entertain everyone (they do for me, but some can be slowly paced) they always have the ability to make a person think. It pains me to see that a lot of people who read classics don't read them because they really think they will enjoy them, but simply because they have had to for school or because they are acclaimed titles. I think that a popular misconception with classics is that they are for everyone and will be accessible to people at every point in their lives, and that simply isn't true. Most people don't like them, and that doesn't mean those people are shallow or don't appreciate good literature, it just means the genre (or sometimes just the book) does not interest them, and that's okay. I usually find this to be the case with YA or fantasy readers, as although quality is important and evident in those genres, a lot of people go into those for the escapism, which isn't usually something classics provide. I like to think that instead of sucking you into a reality, classics subtly punch you with truths of reality through a different lens. Again, I'm not saying that if you hate one classic you will automatically hate all of them. I just think that in general (and especially in the booktube community) people try to read classics when it's clearly not their thing because of feeling pressured to do so, and then bash on them when it was kind of doomed from the beginning. I'm not saying you should never read a classic again because you have this opinion (actually, I wish more people would seek out classics they would enjoy or try to see classics as not just entertainment but important literature that can teach you a lot about yourself if you look for it), but maybe at this time in your life right now, the genre is not valuable to you. Sorry for the rant, I just hate it when people think classics are overrated when in fact they are becoming widely (and in my opinion undeservedly) hated. So to anyone who has read this far in my love letter to classics: give them a chance. If you don't like them, that's perfectly okay and you shouldn't feel ashamed! But please be a little more objective, and think about whether the book is truly bad, or if it's just was not it for you, even though that's hard to admit sometimes. I believe at some point in your life, if you open up to classics, they will teach you something about yourself and others that you never could have imagined. There's a reason they are so acclaimed, even if not entertaining to you at this time in your life. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's bad. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you never will. Just because I like it, doesn't mean you have to. Just because any of us like or don't like a book, doesn't mean it's not objectively good, bad, or impactful.
as a blind reader, to suggest i don’t actually read books because i can’t use my eyes to read is incredibly ablest. listening to the audiobook counts as reading the book! so thank you, jesse for pointing that out :)

On the audiobook comment, YES! It is ableist to say it isn't reading. Thank you for mentioning that. those quizzes were fun. I got all the covers right too and haven't read most of them...and I am Rory Gilmore apparently, sounds about right lol
"Back when there were no vampires roaming about" 😅

I like to read on my bed. I’d choose the books store owner too since I work in retail. I use a bookmark or in a rush put it upside down open.
I just read The Foxhole Court this week and i have to wait 2 weeks for the second one...i also read Call Down the Hawk and the second one doesn’t come out for way too long
I'm going through onee of the worst break ups everrr and your videos GIVE ME LIFE!!! HAHAHA, YOU MAKE ME LAUGH SO MUCH JESSE. Also, you're named after my one of my favorite book characters: the mediator series by meg cabot. Have you read ittt? ;_;

"You're intelligent!"

MOOD
I used to just write the page down if I felt I couldn't remember it and even though now I use bookmarks I also try to guess where I am (since normally the are too big for the books and they fall out the book) and for the same reason I still memorize it a lot hahaha I remember number very easily
I wonder if this quiz has a lot other options to get other thn belle. Because i did the quiz before you so i wouldn't be "mislead" by your choices. Mine were like completly different apart from 2 and i also got Belle xD
Great video tho, keep it up! :D
Jesse, I see The Midnight Lie on your shelf and I just finished it and would love to know your thoughts ♥️
Lol I’ve been thinking of a definition for reading books.
the visual or audio consumption of either 1) a fictional narrative that consists of characters and a plot or 2) a non-fiction, organized narrative that aims to inform its audience on a real-life subject.
Needs some work though because it does put things like theater plays and scripts in an awkward spot.
what about braille books?
Your wall decor looks so cute! 💛 What did you use/buy?
Just because any of us like or don't like a book, doesn't mean it's not objectively good, bad, or impactful.
i was not expecting jesse to say "stan red velvet" but you know my kpopXbook heart is very happy
Wow you talking about doing everything but reading spoke to my soul
Hey jessethereader. Your content is so amazing! I was just wondering if you had any advice on starting a RUclips channel relating to books as well?
i literally have an entire shelf of books I should be reading but what am I doing? Binge watching jesse
I just keep picturing all of my favorite book-tubers going on book splurges all day and I’m jealous haha🤣
as a blind reader, to suggest i don’t actually read books because i can’t use my eyes to read is incredibly ablest. listening to the audiobook counts as reading the book! so thank you, jesse for pointing that out :)
Did the 7 question bookworm one and I got Hermione Granger! So freaking happy with that one!
i love that background
