- We are back with another listening challenge. Can you tell the difference between the past and an order in Spanish? We did a part one a while ago and Cody, as well as several other people, had problems. If you want to watch that video you can do so here.
• How Good Are your List...
This video is going to be very similar to the first one we did. But before we get into it lets review a few things first. Liked we talked about in the last video in order to tell the difference it is all about listening for where the emphasis is on the word. It is really easy to see when written because of the accent mark or tilde. Check out this example.
Llamé a la secretaria. - I called the secretary
Llame a la secretaria. - Call the secretary
Everything is the same except for that little accent mark or tilde over the "e" in the first sentence. Did you notice how much the sentence changed with the use of the accent mark/tilde? It changed an "order" or "instruction" to a sentence in "past". This is really easy to see when you have the word written down in front of you but can be a lot harder when you are just listening to someone speak.
So just like in the first video, we are going to do just that. The first part of the Spanish practice Maria is going to say a word and you have to figure out what syllable in the word is getting the emphasis. For the second part of the practice, Maria is going to say a sentence in Spanish and you will have to figure out if the sentence is an instruction or in past. You will do this by listening for the emphasis like in the first activity. The emphasis that Maria puts on words in the sentence with accents will let you know if the sentence is in past or if the sentence is an instruction.
Now if you have trouble when you are speaking Spanish giving the emphasis on words in past, we have a tip for you. Every time you see a tilde picture someone pinching you right as you are about to say it. This will give you the emphasis that the tilde will need for people to understand. Just make sure you do not go crazy with it and look as if you are an angry Spanish student. Maria says that it is important to overexaggerate the sound and then over time as you speak, slowly dial it back so that it sounds more natural.
Did you do better than Cody in this video? Did you do better than you did in part one? I hope you did! It can be a hard topic to get your head around but if you keep practicing it will make sense. Let us know how you did in the comments. Also, remember if you liked this video make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe.

You guys make me smile…you are both trying so hard here…student and teacher. Thank you for helping us all learn, and for putting yourself out there as you learn Cody!
I feel you Cody. I can get some and others I miss. More of these listening exercises, please.
Vosotros tipos son fenomenales! Yo tengo fluidez ahora con mis oidos. Tus videos me ayudaron más que todos otros. Ambos son estrellas del mundo del aprendezaje español y con mucha diversíon tambíen. Gracias de Nueva Zelanda.
Hello from Costa Rica! My wife and I have been living here for three years and I'm only now making it a priority to learn Spanish. Your videos are great, and it's nice to know that I'm not the only one that struggles with learning a second language. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
It’s not an easy thing to do for many people out there. Not everyone learns a language in three months 😉. Good for you for taking the initiative to learn the language!
Fui mejor que el otro video. Es muy difícil escuchar la diferencia, pero creo que es una habilidad muy importante para estudiantes de español. Tambien creo que escuchar para el accento me ayuda a entender español. Gracias maría y Cody!
qué bueno. De nada y gracias a ti por verlo :)
gracias para el video. me fui bien en el video, creo que puedo escuchar las diferencias.
que tenga un buen día.
Guys this is an extremely helpful video ! Thanks so much ! I can hear the difference now after all that.More like this please.
¡Que bueno! Así será.
WhyNotSpanish gracias !
¡Muchas gracias, es un ejercicio muy útil!
me fue bastante bien y es cierto que Cody ha mejorado mucho.
Este es un buen ejercicio y video.
That listening skill was very difficult for me when I was an intermediate Spanish learner. It is much easier now days than it used to be. I did well and n this exercise. However I was grateful for the practice.
Gracias por su ayuda.
Muchas gracias a ustedes.Me han ayudado mucho para aprender Español más facíl.No sé como les puedo agradecer.Muchas muchas Gracias☺
Cody, you are all of us.
¡Este fue un gran ejercicio! Cuanto más exageras la sílaba, más fácil me resulta el ejercicio. Cuando lo hiciste sonar más natural, tuve dificultades para descifrarlo. ¡Muchas gracias!
Yay, I got them all right! Not saying it was easy though. I had to listen to some of them more than once because I wasn't even sure which word I was meant to listen out for, lol. And I'm pretty sure that it would be even harder if I heard these sentences in real life, and didn't know that I had to look out for the 'past or instruction' specifically. Loved this video.
I feel you Cody con tus luchas! jaja.
Another helpful video. Love your approach.
La ultima video era mucho mas divertido. Me encanto mucho de ustedes..... e tambien os videos
Mejor pero difícil. Estoy con Cody!
falle solo uno! Great activity, did much better than the last very frustrating one lol Gracias a Maria y Cody. And those camisetas are absolutely fantasticos!
Since I am a native Portuguese speaker, it's much easier to distinguish between past and order in the sentences posed by Maria. Portuguese and Spanish are much close in several ways and skills.
Pensé que sería fácil, pero no lo es. Gracias por el video! Me ayudó.
Cody is hilarious! Keep it up Cody!
Thank you María and Cody. I feel comfortable with this topic.
Este video es muy útil. Lo disfruté. Muchas gracias!
Muchisimas gracias esto ayudó mucho. No muchos españoles en sudáfrica
Me gustan especialmente los videos sobre gramática. Podrías hacer uno sobre el tiempo futuro por favor?
Lo pensaré.
Genial, !me siento tu pena Cody! Muy útil.
Quiero ver un vídeo de música con ustedes! Singing and maybe even dancing también.
jajaj ¡no me imagino cómo sería eso!
I just try to focus on the stress at the end of the verb. If there is a stress Pasado otherwise Imperativo. Thank you guys for the exercise.
I love your videos. I was on a roll, then got derailed.
Excellent video ! This topic is quite hard, but this video made it clear to me
Yo he ido muy bien de esta vez 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Gracias para este video... more videos plus (grammar) :)
¡De nada! Pensaré acerca de los videos de gramática.
De acuerdo con Cody. A veces Maria no pronunciar con énfasis. Fue difícil para me.
Definitivamente fué un buen ejercício. I could easily make the difference between Instructions and past. Penso que me ajudou bastante a entender o espanhol falado. Yo soy um aficcionado for nteflix movies. Eu costumo to see them bajo subtítulos. Gracias. Thank you. Obrigado. Tchau.
Excelente vídeo! Necesito más como este!
I love this exercise! Keep them coming!
ok Cody....if you ever say "Leeeeeesto" I am going to fall out of my chair, haha!
Este video fue muy utíl, muchisimas gracias.
Puedo escucha la diferencia ahora, muchas gracias! 😄
Los ejercicios de escucha son muy útiles. Mi mayor preocupación es no poder entender a los hablantes nativos.
The rule is understood but there a couple near the end, inc lave, that only sound the difference when the mistake is emphasised.
thank you so much for this very helpful video! I managed to get everything right!
this one seemed more advanced than the level i'm at but was interesting and fun to watch.
This was VERY helpful. Thumbs up!
Hola a los dos, la verdad cuando has dicho (explique' a los estudiantes ) pensé lo mismo que a cody ..... Escuchar a tu voz y me cuenta que tal ¿ por favor. Ps me encanta tus vídeos!
thanks these are perfect exercises for me.
Ouf! Pas facile de toujours faire la différence. Merci pour cette vidéo fort utile...😊
Gracias por este buen video. Lo hice mejor en este video que en el primer video sobre este tema.
Creo que este video me ayudo. Muchas gracias!
Muchas gracias por el video!
Muy muy bien y útil!! Gracias!
It’s all about hearing where the emphasis is on the verb. Not so easy as reading it 😊
Otro vídeo! Yay yay yay!
Este video estuvo muy util! Hice no malo, mas o menos... ;-)
When you are saying the whole sentence the emphasis doesn't sound the same as when you are saying the individual words. Therefore it's not as easy to tell if the words are in past or an order
Gracias. Fue difícil pero creo es mas fácil en contexto.
The facial expressions of María remind me of my wife which speaks Spanish, when I make mistakes while she is teaching me that language.
It's strong to say twice like that that he was "pésimo!" Poor Cody, lol. 😂
Fantastic. Gracias!
You are great
Este actividad no fue dificil para mi ! Although it takes a lot of focus, I’m definitely getting better.
¡Hola! Buen vídeo, como siempre. Pero, una nota, la marca sobre a, e, i no es un tilde, es un marca de acento. El tilde es sobre la “ñ”
la tilde es el signo que se pone sobre la letra para modificarla.
Las tildes del español son:
1) el "acento agudo" sobre las vocales: á é í ó ú para indicar el énfasis de la sílaba.
2) la "virgulilla" sobre la n para nasalizarla y convertirla en ñ;
I am confused . Cuando llegue.. is the subjunctive.. not the imperative (order) Yet the forms are the same.
I only got 1 more right than Cody, haha. The struggle is real!!
No veo este vídeo la primera vez. Pero por hoy tengo dos vídeos de Why Not Spanish :)
Oh if we all had a partner who speaks Spanish and English. We all would progress.
Yo te ayudo !!!
Unless you can understand the context it is almost impossible to tell from the verb pronunciation alone
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
He disfrutado, algunos he respondido corectamente pero algunas no :-)
I need to practice more because I got most wrong
I didn't do too bad, but I definitely have my work cut out. I missed lavé, estudie pase and regalé
Cody ain't getting nothing until he gets the answer correct 😂
Maria, tienes la paciencia de una santa(saint?)
His consenting face while she’s speaking in spanish😂
I'm sorry, but she's saying the imperative and past to pretty much have the same emphasis. But when she then reads them to show where the emphasis is she does it clearly. She's purposely trying to confuse us.
Is there a lesson on how to roll or trill R?
No. No tenemos esa lección.
Try pronouncing your "R" like a "D" at first. It should help to get your tongue in the correct position to trill. Then begin to try to speed up that "D" as you become more comfortable.
mgtow hmflmfao "men" who go their own way and never gets laid yo solo digo la verdad
La Idea That's not what MGTOW means...
Yes, ok. But MGTOW means that you cant be a father. And that is, in my honest opinion, a very sad outlook for life...
Maria quería ofrecer hacer unos vídeos contigo. Soy estudiante de español y sería chistoso. Lo hice mejor que Cody en esto. Lol.
Cody y yo creemos que inglés es más fácil. ¿Estoy correcto Cody?
OH MY GOODNESS, I couldn't get it either...
"Cómo les fue". Does that translate into how did you (plural) do?
I would say "Cómo les fue" it means "how did it go?". "How did you do?" I can say means "Cómo lo hicieron?"
Estoy temprano por fin 😂
¡Qué bueno que llegaste temprano!
Poor Cody. It's easy for me as a brazilian haha
Glen Ington Olá
jaja bueno, no le fue tan mal como la última vez. :)
It wasnt difficult
Faillllled
Qué féo y desagradable Cody !
