Jay Clark jerry is to guitarist what Corey Taylor is to singers everyone wants him. His perfect tone is what a lot of guitarist want. Honestly he's very underrated.
AiC fan here for over 20 years - but until today I've never seen a "how-to" video by Jerry. Mind blown - especially since I've been listening to this song on loop for the past couple days. I don't play guitar but this video is motivating me to stop by guitar center tonight!
It would be a really good song to learn on, power chords, bends and two notes. It just goes to show how you dont have to be uber technical as a guitarist to make good music.
Learning from THE Master is the real deal! Mr Cantrell, allow me to express my gratitude and thank you for teaching uns how to play the wonderful Alice in Chains Songs the way they are meant to be played! Thank you again and greetings from Germany.
Jerry said that they had to drop tune Mike's bass down to C#, but If you have a 5-string bass like myself, playing that intro riff with the half bends is fairly easy. I do it on the low B string on the 5th and 6th fret. And what's awesome about playing it that way is you don't have to go through the hassle of drop tuning a 4-string and it makes it sound larger than life. Also this video lesson was very helpful because the tabs that are out there are not quite right.
Definitely my favorite guitarist of all time! I got to see them in Dallas in 2018. I walked right beside him in the doorway at the Omni with no one around and got to say hi to him. Just like in interviews, super kool dude!
Cantrell's Law: Not everyone who guest plays with Alice in Chains (or covers them) can or will sound good. But Jerry Cantrell will make everyone he plays with (or covers) sound so over the freakin top awesome!
I totally agree w/ Warrior15.....def. underrated! One of my fave guitarists!!! Once I heard "Check My Brain", had to get that cd!!!!! Thanks Jerry! Come back to the Tabernacle in ATL, since I had 2 miss it last time. AIC---- always
I swear Jerry is so f##### dedicated to honing his craft. Back in classic Alice days everyone was so focused on layne insane vocals that we didntveven know Jerry co piloted this monster. He sings almost all of would and heaven beside u. Until I saw live performances I never knew it. As a guitarist he continues to take on new challenges with exceptional results in New styles. Even the new single sounds so classic aic there's no mistaking Jerry is a critical element to the sound of classic aic. Congrats Jerry you're finally getting the recognition you deserve keep shinning on!
Jerry you friggin rock, I love it that you kept A in C going in spite of Lane's tragic demise. Yngwie may play more notes but you play better to the song, I hear his arrogant ass rag on you and I laugh
I used to go to my first and only guitar teacher back in 1992 and always praise Jerry, and he used to rag on him saying his shit was weak..hence I fired his ass because of it..lol..he was an arrogant ass as well...thought the more mindless notes, the better..its harder to write simpler shit and make it work this well..
Just goes to show that 1 person doesn't make a band, when you take a great simple riff and add the group, the song just grows. Also, don't think that just because it's simple it's easy.
Jerry is not underrated, AiC are not as famous as Pearl Jam or Nirvana. But in proportion he is pretty well known considering the fact that AiC were never mainstream.
Only Alice in Chains could make such a simple riff instantly badass.
Pantera…..
Jerry isn't just a legendary muscian. He's a very underrated guitar player
Jay Clark jerry is to guitarist what Corey Taylor is to singers everyone wants him. His perfect tone is what a lot of guitarist want. Honestly he's very underrated.
@@jessedeleon4123 you could have said dime and phil and it still would have made sense.
Jerrys the fuckin man
No shit . . Dudes one of the greats . Better then those other you tubers taking 20 min videos . The master does it in 4 lol
Who said that he is underrated
That tone kicks ass
because wood affects the sound
Andrew Zeleno theres more to jerrys tone than the fucking wood dumbass
You can get that tone, pretty close, from using a Rat pedal.
His tone is so bad ass. I have always liked his style and sound. All around good musician and song writer.
One of my favorite guitarists. Writes such catchy yet dark stuff.
I love his tone. So meaty!
AiC fan here for over 20 years - but until today I've never seen a "how-to" video by Jerry. Mind blown - especially since I've been listening to this song on loop for the past couple days. I don't play guitar but this video is motivating me to stop by guitar center tonight!
Do it
+Dana051 Never to late to learn.
Did you buy a guitar since thaan?
It would be a really good song to learn on, power chords, bends and two notes.
It just goes to show how you dont have to be uber technical as a guitarist to make good music.
jerry is a underrated player he has amazing talent and has created some of the greatest riffs to ever exsist in rock he needs more respect
Jerry MIGHT have been under rated 10 years ago but not anymore. He's really pulled it off. Congrats Jerry. Well earned.
String.
This man can play the guitar and give me chills. He is an amazing guitar player. A true Rocker!
i still believe Jerry is the last great guitar player to have emerged since the 90s.
Jerry is a riff god
That one simple bend makes it sound so badass man! Sick riffs mah dude!
Learning from THE Master is the real deal! Mr Cantrell, allow me to express my gratitude and thank you for teaching uns how to play the wonderful Alice in Chains Songs the way they are meant to be played!
Thank you again and greetings from Germany.
Love this song. Wish I could have heard Layne sing it but it's awesome as is.
How he makes such simple riffs sound so flipping awesome, I started playing guitar 16 years ago because of him, true guitar player!!!!
Jerry said that they had to drop tune Mike's bass down to C#, but If you have a 5-string bass like myself, playing that intro riff with the half bends is fairly easy. what a badass riff man
Definitely my favorite guitarist of all time! I got to see them in Dallas in 2018. I walked right beside him in the doorway at the Omni with no one around and got to say hi to him. Just like in interviews, super kool dude!
It's unreal that Jerry would take the time to show viewers how to play his music. I saw their show in Vancouver it kicked ass.
I'm still a novice guitar player but I recently mastered that verse riff, and it's very satisfying. Got some great fingertip callouses from it, too.
that tone is fucking great
top shelf song writer, singer, and riff master.
It would be nice if there were more great videos out there like this. I'd love to watch this kind of thing with all my favorite bands.
Cantrell's Law: Not everyone who guest plays with Alice in Chains (or covers them) can or will sound good. But Jerry Cantrell will make everyone he plays with (or covers) sound so over the freakin top awesome!
Jerry DONT need Nothing but his Guitar!! He so talented and good voice!!
I always really liked Jerry. He is a very gifted artist
I thought he'll just do the guitar part then explain it, but suddenly he sings on top of that fuckin' riff man....what a legend....KING Jerry!
One of the best songs of AIC
Only Jerry could make something so easy sound do fucking cool! Damn I love that man!
This would be the perfect song for someone getting chased by a chainsaw or something in a movie lol, idk why.
That intro riff is right up there with a Black Sabbath riff
Just a testimant to simple and badass.. less is more in a lot of cases. A lot of their riffs are like that, simple but effective.
Well, now Check my brain is in my list of guitar songs I like to play. lol
heart beats faster, jerry, my beloved, love his riffs
really need my brain checked because I had know idea this song was this easy , been playing it all day with brother and got me wrong
I totally agree w/ Warrior15.....def. underrated! One of my fave guitarists!!!
Once I heard "Check My Brain", had to get that cd!!!!! Thanks Jerry! Come back to the Tabernacle in ATL, since I had 2 miss it last time. AIC---- always
jerry is the most creative guitarrist of 90's and grunge music...maybe the greatest guitarrist of all time
Jerry is fuckn killer to make something so rudimentery sound so full of life and just kicks your ass thats the stroke of a master
I swear Jerry is so f##### dedicated to honing his craft. Back in classic Alice days everyone was so focused on layne insane vocals that we didntveven know Jerry co piloted this monster. I lived in California for 5 years love this song Jerry is so fucking cool
Jerry you friggin rock, I love it that you kept A in C going in spite of Lane's tragic demise. Yngwie may play more notes but you play better to the song, I hear his arrogant ass rag on you and I laugh

Just goes to show that 1 person doesn't make a band, when you take a great simple riff and add the group, the song just grows. Also, don't think that just because it's simple it's easy.
