His tone....damn that is a sweet tone
That's the first thought that ran through my head. Really good tone.
How the hell can someone make simple riffs sound so awesome wtf
pedals
1) Dynamics 2) finesse (light touch) and 3) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
Mr Brownstone wat's dat buddy?
I don't condone this but actually its from heroin. He and layne made all their best stuff using heroin. Jerry quit, layne didn't.. That is why, in my opinion, chains died with layne.. The new stuff isn't the same..
Ultim4te guitarist blues mindset
Very accurate he should audition for AIC
agreed
yeah i agree he would make a great guitarist for aic
Terry Cantrell y a beast
Jerry Cantrell would be a great Jerry Cantrell
Hes been the guitar player sents the mid 80s what u talking about
Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssussssssss Chriiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssssstttt
Jordan Liddle deny your maker
Tony M He yayaaya who triiiiies
@@38clonewars will be wasted
@@kiashangovender5221 Oohh feeeeeeeeeeeeeed myyy eeeeeeeeyes
Noooow you've sewn them _SHHHUUUT_
probably one of the best and most full tones and sounds I've heard. Holy hell I want his set up
I want his set too, that tone is like clean yet hard & compact, word to mother.
His Rampage model is under $400 dude. And its a great guitar! I love Leo Fender for starting G&L! If you're looking for an affordable axe, check it out!
@Scott Mckinstry, I'm thinking about it.
Glenn Vanish Don't think, just do. That Rampage has a really great tone and for the price, there's few that stack up.
@@scottmckinstry1698 I know this comment is half a decade old, but a guitar can only contribute so much to the tone, if you have any idea could you share what pedals or amp he uses?
The sound that he gets is just off the charts.
I've always been in awe of players like Cantrell who can sound dark and heavy; harmonically and melodically complex and above all, original, all in one song. His use of first position (open string) chords is also fantastic. Of course, the bass lines in these songs are absolutely essential, though I'm sure most of you reading this already knew that.
True!!!! Alice in Chains has had two of the best and quite underrated bassists in Rock. Mike Starr was raw and fucking awesome. Mike Inez is outstanding, and has a complex understanding of groove and melody
@@SpectorEuro4 They were/are the shit. Also I absolutely love how AIC had two bassists with the same first name that literally almost look exactly the same. It is GRUNGE AS FUCK. Truly some fucking metal shit right there.
Doesnt get better than this. A lesson from the man himself Jerry Cantrell.
"Would?" verse riff is simply one of the best in history!!!! So connected with the groove, that's Rock.
Best dirty guitar sound I ever heard!
It's so fucking filthy it's gorgeous
I can practically hear Layne bursting out the ending, Am i wrong, have i run to far to get home?
Kickass video, jerry's a very talented and original guitarist, R.I.P Layne.
Yup
I can watch just him play that guitar until my ears bleed.
Jerry Cantrell God of Grunge Metal
metal? hmmm metal sucks. but we hear here something amazing. nothing to do with metal
Andrew, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and some metal does suck but to say that the genre itself suck's is a bit overkill. I never said it was metal I said it was Grunge metal there is a difference. Alice in Chains were the only band that had that unique sound and their first album was pure grunge metal bro. Listen to Facelift.
Michael Goode I respect grunge. I didn't know that grunge bocame metal
Ellen Davis stay away while big boys are discussing here
Ellen Davis Man, chill out. You make me sure that you are a man 'cause a girl can't be so manish
Good god that tone is AMAZING!!!
Tell me about it.
Sounds like my Micro cube tuned half step down. And I mean it sounds good.
One of the best choruses ever.
Couldn't help but here Layne singing while I was watching this. I know Jerry says that the band is cool the way it is now but I know he thinks about what might be if somebody could have saved Layne. Kills me when I think about it.
Nobody was gonna save him, the songs he sang was his life and he keep falling deeper
I was number 5000 to like this
Also, I saw AIC in 93 at Lollapalooza, they were phenomenal
That distortion is beautiful , I can feel the power tubes saturating but it’s probably a Kemper lol.
I grew up to Alice in chains. Most under rated Guitarist of all time!
That fucking tone. God damn.
That tone is amazing.
One of my all-time favorite songs...
For years i haven't been able to make the stretch for that classic blues riff in G at 1:25 , I have never considered doing it the way Jerry Cantrell does it, works awesome!
I’ve been doing like that almost 25y.
I can't make the stretch either. I typically just play a G power chord, with a mix of palm mutes, and use of wah pedal to achieve a similar sound to the recording. Not the same, but it works.
Jerry Cantrell's tone is one of the best dirty guitar tones I've heard
this tone is insanely heavy
Mr.Cantrell are incredible..!! That sounds great..!
I love the main riff sound fucking awesome tone
This kind of music will never die
To me the most underrated guitar player and band. One of my fav bands and pickers.
LOVE his tone!!
Layne's voice was really rich and he had agreat range. Thank you Jerry for being kind enough to demo. the guitar pieces like that. It's nice to see that you are down to earth.
Holy fuck, that tone!
I could sit here and watch this all day. Just thinking of Layne singing along is like heaven. Jerry is so awesome!!!
Well the style and the passion whit which he is playing is amazing and its really get inspire to do so.he is dam passinate
Gritty dirty tone jerry is a master.
One of my favorite guitarist and bands. Cannot get enough of those dark haunting melodies. Pure brilliance!
That is the best god damn tone I’ve ever heard. I want to know that amp he’s using.
100 watt freedman
The tone is unbelievable.
damn... why it is so perfect.. unbeliveable.. really stunning :O !!
I can almost hear Layne singing the chorus, fucking beautiful
gotta love the bogner tone!
Wow the smooth transition of changing guitars when he talks about man in the box and then starts playing it is incredible.
Te Amo tanto Jerry!!!Es Hermoso escucharte❤
Shit, that tone is so juicy.
He is the man the best fuckin guitarist I'm 64! Years old and it didn't get any better than Jerry cantrell so if you want to some. Of best dam music pay fuckin listen and learn what good music is all about because he is the man and there is no better
Fantastic tone !!
How many sang Staley's lyrics while he was playing....simply amazin!
He has been doing this for 25+ years...
This guy has potential.
Pure genius, even when it's the simplest song
The Church of Cantrell...just saying id attend...
who else is obsessed with that phenomenal d9#7 chord?
Pablo Nieto The chorus to "Thunderkiss '65" has the same chord, just at E instead of D.
Love the old school KISW stickers!!
This is more grunge than I thought
no matter how simple someone may think that song is made - it is a killer one !
One of my all time favs
That tone.
I can honestly say he makes a Chorus pedal almost seem cool again. Great tone....I may bust out my Zakk Chorus and try it out....
Chorus is cool as shit man
Absolutely fantastic!!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
amazing sound.....wicked
sounds great
I'm a teenager
but, yes your comment is true for so many idiots
I've been playing guitar for about 2 years now and your comment sums up what I've learned.
if a rift sound great, heavy (or whatever sound your looking for) it doesn't matter how simple it is.
Thanks Jerry for teaching it to me, and giving me the 437 tunmimg. Can can here Layne singing as you Play crazy ha
Beautiful
i would have never guessed that this song is actually that easy to play damn. thank god for these lessons!
LOVE YOU CANTRELL
less is more my friends.....
Yeah, its called by a bogner and a G&L Rampage and you got his tone.
hell man your right i agree entirely thats why i play not for whose better but because i can and thats all that matters to me
All these decades I’ve been playing it in dropped d tuning lol
Awesome Jerry
Jerry Cantrell Hello I'm fine have a good one! 🤘🏻
Amazing how something so un-complex can be so FUCKING bad ass and have so much emotion.
I like the cow 🐄😮
That guy can play like Alice In Chains guitar player. Almost identical.
What a riff
Thank you Jerry!!!!!
"super simple" shit im doing something wrong
Jerry Cantrell is best musician alive.
Same chords for the chorus for pearl jam - alive. Both bands from Seattle. Aic wrote man in the box first I believe.
good catch, AIC's "Your Decision" and Nirvana's "Polly" are exactly the same chord progression as well
The riff to Alive was actually written in 1990 when Gossard was still a member of Mother Love Bone.
The Cantrell Project
Nutshell to.
It is the same chords but the alive is in the key of A major which makes the chord progression sound totally different. Pretty cool how that works when you think about it
Em-G-D-A is a common chord progression. It's only one note off from The Four Chords of Awesome, with the A in the A minor replacing the G in the C Major.
If he is... it is probably a Ibanez TS808HW Tube Screamer being it is the standard one he uses.
One of those players who don't over use their talent basically.
SICK !
@D3m0nhunter719 Agreed. Cantrell has one of the best guitar tones I've ever heard.
Legend
Line 6 amps are cloudy sounding, there is no way you can dial in the punch that most of us look for. Like the other guy said get yourself a Marshall and preferably a good overdrive pedal to get the extra distortion. I personally have a Marshall but switched over to a more expensive Peavey tube amp with Digitech Metal Master distortion pedal (absolute gold - can dial in any harder rock/metal band's tone)
Anyone else’s brain just overflow with dopamine’s when He’s playing the high strings and chorus?
“So it’s”- *changes guitar in a second *
KISW Seattle Rocks...
Anyone know?? Was this video an exert from a DVD produced by the band? Anyone know where it originated from, and if there is a physical copy that can be found? Thanks.
I like how even the writer of these riffs makes mistakes sometimes
Closer to alternative metal than alt rock/grunge
Not in this video but in the recording of this song he used one and sometimes during live gigs
Great! Thank you!
Maestro🤘
Cantrell el grande
@69Thrasha69 i listen to prog... and pure technique doesn't separate one guitarist from another... it is about many things... not just structure, texture and complexity... it is also about spirit, soul and passing those things to audience.
*F-BOMB!!* 😲
Who ever dislikes this should think about the man in the box! Would? You dislike this masterpiece? Then you need to drown in a sea of sorrow! You should be buried but I would piss on them bones...but for now they will just be down in the hole! It just makes me sickman! Someone didn't know who Layne was...I can't remember! Which one said it but it made me sit on my angry chair! Fucking roosters!!! We can't let all this love, hate, love consume otherwise we die young!
RIP Layne Staley
RIP Mike Starr
Rock on Jerry!
That lead reminds me of Jimi Hendrix.
No body can play it better
what effects are you using ? i never seem to get that exact tone that you have and i want to get it badly cause it's kick ass lol
