    Joe
    Been into radio and amps install for over 30 yrs note 3" inches out from hot wire at battery fuses first.
    This will stop you from burning up your truck .
    The way you show if you was hit by some one or you got hit , your wire from the battery hot post would short out and burn down your vehicle.
    Learning is something we do each day and today you will learn.
    Good luck and good job .

    Dude your antenna is the heart and soul of your mobile rig. If you got a crappy little antenna it don't matter what kind of power you put in there you're not going to get out you're not going to receive as well. There's all kinds of antennas but the single best antenna you can get for a mobile setup is 102-in steel whip with a 6-in spring. Do yourself a favor put one on there and you'd be amazed at the difference

      That is what I run: Cobra 148 GTL ( old school/side mic), 102" whip w/6" spring on a Hustler ball mount, w6 feet RG-8X coax ( double shield), barefoot (4 watts AM/12 watts SSB) and I have talked all over from southeastern Massachusetts.

      I have an old school Malaysian built 148 that I had in my Jeep for years on a 102 inch steel whip mounted on my rear bumper. Getting ready to change the coax over to rg400. I've got a striker 955 now but I'll never sell my 148

    So being an electrical engineer just wanted to add some things because noticed that the comments of some seem confused on certain important things. Ideally the best swr match would be 0:0. Though in the real world we have electronic loss even copper isn't a perfect conductor. Which is why if an ohm meter is taken to a single piece of wire it should show very marginal resistance.. so in the real world the best antenna match you can achieve is a 1:1 match on channel one and forty. If you want the best possible results as far as performance you should mount a puck mount on the roof to begin with. Everyone is correct when they say not to ground to the firewall but to the ground post on the battery. Gunny pucks are nice and sleek looking and perform excellent. I personally run a Breedlove(not sure if i spelled it right) puck mount with a swivel that is tensioned to your likeness incase you hit something it will fall back instead of break and also has a quick release assembly to easily take on and off if needed. Also, if you truly want the best SWR you need a meter capable of telling you what you need to do to properly tune the antenna or ground the antenna(if impedance is off). I personally recommend a MFJ 259c for any SWR calibration. A rig expert is even better than the MFJ but will cost you between $800 and $1000 to buy. A MFJ 259c is around $300 including shipping but you will have to learn to use it on your own. It sounds like whatever cb shop you have been to doesn't know much of what they are talking about to be quite honest. If you want to take in information then be sure it is correct info, otherwise you are hurting ppls system if they take most any of the advice given in the video. Breaka breaka

      So,You tell Me what is wrong with grounding at one of the seats bolts where the amp. is located? Nothing is the answer. The Hot coming into feed all needs to be fused to the battery as close as possible. After that,route cleanly and out of the way of all moving parts.
      To the AMP. it goes, I then fuse again going to the radio.Make sure all is neat and clean. I use heat shrink and in a pick-up truck. Remove antennas connector and have someone spot You. Use an exacto knife and make an "X" in Your carpet at the very rear of your cab ,drill hole only big enough to fit coax. Run it through,just enough to mount antenna on the roof. Reinstall the connector and,BINGO,,!!!!!! Key_UP!!!! Also,seal the hole that You drilled with a body shop quality rust inhibitor and general sealant, It works!!!! Troy.

      A Nano VNA SAA-2 is better than the MFJ and only costs around $60.00! Of course there is a learning curve in the use of the Nano VNA also but there are several really great vids on RUclips that will teach you how to use a Nano Vector Network Analyzer (Nano VNA). And, it fits in you shirt pocket and can be connected to you computer.

    I can punch 10+ miles WITHOUT an amp, because I use a big antenna. The increased reception and efficiency of the power out means you can do a lot of things with a legal CB rig if you use a big, obnoxious antenna. Even if you have more total ERP than I do, I can still receive better. Antenna is always an important thing, and a more powerful amp can't solve every single problem.

    I agree.Usually at even 150-200 watts some Driver out there will come back and say,"Damn,You need NOT check at all!!" The fusing,that gets done in the engine bay as far as I have been taught and utilized running over 1K of power,Real,power. I never had any trouble. All grounding is kept SHORT,extremely short,like three feet,period!. Like a seats bolt and I always use 2 A.W.G. wire..Don't waste Your time or money with less. That way You can upgrade with very few hassles. Buy a Wilson 5000 ,from the start. Size matters in this.Yes,fuse,fuse fuse and again,keep ground at THREE FEET. Not yelling. Have a lot of fun,that is what matters! Troy.

    every 10w you need 1 amp ,so 250w you need 25 amp I would use a 20 or 25amp fuse no higher a 30amp won't pop 1st the amp will. I think that was a 250 Super Star if it is your lucky to see 100w n they get hot having it on the carpet takes way longer to cool down ,space it off the carpet so air can pass, last thing if you use single mount antenna the driver side is better because of the road, it reflects better then a ditch, hope i help ya 808 siad that .nice set up by the way

    • @edcrabb
      @edcrabb 8 лет назад +1

      +hoskinmage Uh wrong. Just because you connect multiple devices to a positive cable does not "Split" the voltage, there are ways to drop voltage over a load such as a resister, but connecting two or more devices does not split the voltage. What does happen is there is less current, not to be confused with voltage (Look up Ohms Law)if you wire the devices in parallel you get equal current distribution, if you wire them in series as shown here you will draw more current, hence the 10 gauge multi-strand wire he has. Which isn't needed if it were wired correctly.

    I noticed your power wire isn't fused at the hook up point under the hood, if that wire somehow grounds out then your truck will be catching on fire. Always need a fuse at the battery. I'm sure your set up works fine, just a bit sloppy for my taste, no disrespect intended. I can't stand wires, so I run all my wires where they are unseen or loom and follow the factory harness if possible. You are correct about tapping into the fuse box or any existing accessory, Go directly off of the battery for any high amperage draw.

  • @DJMADMIKEGAMING
    @DJMADMIKEGAMING 10 лет назад +10

    for one....never listen so someone that says to do what they do when it comes to wiring anything to a car/truck/rig/rv. This fella for some reason has decided to run his power wire through his door jam and not drill a hole into the firewall of the truck and install a grommet into it and then run the wire through. Second the main power wire is not fused at all other than where it comes out of the distro block he has installed. now there is nothing against the distro blocks, but all power wires need to be fused at the main power supply and then again on the output side of the line. Most stock CB radios (cobra 25/29/29lx) will work fine when installed into the fuse block of the vehicle. Just always make sure you are on the output side of the fuse (meaning the dead side when the key is in the off position). Also always have the correct fuse in the holder for your protection. Joe Smith, i'm sorry if this sounds like i'm bitching about all this but this kind of thing just gets under my skin. i have been installing cb radios and car audio for the last 20 years and when i see this kind of work it just make my blood boil. Oh and by the way, i'm running a Galaxy DX-98VHP built and tuned by Bell CB. it is fused just as it is needed, i have a 50 amp at the batteries on my 2003 Mack Vision and then again after the connection inside the truck just before the radio. when it comes to car audio, we are talking a whole lot more power that most people are used to dealing with. normally running 15.8-16.2 volts and consuming around 1000 amps just to supply the amplifiers in the car. I have helped build systems for SUVs that are running almost 20 volts and several thousand amps of current draw from massive alternators. anyways, have good one and please fuse that power feed line before you burn your truck up.

    • @johnkirby6700
      @johnkirby6700 7 лет назад +2

      Both sides of a fuse are dead when the power is off moron. Nobody makes alternators for vehicles that put out "several thousand amps".

    • @jamesotey1721
      @jamesotey1721 5 лет назад +1

      @@johnkirby6700 Well, you're correct about the general limitations of high output alternators.
      But you're incorrect about the battery side of the fuse shown in this video.
      If the metal frame of the vehicle cuts through the battery cable near the door hinge, the current will flow from the positive battery terminal through the red power cable and Arc directly into the negatively grounded metal chassis of the car frame and back to the negative terminal on the battery.
      The red battery cable will heat up and possibly cause severe damage, particularly to the alternator if the vehicle is running at the time.
      We have seen this happen multiple times in the shop when correcting mobile audio systems installed buy do-it-yourselfers at home.

      But whatever. 😂

    • @joe-aj0yz
      @joe-aj0yz 5 лет назад

      @@jamesotey1721 Ehh...not really. The river is comprised of water, so both the river (and water) flow in a direction. The current OF the river is the direction in which it flows at a given time; a difference of potential, if you will.
      If a lake or pond is completely enclosed, and has no external forces acting upon it, then the water is smooth because it has nowhere to go. But, the moment that the earth around the water is moved, then the water begins to move, too. The direction in which the water moves from point A to point B is its current. The same goes for electrons in electricity, whether AC or DC. Electrons will remain stationary along a wire or in the positive side of a battery until an external force is applied. That external force - whether more positive or more negative than the electrons already present - will cause the electrons to move in a particular direction (that being from a more positive state to a more negative state; always trying to find neutrality). The measurement of movement and direction in which those electrons flow is their current.
      Hope this helps in understanding a bit more.

      You want to go through the firewall on the drivers side you might even find a rubber grommet already there. Why does that radio sound noisy do you have the squelch wide open, or is it the amp doing that?, just wondering cause I set up my Stryker 447 HPC (converted to the regular AM 40 bands), using LMR Ultra Flex cable and soldered my own silver connectors 9 feet in length with cable to spare in a 2012 Peterbilt . I also used Hank Breedlove's ball mount, and his own machined PL259 stud connectors. From the top of Cabbage hill, OR I could talk clearly out to 21 miles, but lost contact with the other driver as he went a little past Pendleton. I went direct to the battery for my power and for additional noise suppression. No amp just a peak and tune with a Schottky diode for the receive installed. I got lots of compliments over the radio how it sounded. I think too that the quality and reputation of the antenna makes a difference as well. I was using a Predator 30K antenna and this set up worked very, very well, but it didn't make noise like yours,... is that inherent with amps? What's your carrier input to the amp set at? I do know overdriving an amp can make them sound pretty scratchy. Thanks for the vid btw

    Id put some self amalgamating tape on that pl259 antenna mount keep it dry.
    Cable for supply spot on,nice heavy grade to stop volts drop and a proper fuse block.
    Cables def should go straight to batteries as you said.
    The only thing I would add to this install,
    a High quality Low pass filter on amplifier output to reduce nasty harmonics and TVI as most cb amps dont have one internally and helps keep transmission RF clean.
    Roll off at 30mhz.
    A short braiding bonding strap to earth case of linear amp to vehicle chassis can help on high power linear amps.
    Good vid!

    I have a hot rodded ( by an old Navy radio technician) Galaxy 33hml radio , driving a Texas Star 667v amplifier, through a Wilson 1000 antenna. It blows smoke. The radio barefooted on low, keys 1 watt and swings over 20. With the amp on I have it set at 20 watts swinging 600 watts. I can raise it up to 100 swinging 650 but I like it bleeding all over with the dead key on the low side. I get yelled at all the time, so I know it's gettin out. Lol! With a lil echo it's quite aggravating I'm sure.I can talk to whoever I want to.

    I would say you have a great set up but, I would say your fuses should be set to match the power in put of your radio and cb setting to prevent damage caused from surge. Rather than putting a 30 or 50 amp fuse, I would suggest 13-15 amp. fuse. like I said just to protect from over.I would think the amp and radio run off 12 volt power right. That's probably what there set to handle .

      truckertrucker18 The fuse is matched to the max safe current draw of the radio as determined by the manufacturer. Bigger fuses mean nothing but damage. BTW, I have never seen a 13 amp fuse in 45 years of electronic design and service.

The Ground is the most important think on the Antenna, Especialy with a Linear. Keep a check on Rust or Corrosion. There are times when you can look at Corrosion and NOT see it. An OHM Meter will help.

      @@TheTbird668 At the battery end of the cable, on both the pos and neg.
      If the cable shorts out and the fuse is in the cab the the cable is still live and will result, most likely, in a fire.
      With the fuse at the battery the fuse will blow killing the power in the cable.

      Do not forget a power supply that has enough amperes to run your amplifier also. A small five ampere power supply will run your stock CB just fine. Even a 3 ampere will run it fine. An amplifier is a different situation. Those amplifiers may draw 15 to 30 amperes, depending on the size amplifier. The power supply may cost more than the amplifier.

      @Hell's favorite Salty Masshole Actually you do as DC current flows from Neg to Pos!

      While you can get away with just a fuse on the Pos side, a little extra insurance is always nice.

      Same size as in the Pos holder as long as it isn't larger that what the radio manufacturer recommends. And, running separate leads for the radio and amp to the battery is best, no shared leads!

      As a CBer since the 60's (and a general class ham operator) I know where it all started. Ham radio began in the late 1800's. The first publication of licensees was in 1909. 11 meter use for the Citizens Band began in 1958 after it was removed from the ham bands.

      Amateur Radio has been around for more than a hundred years. That's where it all started. Your VHF and UHF frequencies that were once thought worthless now are in high demand thanks to ham radio. Your Cellphone technology was invented by a ham. Repeaters and radio relay are technologies born from Ham Radio. Hell, Nikola Tesla was a Ham, they just didn't call it Amateur Radio back then.

    200 watts for 15 miles isn't that good, cb can propogate very far with a good antenna. My 2 meter rig does that on 35 watts, and my HF can easily make it 4000 miles on 100 watts, because the antenna is good.

      @Rich - 19 NOV 2018 - If used the right way, CB radios can be useful. I got traffic updates on a 300 mile trip into Georgia. My brother had enough forewarning of a traffic jam on the Interstate and, thus, he avoided rear-ending someone. Sadly, though, i often hear the same handful of folks badmouthing each other and/or talking nonsense. Other times they are too far away for me to reach or they just don't want to talk to me because i don't speak CB lingo.
      Amateur radio, on the other hand, has been a nonstop blast. I have about 10 repeaters programmed into my two-band radio. When i make the 110 mile trip to see my family, i pretty much talk to someone on every repeater during the 2.5 hour ride. On top of that, i've spoken to lots of friendly folks on a local repeater in Tampa.
      Having said all that, i still love CB radio and its potential. I plan on using CB as a cheap way to inlead friends and family to (emergency) radio communications by loaning them a full radio/antenna set so that i can have a network of comms-enabled neighbors.
