      Well if it's scientifically proved, what can you say? Intelligent people tend to overthink things, and maybe that and the fact that they find it header to believe in things like God or silly traditions and feasts that make you feel happier and safer are exactly the reasons for it.

    So HFD is just a cool name to separate us from "actually depressed" people? Maybe that's why my psychiatrist treated me like an insect. She minimized all my symptoms like lack of energy, weird sleep patterns, lack of apetite, lack of joy, the constant emptiness caused by the inability to feel most emotions, unstable mood, suicidal thoughts, self-harming, etc. She diagnosed me with this "dysthymia" stuff even though I've been suffering for over 10 years and never once felt happiness in my entire life. Because I got used to it, because I learned how to live with it, because I'm useful to society, my case is not urgent. Apparently being useful and active is more important than feeling happiness. More important than being a person. It's "just dysthymia", so who cares? My life is falling apart and everyday I think of ending it all, but who cares? As long as I'm a productive member of society, it's not actually depression, it's "just dysthymia".

      dysthymia is the clinical term for chronic depression. So that IS actual depression. Mood disorders come in many shapes and sizes. If she downplays your symptoms than there's something wrong with her, and you should quickly find a new psychiatrist. It's really said how many psychiatrists are bad at their job.

    • @AllesInDunkelweiss
      @AllesInDunkelweiss 5 лет назад +131

      Also, I'm very critical of Psych2Go because sometimes the way they portray things isn't entirely correct. They are often wrong about the details, or oversimplify things. It kind of makes me angry when they get things wrong that you learn in the first semester of psychology school. Sometimes I doubt they even work with psychologists. At least not with enough of them.

    "Those with HFD often try to endure it without getting help."
    That hit on a different level. Feeling so messed up and damaged but never being able to talk about it because of the fear of rejection or being a burden to someone is the worst. So all you do is fighting your demons alone, acting strong and fixing others to make up for your own shortcomings. Sometimes you might give so much it leaves you completely drained but it makes you feel better in a strange way because you are holding the weight of the world so no one else has to suffer from that. It is almost like protecting everyone else by letting yourself get bruised and beaten up - completely unhealthy but utterly satisfying.

      no one/nothing cares how you feel. you gotta learn to live with it. just the way life goes, humans are instinctively selfish and it’s destructive but it’s not for us to change.

    • @Zeldasouls
      @Zeldasouls 5 лет назад +50

      Kade right... empathy must be foreign to you then. Not sure how this became a statement on humanity, but quite frankly, if people wouldn’t be “realists” (not saying that facts aren’t important) and take a minute to be charitable to others, then the “truth” of humanity becomes good, not bullshit excuses not to care about others because “humans are naturally destructive”. Fuck that shit, I help others as much as possible, I donate to charity, I go to the nearby soup kitchen, I give complements to people I don’t know, all to make humanity a little better, so why not take personal responsibility and do the same. This isn’t a reply SPECIFICALLY to you, but to anybody who thinks as you do. Just to clarify the purpose of my initial comment, (in case anyone brings that up) it was to emphasize that in the current educational system, nobody cares how you’re doing, they care about the numbers. I will keep focused on the numbers, and be successful. Have a good day :)

    • @kade1348
      @kade1348 5 лет назад +7

      ZeldashR You go to nearby soup kitchens to make YOU feel better about yourself. You donate to charity and compliment people to make you see yourself as a “good person”. It all boils down to your own personal benefit. Very bleak mindset to adopt but it keeps our species moving

    • @Zeldasouls
      @Zeldasouls 5 лет назад +22

      Kade No my friend, I donate and do these things to help others, which In turn makes me feel better because I like helping others. That is how humanity could be if people took personal responsibility and didn’t claim it’s an innate human issue that is causing people to be assholes thereby giving them an excuse to be an asshole. Do not assume selfishness in motive 100% of the time. Otherwise you are part of the problem.

    I had HFD since 2nd grade.
    It slowly turned into clinical depression. Now I'm still suffering from it. For 5 years I've already been going to a psychiatrist. I'm 14 years old now and I'm still fighting it.
    If anybody sees this and feels the same, just know that it gets better when you get help. It's nothing to be ashamed of.
    You all can do it! Let's all live happy together, even if you don't see that it's getting better now.

      Do you know the origin(s) of your depression?
      If yes that's great you can work on it.
      If not, try to think logically.
      Then, say to yourself that death isn't the solution. Future can be changed from steps and decisions you make. Learn from mistakes or problems, think about yourself before others, if they insult you, ignore them, you have the right to say that what they say is subjective. Only you can decide of your future.
      Flaws are parts of humans, they made what you are.
      Think about your strengths, if you have none, create them, develop them and improve yourself.
      What you want won't come to you if you don't make a move.
      Good luck.

    I have a feeling I might have HFD, or some sort of depression.
    I don't want to diagnose myself, I just want to find a way to pinpoint what my problems is with a mental disorder or something.
    I wish I can ask someone for help. And I can, my boarding school has like five counselors I can talk to. But it's terrifying. (I have a thing where I get nervous asking for things I might need or want). Will I waste their time? Am I being too selfish? My two roommates have depression. What if theirs is worse than mine and I need to suck it up and be there for my friends instead of focusing on my own problems?
    It sucks. But hey, you get used to it after a while.
    Edit: So basically, I tried a lot of things to help this. But I'm a coward, man. I can't go up to somebody and ask for things. It's even difficult to tell and employee at a fast food place I didn't get my food. I thought I was alright when I was blessed with my roommates. I felt alright. The negative energy disappeared. I felt it everywhere, especially with the history of this school. So many people were murdered and raped... It's crazy.
    But suddenly, it started coming back. It always happens. Just when I think I'm free from these feelings, it eventually returns to bite me in the ass.
    I can't open up to people. I tried telling my mom, and she only shrugged it off. I tried telling my friends, but they ended up telling their stories about how depressed they were and I realized it was hopeless. I'm alone. Well, of course I'm not but still.
    I had 4 long torturous years of self deprication and living with this thing. It either grows or depletes. I'm at the point where I'm desperate for help. I'm sure you guys have it worse than me, and I'd love to help! Maybe it'll make me feel better? Usually when I help my friends feel better, I feel better. It feels like I understand them, and their weird energy rubs off on me. It's a temporary relief.
    I even took up running these last couple years. I suck, but it helps. I may not be the fastest, but I try. I like the feeling it gives me when I run.
    I guess I'll just have to focus on the positive, and try to do something about this, but there will be times when nothing will work.
    But that's life right? We won't be able to learn if we're happy and wise all the time. Maybe this is a blessing rather than a curse.

    I got depression and anxiety in a young age:
    When I was 9 My family and I moved to a different country, and I had to move to another school. I was not very fluent in the language, for that I got bullied
    For being “dumb” and “a stand out” I’m not very fluent of speaking the language but I could understand every word they’re saying. That lasted for about a year until I finally cracked I realized while I was getting older..I was getting un happier..It made studying and socializing very complicated. And after the bullying incident, I got anxiety. But home was no help either. my parents always compares me to other kids and saying “I should be like them” and then those words were said very frequently and it hurt every time I hear those words. By then I got depression. Now that’s where things got out of Hand.
    * I worry to much yet but at the same time I don’t* I never told anyone about my disorder. But my friends eventually found out. I didn’t want them to think that *the happy girl on school* was weak and helpless. But they supported me, Im glad someone cared. I never gotten help till this day. And I’m not think of getting it either. I rather drag my self down that drag everybody else down with me. If you read the whole thing thanks for your time. :)

Sometimes, I hear them talking negative about suicidal people and how those depressed people are stupid think they can waste life like that. Okay, I just want to clarify some stuff that was bothering me here. First off, high functioning depression usually refers to dysthymia, just because usually, with less symptoms, people have a tendency to manage better and, due to the chronic and constant nature of it, convince themselves that this is normal and fine.
    Secondly, dysthymia is defined as ‘usually AT LEAST two years,’ not the two to three years listed here. Unless it’s not referring to dysthymia, in which case I’m confused because there’d be too much variety to slap those numbers on.
    Furthermore, when dysthymia ‘progresses’ into major depression, dysthymia is still there. It just means there are episodes of more intense symptoms, or possibly even a worsening of the chronic state you’re in. That’s chronic major depression, which has sort of been absorbed into dysthymia? Either way, this is double depression which very different from just having either one singularly, and usually harder to treat. WebMD has an article on it, look up double depression if you’re interested in it.
    Lastly, the bit about higher intelligence is kind of weird. Firstly, when you normally hear links between intelligence and mental illness, it’s because intelligence can lead to a) ostracizing from peers, b) an inability to connect and relate well with peers, and c) more thinking and introspection which gives you a higher chance of overthinking things. You may compare yourself to others more, be more aware of any failures or flaws, or get overwhelmed with certain less productive lines of thought. What the video is talking about seems to be increased productivity, leading to a higher degree of skill and knowledge, as a coping mechanism. In other words, distracting yourself and doing more when you’re upset, leading to a higher degree of ability. I’m not sure if that counts as ‘intelligence,’ rather than just working hard, but then again, what is intelligence anyways?
    So yeah, if anyone read this all the way through, I hope it was informative. Have a great day, and remember, it doesn’t hurt to see a therapist if you don’t need one, but it does if you don’t when you really are in need. And hey, therapy is nice when you’re just struggling with life in general.

    • @blubbblubb6239
      @blubbblubb6239 4 года назад +6

      Totally agree with you! Lately my therapist mentioned HFD to me and put it together with dystymia. But since dystymia is described with low intensity of symptoms, I see a missing definition. I see myself rather with double depression with just playing as if I had my life pulled together. But for that state there's no name. The thing is, people see me 99% high functioning and therefore think, I can't be as depressed. Just veeery few people take my symptoms seriously and then talk about severe depression... It's confusing all this labelling...

    I haven't been diagnosed with HFD, but I find it painfully accurate when I especially here that the person feels tired, guilty, restless and having suicidal thoughts. I find it really hard to accept things that are not detailed enough, or when I miss something out, I get a burnout.
    I don't want to diagnose myself since I'm not a therapist, but I'm visiting him/her soon, and I hope the diagnose will be accurate and treatable. Frankly, I also pray for those people that suffer from HFD are getting support from their family and friends, so they don't feel they have to deal with it on their own.

    I have depression and anxiety and I’m currently getting help, I don’t even think my big sister knows since she’s in college and isn’t around very often. I feel worthless, tired, suicidal and guilty all the time. I’m also very stressed since I’m in all honors classes. I really don’t want to disappoint anyone so I tried to hide all my feelings and lie about everything while inside I was like a building crumbling down. Inside it was like hurricane that would never end. I’m trying to get help and we are going to just start with talk therapy and if we have to, get to more restrictive things. I might have to even get medication for it. My friend has depression too and I think that if I start talking to her about my things then I’ll be a burden to her because hers might be worse than mine. People tell me all of the time, “Why are you depressed? You have such a nice life. So many people have it worse than you.” That makes me feel even worse and want to hold it in even more.

    I was diagnosed a year ago with Major Depression and Anguish Syndrome (a type of Anxiety), for me, well I knew it a long time ago, yet I didn't want to get help, as I thought I was causing troubles to those around me. I started a treatment with meds and some sessions, yet 4 months passed and without the support of my family could no longer get these meds and pay the sessions. Since then I have felt worse and worse, yet there's nothing I can do about it. Somehow, despite feeling suicidal most of the days I'm here, not sure why but, knowing there are people out there who want to help understand, to make more people aware of this mental illnesses makes me feel hopeful that if I somehow keep going soon there will be another way to help myself and others. Thank you for all your hard work, the love and If there's someone out there who's fighting too, we can do it, we are humans who deserve to live and love and so many things more. Keep on everyone.

    i don’t know why i’m commenting on this video, but i want to- I very fleetingly saw a stress management school counsellor, where i told her all of my struggles, then proceeded on to analyse and justify my reaction to every single one of them. and all she could provide me with was a “you may be suffering from HFD and HFA, and your analysis is pretty damn accurate and good luck!” to put it bluntly. i can’t go to a professional to “get help” because the only way i can actually heal from this is to receive genuine, sincere compassion from someone whose able to understand/relate to me on at least on wavelength of my problematic personality and thought process. does it stem from me being an infj in a toxic environment with many thoughtless impressionable extroverts around me that just make me feel that much more lonely in a crowded room, or from the fact that i feel like i’ll never be able to understand myself or find someone that just is able to understand that much more and accept me for who i am beneath the bright and smiley surface i try my best to portray to others. the thing is- i can’t act any other way, because it’ll just make my loneliness/inability to find any semblance of similarity with almost everyone- even other infjs, more profound and prominent to myself and just deepen my own supposed “hfd”, and i can’t be “myself”- if that even exists.

      same. i think it's probably have been 5 years for me :) but i've never tell anyone about it because i feel like i'm just overreacting and i'm afraid of what they would think if i said i might have hfd. last year my sister was diagnosed with mdd and attempted suicide, but thankfully her roommates found her before it was too late. my parents has started giving more attention to her and scheduled for an appointment with a therapist. as much as i am happy that she's getting help, it actually made me feel worse because i feel like "if nobody has ever noticed that i have depression, then it''s probably nothing" and "maybe i'm just overreacting because i'm jealous of the attention that my sister gets?" throughout the whole 5 years dealing with hfd, i've never once thought of seeking help, but now with everything that's going on with corona virus, i really want to seek for help. i'm tired of dealing with this. but it sucks more that i can't do anything about it. currently i'm just waiting for this pandemic to (hopefully) end and possibly meet with the counselors at my school? idk. but lately it's been really hard for me. idk why i decided to rant here, but it kind of feel good, since i have nobody that i can talk to anyway :)

      It's 3-4 to me, the worst part is that they seem to care, but don't believe it's serious just because i'm about to be 15

    I feel so blue every once in a while I'm afraid it could be a type of clinical depression.
    wish I could meet you all around a campfire so we could share our stories.
    best wishes from Brazil !

    Sometimes watching these videos can be scary with how relatable the descriptions can be.
