    My Brother's and I were digging a privy behind a turn of the century farmhouse-finding different glass wares and such. One of the items found was oblong and white. We took it to a couple of antiques stores for id. We were told it was an alabastar dildo.

    I’m almost positive that the small, oval frame with glass would have been a brooch pin for a small portrait, containing either a tintype or a miniature portrait painting. It likely had a pin back, which would have been soldered to two points on the back of the frame. These were very popular during the Victorian era. The glass was thick to slightly magnify the image and to protect the portrait. It would have been worn on the lapel, or the front of a jacket.

    Could you please enlighten me on what a 'rat fink' inkwell is? I couldn't find any information on the interwebs.

    • @BottleNed
      @BottleNed  4 месяца назад +2

      Back in the day, as a business, if you were looking to package your product in a bottle you would choose the style aka shape/design of your bott from a catalog. Each type of product IE soda, whiskey, bitters, ink had a basic size n shape of bott to signify the contents. But there were variations you could choose from. For instance if you were bottling ink your company may choose between the “cone” style, the “umbrella”, the “igloo”, the “rat fink” and so on….the ink bott from the video is the rat fink style. French in origin I believe. Hope this novel helps lol

      Don't know if your aware but crescent city ca is the 13 oldest annexed city in ca.
      But I could really care less if you believe me or not!
      I know what the last two went for at auction.
      Not for sale !
      DEL Norte was in the gold fields and only natural harbor between San Francisco to Columbia river ...
      Hopping off spot to the southern oregon gold fields .
      Crescent city had over 25 bars on front street back in the 1850's more alcohol and whisky drank here than most gold rush towns .

    @BottleNed Do you have any thoughts on the people who think San Francisco couldn’t have been built as quickly as it was, with just hand tools? They seem to think San Francisco’s ornate stone architecture pre-existed the pioneers, etc. I’ve always thought it was a goofy belief, and just thought you might have some insight, since you regularly dig up evidence of the far reaching trade network and industry in the area.

    • @stretch3179
      @stretch3179 4 месяца назад

      John Levi's channel will shed light on that topic. He has several videos on the time lines and worlds fairs ect.

    • @k1_w3
      @k1_w3 4 месяца назад

      @ stretch3179 I’ve watched a few of Levi’s videos. They’re entertaining, but the idea that the pioneers didn’t build San Francisco, seems pretty silly.

    • @BottleNed
      @BottleNed  4 месяца назад +2

      The gold rush built the city. Tens of thousands descended on the town in a matter of months to get rich. They abandoned the ships they sailed in on and ran for the gold fields, leaving a ghost harbor full of ships that could be used as storage or to house businesses like hotels and saloons. Then they scuttled the ships to designate property lines for water lots, built sea walls and filled the whole cove in with sand, rock, and BOTTLES ! The city developed fast but it was initially just a tent and board city full of ghost ships. It wasn’t until after the crazy gold rush days died down that they built it into a real city.

    Ah.... explains why my comment bounced, just wanted to mention those contaminated soil dumpsters, can contain quite a range of contaminants, anything from just hydrocarbons like diesel or gasoline through to very nasty heavy metals. So procedure on site when we filled these was hazmat, rubber gloves, face shields, dust masks and handling protocols........ but I always rescued the old bots 👍.

    • @BottleNed
      @BottleNed  4 месяца назад

      Thank you for the bott-rescue efforts, my soldier of The Bott !
      Yes, there is some nasty stuff in those dumpsters & I wouldn’t recommend for anyone to mess w them. That being said, prying some bott out of them occasionally seems like a minimal risk scenario but who the hell knows - BottleNed ain’t no scientist, he’s a Bottologist !

    • @lucdaigle2394
      @lucdaigle2394 4 месяца назад

      @@BottleNed By all means rescue the botts, be sure to wear protection, wash your hands afterwards at the very least and no dirt sniffing and especially don't lick the botts. I've cleaned contaminated sites and filled plenty of dumpsters to be sent to hazardous waste landfills.
