- BottleNed here ! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from the darkness of the bottom of a mysterious void deep underneath the inner city that hasn't been seen by human eyes in over a century...how's that for a Christmas card? BottleNed wishes all his BottHeads a Merry viewing of this epic quest which began over 4 years ago, when I discovered a mysterious void which seemed to swallow everything that fell into it; probes, stones, digging bars; all of which seemed to vanish into blackness upon falling into the abyss. And then...a well-placed light into the hole illuminated the titillating shapes of dusty antique BOTTLES, laying exactly as they had fallen...over a century ago! And so for years, he plotted and schemed a way to access the mystery void. And now, here is the culmination of BottleNed's labor; presenting: THE 3RD ANNUAL BOTTLENED CHRISTMAS SPECIAL !!!
UPDATE: There is also a chance the first hole in the video could've been used for wastewater storage, not for freshwater! I have made a special write-up on this on the community page, and everybody is invited to chime in with their thoughts !!
BottleNed has made this his full-time job. My objective is to share the excitement, dangers, & historical information gained from my digging adventures for everyone to enjoy & learn from. But I need some serious help paying basic bills along the way. Please click this link & consider becoming a Patron. Even $5/month helps !! Thank You !!

Why do you not use hand tools for excavating bottles, instead of man-sized shovels? 😊 Love the way you explain the history of objects throughout your video. ❤
Omg Ned. You’re hilarious. This is rad!!!!

That looks like a fun time! Even though there weren’t many botts, the time with friends is what’s worth it. Glad you guys had beer time after that haha
Hay Ned great video, I dug a volted cistern very similar to yours in Wiltshire England last year on a old farm : I had 500 bots out of mine and it was also used as a toilet , we even know when the house went to mains , let me know if you want to see my videos or picks, mine had been cemented over around 1920 , the owners had owned the farm since 1948 and never knew anything about it till the floor started to crack and drop away last year , mine was 4 foot deep and filled to the top at one end , it was mega exciting to dig it : Dave
Noiccccce! I love those holes that seem sparse at first on one side and then BAM - mega dumper on the other end !!
Good show Ned, greetings from uk.cor blimey...

Hi Ned the domed well is a early soakage chamber , it dispersed sewage water and grey water from the house and toilet .A separate tank would separate sold waste from liquid ,called septic tank which are still widely used today. The bricks are staged so that water can disperse throughout the ground, this helped with hygiene and oda smell ,i have excavated the bricks out and found old bottles behind the bricks, back fill with crushed rock ready for building, on love your work i love old stuff to
I agree ! Would the separate tank be in front of the liquid disposal tank ? What was the age of the botts you found behind the bricks - do you think they were tossed by workers building the feature ?
The septic tank is the first tank from the dunny and house , septic tank has a wall which holds back the floating hard waist .The wall in the tank has a opening on the bottom, allowing liquids to pass through the other side of the tank ,simple but works very well . The inlet is not quite top of tank ,the outlet is 2 inches lower than the inlet so that the tank always holds liquid. From the septic tank outlet runs sewer pipe to the sockage well ,if you look at the roof of domed brick well you will see inlet hole . These soakage chambers take all liquids from house and toilet, bathroom kitchen, but they don't take storm water or water from the house roof.Ive been in the earthmoving business for over 20 years, and have dismantled a few of these soakages chambers and there is always old junk and bottles behind them, but only small amounts yes I think they throw in what ever is rubbish including what they drank out of when digging building and backfilling .
I have a rain water tank on my property built late 1800s the inside is plasterd walls and floor. There are bits of glass old plates around the out sides of the tank ,.
Regards Gordon
Forgotten to mention the bottles are late 1800s black glass, gingerbread, sauce and bear bottles broken China
I have a safety harness I don’t use anymore would you like it??
I have one that I’ve used before and should’ve used in at least of the holes featured in this episode lol. Thanks though !
We used to take down the bricks in those cisterns. We would always find bottles behind the brick. Reason being is that they dug the hole much bigger than what replaced by the brickwork. Sometimes trash was deposited into that void. We found a embossed Portland oval flask in that void once. Then again we broke a sewer line when we were down in one. It filled up with raw sewer right up to my chest before I could get out....ah the memories! BTW Page is a keeper, you would not be able to get 99 percent of women to go down that hole let alone wanting to go in!
That’s crazy, I was watching the video with Paige last night and was telling her what if in the footage I had seen the embossing in a circular slug plate of an amber oval flask sticking out from behind the bricks and thought oh my God I have to go re-dig that whole pit! And I mentioned to her that sometimes bottles are found behind the brick work which is totally legitimate because you figured that workers digging the hole at least would be drinking and depositing things as they laid the brick just like a wall in a house that’s being constructed!
Did you see any rhyme or reason behind where the bottles were behind the bricks in the pits you dismantled? Were they lower in the pit towards the bottom or higher?
Sometimes right around the top but sometimes it would be all the way down. Wells can have it too. Also, check the filler pipe that dumps into the cistern. They would dump garbage around that old pipe. We dug tons of bottles from around those.@@BottleNed
Why not put bottle and stuff in basket to giving them. So then can dig more dirty out in basket. But please be carefully. 🤦🏼♀️🙂
I see your Schwatrz is as BIG as mine!
I found it in a Cracker Jack box !!
That tire wasnt old
I noticed that. 70s or maybe even 80s whenever they laid that sewer line. I did a forensics analysis of the tire for 5 mins and then decided to cut it because there was a lot of non-bott fluff in this vid already. Should’ve kept it in - it just adds to the whole investigation.
Do you ever do creek missions. I punched a hole in San Luis Obispo County creek, and pulled out almost 180 bottles. Hole collapsed. Tons more. Interested?
“Interested”?? Is the sky blue ?? Haha
You guys should get a blower like what us telephone guys use to keep manholes ventilated when we work in the underground. Also, call 811 before you dig anywhere there might be underground or buried utilities. Obviously if you're hand digging, this is less of an issue but it's nice to know what's running through your dig site.
Edit to note that I could really use some Coco-Mariani, you know, just to get my day started... :P
You need to do a video on just finding the pits/privys . I’ve got the tools just not the knowledge on finding them
It’s in the works !
My mind is officially blown,We delivered dirt before the hole needed filling, then buried the bottles to dig them up. Merry
Xmas, I gotta go y'all.
😂
Thats a drain vault for a flush toilet, probably a privy nearby
That is a distinct possibility ! I covered this in a previous episode but didn’t mention it in this one so I did a special write-up on the channel’s community page and credited you ! Thanks for pointing that out !!
I'm curious as to how much antique handmade bricks from 1860 are worth over there. The old bricks here sell for 1 to 2 dollars each, that cistern is probably over 5000 bricks that are just stacked together, no mortar. Just unstack from the cistern place on pallets and send to a pre arranged buyer, plus you get any bottles in the back fill, win-win.
Someone should have thrown a bottle of lotion down to you guys!🤣 'It puts the lotion on it's skin'
If you take your botts with you we can just digg them back up lol
Long lost western sayings number 253- ‘oh they’ve been on the Mariani again!’ 🤣
" It might have been better if we dug together, so never , say never"
I want some of that cocaine wine. 😆
It would’ve helped on this dig for sure
Should pull the ladder up
Surprised that cistern didn't collapse in the earthquake.
Maybe that’s why it’s misshapen down there!
So are we now calling 3 P, CPP? Cistern Poking Paige!
Why would anybody steal THAT car?
You're dedicated, that's for certain. Even if I was willing to outlay for the dirt, I would've had to bow out of cleaning up that biohazard of a trash field.
Would have been quicker and easier to rake up then shovel.
Too bad there isn't a safe and efficient way to repurpose those ancient bricks. They've got to be worth something.
I was thinking the same thing! They’re so beautiful and handmade. I personally don’t have room for them but I’m sure there’s plenty of people who could use them. But I like to keep them where they are at the same time because that structure is kind of beautiful and it’s still preserved down there
I know that the guy on Adventure Archeology is collecting embossed bricks for a patio.
Don't forget to lay off the xmas lasagna.
Scored a free tub of prison grade mashed potatoes at the same holiday party this year and good news - it’s having the opposite effect!
@@BottleNed Got me laughing hard!
If you thought burying that cistern was bad, just think about 100 years from now when Bottle Bob comes along and discovers it.
It's too bad you don't have the budget to work with where you could remold the broken glass you find into Bottle Ned glass bricks that say: Too late sucker Bottle Ned was here. I mean if you had a brick like that to put say half way down the cistern, the future Bottle Bob would find it and think; 'that Bottle Ned guy was only half bad since I only dug 10 yards of dirt to find his message on this brick.
Lol I have hermetically sealed letters to future diggers that I have put inside Gatorade botts that I bury in some of my ABDs (Already Been Dug holes)
We don’t need a damn history lesson just dig some bottles and quit saying the Lord’s name so many times
The un(?)intentional sexual vocabulary you're using would make a perfect base for a RUclips poop video
What a waste of time including me for having watched it
You can only blame yourself, you had a choice, and YOU failed.
Okay, Mr. Grinch
