How Helldivers 2 Ruined Its Reputation...

- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we take a look at how one of the most popular and beloved games of the last few months, Helldivers 2 seems to have nuked it's own reputation by forcing a linking of Playstation accounts to the PC, for no good reason. Thanks for watching!

As soon as I saw ‘mandatory PlayStation account connection’, I pretty much associated it as being a Sony move rather than an Arrowhead move.
Look at the way their rep in discord responded. I don't think it's just Sony, otherwise they wouldn't respond like they have.
@@advertslaxxorits probably a sony rep in disguise then
Almost as if it was there in the launch trailer and steam page the entire time
@@advertslaxxor tbh a game dev cant really say "yeah, our publisher is dumb", they kinda have to either defend it or not interact at all
@@advertslaxxoryou should check again lol. they've changed their tune after finding out psn isnt available in many regions where people play helldivers
if those were the requirements, they shouldn't have sold the game in 200 regions when only 72 of those regions support PSN logins.
They intentionally want to make User vs Steam.
Whatever Steam move now goin to hurt them, but god. Helldivers 2 sell their soul to sony, and yep dont even give any Devs a cent of doubt. Always go full doubts on them. Baldur Gate might even suffer the same situation.
real
@@drecognis thats why i always laugh at their and xbox "we believe that gaming is for everyone" or "Play has no limits" bs. they will take a dump on their fans heads and ban them any time of the year if political picture will require
@michaelbuto305 if you look at Larian's past, they got screwed over by publishers. They learned their lesson and Kickstarted their best games before BG3. I doubt they would fall for the publisher trap again since they work as their own publisher.
Yeah, it isn't actually an issue of it being some kind of surprise betrayal (the eventual requirement for a PSN account has been listed on the store page from day one), it's that they still _sold the game_ in regions that aren't supported by the PSN. Like sure, people should've actually read the popup at the start of the game and/or the notice on the steam page, but why was it available for purchase to begin with in places like Russia unless mass refunds were always part of the plan. It's just unfathomably poor foresight all around.
The Helldivers 2 community manager hired by Arrowhead to run their Discord is encouraging players to leave negative reviews so they'll have more pull when they go to Sony and say "See? This is a stupid idea."
Edit: It worked, Sony pulled back and now the Helldivers subreddit is performing a new campaign to reverse their negative reviews and restore Helldivers 2's reputation. This morning, Helldivers 2 had 45% positive reviews. Now, just a few hours later, it's up to 64%. I expect things will be back to normal in a few days. And that community manager almost lost his job, but just barely landed on his feet.
thats cute, i dont think sony cares
@@NitroDS welp, refund it is then.
@@PIJIM0N Well, the thing is... you can't, because they waited 4 months for people to play the game for more than two hours before making this change.

I can’t wait till Sony goes "Technically, playing Helldivers 2 online is a PS Plus feature so we're gonna need you to pay for PS Plus on Steam". Mark my words.
Honestly that was the first thing that came to my mind when a little while ago they announced that they would allow Playstation Trophies on PC version of their games as it to me at least was an indication of Sony trying to rope in PC player base into their Playstation ecosystem and possibly in the future introducing Playstation Plus requirement for their online games on PC, also it helps to overinflate their Playstation user numbers through the PC user base.
As if Games for windows live 2.0 is going to end well
If they are doing this, yeah it's a sign of their Monopoly Practices.

didn't even think of that. with any luck it could be an extremely high-profile example that could bring "stop killing games(TM)" even more attention. maybe divers should be made aware of it since it is a change in the ownership agreement which a lot of people didn't consent to when they bought it (mainly people who skipped account linking)

Yeah, but unfortunately, I doubt it
@@spacebassist The account linking was listed from the moment you could buy the game, people who bought it agreed to these terms on purchase date. As Muta says, these requirements were temporarily removed so the game could be played, but now that everything has been fixed up, account linking is being enforced again.
That would work for a single player game but the nature of Helldivers itself means the game is gonna finish at some point.
As long as there are players and it is worth it for the Devs to add enemies and reshuffle the map they will do it, but as soon as the player count drops are gonna drop it. And no law will help you with that, who's gonna pay for the servers? The government?

Sony's security is fine, its just its more publicized when its breached. In the same time span Microsoft has had over 200 data breaches. They just are better at burying it. I wish steam would just come out and tell anyone who wants to sell a game on their platform that third party signups are not allowed. So what if some developers decide not to sell on steam? With how popular steam is, developers will think twice before trying to do this.

the GIANT difference between this, and ANY other game requirering 3rd party account is: they are actually required on all thoses other game.
So if you don't wanna do it => you can refund within the 1st 10 mins. Sames goes for "oh, i can buy the game but i can't create an account because of my country"

you might be able to make a bullshit Sony account, cheat, get banned, then make another Sony account. well if there's a way to unlink your steam account.
Bro for REAL. It's _insane._
Lets be honest, this is all to "boost" sonys gaming stats for the next meeting
I think the ban thing is because you can family share games to easily avoid a ban on pc. With a PSN account requirement that adds extra steps most people won't be willing to do after a ban.
A player from China tried to link their psn acc with false info got banned in Helldivers 2 for using a VPN
I heard about that. I've read that Sony actually has it written into their EULA that players cannot use VPNs. So ridiculous.
That is funny.
They don't want the people who legally bought the game to figure out a way to legally play the game.
Hot take but - China should have it's own PSN, Steam, Internet - everything. They shouldn't be allowed to play games with people who aren't also in China. Chat stream calling -ok obviously but GAMING? No. For real how do we answer this cultural issue that encourages cheating, among other equally unpleasant things?
VPNs are illegal in China and overall China is completely different compared to any other region. I'd take the China ban as a grain of salt

I love how everyone glosses over the Steam store page not having anything listed about the Sony account, or the game itself having the account creation page, at launch. I didn't see the account creation screen until several days later watching a let's play (I didn't get the screen at all, and I had booted up the game within an hour of launch), and about three hours after the game was available for download, the store page added the handy little gold box advising about the PSN account. If I had known this was going to happen, I'd have the screenshots to prove it, but of course I had no reason to think it was going to be a bait and switch.
I had my account info stolen in one of Sony's many data breaches, after which I had to spend hours wrangling with the Ministry of Foreign Customer Service to get my PSN account closed. Of course I don't want to make another one. When Microsoft bought Minecraft and made an XBox account mandatory, I put that game down after putting thousands of hours into it over the years, and I've never gone back or touched any other game that requires one.
There's so many appalling factors at play here, but perhaps the worst one is the army of Sony simps calling the folks who are affected or were deliberately misled by these changes (such as myself, who purchased the game with the understanding that there wasn't even a PSN account in the picture, let alone to be added in as mandatory after I purchased the game and played and enjoyed it) whiny crybabies over it. As I've said to so many of them, it being "easy" to surrender your humanity to a soulless money-hungry conglomeration does not make it a moral imperative.
Without respect, we reject.
The difference with those other games is you are making that decision to make an account and give them your data. When you are pressured or forced into giving it, that is not okay on so many levels.

The £250 had a lot of new benefits including a DLC that was suppose to be included with the £150 (as said on their website) then they changed it, thus pretty much the same scenario, taking money from the countries that no longer can access the game due to a PSN account being required, thus they lost their money, as steam are declining the majority of refunds due to time played

This is one of major reasons why piracy thrives in PC gaming.
You want to be a good person and support game developers, you buy the game, but in order to play even a single player you have to use online connection at all time, use launchers that work in the background, on top of that during your gameplay "anti-cheat or anti-piracy" software keeps running in the background scanning your PC and slowing it's performance.
Then someone downloads pirated version of the game and voila, no launchers, no 3rd party software running in the background, much better performance and higher FPS, no need to stay online or having internet connection at all.
And then Gaming Industry complains and cries about piracy -__- THEY ARE THE REASON PEOPLE GO AFTER IT.
I bought Hogwarts Legacy day 1, but due to it's bad performance on PC's in the first two weeks (thanks to denuvo), I played and finished entire game playing on pirated version, wtf is this.
It's a fallacy that "supporting devs" comes from buying games. In many situations in life - that's not how financing works. Many companies get paid up front TO develop the game, they OWE money to the publisher. Yes you are helping but you are helping them pay their debts. It's a different thing. It's like - instead of encouraging more of the same from developers (as I'm sure many customers believe their purchases DO) - you are more voting for the management of the studio and putting money down on their continued efforts to... maybe make more games? ... Maybe not? ... HellDivers 2 was not bankrolled by that studio on their own. They have bills, and "support" has little to do with that math.

Prove to yourself that you have the strength and the courage to be FREE! Become a Review Diver!
I think the reason why this flared up the way it has is twofold:
1: They dumped this on a lot of players that thought that it wasn't mandatory to link accounts, and the fact that you could skip linking when they prompted you (if they prompted you at all, they didn't for me) made players think that you didn't have to.
2: It is legitimately a great game, and people do not want to lose it or make it more complicated than it is, also as a side note, we do not know what Sony will do in the future if they succeed with this.
3: the community has been trained to mass go after an objective and the major order fuck Sony just came in
I know. So do we all. Every single PlayStation PC port will now be required to make a PSN account.
Re No. 1 - without it detracting at all from people's right to be angry here, it is the player's fault if they thought it wasn't going to become mandatory at some point. The game tells you this from the get-go, and as mentioned in this very video, it was only disabled to help server stability at launch. Anyone who didn't read or understand that only has themselves to blame for being *surprised* now. They can still blame Sony and Arrowhead though for the original decision to require linked accounts, since it is only a detriment to Steam players.
3, Playstation Accounts have very little mileage on PC. "But other companies like Ubisoft have account requirements all the time" but yeah, that's the thing, it's well established, and with a Ubisoft or EA account, you can play a lot of games, but a PS acc doesn't have those options which makes it NOT worth the security risk. And with a Microsoft account, that has a million goddamn uses at this point, so you get tons of mileage. You get none of that with Playstation.
I'm not annoyed by necessarily needing an account for certain games, IF there's good cause. This does NOT have good cause and is needlessly putting so much as risk.
@MrJakeasaur98 then why sell to countries where the option to have PSN doesn't exist? Keep in mind there's a record of Sony banning folks for using VPN to lie about their location so that option is a wash too.
At that point, mandatory PSN for a game that has a playerbase that cant legit do PSN even if they wanted is effectively stealing third worlder and even some EU citizens' money.
I don’t want to make a PS account if I bought a gaming computer, and actively use steam as my platform. It pissed me off when rocket league went to epic games, and this stuff still pisses me off to this day. I just want to use 1 service for my games that start with 1 service.

@JowoeBunchaNumbers sure we can. We just won't buy their games. Simple.

The most surprising aspect of this situation is when Steam refunds customers their money. After playing for hundreds of hours, they still receive a refund? The game's terms of service clearly stated that a PlayStation account would be necessary at launch, which should automatically exclude you from getting a refund.
Thing is it wasn't that well known and literally pulled the rug under people who literally aren't allowed to make such accounts, as in they need to use VPN, but then if they do that they'd get banned entirely, making it a literal scam in some countries and the reason why only RECENTLY its unlisted for people in those countries.
And not everyone is lucky with a refund, plenty of people in that situation still have yet to get their money back after this
Then why launch the game in countries that do not get support? Scam.
We should clarify that the devs were blindsided by this decision. Sony screwed them
Them saying linking accounts provides safety is like cops telling people in the ghetto its safe to sleep with the windows and doors open
Why is banning such an issue anyway? It's a PVE game, just kick the cheater/griefer. We can handle it ourselves already.

The difference between Helldivers 2 and every other game that has historically required a secondary account, is that HD2 had the requirement disabled almost from the start for technical reasons, but thousands upon thousands of players had no idea that it was actually a thing because both developer and publisher sources of info for whether it was mandatory or would be mandatory *were not consistent or implied it would not be required*.
