After following FFM for several years now, it is evident that Christine and Dave respect their children and in return, the kids respect them. I love the fun banter whenever the kids are in the vids. There is general joy in the household.
I’m glad to say, both of our daughters went through their teenage years without being angsty and rude. Respect for each other seems to be the key. ❤

I always told my daughter if she ever was in an uncomfortable situation or didn’t want to do something, just use me as her excuse - “my mom said I cant or I have to get home”. She really appreciated this

Omg yes, my kids are in their late 20s and early 30s, and I have told them to use me as an excuse anytime. Instead of oh mom says no, it's mom needs a ride to the Dr, or I need to help her with yard work. I will always be their mom.

I have 3 daughters, all grown and married. They were amazing children and teens. I so enjoyed every step of them growing up. Their friends mothers would complain about the angsty girls and how rude they were, and I would just keep quiet. Then I heard the way they spoke to their daughters and knew where they got it from. My girls are kind, generous and productive members of society, and I’m so proud of them. I’m a widow now, and they take good care of their mama! Christine, you and Dave have raised some awesome children and I know you guys are sooo proud!

I’m 30 with a 3 year old daughter. I have an okay relationship with my mom (at best). You think your daughter is awesome, and she thinks you’re awesome. And I think that’s HUGE. You convey that to her and to your audience that parenting your daughter is a joy. When most people think parenting teenage girls sucks. You think she is a cool person. You respect her and think highly of her. And she reciprocates that. And that goes a long way. In the toddler years sometimes it can be tough to not feel burdened by certain aspects of parenting. But gosh my daughter is the coolest little person and I am going to try so hard to make sure she knows that as she grows.

My dad started when we were very young with building a solid foundation. Explaining everything, backing us up in situations, creating family traditions. As a teenager, he kept telling my brother and I no when we would ask to do things with friends so when I was about 14/15, we sat him down and went “we need to talk. You can’t keep telling us no all the time like this, we do our chores, we do everything expected of us. We keep our grades up, we don’t get in trouble.” Dad takes a long look at both of us and goes “you’re right. And this proves you two are ready to be trusted with extra freedom. I was waiting on you guys to initiate this conversation for that reason”
It blew my mind. As an adult I’m like “that was a genius way to evaluate our maturity levels, man is a legend” I don’t know anyone else who did this with their parents but it has lead to my dad having zero issues of respecting our choices as adults or trying to pressure us to do things any kind of way. I have a way better relationship with my family than a vast majority of my peers.

Love this interview. Hailey is so mature and wise for her age. She reminds me a lot of our daughter. I remember one time when our daughter was a teenager someone asked her to do something (that she shouldn’t do). She literally told them “I don’t do that but, even if I did, my mom would find out so no”.

So... story time... my mom had me at 34... 16 and 14 years after my siblings. My mom was my #1 caretaker, as I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 2. But I was a daddy's girl. Until i was 14. My dad passed, and all though we were prepared for it, it was rough. Ma always said there was a reason I was born, and both of us said it was so she wouldn't be alone. She raised me right, always there, my very best friend. She would go on all my field trips when i was in school, and most of my college trips. When she wasn't there, I called her every night. She even came and stayed with me in the college dorms. It's so hard for me now, because i am slowly loosing her to dementia. I can't call her 5 times a day when I am out and about. She can't remember how to text, so I can't send her all the funny pictures I used too. Me and my husband live with her and help care for her. But I miss her every day, even though she is still here.

My oldest daughter went to a highly selective top 20 university. She texted me from a freshman psychology class where the professor said you will turn out more like your parents than you think. The whole class moaned and went on with stories about not liking your parents. She was shocked!
I think mutual respect and treating them as a person while maintaining a parental role, not their friend, is a great step.

I’m in my 30s, partnered but not married, and I don’t have any kids so I’m not exactly your majority demographic. I always said that if I met the right partner and we decided we wanted children that I’d hope to have boys because they just seem easier and low key and don’t hate you as much during teenage years lol.
Your videos made me realize that if I ever have kids I really hope I have a little GIRL. Because the relationship you and Hailey have is so precious. If I ever have a daughter I hope I can raise her to be funny and smart and have an amazing relationship with her like you have with your daughter.
Thanks for sharing not only fun frugal content, but also your funny family antics.

i'm 40 and was completely 100% stuck just 'doing the kids and the mom' stuff for over 10 years. I have answered that way a LOT but I had lost myself. And I, unfortunately, at the time, didn't have an encouraging partner. (turned out to be extremely abusive and we escaped last year).
BUT that question is something i can imagine answering now like this: I USED to love to ride my bike, to boogie (like living room dance party style boogie), do thing for other primarily shoveling driveways and walkways because i LOVE shoveling snow and building snowmen and going sledding. Notice how it switched from "I used to love", to "I love". This now, me being the only parent of 4 children 100% of the time. And somehow having escaped the abuse and with even less time and energy. I'm finding myself again~! And I feel SO GOOD.
Love seeing you two together. Gives me hope for my daughter and I. shes also the only other girl. eldest girl with 3 younger brothers. it's chaos. 10 (daughter) and then 8, 5, 3 (sons).
    Have a WONDERFUL WEEK!!!
Sending smiles and sunshisne from Winnipeg, Canada! (North of North Dakota)

I just heard in a trauma conference (for my foster parent license), they now believe that the frontal lobe isn't fully developed until 30 now. I was kind of in shock because some parents allow smart phones and access to a lot of tech at like 7 (our schools start Ipads in 1st grade )... I can't imagine how overwhelming and damaging that could be. Also I am so glad to hear that looking back Hailey was grateful for a more strict parent. I sure hope my teens feel that way when they are older (now 13f and 15m). I hear the you are the most strict parent ever... they don't have smart phones either and our rule is when you are out of the house on your own then you can have it. They do have Gabb kids safe phones and I feel like it's enough to communicate for extra curricular actvities. They also have chromebooks to work on homework/fun time and I have monitoring and lock outs on those and shut off at the router at a certain time. Thanks so much for sharing this!! makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing to protect them.

Love you two. I agree with setting boundaries. Bedtime was strict. We're in an apartment. The neighbors upstairs have a 2 and 4 year old. Those kids run and jump all day. We never hear the parents telling them to stop. We also do not hear them ever tell them no. Neither do the kids have a consistent bedtime. So when they send them to bed they cry until they fall asleep. It seems for you and Hailey it was Buffy. For my daughter and I it was Charmed and Gilmore Girls. Have a f good one Ladies!

You two are absolutely amazing! I have two daughters, oldest and second oldest, birth order matters, I will fight y’all on it! I believe we have a healthy relationship, especially my second daughter. The trust and respect has always been there. The open communication and compromise was crucial! But I also had strict rules on certain things like no sleep overs and curfew. I talk to my kids respectfully and explain things to them. I answer any questions they have, appropriately based on age. I want them to come to me for answers not friends or Google, that’s where they get into trouble and see things or learn things that aren’t safe! My parents were open and honest with me growing up so I absolutely wanted that with my kids. I’m certainly not perfect by any means, but I’m growing up with them!
Thank you for doing this podcast with your daughter! It’s so wonderful and refreshing to see positivity on social media and see what a healthy relationship looks like! Good luck with adulting Haley! (Spelling? 🤷🏼‍♀️)😂 That’s how the caption spelt your name! ❤ to your family!

🎉❤nice to see the relationship between you! I think that sometimes personalities have a lot to do with whether the relationship between mother and child is good or mediocre. We know that you can't make relationships happen, there has to be a type of spark therein. If the mother doesn't inspire the spark when the child is young, I think that's where the relationship becomes severed! or disjointed between mother and child.

My kids are under 5 but I've been leaning towards the no sleepover rule but I'd love to hear why y'all decided to not do those for your kids.

I just remember my own experiences with sleepovers and decided I didn't want my son to ever feel like I did. When there's more than one kid sleeping over, bullying can happen, the creepy uncle or the older brother's friends show up, the parents aren't paying attention, the house rules are Very different, they eat weird stuff at weird times, the parents are super strict and scary - so many things. I remember one friend whose parents made us watch a family movie every time - they were rated R horror films. I'm still scarred from that. Anyway, my main goal is to keep my kid safe, mind and body. So it's always been no.

My son is in high school and band keeps scheduling things during dinner time and he is like what is this madness.. don’t they know it is dinner now. Structure is super important!!

After trying to teach SS kids for years I realized the schools scheduled everything during Wed nights at church and even Sunday's during the day. They are doing it on purpose! Stuff didn't used to be scheduled during meal times and church times.

Yes! Yes! Yes! lol!! Our parenting styles are very similar. AND I have 1 daughter + 5 sons, so we have a similar family dynamics. Right now my girlie is 17 and a senior. I laughed out loud when Hailey mentioned chauffeuring her brothers. My daughter is the preferred chauffeur and "babysitter." Our youngest 2 are 8 & 10, so babysitting is mostly just making sure they don't burn the house down. Our oldest 2 sons still live at home and attend a local community college, but it looks like my girlie will attend college 14 hrs from me. I know it will be amazing for her, but I will miss her tremendously!!

As a mother of five daughters ages 6, 8, 10, 11, and 12 I am hoping for the day I can have the oldest babysit for us. Hopefully in the next few years!

The freedom within boundaries! Yes! We've always done that and I've had it told to me, it's like a dog park... free to roam, but within the fence I set up. 😂🤣. I mean..... It works. Lol

My mom and sister are much closer, I think cause they spent more time together. Mom was more understanding of things she (my sister) needed and tried to accommodate her more. Even now, my mom and I arent as close. I joked to my sister i was the trial run to what not to do XD.
also.. always teams spike. I love James Marsters, I went to one his concerts a few years ago, and it was like one of the loveliest things ever. He is just the best human. (it was a comic con, so if you get the oppurtinity). I got to meet him at that event too and he was like "woah you watched buffy as a kid was that like okay? XD"

People don't want to say the truth and the truth is good people tend to be good parents. PERIOD. Terrible people make terrible parents.
Dave and Christine are awesome people who are of course awesome parents.
