The Japanese House: Tiny Desk Concert

The Japanese House, a.k.a. the recording project of U.K. singer-songwriter Amber Bain, put out my favorite album of 2023: In the End It Always Does is an irresistible electro-pop record full of warmly relatable songs about desire, regret and the fear that no one will ever love you as much as the dog nestled in your lap. It's a wonderful record that's buoyed by impeccably chosen guests - MUNA's Katie Gavin, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, two members of The 1975 - and a pervasive mood of low-key dreaminess.
At the Tiny Desk, Bain recasts four of In the End It Always Does' songs in fresh arrangements that swap out the synths while highlighting the more organic sounds of brushed drums, a violin, a spare piano and the occasional baritone sax. And, though she closes with the album's effervescent lead single "Boyhood," Bain also uses her set to center the album's softer material - particularly the lush gem "Baby Goes Again," which has no business languishing as a deep cut.

Kinda sad they didn’t play “Touching Yourself“ but thank you for finally giving Japanese House a tiny desk performance
Would have been an HR violation. lol jk. Yeah woulda been great.
Was thinking the same thing except kinda sad no EP or Good At Falling songs :(
literally gasped. video's 3 hours old and it showed up on my recommended feed. i've been waiting for them to be on tinydesk! i love them so much
Love that about NPR’s Tiny Desk! I noticed it right away today, as well.
literally same
omg geiko is a fan too
Chloe Kraemer (the violinist) also co-produced the new album, 'In the end it always does'. There's a great interview with her, Amber, and George on the Tapenotes podcast about it's creation.
this sounds amazing, thanks for the tip!!
She has great taste
*its creation
i’m Japanese. they're music is like a sunlight in spring. i can see beautiful landscape when listening this music. thank you!
Ordinarily, the audio mixing with Tiny Desk is immaculate and unmatched, but for the first time, it felt like the vocals were a bit low and buried in the mix. I felt myself wishing to hear Amber clearer at times. The rest of the instruments sounded amazing as usual, though! Love Japanese House and Tiny Desk ❤️
I almost feel like that’s how she sings though, she seems to hold back a bit. Which if that’s the case, boosting it more would sound a bit unnatural.
It‘s her lack of technique. Her intonation and breathing aren‘t perfect.
i think this mix is a pretty good nod to how her voice is mixed on the records. all of the bgvs in this performance are as prominent as her voice which is how all the layers and vocoders sound on the records. weird for an acoustic performance maybe but i think it works.
Came here to say the same thing. Amber's vocals don't have the presence they do on records which is sad 😕
I think it’s got to do with the fact that there are a lot of mics, with people not having their mouth close to them = a lot of bleed = less control over the mix.
I love the fact that she can create these lush, expansive sounds on her albums and then take those songs in a totally different direction live - these are essentially folk songs. She's such a great writer and I love hearing these songs with a different arrangement. Great music!
If this is your first time hearing the Japanese House, I am truly jealous of you. I wish I could rediscover all of her music again!
It's never too late!!! Go back to the very beginning of their discography, you won't be disappointed! All of their music got me through college (being a musician in college is unbelievably tough, so this was such an outlet for me). Happy listening! 🥰
This is me, and I'm in love
Amber Bain's songs are so moving! I can't count how many times I cried to The Japanese House. This performance gives me chills. I think I heard "Leon" for the first time in 2016 and I instantly became a fan. It's been beautiful to witness her growth and evolution.
I'm really thankful for everything Amber has been giving us throughout all of these years.
amber singing boyhood is so important to me.
not that it's needed, but care to share why?

A very nice set.
I’m totally impressed by the singer who just picked up a right-handed acoustic guitar, and flipped it around to play it left handed & up side down, with no adjustments at all.
Y’all should always try to get a good shot of the guitar headstocks, for us guitar nerds who want to see what instruments they’re playing.
So, it looks like two Guild acoustics, and a Fender Precision bass. Very nice.
I also really liked the violin, piano, drums, and the saxophone. They really enhanced the sound.
Rock On
Totally!!! Such a cool guitar sound for that reason
As a left handed guitar player I only watched the video to see if she was really holding chords 🤔
She wanted to be able to walk into anyone’s house with a guitar and be able to play it, so she refused to restring it. Nobody would teach her so she had to teach herself. Pretty cool
From a leftie who also plays guitar like that, I didn't notice and it's amazing you did!
@@mainlineto5988 Yep, and thanks!
I am somewhat of a guitar nerd.
I’ve loved this band for such a long time!!! So glad to see them on here. Amber Bain you are so amazing and inspirational 🫶🏼 See you guys on tour sometime
I saw them perform in Bristol late last year, unbelievably good - Amber was incredible live. Wonderful seeing them here, great work TinyDesk 🙌 x

One of my favorite artists and sunshine baby is an incredible song that's been at the top of my rotation since I heard it
been such a fan of Amber for years. one of the kindest and most humble artists i’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing in person!
this album has been on repeat for me these past few weeks. they keep coming out with music that resonates with me so deeply. thank you for this!
So great. Tiny desk always picks such great artists
Seen some crazy comments about the lack of Japanese people in this video or about the band name being problematic. Like if you think that fair enough you do you but I'd just like to point out (and I'm sure I'll get some hate for this) but Arctic Monkeys aren't actually from the arctic circle. Funnily enough The 1975 were born in the 80s, The Killers aren't murders and Franz Ferdinand didn't start WW1 upon the release of their first album. The Beatles were neither insects or Beat-less and it may surprise you to learn that Lil Yatchy is in fact not a boat.
Hhhhahaahhaahha, you so funny, you are so right, I think people are just dumb
Don't think too hard about "The Artist Formally Known as Prince". It could rip open a hole in the space time continuum.
Haha true
One of my favs! Definition of beauty and chill! 👏🏼 Thanks NPR
Love discovering new artists here💌🫂
This is great. Super happy for her to get the recognition. I do think Amber's albums have an energy that's hard to replicate in an acoustic set. They have an awesome production quality, auto-tuning, synth, etc. So if you think this is decent, go listen to the albums!!!
Agreed, studio versions are much, much better
Adore The Japanese House. Thank you so much for this. I’ve listened to this album more then any other since it dropped. Love to everyone of you!
Ive listened each day this has been out while I sip my morning tea/coffee, I find myself very drawn to lyrics, the complete amalgamation of the bands instruments, the voices, the tones, the light drumming. Thank you guys for getting together, finding each other, and working on being this blast of soul. Its very inspirational, and comforting. Peace be with you all!

Seein Amber smilin again has made my day 💜
I've seen her live 3 times. Always puts on such a fun show. So glad she was able to finally to a Tiny Desk 💙
Love them so much, just wanted Amber’s voice to be a little bit louder. Her voice is AMAZING to me. I listen to them so much when I go out running, which may seem weird. But it puts me in the mood I like most of all.
So much good music came out in 2023 but ITEIAD was my AOTY. Such an amazing album, thank you Amber and team!
I’ve been waiting for this one! Love that they opened with my favourite song. ❤
Sweet, a new artist to go on my Spotify rotation. Keep up the good work, TinyDesk!
I encourage you to check out their song 'Dionne' with Bon Iver. It's incredible.
@@lukejonesmeone of my favourites!!!
I just love Amber's voice and everything the Japanese house has made in these years!!!
I love the growth the band has, I just love everything abt this

I literally find out about them today after seeing the Coachella lineup & now I see this on my homepage😭
I discovered them on Spotify weeks ago and loved them even more live. Glad they did a tiny desk
I have waited for years for this! Thank you so much amber and co ❤
Just found out about them last year while finding new songs for my playlist. Wonderful music
Ambers music has been the soundtrack to my life, for almost ten years now, every track, I love it all, her song writing is beautiful, her productions are beautiful, so pleased to see her get the recognition she deserves!
I saw them on this recent tour, and it was amazing. Their voice is as good as the recordings, and their on-stage presence was just so fun. I especially enjoyed their interactions with the crowd and their little head tilts while playing.
Same! Amber has a way of making the most amazing melodies and I was caught off guard when it was live!
Yes!!! I discovered The Japanese House a few years ago, they are so good! Amber is amazing!! Thanks NPR!
Amber come across as so humble and you can tell they have such a strong bond with the other musicians. Love this!!
Loved her music for years. So beautiful.
Would have loved one of the older pop-ier songs with more of Amber’s distinctive guitar playing, but definitely not complaining!
Really enjoyed the “Saw You In A Dream” EP, excited to check out their new music 🖤
This is great, they all compliment each other very well!
I can't stop listening to her! thanks for the tiny desk
❤❤❤ Extra 👌👌👌, merci pour la découverte...Et encore bravo 👏👏👏👏 pour les tiny concerts 🎉🎉🎉..
Well deserved Tiny Desk! Been following her forever ❤
Never heard of this band before but had to stop working and watch this fully
1st time hear about them. We need more bands like these where You can clearly hear each instrument not just noise of all them together. I like the fact that members switch instruments and not only tunnel visioned on one. There's clearly great chemistry in band, especially girls are very close together. I could bet my money before checking that at least 2 of them are sister but nope. Defo will see them life once...
Thank you for you incredible performance!I love it.
Outstanding! 🤸🏾♂️🎶🫶🏻🌞🖖🏼✌🏼
Listening from Rwanda 🇷🇼🇷🇼with love❤️ ❤

Absolutely incredible! Saw Amber in November and it was probably one of my favorite shows I've ever been to. Couldn't help but ball when she played Joni Jones haha. Love her to pieces! Great job guys :)
Just saw her a few months ago. Phenomenal. I’ve been obsessed with her for years
❤ Refreshing! Thanks Tiny Desk!
Looking forward to seeing them in Birmingham this year!
Been listening to them for about a year. This band is insanely talented. Thank you for this. Hopefully I get to see them live soon.
THEY STARTED WITH MY FAVORITE SONG! YESSS!!!
So surprised to see this!! Sunshine Baby was probably my favorite song of 2023.
I've been a fan of Amber for so long. I remember seeing her for the first time in 2016 when the Japanese House opened for the 1975 and I was so excited to see that she's getting a moment to shine on Tiny Desk. So far of how far the Japanese House has come.
THEY PLAYED ALL MY FAVORITE SONGS THANK YOU AMBER
Greeting from japan. i love your calm sounds, associated with the shore of rural areas like nagasaki
Y'all had me at that first saxophone note.
I wanna hug them. Each one of them. Im having major fomo happening right now because of some concert later tonight that i cant go to. This is just what I needed.
This is why they're my favourite band
Their sound is so sporting, i like them!
i absolutely love japanese house. lilo and i saw you in a dream absolutely changed my life!
Beautiful set! Her voice is so soothing
I’ve tried to see Japanese House twice - and both times the concert was cancelled. This is a good conciliation ❤
Dang, were you at the place that had bad ventilation?
I can just imagine how amazing they’d be at Coachella this year. They’re so good
Wow! This is so inspiring! 🎶💜
FINALLY OH MY GOD! I've been waiting for this since 2018
Finally!! thank you tiny desk
i keep coming back to this concert
I am japanese ,glad to meet these songs!
In the calmest sense I’m so happy to finally see this ❤
Thank you NPR for introducing me to another style of music I would probably never hear on my own..❤❤
my favorite album in 2023! literally had it on everyday upon release
My favourite band omg this is so good.
Watching this was a morning well spent
Great stuff..first heard her on Soma FM,now I am hooked
ITEIAD is the one album that will always have a special place in my heart, no matter where I will be or how old I will be. Same goes for her music in general. If it didn‘t exist, there would be an emptiness inside of me and I would be looking for something to fill it with, not even sure what I am searching for. ‘In the end it always does‘ is a promise and it is soothing in so many ways. Thank you Amber for your music 💙
OMG finally!!!! Love you Amber
woawhh i discover a new talented song writer and a beautiful song, save it on my list ~ thank you so much NPR Music..
I had no idea about this. My 3rd most listened to band on Spotify last year and youtube has taken a month to suggest it?!
I love The Japanese House!!
Discovered from Coachella and looking for more 👍
