I wear a tie almost daily. There are 3 different knots I use. By far, my favorite is the Shelby knot. Perfect knot every time. I've used over 20 years.
I recently stumbled upon this video and can only recommend it for tall people. I am a bit over 2 meters and this is the only knot which looks good and where the small part of the tie stays long enough to fit into the little holder. Wish I had already found this gem 10 years ago. Big thumbs up!
Ive been wearing ties for 103 years.. ok, more like 35 years.. youstart with the little. Ive always started with the big. And, you are correct in saying the dimple has to be addressed if you want it. And, i do. You just saved me a lot of frustrating AM's.
Thanks! Was using full Windsor because it was symmetrical. But will switch to this one as it is not as big and as you say, "The dimple is automatic". Notice this was made 8 years ago. Hope this post finds you in good health.
Thanks, Don. I've tied the Shelby Knot since about 1989. It's the only knot I ever use. But just like we see at the 1:40 mark, on about 80% of my first tries, the little end's length is too long, and requires additional attempts to get both lengths right. Because there is so little tie length being used in the knot itself, I typically have to get the ends nearly aligned. But it's all worth it, because it is a great looking knot, and one that is perfectly symmetrical without being huge.
This is the knot my father taught me growing up. I never knew what it was called until now. Not sure how this showed up in my YT feed, but I'm glad it did!
Great little video from Don Shelby, the man behind the knot, and a terrific record for the archives of cravatology. At least this piece of tie history won't be relegated to theory or legend.
forget mr windsor say hello to mr shelby ! its been years since i had to get knotted on a daily basis . my tie knotting skills had long left the memory bank . took awhile to get the 2 lengths aligned . i can now attend my sons wedding in style . thank you Mr Shelby
I was wearing full Windsor half Windsors, but since I’ve learned about the Shelby knot, it had become my favorite knot to wear.. thanks for the video and the information.
I’ve watched about 9 tie videos this morning and this is the first one I was able to follow along with and land in on the other side with a completed knot Thank you so much for posting this. It will be the only tie video I use from here on
"Why, thank you my good siŕ. I must say that just by you showing me how to tie this "Shelby knot" via video has left me feeling more "exquisite" and very "prestigious".. just as your knot with the dimple, and each and every one of us man knows the last of "dimples" aah yes .... "Good day" 👍 👌 🤌🤌👋
@@kd9axo This is actually the same knot as Pratt. Pratt has the following steps: Lo-Ci-Lo-Ri-Co-T. And Mr. Don Shelby showed the same steps. He simply said that at first he moves the small end over the large end, but after this movement, he began to move the large end from the Lo step. And he made all the steps of the Pratt knot any way. The only difference is that he turned the narrow end inward when he finished tying the knot. You can do the same with the Pratt knot if you need that detail. But all the basic steps are the same.
I love this knot. My famous tailor, Herbert Martin, showed it to me in the nineties. When a full windsor is too thick, because of the material of the tie, the shelby is a "must".
Over the years I've seen so many videos and websites about tying a tie. This was so quick and easy and looks way better than any other time I've tied a tie in almost 60 years. THANK YOU
Perfect! Needed a knot for a shorter tie (that wouldn't have much of the little side left on the back with a double windsor...) and the dimple is the cherry on top! Classy knot, my gal loved it!
I knew men years ago, that taught me that knot, all WW2 Veterans. They called it the "New York Go To Hell Knot". Still my favorite knot, your way is much, easier.
This is one of the two knots I only ever use. The second version is even simpler. Start the same, then little over big, big across the front, big up towards the neck and then down through the loop. This simpler version works for chunkier ties.
Mr. Shelby Sir, it seems the back or "little" is longer than the front. Is this true? I do my Shelby knot higher near the collar button without a dimple personally, but back or "little" is not longer than the front. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

Thank you! As a big dude who likes a symmetrical tie knot this uses so much less length than the half Windsor I often used.
Im 24 and tied a tie maybe only 3 times before. I got it stunningly perfect on the first try! This method is fantastic! Thank you
The Pratt/Shelby knot and the four in hand are the only two I use (mood dependent)

This was the easiest video I’ve ever seen. Thank you sir!
Now I’m off to bury my father, and I look damn good doing it!

I did the same thing and nothing worked until I watched this video, tied it on the first try. This video just made since vs the other ones .
Been watching videos for hours screwing up every knot I've tried. Do this one, one time and nailed it.
You sir have completely changed my life for the better!
Wow. Is that your real name or u kept because u like Hajime Saito from rurouni kenshin??

Don Shelby is a legend. This was so easy, got it on my first try after 20 minutes of double windsor videos confusing me. Thank you!
Ι tried many knots, I couldn't manage to make a dimple. Now I did it!!!!
My dad was always looking for ways to tie a tie. I think he found this one late in life & never went back. Classy & easy looks great!
Protect this Man.
This is the easiest how to video I’ve ever seen. Definitely my new favorite knot. Thank Mr. Shelby!
Very clear explanation, unlike most knot tying videos which are totally confusing!
I remember Don Shelby on WCCO-TV. I still have the newspaper article describing the Shelby knot.
same with pratt knot....?
@@liewkinhean Watch the video again. The Shelby is slightly different.

Thank you so much I had 5 min to tie my tie. Your video came in clutch big time thanks 🙏
Only instructional video that actually helped me lmao I’m 24 and I can finally tie my own tie
Even though it is an old video from 2013 I would like to say Thank You so much for the help / step by step on how to "tie" a tie. 🙂
Thank You! 😊👔
That was not instruction--that was sleight-of-hand.
It was... slight instruction! Because of how surprisingly simple it is.
wow, best tie tutorial I've ever seen! Thank you, sir
The best tutorial on the RUclips.
Thank you very much sir.
The only knot I ever use anymore. Not only does it look better, but it's the easiest way to do it too.

I call it the Hitman knot. It's used by Mr 47 in the original Hitman games.
Most helpful tie video on RUclips
Thanks so much, that was a lot easier than other videos
Sir you are a gentleman and a scholar.
Excellent video and very easy to do!!! Thank you sir.
Thanks Don. I wish you hadn't disappeared from. YT.
When I learned this in the mid 70's it was called a square knot.
Who taught you the shelby not?
-I learned it from the Don
This video was such a good help
A friend of mine from Detroit taught me to tie this knot, but he called it a “pimp knot.” It’s nice to have a different name for it.
Sorry but that name is too good 👍🏽
