What I Eat In a Week - Post-Ileostomy Reversal | 7-Day Food Diary

- Why should you care about what I eat? Part of my treatment for Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer was having 12 inches of my colon/rectum removed and having a temporary ileostomy. That ileostomy was reversed after 7 months, and it’s been a battle ever since to find a routine that keeps my bowels somewhat normal and from ruining my life. Follow me for a week to see what I eat and do to keep from spending half my life on the toilet.

Have an ileostomy for bowel obstruction and diverticulitis. Getting my reversal done this month. This video is very helpful about planning my post surgery diet. Thanks Jalena! ❤
Hi Jenena... Thanks for your videos. These have really helped me out in navigating my cancer journey.
Thank you for your video and sharing with us. I as well was diagnosed with phase 3 rectal cancer. My cancer was exceptionally low in the rectum area….. doctors were not sure if they could save the mussel and probably would have a bag for the rest of my life. Happy to say they did a reversal on me. I must say however I have been going three hell trying to have bowel movements and being able to control them….
I struggle everyday hoping I can find the right solution soon. It’s been about a 11/2 years since reversal but than developed a hernia the size of a grapefruit. That is now removed after 2 more surgeries and mesh. In general I am a wreck but trying really hard to get ahead of it all. Thanks again for sharing . It gives people like me hope for the future. Take care .
I’m so glad you’re doing good and thank you for the videos because they really do help me. I was just diagnosed with gastric cancer I had Crohn’s for mini mini years and all of a sudden I got cancer cells. I have auto immune disorders that prevent me from eating any wheat, I have celiac and find it very difficult. They give me Zofran to help me with a nauseous. It really much a shock. Your videos are helping me understand things much better. God bless you. Bless your family and keep your videos up. It really does help. We love you.❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Another fantastic, educational, entertaining and inspirational video. With upcoming surgery, I can honestly go in, feeling 100% confident now. Thank you so so much , Jelena. God bless you with good health and a very very long and happy life. A real-life heroine in my eyes.
Aw, thank you so much for these sweet words! 💙💙💙 I'm so thankful for such wonderful viewers like you.
Thank you - I so appreciate this video! More people need to be sharing how to eat after re-section. Especially if you are vegan or vegetarian! As Jelena said everyones recovery is different. What works for one might not work for another.
FYI - my brother (69 yrs old- not vegetarian) with Chrons has had a couple of stomas over the years. The first reversal about 15 years ago went pretty well, and he was eating pretty normal after around a month. But for this one his ileostomy was reversed Oct 13th, after almost a year. I should mention he is also on nightly TPN. It has been rough for him, and he had 2 blockages shortly after his procedure. So now diagnosed with motility issues - so no more Imodium or anit- diarrheals for him. Now taking 1 tblsp Milk of Magnesia a day (no psyllium yet). Was put on liquid diet + protein shakes for 2 weeks, then semi liquid for 2 weeks - meaning we could add cream of wheat/rice , creamed soups, yogurt, sherbet, pudding with protein powder mixed in, etc, in addition to std liquid diet. We are still on a low residue diet, and trying 1 new item at lunch or dinner to see how his gut reacts. Last week we added (starting a couple bites at a time then waiting) scrambled eggs, avocado, applesauce, saltines, white bread, rice, poached fish, home made chicken meatballs, BUTTER COOKIES (his fav- is craving crunch). Most of these additions resulted in some additional gas, a little discomfort the first try- but fine the 2nd time. It may be coincidental but what he has had significant cramping with has been: poached chicken, a small slice of cheese, meatloaf, potato chips( probably the last time he will sneak something). We will try again those again in a couple of weeks. Progress is being made ( he has put on 10 lbs) - just slow. At least no more trips to the hospital!
Good luck to you all on this exploration - be open to trying something new - you can do it!
This video gives me hope for normalcy. About to have my ileostomy reversed. I’m coming from formerly pooping 12-16x a day, to now emptying my ostomy bag 8 times a day. If I can get anywhere near only pooping a few times a day I would be so grateful. I been so limited on my diet options, seeing you eat raw vegetables is great.
The first few weeks will be rough, but hopefully you’ll be going fewer times than before you got your ileostomy.

This is the first time I viewed one of your videos. Lots of helpful tips. Thank you very much! Bless you on your journey.
Thank you for clicking on my video! So happy to hear that you picked up some good tips. Hope they help you out 💙
My second
Thank you So Much for posting! I have had a similar experience since Jan 2020, and Ileostomy Reversal just 6 weeks ago has been most difficult. Very little advice from Medical Team - just Regular Diet. Thank you again!
You’re welcome 💙
I'm having my ileostomy reversed Monday and not at all sure what I'll be able to eat and what I should stay away from. I think I'll. stock up on marshmallows and pastas.
So glad you did these videos between them and peoples comments it’s been a huge help !!
Awesome! Glad you like them 🙂
My reversal is Monday! Thank you for sharing!

Survivor Jelena thanks so much!
I hope you have a speedy recovery.
How did it go?
@@dougn2350 its went well after 3 months of recovery. I'm back at work thank God. I feel pretty good. It was a long road to get here. I started this journey back in December of 2018 .but with the help of God and prayers I'm very thankful. How you been doing
Thank you for this video. I'm just starting getting my ileostomy reversal journey and this really helped ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Jelena! Thanks a lot for sharing.. My mom underwent the reversal surgery in December 2020.. she still hasn't been able to control her bowels.. and has bad days mostly.. but when she takes imodium it's all good.. her doc told her to take imodium only very rarely.. Thanks for sharing your diet.. we'll try it..
I hope it helps. The psyllium husk really helped with giving more bulk to my stools so it was easier to control them so I could get to the toilet.
I'm getting ileostomy reversal surgery 5/25/22! Thank u for sharing
I hope your surgery went well and you're back home recovering 💙
Loperamide is really well tolerated as a medicine, thanks for sharing your experiences. I hope your are still doing very well. :)
I have great news for myself after Radiation and Chemotherapy,, a month later I got another colonoscopy and re biopsy and it came back Benign.. NO CANCER..... well my pain in rectum still was happening...Anyways thur a church/preacher I was healed,, and that moment the pain left me,,, its been 2 weeks.. but I still have its like my bowel are rolling and rumbling,,,, I have a bottle of probiotic maybe I should take them and see.... I also do smoothies...
What stage were you? And did you have to do surgery? Im glad you are cancer free now🎉
Thanks for your page... From Day 1 it has helped me so much,, I knew what to expect, thur my chemo pills thur Radiation,, and like this one.... Thanks again..
You’re welcome
If you don’t mind me asking. How many inches of your colon do you have left? I’m getting my ileostomy reversed and only have 4 inches of my sigmoid colon. My fear is pooping all day. I eat quite a lot, but to have begun to have skin irritation with the adhesive of the stoma flang. Thank you for being so transparent w ur experience ❤
How long take your recovery surgery? Back work?
A quick follow-up, how do you know how much psylium husk to take?
This is EXCELLENT. Thank you.
jalena i am now reversed and doiin well post op 3 weeks, bms are good but aweful stinky gas, i was told to try devrom.
This was so helpful thank you, will definitely be adding psyllium husk to my diet. I found that being on loperimide gave me hairloss
Wow, that's interesting about the hairloss! I hope the psyllium husk works out better for you.
I got recommended a low residue (low fiber) diet post reversal surgery.
What was your hospital stay like after your reversal? How long after surgery should I be eating high fiber? I have anxiety about eating after the reversal!! How long did it take for your bathroom trips to only be about 3-4 a day? A lot of incontinence? It looks like your meals are basically whatever you want to eat, now. Thank you for adding in the other things you take and when you take them!
Thank you for all the questions!! I think I was only in the hospital for 2 days, maybe 3. My surgeon told me to resume my normal diet as soon as I left the hospital. It took 2.5 to 3 weeks for me to figure out how to slow things down to a half dozen or fewer bathroom trips a day. Once my stool wasn’t liquid anymore the incontinence slowed a lot. I still wore pads to catch any leakage for a few weeks. Hope this helps you some!
Angela Bodkin if you want to be well don’t eat what she eat
My surgeon told me to eat whatever when I got home, but everyone I’ve talked to said they were told to do a low-residue diet for at least a few weeks. I was miserable eating anything, so I changed to a low-residue diet and that calmed things down some. It isn’t a diet you can do long term though.
Hope it has gone well for you!

Bile acid malabsorption is the bid problem when the ostomy has been insulted I'm 8 years down the road now ate what I wanted after surgery your right they say that ,I had it all wrong big time now on a bile binder and low fat diet .
I had diverticulitis and fistula surgery back in 22 july 19. I have ilsecomy bag and gallbladder tube. This definitely been an lifestyles changer. I hope to have the reversal and gallbladder bladder surgery soon. I did a lot research online and RUclips videos. I am glad you are doing better. May God bless you.😊
Oh my goodness, you’ve been through the ringer! You sound like you’re ready for the next round of surgeries. I hope you can have them soon and that they go complication free.
@@SurvivorJelena thanks I forgot to tell you this will be my three surgery coming up. My second surgery I was so weak from the first one I stop breathing. The Lord brought me back me. After all that I became septic from urine being dumped in my blood stream. So I been through a few things with all this stuff but I'm hanging in there. I'm glad I found you here. You been very helpful and thank you 😊
Happy to hear you’re still hanging in there! I’m glad my videos have helped you. That’s exactly why I’m doing them.
@@SurvivorJelena keep up the good work. It's a wonderful thing you are sharing your journey.
Can I ask about the psyilum husk? Is there a reason you do not take the capsules? I am taking one a day because I need to bulk up my stool. It is helping, but I was wondering also about limiting liquid with it. Does is just help to bulk stool more? I have some capsules, and I am doing one a day right now, but I don't know if I should maybe do two or try one and limit the water. Thank you! Your videos are such a big help. :)
Hope to have reversal surg soon.
What do you recommend eating right after surg and did the Dr. recommend imodium or did you take it on your own.
Check with your doctor to see if they recommend a certain diet. My surgeon recommended both the Metamucil and Imodium 2.5 weeks after my surgery at my follow up appointment.
I’ll try this
On May 19,2022, I had my ovarian cysts removed through Da Vinci surgery but they burned my butt so I woke up with a temporary colostomy. Fast forward to last wednesday July 13, my colostomy was reversed. It’s been a week but my stomach still hurts when I eat food. They stay in the “colostomy” area as if stoma is still there and i feel a kicking bumping sensation of them wanting to go out. Im taking ibuprofen for pain and gabapentin. It sucks 😩 my tummy hurts right now i feel like i wanna poop but there’s nothing to poop so idk
Great video very informative
Thank you!
Thanks for this video. Do you have any videos of what you ate while you had your ileostomy sometime after you had been healed from the surgery?
I don’t, but I’ll keep that in mind for a future video. Thanks for watching 💙
Hi, I was wondering why you don't eat more vegetables. I love broccoli, brussel sprouts.....but they don't seem to love me right now. I am 5 months out from my ileostomy take down. Curious--thanks!
Yeah, veggies don’t agree with me well post-ileostomy reversal. My GI doc said to lay off the cruciferous veggies (like broccoli, cauliflower, etc) to see if that helps alleviate some of my gas.
Good evening, I very much appreciate your videos. I too was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. And I am currently 1 year post reversal. My question is, Are you still taking Imodium and Metamucil daily? Has your dosage changed? Thank you for your time!
I just posted an updated video on what my current routine is here: ruclips.net/video/0StMM7_wSDw/видео.html. I still take the Metamucil daily, but I only take Imodium as needed, which is maybe once a week.
Your videos have been so helpful! I had LAR surgery March 22,ileostomy reversal June 17, I am post 2 weeks. Don’t know how I would function with out Imodium 2x a day. How long were you in the Imodium?
I took it daily for over 3 years.
Never trust the doctor when it comes to the bathroom issue lol 😂
excellent video thanks
Hi Jelena, hope your doing well. 3 weeks ago i was done my ileostomy reversal. My only concern is i keep on going to the toilet, how long youve been experience this? After your reversal how long you control you bowel? Thank you Jelena. God Bless
Thank you for your videos it helps us other ostomates learn a little more I know you have yours reversed I wish mine could be but they told me I’m stuck with mine forever sadly , but my question is when I had my colostomy done a year and two months ago I was only 113lbs I loved myself at that weight I was healthy for the most part just my intestines didn’t want to work without major interventions so in Aug this year I had to have an end Ileostomy done also with parastomal hernia repair and they closed my colostomy up by
It sadly I gained about 40/50 lbs of unwanted weight because my body was so out of wake I’d really like to know what to do to get that weight off I can’t get right back into full exercises because the stomach pain everything still burns from the hernia surgery and mesh they put in ,I’ve been watching everything I eat and drink I’m just lost don’t know what to do , drs just say try this or that or just eat normal but that’s what is getting me this problem cuz I know I can’t just eat anything , help anyone
Can you get referred to do some physical therapy to help strengthen your body post-surgery? Then you can safely do some exercises to at least get moving some more.
Thank you for this video and God bless you!
God Bless You 🙏
Thanks!
Hi Jelena, a question pops up when I saw the hormone replacement therapy that you took, did they improve your hot flashes ? And for how long you took them ?
Yes, they did. I don’t have any hot flashes now, and I’m currently still taking them.
Thank you, it's been seven weeks since the reversal. I'm starving, but I still go to the bathroom 20 or more times. Did you recommend some cervical excirses? I don't control in my bowls.
Oh my, that sounds miserable 😢 Have you tried a low-residue diet to slow things down a little? I didn’t do any pelvic floor therapy so I can’t recommend any exercises.
@@SurvivorJelena thank you for reply
After removing my sigmoid none of my doctors/surgeons recommend any special diet. They all said eat normal but healthy.
I got special diet instructions when I got my ileostomy, but when it was reversed the surgeon said the same thing...eat normal and healthy.
@@SurvivorJelena ... I recently underwent a colostomy reversal but when I woke up I had an ileostomy in its place. The surgeon said he wanted another test to make sure the reconnection (colon to rectum) had a good seal and no constriction. Then I'll get the ileostomy takedown. So 3 surgeries before its all done. I had acute diverticulitis in the sigmoid. 6 inches removed. Pretty mild as that type of thing goes. Living with the bags has been the worst part, aside from the pain after my first two surgeries.
@@dougn2350 oh my, what a surprise to wake up to! How long will they wait before testing the newly reconnected site?
@@dougn2350 I hope you get a successful reversal ♥️
@@SurvivorJelena ... I'm going in Sept 22 for the contrasting gastrophain enema and xray.
After that it's up to the surgeon when I get the final takedown.
Love your videos, so informative! ❤️ how many times do you take loperamide and how long before or after eating do you take it?
Georgina Gál I take 1 tablet in the morning, 2 hours after I take the psyllium husk, then I take 1 more tablet right after dinner. Thanks for your kind words 😀
Survivor Jelena thanks! Did you take more in the beginning after surgery or was this the loperamide regimen you started right away?
This wasn’t the routine I started out with. I would take 1 a day, then take more throughout the day if I had bad diarrhea.
Survivor Jelena thanks!
Hai, I am taking Cremadiet ( psyllium husk) daily and so helpful. is this good in the morning or night ( before bed)?
I will take it in the morning.
Thank u , I have stage 3 , colon cancer , I can't eat a lot of those things .
Well, you’re still going through treatment, right? This is a sample of what I eat 2 years after I finished treatment and had my ileostomy reversed. Give it time and hopefully you’ll get there.
Just had my ilinostomy reversal. And nope. Surgeon just said imodium, bananas (I'm diabetic sooooo) and high fiber.
Hai Jelena, Are you using lopermaid tablets still for control the bowl movements
Lately only every now and then. They’ve been decently under control by just taking Metamucil in the morning daily.
@@SurvivorJelena ok nice, my friend is taking Looz syrup early morning daily, using this syrup good?he underwent ileostmy closure recently
I don’t think we have that here in the US, so I don’t have any experience with it, but if it’s working for your friend then they should keep on using it.
I suffer from severe Crohn's disease. I had to have a portion of my intestines removed and ended up with an ileostomy for over 3 years. Crohn's suffers cannot ingest extra fiber as it aggravates the condition, any non-fiber tips for thickening the stool? Loperamide is hard on me, I tried octreotide for awhile but it hasn't been available since covid.
Are things like white pasta, white rice, white bread, bananas, marshmallows, and applesauce foods that would be doable?
Woah, I think you should post some recepies, they look so tasty 😋
Of course! Anything in particular that caught your eye?
Survivor Jelena thank you 😊 the Indian recepies and the banana bread I’d say, they looked so yummy!

Do you use psyllium husk or powder?
For this video I was using actual psyllium husk, but now I use the powder. I get basically the same results from each.
I had my reversal Nov 3rd 2021. Having issues with gas, bloating and Inconsistent bowel movements. Which probiotic are you using?
I was using an over the counter probiotic sold at Costco.
Jelena, what brand of probiotics do you take?
I get them from Costco. You have to ask for them at the pharmacy because they have them in a fridge in the back.
My husband didn’t like my answer 😜, so here’s more. They’re made by Brookfield Pharmaceuticals, but there isn’t really a brand name on them. I just ask for the refrigerated probiotics at the counter and they know what to give me.
Good choices with the diet 😁 I would give up grains and sugars
I'm working on minimizing my sugar intake now that the holidays are over. I can't give up grains because I'm a vegetarian so that would leave me with very few options of food to eat. I don't notice any bad side effects from eating grains.
@@SurvivorJelena sounds great 👍👍 try einkorn flour 😀😀😀
zee k good choice with the diet are you nuts that’s why she’s having such a hard time her diet is horrible if you think it’s right and you’re getting reconnected you’re in for trouble.

Mam I am from India my father has gone through the closure after 16 Months can he have isabgol regularly
It should be fine, but he can check with his doctor if he’s concerned.
Hai Jelena, Nice video and helpful, are you following same diet which you showed in this video and what is the frequency now a days. still using lopermaid tablets?
I pretty much follow the same diet, but I only use the loperamide tablets occasionally. The Metamucil I take daily in the morning most of the time is enough for making days manageable, but not perfect.
@@SurvivorJelena Thank you so much dear Jelena for your valuable suggestions to me.

When you go in to see your doctor next you should ask them about this. It could be something like a hemorrhoid.

Wow I’m getting reconnected soon, 4 1/2 months with the bag, but I’m very educated in nutrition and I see the way you eat why are you torturing yourself with all the wrong foods I feel better already with my reconnection I am so strict with what I do. I’ve had the bag with no issues at all because of my strict diet. Good luck
Charles Gosselin what do you mean all the wrong foods? What do you eat?
Well first of all dairy products and they’re not lactose free it’s so good, all those beans chilli not good for the colon and intestines to begin with especially when you have a problem, I eat lots of protein high juice lots of produce spinach parsley carrots ginger cucumber kale, and I put high potency protein in every juice glass, isolated protein no lactose, and I love coffee also but coffee is terrible for us, activate your intestines much too much, are you liver high quality meats my body responds well, I never had a problem with most people of hydration with the ostomy never a blockage, but then again start a training at 12 years old gymnastics club taekwondo boxing bodybuilding very knowledgable in nutrition it’s incredible what people don’t know that it is not good for them, Plus I even go further I have a book which is called eat for your blood type certain foods are not good for certain blood types can’t even be extremely bad, and the book is very accurate just one example I always hated anchovies and in the book it said for my blood type anchovies are toxic.
Whats the name of the book plz?
Simple ::eat for your blood type:: there are four blood types
Eat 4 your blood Type.
