Two things I learned from this video: What Hannah can eat with a stoma, and British people are VERY concerned about the proper labeling of their cheese toasties.

Sheryl Z Oh we are, because a toastie, cheese on toast and the American grilled cheese are all different. Its the same with biscuits: In America, everything biscuity is a cookie, but here, biscuits and cookies are very different, and then shortbread is different again... yes we are particular.

I have an ACE stoma and have the opposite problem to you- if I have too many carbs and too little veg in a week, or don’t have one coffee a day, I can’t get my catheter into the stoma because the stool is too hard or has build up too much.

It was difficult after surgery because you don’t know what’s going on or what your new normal will be and your sense of humor and positivity were invaluable. As to pooing habits, I can totally relate. Cilantro comes out the same way it goes in. Also tacos have a strange smell, like good smelling food in your poo. It sends such strange messages to my brain of repulsion and “oh That smells like something good to eat.” Thanks for your bravery.

I'm a nursing assistant in elderly care, so I see stomas, probably a fair bit more than the average person, but still not that often that we really have training in it or anything (the first time I saw one, luckily, the patient was able to show me what to do and how to help her empty it, but there's still a lot I don't know, but its been really interesting, watching your videos and hearing your experiences both on a general and professional level... because even with having to be hands on at time, you don't get that much information when doing general medical care in a "non medically qualified" role.
Your videos help me to take care of my patients better. Thank you.

This is so important! When my grandad had a stoma, we couldn't find a single nurse in Buenos Aires who knew at least something about stomas or how to properly change the bag... we went through a lot, but when we found someone who actually knew what she was doing, we thought she was an angel. We loved her. With all the problems we had daily (he had a stoma done at age 85 because of colon cancer... now he's doing amazing with no stoma), it was nice having someone we could rely on. So anyway, on behalf of your patients (and their families) thank you for caring about this! You make a huge difference on people's lives :)

I get annoyed when people tell me I should instead try a 'slow carb' diet, I've got type one diabetes (adult diagnosis) and try and eat low carb. I do eat carbs but I try and make them worth it for when I'm having them. I also get annoyed when people tell me I need to do strict keto, which I would literally die from hypoglycemia the first time I'd workout.

Also, I should add that I have issues with salt/electrolytes and staying hydrated, I get the science in sport 'hydro tablets' and find that helps me a lot. But I have to pay attention to my carbs, so it's a lot easier than eating crisps and then controlling my blood sugar

Megan. Sounds like you have a varied and rich diet. So keep up the good work.
Although I don't have a stoma as yet, my Crohn's is active in my upper illeum with strictures. So I have a low residue diet fairly similar to Hannah's to avoid blockages with the strictures.
As stuff still goes all the way down, shellfish, hydration and sweetcorn are not a problem.
But I am sick as a parrot if I eat food with Indian Spices. Even a single samosa can lay me low for a week. 😭

Thanks so much Sarah, I'm so glad she's helped you too! I hope you're adjusting and doing well 😊
I have ups and downs, usually depending on anxiety levels, but having representation and normalisation of these things helps so much to show we're not alone and that we can move forward and live with our illnesses etc. not wait to be "better" or "normal" - we ARE normal and can live our best lives right now! 💚
Terri I absolutely agree! I don't have many friends who can relate or tolerate lol but I normalise talking about bodily functions when I can! I'm tired of being ashamed of my body! It takes a lot of work to go against everything society tells us but it's so freeing to keep making that effort ✊ I've had to use humour a lot to get through living with chronic illness since childhood and often my friends would be grossed out by crude humour etc. but so long as jokes weren't at the expense of fat/disabled etc people (which they too often are) I always secretly appreciated comedy that took the power away from taboo topics.

Hi Hannah! I have ulcerative colitis and I'm struggling a lot with cheese and diet coke, every time I eat it my stomach hurts so much and I poop like crazy, any advice? are there any foods that you don't tolerate anymore? I used to be able to eat both but since my stay in the hospital last year it seems like I'm bloated all the freaking time and that most of the things hurt my bowel. Thanks for showing a realistic what I eat in a day, your energy is so contagious and I love your sense of humor surrounding the disease, seriously, it's so refreshing! love from Spain.

Love how you’re bringing awareness of your condition and others to light! You’re amazing! My husband has been chronically ill now for 5 years and the doctors can’t figure out what’s wrong, so he’s been on a lot of diets. They suspected ulcerative colitis for a while but that was ruled out. We did find out he had a gluten allergy so he did get better for a couple months after getting off gluten, but then got sick again. Now we have a new lead and are preparing him for a new diet that’s supposed to help reduce the histamine levels in his body and it’s crazy! No wheat, dairy, or soy (which we already don’t do). No nuts, dried fruits, shellfish, eggs, chocolate (this one made him cry ;)), certain berries, mushrooms, pepper, no dried foods in general (including teas and herbs), and everything has to be made fresh (so no leftovers or sausages). So he can eat fresh veggies, fruits, and meats. Hopefully this works to reduce his symptoms until they figure out what’s wrong.

The issue with fiber post op is that until things settle into place, you're prone to intestinal blockages. Fresh celery stalks still give me problems (chopped or diced celery is fine). Seedless Rye or Pumpernickel bread doesn't case problems (caraway seeds can be problematic). Nuts (including peanuts) in moderation haven't caused me problems in years. Sodas straight from the bottle/can/machine can cause gas due to the carbonation. I find that ice cubes cuts the fizz to tolerable levels.
What you can tolerate will change over time. I still don't do corn. I do eat shrimp, crab meat, salmon, gefilte fish with almost no problem (tuna gives me indigestion). Be careful with timed release medicine. They will go through you without being absorbed. I do mini sweet peppers so I see small undigested pieces. Dyes from frosting can produce interesting colors. I do beetroot on Passover and yes you'll see a distinct color.
I've got 33 years of experience with no revision surgery and no blockages requiring a trip to the ER in almost 20 years. One thing to remember. If you're in the hospital for any extended stay, let your doctors and nurses to know what to expect with your stoma. I did that when I had Thyroid Cancer surgery in April so there wouldn't be issues in the OR along with the following week when I had to visit the ER due to a leaking drain from the surgery. Don't panic over a blockage. I've been through 3 that sent me to the ER and in every case, pain medication and a muscle relaxet resolved the issue in a couple of hours.

I love visiting with you on your video channel. I do not get real grossed out. I trained in the US Army as a combat medic so dealing with the more awful parts of real life tends to be more of a common environment for me. The last time I wrote I told you I was a US Army soldier but I did not tell you that I was a member of Medical corp. That was where I started my military career, in Medicle Corp. I told you I was blinded but I did not go into a lot of detail. When I returned to the US from my military service travels around the face of the glob I got a job in the State of Colorado as a Law Enforcement Officer In the State of Colorado Department of Corrections (Prisons) I became a prison guard. It was at this point in time that I was made a target by my fellow officers and deliberatly (on purpose) blinded by my fellow officers. Up until then I was a pretty happy go lucky and very duty oriented type of person. Being a soldier is a real ... Very Real ... life style of duty, physical exercise, and more duty. Some times for multiple days and other extended periods of time, in multiple sucession. Otherwise stated as days, or weeks, or months in a row. I have had more than one oppertunity to quite literaly fall asleept on my feet from exhaustion, the only indicator that I was asleep being the immediate confusion I feel, now that I am awake once again trying to recall what I was doing before I fell asleep, trying to pick up the peices of my work and complete the task at hand. B the element of comparison it is obvious I was, for a while there, very much out of conciousness and previously asleep. A very frightening reality in a place where people are literaly trying to kill you. In as much as I miss the excitment of that time in my life I am very relived in the fact that that part of my life is over. I used to be a soldier, but I was much more than just a soldier. I was a professional driver - in or out of combat. I drove all over north America, central America, And South America. All over Asia and all over Europe. And I am not talking just the local family sedan. I am talking huge massive in size professional peices of very heavy equipment. I drove through the jungles deserts cities and rural areas all over the face of the glob. The world is a very dangerious place. People lose their lives all over the earth for simply being in the wrong place at the right time for the oppertunity to strike against you. I would like to be able to say that my situational awareness has kept me alive. But in reality it has just been dumb luck. I have spent my whole life in harms way, subject to what ever any person who wanted to do me harm was freely open to do so. I have been snake bit and poisoned. I have been lied to cheated and robed by the Federal Level American Government I have Been Lied to cheated and robed and blinded by the State level of American Government specifically the State of Colorado. All of this tends to sound very dramatic But it is only my reality. After all I could see just fine one day and three days Later I was blind for what I supose will be the rest of my life. At this point I do not have the money but when I do I will go to a specialist type of doctor to inquire as to what may be posible in terms of regaining my sight. I used to travel all over the face of the earth. now I can not even travel around the block with out help.
Bige diference between you and me you fell subject to a Medicle condition that altered your life. In my case I supose that you could say that I fell subject to a medicle Condition as well that changed my life. In my case it was criminal stupidity on the part of those who were suposed to be the first responders defending the issues of justice, peace, and and the definders of induvidual liberties. As the old saying goes you can not cue stupid. Especialy on the part of the law Enforcement. Sorry, I am ranting. I will close now. Best wishes to you I hope life is good to you in the long run. hannah, please don't feel bad for craving the foods that are actually healthy for your specific body. your body is smart and knows what it needs and you seem to be really in tune with your needs which is a skill you can be proud of!
personally i've always felt drawn to whole grain bread, vegetables and generally foods that take a longer time to digest (so no fast food, ever). turns out i have a super fast acting metabolism and this is the food i need to stay active during the day.
our bodies do more than we give them credit for and (even thought this is a touchy subject) i don't think one diet is inherently better than other types of diets. it really does depend on the individual.

I can eat lettuce, carrots, diced celery, cabbage, onions, sweet peppers, grape/roma tomatoes and radishes raw with little to no problem. My biggest issue is seeds so I stay away from large globe tomatoes, bell peppers (although cored I can handle), cucumbers and squash. Fresh stalks of celery also can be an issue due to the strings.
On the fruit side, I can do apple slices, pineapple and most citrus raw/fresh.

Many I have talked to within the IBD community had no issues with food until they have had to be admitted to hospital for surgery or investigation.
One of my favourite meals was half an iceberg lettuce with chicken, bacon, cheese and lashing of salad cream. Then I fell Ill which I was told might be due to Crohn's disease so now I have a stoma and have to avoid most of what I use to eat.

I use was rings applied to the water for better protection for the 7 days. No skin issues of leaks.

So my diet is different and specific. With IBS i cant have foods that are very fermentable like brocoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Squash, asperagus, leek, brussel sprout, legumes and beans. With GERD Disease i cant have oignions, mushroom, acidic fruits and acidic vegetable. No High fat food, no process food, no sugar nor very salty food. With OAB acidic fruits make it worst. I have been doing low fodmap for years. But still need to find the rigth diet for me.

I've had my stoma (named Laird) for nearly 2 years and finding foods that don't aggravate things has been very tough for me (I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and other health issues, which further complicates things). Since then, it's been a lot of trial and error. I'm also vegan, and I miss raw veggies and salads, but I learned the hard way regarding fiber with numerous blockages, a hernia, and prolaspes. So, it's been tough bc I love produce and fibrous foods but can't eat them and the variety of foods I can safely handle would make most people nuts, but after 2 years, I'm finally starting to figure it out. Sure, it may be a unique way of eating, but hey, I'm missing 5 feet of organ with another organ sticking out of my abdominal muscles, so gotta do what ya gotta do!

My mum has had a stoma for 21 years now, and she misses so much food. She used to be the healthiest person, always eating Granny Smith apples, granola and loads of veggies; so naturally she was devastated when she found out she couldn't eat them anymore. And as such me and my sister never really ate super fibrous foods growing up and we became quite picky with veggies. Sometimes my mum will skin a grape just so she can eat it, or take a tiny bite of a green apple and chew it for a few minutes just so she can taste it.

I have Crohn’s diseases and I’ve been on that diet and remicade when I first started. Now I’m on a high fiber and no gluten diet and remicade. It really is dependent on the person with Crohn’s and colitis, and it’s great that you found something that works

I don’t want to say too much but as a dietitian I just want to say that people with stomas can have whole grain bread/brown rice etc. as long as they chew well and tolerate it. It’s all individual! ❤️❤️❤️

having had many, many surgeries (if anyone read this before the edit, 23 was at the age of 3, I've had many since then too) , been off my face on morphine and been on restrictive a** diets due to some of the surgeries, these lists make so much sense! there are a few things that I wouldn't eat, and them being on the list still makes sense to me!

My output turned red when I ate red velvet cake! First time it happened I also thought I was bleeding! I recently bought an electric steamer, so I steam my vegetables. They taste amazing and still have the goodness left in them, unlike boiling veg until its soft. I'm still scared to eat certain things, even though I've never had a blockage, but I've heard stories from others. Like you I avoid sweetcorn (and peas) but I also avoid mushrooms, popcorn, nuts, raw veg, grapes (I see you eat those!). I really miss Snickers and crunchy nut cornflakes! I do eat baked beans now which my stoma is fine with. I find when I eat pasta that bits of that come out in my bag!

Hi Hannah, what a great series of videos. My Mum who is now 75 has an ileostomy Stoma (she actually spent her birthday in hospital having surgery the following day). It has been really tough for her since she had lost a large amount of weight through PMP illness before her surgery. After 5 weeks in hospital she is now into her 2nd week at home and the anti sickness tablets aren't helping a great deal so we are trying different foods and also working on her walking and being a little more active. I know everyone is different but we will try a couple of the things you have mentioned here, she was treated at The Christie Hospital in Manchester who were amazing and still support us if required. Total respect for the country for donating and contributing to a foundation that helps above and beyond for people with Cancer, thanks again Hannah and i hope things are better for you :-)

A wise person once told me, "If you eat it in the morning, it's breakfast!" So yeah, I have had plenty of dinner leftovers for breakfast. Don't let anyone tell you that food has to be eaten at a certain time of day - just eat what you want to, when you want to!

I have IBS with symptoms that make my healthiest diet very similar to yours. I do not even want to think of the number of times people told me to eat something different like veggies. It is incredible how people value a professional's advice on health topics but everyone seems to have the equivalent of a doctor's degree when it comes to diet.

I'm not a picky eater and I'm lucky to not have any food intolerances (aside from dairy but I'm vegan now anyways) but yes!! Watching What I Eat In A Day's can be weird sometimes. I LOVE to snack and I love simple carbs/oils and it feels like a lot of the What I eat In a Day people are putting their "best foot forward" by showing their ideal/perfect "healthy food day" (which I believe needs unpacking anyways bc a lot of these videos are low cal and low carb/fat which isn't synonymous with health) and it just isn't realistic for a lot of their viewers. Not to mention a lot of the food featured is often $$$$$$. Through trial and error I've found some really good What I eat In A Day videos but they're definitely difficult to find

You're what I eat is so relatable other than I just can't get myself to eat enough. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last year and trying to work out what I can eat is the hardest thing I've had to deal with. This has given me a few ideas- I really need to start eating breakfast (cheese toastie sounds good) rather than just drinking food supplements

As someone with an EXTREMELY similar taste pallet I'd love to see videos of what you eat in a day. When I watch other What I Eat In A Day videos I start feeling discouraged and guilty because I don't eat like a "normal" person. Unfortunately I'm sensitive to textures but my main sensitivity is taste and it would be nice to see what other people eat, especially people who have a similar taste pallet to that of a 6 year old, lol. It would be nice to watch a video and not feel ashamed for eating differently then most people.

YES! I have colitis too, and it’s amazing seeing someone describe my diet for the first time! I’m also on a low insoluble-fibre diet (turns out there are two sorts of fibre, who knew). It’s mostly fine til I try to eat out somewhere stocked with “healthy” food 🙄 I also limit my dairy, caffeine and processed/red meat intake to be as kind as possible to my colon, because I reeeaally don’t want to flare again. Anyway, thank you SO MUCH for drawing attention to low fibre diets and continuing to de-stigmatise IBD. I feel so happy and validated! 💛

Hannah, don't you dare even think about growing up, ever, I have a colonostoy, and ever since I left the hospital recovery after only 30 days, they wanted me to stay for another 30 days, cuz I was loosing weight, pre surgury I was 145lbs, and I had dropped to 91 lbs on their diet. They made me sign special release papers to get out, and with in 15 dys of being at home, eating what I wanted, and when I wanted and in the amounts I wanted, I gained 20lbs, half the time they had with me, now I'm back to 142 lbs and holding, I eat when and what I want, I do try to go low on the fibre and high on protien, but mostly I eat what I crave. I still eat a lot of sunflower seeds, including the shells, and popcorn almost everynight to fill my stomack before bed to make sleep better. We will crave what our body needs, and what we want is important to get the calories and nuturion we need. Great show, I will try someof your ideas, but I did eat corn on the cob tonight, I also eat coconut regularly. My favorite meal is porter house cut steak, lobster, and shrimp, w baked potatoes, I also need a lot of water, I eat ice crushed to make it eaisier to comsume enough. The smell you get from the cheap fish is because it is peices and parts of lots of differant fish, don't eat that shit.... Remember when our teachers said don't sollow your chewing gum, it will stay in your system for years, lie, I sollow gum everytime and within hours, there it is in my bag....... keep up the great job love your videos... Hi Hannah, I had a ileostomy and had a stoma for 3 months. During that time, I too had problems with eating spinach, peas, beetroot, salad leaves, nuts, olives and raisins. I also could not consume any type of juice. This used to set my stoma into a frenzy, whatever the juice!!My diet was high in carbs, with lots of water and added salts. I have since had a reversal opp, and that took once again a good long while to establish what digests well or not. I might add that spinach, salad leaves, beetroot and olives still have the same effect, even after a reversal. I totally agree with you regarding the consumption of fish. Whether it’s shellfish or cod etc, the output will smell !! Desiccated coconut is def a NO NO during stoma bag and even after stoma bag. I made the mistake of eating desiccated coconut after my reversal and I had two days of horrific bloat and pain. I truly thought I had another obstruction. So it was chamomile and peppermint tea to sooth the bloat.
Just wanted to say that I love watching your videos. It reminds me of my days with a stoma. Just wanted to say that digestion after the reversal opp is still tricky on occasions, and you are still learning about what your new connection can deal with. It’s a process of elimination and sometimes what you may have thought eating digests well on one day, may sometimes not on another day. I am always learning !

I have severe IBS and this is the diet that my GI has had me on since the beginning and it's the only thing that has worked. So many people give me a problem about my diet, especially during potlucks or parties. I've just started bringing food for myself when I go places.
