An important thing to remember 1) not all rule books state specifics and 2) other rule books do. @@AyoSteven.Official that's a VERY easy question to answer. Obviously, yes. Speaking, regardless of whether you're saying sorry or hello or making a knock knock joke, is not allowed in Singles points and is against the rules. It's been like that as long as I can remember. I played in M25 tournaments back in the day, many moons ago, which are ITF tournaments and speaking wasn't allowed. When I was a junior player in the US, ofc speaking is not allowed, USTA is strict against speaking during a point. It's always been a rule as long as I've been playing tennis. Grunting is allowed in all tennis matches and is not against the rules. You can't make a rule against grunting. If you tried, you'd be destroying the game by very severely limited the abilities of the players. I know exactly what you're referring to though, of course. The famous Sharapova scream (and many others, but hers is most famous). She actually received warnings and possibly point penalities (I can't remember clearly and haven't looked it up) for grunting unnecessarily loud. So it's not like it's okay to grunt excessively loud, it's moreso just a grey area that's hard to penalize. The opposing player can call hindrance and maybe that would nudge the chair umpire to regulate more strictly 🤷🏻♂️ Either way, some players that have been overly distracting with their unnecessarily violent grunts have been called out for it during their matches, but grunting loudly is not against the rules and never will be.

In this case, Medvedev shouted ‘sorry’ and the umpire called hindrance as Medvedev was about to smash and win the point. You cannot be a hindrance to your own self.
No it's not correct. The rule doesn't say "if player B is about to hit the ball". This is for doubles only. For singles, you're not allowed to talk at any point, ball going towards you or towards the opponent is irrelevant.

@@KoiKoy56 he didn’t break a rule tho, you can speak as long as it doesn’t interfere with your opponents ability to hit the ball. Please tell me how “sorry” interferes with Bublik
@@chriscontini1879 you can't. Some rulebooks don't specify speaking, others do. The one you're citing broadly states that players can't interfere with the other players ability to hit the ball. Other rule books state specifically that talking in singles is not allowed, and talking during doubles is allowed but strictly limited.
An important thing to remember 1) not all rule books state specifics and 2) other rule books do.
In this case, the broadly defined rule of hindrance refers to a more specifically defines rule of hindrance. This will always be the case in professional tennis, and the same rules apply to competitive, non-professional players.
@@KoiKoy56 Okay so it's okay to grunt like a mf Street Fighter character, but it's not okay to say "Sorry" as that's a hindrance???? Bruh looks like you're trying to spin something because "HRRAAA HHHHGGG HAAAAAA" is more hindrance than "Sorry."
The opposing player can call hindrance and maybe that would nudge the chair umpire to regulate more strictly 🤷🏻♂️
Either way, some players that have been overly distracting with their unnecessarily violent grunts have been called out for it during their matches, but grunting loudly is not against the rules and never will be.

No it's not correct. The rule doesn't say "if player B is about to hit the ball". This is for doubles only. For singles, you're not allowed to talk at any point, ball going towards you or towards the opponent is irrelevant.
Ok ok ok so lemme get this straight…. In a tennis match you can scream “IUGGHHHHHAAHHH” after literally every single hit of the ball. BUT if you quietly say sorry after hitting your opponent with a single shot you lose the point? Hysterical.
